I have to admit, there's not many places that I would give a "5-Star" rating for, but good ol' Mickey's is a place I cannot deny! This establishment has been here for as long as I can remember, the food is always hot & fresh, the place is always clean and the staff is always fast & friendly. Theres always a line during lunch time and the place packs up...but I guess that alone speaks for the quality you get from here. The hot-dogs are excellent, burgers are a good size as well as juicy and fries from here are far better than what you'll find at McDonalds or any other fast food spot. The "vintage" popular order from here would be the '2 Dog Special with fries'. It's quick, delicious and reasonably priced. Add a pizza puff and a large RC to that order (my personal fav additions) and you'll be good to go! Dine-in for free refills and stop thru during baseball season for a chance to win Cubs tickets. Here is another place that I have driven by a thousand and one times without ever stopping in. Well, I finally stopped in. They have a hot dog special that others have written about. Two dogs with fries for $4.69. Add a large drink and it comes out to $7.08 with the tax. Not a bad deal. As for the hot dogs, well.....I thought they were average and nothing special. Same goes for the fries. I know many other reviewers raved about them but I just can't concur. Average for me. Not terrible, just average. My son just brought me a Mickey's famous beef sandwich. The meat was tough and loaded with grizzle. Oh, it had flavor alright, but who wants to suck a beef sandwich? What a disappointment, half the meat had to thrown out. This tells me that the owner/manager is trying to save money by buying cheap cuts of beef. I was in town from Columbus, OH for a bowling tournament. I decided to look up fast food because it was getting late and I just wanted to get something quick. Now I'm the type of person who doesn't want to eat anything when I'm traveling that I can get at home. I have never been to Chicago and according to google and yelp, Mickeys was a great little pace to go. I went in and asked one of the employees what was best and said I was from out of town. He directed me toward the two hot dog special (both with fried) for $5.49. I wanted to keep it traditional and eel them Chicago style. They are so delicious! All the toppings work perfectly and I am so glad I stopped at this little dive. The fries are good as week and I got a strawberry milkshake which was BOMB. Moderately priced mediocre hot dog joint. I got a regular Chicago dog and cheese fries. The bun was a little dry, and I didn't really like that. Cheese fries were good. They did prepare my food with their bare hands. I'm not sure if that is normal for hot dog joints. They prepared the food right in front of me, and I wouldn't be surprised if they do that normally behind closed doors. So that threw me off a bit. Mickey's was a pleasant surprise for me. I randomly stopped by there as I was trying to grab a quick meal after work, and I was sold. Mickey's is definitely a local neighborhood gem, and I'm glad I was able to find it myself. So what is great about Mickey's? Well what stood up to me first is they really do a great job capturing the essence of what a Chicago hot dog spot is supposed to be. The restaurant was small and quaint, and it had the no frills Midwestern vibe that I love. The service and staff was also old school in regards to being polite and quick with their service (I was out within 5 minutes of ordering... it was amaizing). Mickey's definitely did well with there atmosphere and service. As for the food, I ordered the 2 hot dog special, and it was the typical Chicago dog. They didn't try to recreate the wheel or do any kind of crazy fusion. They served you a Chicago dog with all the standard toppings of the Chicago dog and no ketchup. The actual hot dogs were tasty and had a nice firm bite. The condiments were fresh and complimented the hot dog well. The only thing I that I didn't care for was the fries. The fries were the small and thin, and they really just did seem to pair up with the Chicago style hot dog. All in all though, the food was great. Finally, the value of Mickey's is absolutely amazing. The 2 hot dog special came with fries, and it was only $4.99. You can't really beat that price for the quantity and quality Mickey's provides. I've been coming to Mickey's since the time they opened 41 years ago when my parents used to take me. Now I take my own children here. It's always been a great go to for a quick delicious hot dog special. I have never! I repeat never! Been disappointed in their food or service. Walked and drove by this place for 22 years and always told myself I need to try this place. I finally followed through yesterday and am kicking myself for not going in way back then. Had their "hot dog special". Great Chicago style dog with fries. Dogs are great and fries were hot and lightly salted. Checked out the menu and good selection for varied tastes. Price points of menu items were VERY reasonable. Coming back to eat through the menu with the wife. Upgrades to outdoor seating would be nice but it is available when weather is nice. I came for lunch yesterday and while I stood in line, two kids came up to the counter. This place has a lot of loyal fans and there's always a nice crowd of customers whenever we visit. The Facts: -Vienna Beef Kosher Dogs (check) -Steamed Poppyseed Bun (check) -Mustard, Relish, Onion, Tomato, Dill Pickle, Celery Salt, Sport Peppers (check) THE BEST PART: They give you all the proper toppings and condiments in slightly smaller portions. for example, they slice the dill pickle and tomatoes thinner than most places. Most of the time, my knock on a Chicago Dog is that there are SO much toppings, and the dog itself gets lost. A Mickey's Dog has all the Chicago Fixins and doesn't make the dog play second fiddle. The people who work here are really nice and they run a tight ship (it gets kinda crowded at lunch). The fries are ALWAYS cooked to perfection and PERFECTLY salted (I am dead serious about this people, I used to work nearby, I have eaten here over 20 times and the fries are ALWAYS PERFECT!) Mickey's is the latest stop on my tour of hot dog joints in the western suburbs and it was definitely a stop worth making. They have the "deluxe" Chicago-style hot dog perfected. What do I mean by deluxe? In addition to the basic ingredients of bun, natural casing dog, mustard, relish, onions and sport peppers upgrade to a poppyseed bun and add tomatoes and a pickle slice. Their fries elevate them from a very good 3.5 star wiener to a solid 4 stars. The dining room and kitchen area are clean (unlike G&J's) and the staff routinely wash their hands, as previously mentioned. Great Vienna Beef dogs with poppyseed buns and neon green relish. Two hot dogs, lots of fries, and a drink for $4.19 - not bad. My husband felt his combo was average. It had tomato sauce but no juice, which isn't what I'm accustomed to in a combo. I know I'll be back here for a hot dog, and I'd like to try a Polish. This place looks like about a dozen other neighborhood hot dog places I can think of, although probably half of those have closed as time marches on. You know, small but clean, ancient wood paneling on the walls, and a big chamber of commerce-type map of all the businesses in town. They have a few tables outside with umbrellas. Sport peppers seem to be larger than what other places serve! - Beef - great! - Fries - "okay to good". Not spectacular. I've had better fries from other hotdog and burger stands, but I have also had worse. (* fries come with the hotdog for a price of about 2.60, which is a deal considering most other places - like Portillo's - the hotdog alone is 2.60 or more. A "bag of fries" at Scooby's is over $3.50!)) Service inside - decent and friendly. I got my food 'to go'. Inside seemed to be kind of a "hang-out" - bunch of teens and preteens sitting around in what appeared to be a combo of loitering and eating. Being that this was a sunny, hot summer day though and with kids out of school and pools and park districts nearby, I can let this stuff slide. I did the same stuff at their ages. Solid place for hot dogs and other cheap eats. This place has been around for a while and parking is pretty easy. There are a few tables inside which is busy during lunch, but otherwise, pretty easy to find a seat. Instead of having just 1 order taker, they have several and they're pretty quick with handling your order. All of the staff were pretty friendly and recognized the regulars. The quality of the food is pretty good and prices are reasonable. The drink prices were a little high and the fries were oversalted for my taste. I have been trying to find a decent hot dog joint in my area and though this place is still a bit of a drive it is closer then others. The hotdogs are...good. I have no complaints. Tasty and for a good price. For roughly $4 you can get two hotdogs with fries for each, as a special. The fries are good too and remind me of Burger King. They were perhaps a bit too dried out though. The staff was friendly and they got me my order quickly.
