A place you can trust. Recently I took my Honda to the dealer for oil change and was told my compliance bushings are broken - a job that would cost around $600. Since I do not trust the dealer I took the car to Midas as I had great experience with them in the past and Chris checked my car and confirmed my suspicion that there was nothing wrong with my compliance bushings and saved me the $600. I've learned my lesson never go back to the Honda of El Cerrito and only bring my car to Paul and Chris as they do an excellent job without reaping you off and as a women you need a place you can trust. read more

I went in for some front end work on my '95 Toyota Tacoma. The work was done in a timely manner. A month later I experienced difficulties with parts that had been assessed but not replaced. I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this particular Midas location. Paul (the owner) and his team of mechanics are absolutely WONDERFUL. I first came to Midas about 1-1/2 years ago, when I was preparing to make a trip to SoCal, but knew my car needed brakes and tires before I hit the Grapevine. After hearing my total for everything I initially wanted to have done, my heart skipped a beat and I'm pretty sure Paul said all the color drained out of my face lol. Without me even telling him my budget, Paul worked with me to determine the most essential things that needed to happen (my brakes were still a must) for me to safely get to SoCal...which managed to get me under the budget I had. I had to take my car back in yesterday due to a very obvious radiator problem. Paul greeted me warmly and with that wonderful personality he is known for (even at 7:30 a.m.), and I left my car there to be fixed for the day while I went to work. Paul provided me with regular updates on what the problem was, and let me know promptly when it was ready. I rarely trust any mechanic, let alone a national chain shop, but this particular Midas isn't like the others, much of the credit going towards Paul. Great place! I've been going there for years, and each time it's actually an enjoyable experience. If it weren't for the cost, I would almost wish I had more car problems, because Paul is such a nice guy, a real people person. They're absolutely honest about what's needed, never tried to push anything on me, and, while not a discount place, completely fair in their prices. They always tell me beforehand what something will cost, and then they stick to it. No bad surprises when I pick up my car! And they're quick, too, and finish when they say they will. I had been going here for 3 years, but the last time I went there will definitely stay the last. Around 3-4 months ago, I left my car overnight to get an oil and transmission fluid change. They called me back the next day, saying I don't need a transmission fluid change now, trying to talk me out of it, saying Honda doesn't even recommend changing it until 120k miles (which, no, they recommend at 60k, and that's normal driving conditions, whereas my car is driven hard under extreme conditions, urging the tranny fluid change at a bit less than 60k miles, which is what the car was at), which what Honda recommends isn't the important thing anyway - he should have been telling me how the transmission fluid looked in age after they had checked it with the dipstick - that is what matters, and I was never given any info on that simple aspect. They say okay, and then when I go to pick up my car, I asked a passing question that got a very weird answer. I asked "how'd that transmission fluid look" and he replied "oh, you know, they all look the same". ..huh? No, it definitely doesn't look all the same. It's variations of clear fresh color all the way to extremely old/burnt. I was dumb and passed off this answer as nothing to worry about, and took their word on the work done, because I'd been going here for 3 years with no issue. A few weeks ago, I had to take my car in for a product recall to be replaced at the dealership. When they were done, they said all was well with the car, except a service light was out (not related), the brake fluid (not related) and transmission fluid needed changing (3-4 months after I had just had it changed???), and also that I should be very careful because the engine was overfilled by a quart and a half of oil (also done at Midas when I asked them to do the oil/tranny fluid changes). And it's not like the dealership service rep who was going over my car with me was trying to upsell me more services I don't really need, because he didn't even offer to have them have these things fixed or to make an appointment for me to have it done later. He was just telling me what the service worker's required inspection found, and honestly, he was really trying to hurry me on my way at the end of the day. I get that some oil change places will do fast, shoddy work and will sometimes overfill the engine. It's so easy to avoid, and is careless, but whatever, I get that it happens a lot (even at dealerships). I'm extremely angry at myself for not checking the oil level in all this time, so I've been driving with my engine overfilled by a sizable amount of oil for months now, but it's not like I'd never come back to this Midas for that mistake alone. But the fact when I was told that the transmission fluid was dirty and could use replacing a few months after it was supposedly replaced brand new (and I've since dipsticked it myself, and it's not a few months fresh looking), that's what will never get me in this store again. Most likely scenario, they got the car in in the morning, didn't have the readily available resources or time to deal with the transmission fluid change, so changed the oil, then called me and tried to talk me out of the tranny fluid change, and then when I still wanted them to do it, they just said "okay", but never even brought the car back in to the garage, but charged me for the work anyway. I love Paul!!! This is the first shop I ever took my car to and i have never had to go any where else. As a college student on a budget Paul works with me on pricing and always gives it to me straight. I needed to get a headlight replaced. I already had the headlight. They told me the could not install customer parts....ok whatever. So I ask for a quote, the price for light was more than 2x the price I had paid plus $70 to install the bulb. Wow! No thank you! read more

I went in for an oil change but these guys blew some fuse in the process and as a result my power windows and doors quit working. They spent an hour trying to fix it to no avail. I went to a Volkswagen expert and they changed the fuse in 5 minutes. I'm not going back here. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!! I'm not being that guy. My truck had the engine light on. I brought it to Midas here in El Cerrito to get fixed with an oil change. About an hour after my truck had been "fixed," Paul said there were still repairs that needed to be done. I was sort of confused because I brought my truck here to get fixed. My engine light came back on within an hour of them "fixing," it. Paul told me my truck was good to drive. Today it has been 2 weeks since I brought my car here, and my truck will not start and has been parked in front of my house for 3 days. The age old yelp problem is too many people hand out 5 stars to people that don't deserve it (maybe they should get 3 or 4... since they're 'ok' or 'good'). So when you find an actual 5 start place... it doesn't stick out like it should. Well; these guys are 5 stars. They are not just another tire and brake pad replacing shop. They have real mechanics who can fix your engine or complex brake system problem. I had brake system problems for years... that several other shops took whacks at and these guys fixed them. They also fixed a couple engine problems I didn't notice I had but now that I have the car back it runs much better. read more

I have been going to this Midas for the past 8-9 years and the service has always been excellent. Paul is funny and honest, hard to find in a mechanic, he gives me great prices and I always compare prices before I go to Paul and his is always cheaper. He always has hot coffee and heat, and tv . I brought my Jeep Liberty here for a diagnostic assessment. The problem * the wrong rear differential fluid had been put in at a previous service elsewhere * was identified immediately. These folks got me in right away and remedied the problem. They were courteous and friendly, not only to me, but to every client who came in the door while I waited. I never thought I'd pick up my jeep from an auto shop and feel glad I brought it in. Paul and Chris are not only really knowledgeable mechanics but they really understand customer service. The turn around time on when I brought in my 2005 Jeep was absurdly short. Dropped off my Jeep with a bad starter at 1PM and I asked for a new starter, an alignment, plus rotate and balance. I couldn't believe when Chris told me it would be ready by the end of the day and it was! They gave me the promotion prices that weren't going in effect until the following week and really made the bill something I could live happily with. I do a lot of work on my Jeep myself but for anything I can't do I will go to the Midas in El Cerrito. read more

Go somewhere else. These people are crooks. I went in for an oil change and they did the standard checkup on my car. Afterward, they gave me a list of things (6-7 things) that were wrong with my car. I took it to another mechanic and had them check all of the things that the Midas guys said was wrong. Only one thing on the list was actually wrong with it. Do not go to these guys. Let me start off by mentioning that I was referred to this place to start off with. I made this information known when I first spoke with Paul (the owner) over the phone. He then passed the phone to his assistant manager to gather all my details. to make a long story short Paul and his crew are very slick. They seem very nice and friendly but they are wolves in sheep clothing. They charged me a diagnostic fee that was suppose to find the issue with my car but I ended up comming back for 3 days straight. Each time they kept trying to pacify me by saying, "we need to check one more thing". In the end the problem I took it in for was a simple $12.00 part I could had changed with a phillip screwdriver. I wouldnt be so disappointed in their service if they would have found the problem the first time and I had to pay the $150.00 diagnotstic fee simply because they had the knowledge to find it. The issue here is that they kept telling me it's something different each day, thus charging me for work I didn't need. In the end I was out of $830.00 for a part that cost $12.00. By the way... they tried to make me feel good by saying they was not going to charge me the 45.00 in labor for the 15 minutes it took them to install it. Need i say that this place is a total ripoff and I'm not ever going back. Believe me I will tell everyone I know to beware of these crooks. p.s.
