The tips provided by Anna were very helpful. I was able to recreate what she did at the salon so that's a plus. However, I do not rate this establishment as 5 stars because there is room for improvement. Firstly, it was very difficult to make an appointment. One because I don't believe their hours are online; two because they don't answer the phone. I understand that they don't have a huge staff and would like to attend to their current client/duty but I think it's also important to be attentive to new clients... Furthermore, when I did get an appointment and went I was stuck outside the building (the doors were closed) frantically calling and messaging the owner because I was in a bit of a rush and I didn't want to be late to a meeting I had right after the appointment! With the alternative being that there cancellation rate is like 90-100%. She finally responded, and from there on she was very kind and helpful. SO, overall I think that this place is worth checking out, I personally just get panicky when there's ambiguity. read more

Love this salon! I never thought I would have the type of relationship with a salon where I would feel comfortable texting my hairdresser about appointments and hair tips but this place has the magic sauce ... literally. Not only do they have great products for curly hair but they will give in depth tutorials about how to use those products in a realistic and sustainable way. I can't recommend Midtown Curls enough! I lived in Reno for a year, a few blocks away from Midtown Curls, and found the salon through Yelp reviews. I'm always nervous about cuts with a new stylist, but Anna and all the curly hair love eased my fears right away. Over the year I got 2 haircuts and balayage from Anna, and loved them all. My only regret was that I couldn't bring her with me when I moved back to the Bay Area last fall. Midtown Curls was the first place I thought of when I was stressing about my hair for my Tahoe area wedding. The wedding was a few weeks ago, and I was able to enlist Tariann to style my hair, plus my 3 bridesmaids AND my 98 year old great aunt. I don't know what more to say besides that Tariann was AMAZING. Our hair looked great, looked and felt like our own (other wedding hair stylists I talked to wanted to straighten and then re-curl my hair... why??), and stayed up all day/night. Plus, Tariann was an awesome addition to our little getting ready party that morning :) Easily one of the best decisions I made in the wedding planning process. I had a similar experience as one of the other reviewers regarding the absurdly extra charge for what the stylist considers an "educational course" on how to use their products and style my hair. Please. It was offensive that they think this information is so valuable that they need to charge extra for. I too was confused by the pricing and did not know I was agreeing to pay an exorbitant fee for the "course," which is basic information that stylists always tell you when you get a haircut from them. Unfortunately, my cut was not good and looked ridiculous on me. I am patient with new stylists, but the bad cut on top of the extra fee was too much. First of all the salon is so cute and comfortable. I loved the look on the inside and out. Second of all, Anna one of the curly hair specialists made me feel so welcomed. She treated me and my hair so well! I walked out of the salon so happy, pleased and loving my hair again. She showed me how to work with my hair, and she even took the time to cut my hair dry! If anyone knows about cutting hair, especially curly hair you cannot cut it wet or else it will shrink up and be shorter than it should be. Anna was amazing. Several years ago I swore to never have my hair cut again after making the mistake of going to a hair dresser who knew nothing about curly hair. Of course my hair became too long and heavy for me and I knew it was time to find a pro. I found my pro at Pearle Studios. She listened to what I wanted and then told me what would and wouldn't work with my face. It took FOREVER, but it was well worth it. She sculpted my rat's nest hair into an adorable bob. My hair turned out way better than I even imagined. With my appointment I got offered free drinks, a massage, a scent therapy and nice chatter. Most importantly, she gave me a complete walk through of how to style my hair on a day-to-day basis (I've been following it, and let me tell you, she has the key to healthy curly hair! This was by far the best salon I have been to. Not only does it look nice and smell great, but Anna is so kind and can cut and dye hair amazingly. Since my hair is curly I am always cautious of people cutting it, but she knew what she was doing. I don't write a lot of reviews but felt I should after my appt with Loni. It's obvious she has a passion for what she does and she is extremely talented. I have been to over a handful of salons since moving here and have not been able to find someone like her or a salon I would go back to. I have had long hair all my life and on a whim cut it just below my chin. I have been growing it out and have had such a hard time styling it. My hair was heavy and weighed down and was not holding a curl (natural or from a curling iron). After my cut with Loni my hair is back to feeling like mine. I don't have curly hair but I do have blonde!! Loni was referred to me by a girl I seen with beautiful blonde highlights when I first moved to the area. She is very busy and have to book in advance but well worth it she knows exactly what she's doing and is great at it. My biggest fear is being ruined by someone who don't know what their doing with blonde it's so easy to go brassy orange but thankfully I found Loni. She does my blonde hair highlights and my sil brown hair with highlights very natural and beautiful. I wish she could blow dry and curl my hair every time I wash.
