Local Move in Chicago area. Today I used Midway Moving to move me out of my one bedroom Apartment. I used them last year and because I had an Ok experience I decided to use them again this year. Last year, they moved me from my storage space into a 3rd floor 1 bedroom apartment. I did have a male friend present with me during my last year move. Initially when they came last year we got off to a rough start but everything worked out. I paid about $540-$560 last year for the entire move. It took them three hours last year (they also charged me an extra $50.00 for the steps). I had way more things and I only had two men last year. So today they were suppose to arrive between 9am-10am. They called me during that hour and said the drivers had gotten into a car accident and they would find me a new moving crew. They also advised that they would now be arriving between 11am-12:30pm. Ok, so the second call that I received was from another man saying that they found a new moving crew for me and they would be sending me a new crew that included a 3rd man. The midway moving representative said they would "discount me" for the 3rd man. It would be faster and also it was suppose to rain. He advised the 3rd mover was needed. I explained to him that in my initial estimate I requested a 2 man crew and that If they were sending a 3rd man this should be complimentary to me. I explained to him that it wasn't my fault that my initial crew was in an accident and that it was unfair and unprofessional that I was being charged for the 3rd man. The midway representative was slightly rude and was fast talking me. After Our call ended I called back to the office to speak to another person. I spoke to ERIK who was a complete ass hole. Very rude. He said that I would probably be paying a little over what I was initially quoted and they would be done faster. He also said that they would discount the third man. Again, I explained that I NEVER requested a 3rd man. I questioned again why am i being charged for a situation that I had nothing to do with. I explained to him that this was highly unprofessional. The third man should have been complimentary since they decided to assign this moving crew to me. I told him that I would never use Midway Moving again. So the crew arrived. They were nice. However, one suggested that I purchase two additional packing material items to protect two of my fragile items. I asked him how much would this cost me? He advised $31 x 2. He than added up an "estimate" of my charges and said it would come to a little over $600 for my entire service. I agreed to it. I was initially quoted 573. So for the move I had a 3rd man which I had to pay for (I didn't ask for). For me to have had three guys and way less items then last year it took longer for them to move me. Two of the young men were a little slower and I could hear one of the movers constantly giving them directives. He continued to ask them to do this and that. At the end of the move I was told my total was 906.00. I freaked out. How did we go from a little over $600 to $906?? The mover said he had made a mistake with quoting me and forgot to add in a few things. I called into the office to discuss the charges. I was extremely upset. More upset about being charged for a 3rd man that I didn't request. I only received a $9 discount on the 3rd mover. When I got on the phone with the company they re-added up my charges and said that they made a mistake and my total was actually $768 oppose to $906. How does one make a huge mistake like this? Imagine how many people would pay this amount and not question it. I will never use Midway Movers again!!! I felt like I was highly taken advantage of due to that fact that I was a women and alone during this process. Regardless of the experience I had today I still tipped the movers $140.00 as I felt that they deserved something despite of my horrible experience. I wish I had read these reviews before my move... I was supposed to move on June 30th at 3 pm. They were supposed to call me in the morning to confirm. I never received a call and they were confused when I called to confirm. They called me at 4pm, said their truck was "rear-ended" on the way to my apt. I wasn't born yesterday, I know when I'm being lied to. They wanted to change my move to the next day! I said no, that's not possible. They said OK, we'll be there around 6pm. They call at 630pm, we'll be there at 9pm. We started to move ourselves and then they call at 930pm, and "maybe we'll be there at 10pm, but can you do tomorrow morning?" My response, "ARE YOU F'ING KIDDING ME?!?!?" Needless to say my roommate and I spent the next 4 hours stuffing furniture into his SUV and holding onto our mattresses strapped on the roof of the car. Apparently I'm not the first to think this company SUUCCCKKKSSSSS. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT USE THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. We were told AT the time the movers were supposed to get there (after WE called) that our truck "got in an accident" and they would be sending another one shortly. After not hearing back for a while, I had to call 10 times for TWO HOURS to get any answers to any questions. When the movers FINALLY got there two and a half hours late, no one had told them we were on a 3 story walk up. We also had to beg to get an extra mover since we were on a time constraint. The move ended up being twice as much as the estimate due to stupid charges such as wrapping and tape, which we were never informed of and were told was NECESSARY in order for our stuff to stay safe. Nay's- - They showed up an hour early. - My bill was more than expected, but not much more. - The foreman mentioned they usually get tipped $100 per mover - I had to disappoint the foreman Yay's- - They were friendly, professional and very motivated to get the job completed - I didn't need to coach them much - They wrapped everything thouroughly - Nothing broke - Finished within my estimted time I should mention that this was my first experience using a moving company. Second move in a row where these guys have been great. My first move was local in Chicago and everything went so well that as soon as I learned they did long distance as well, they were my choice for my cross country move. Every person I've interacted with has been on time (if not early), professional and friendly and taken great care to protect my stuff. Even after some logistical changes on my end that seemingly would delay my delivery date, they adjusted on their end to hit the exact delivery day I was hoping for. These bozos showed up all most 3 hours late I was promised 3 laborers I received 2 The company quoted me 475. As soon As these morons showed up they began pressing me for a tip again this is after showing up almost 3 hours late and before doing any work. I'm moving literally 5 blocks east from where I live they get everything load on the truck and say they'll be arriving shortly to the destination, it took me 5 minutes to get there yet for some reason. It took them almost 40 minutes. They where extremely rude and pejorative and demanded payment before they even completed the job the bill came out to nearly double the estimate. After all this the clowns were surprised to not receive a tip and I was bombarded with profanity and racially charged insults after I called and complained I saw one of the two laborers go into my bathroom to take a call presumably from his supervisor next thing I know they leave with out saying a word they also refused to where a face covering. read more

I agree with the other less than favorable ratings on Midway Movers. They quoted a price of $375.00 to move us and it ended up being $525.00. And like the other reviews they asked for a tip! It took them over 6 hours to move us less than a mile, literally 0.5 miles from one home to another. The company sent 3 raggedy looking guys-1 was the driver, all 3 look like they had seen better days! I could have strapped a donkey with my items and moved faster than they did! One guy looked like a drinker! We only used them when they showed up because it was a Saturday move and in the middle of winter! If I could have waited to relocate I would have for this crap that we got! Talk about moving slow, we even helped out by moving items in our own car, so its not like they moved a ton of stuff! They also damaged some items. Two of them got into an argument while moving us and even requested bottled water from us! Smh! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Every time I see this orange truck on the road, I have flashbacks! As for the tip, I told the driver, next time move faster! I will NEVER hire Midway Moving & Storage Inc. they have no regard for others property...my neighbor just had a service from them where they came to the back of the house and knocked down my power lines. Accidents happen but they made no effort to inform me or the property manager. Taking matters into my own hands I called my property manager, when he confronted them they said that they'll "fix it" before they left. Unconvinced that they would "fix it" I informed ComEd of the dangerous situation of loose and hanging wires where there is frequent traffic.In the end their version of fixing it included wrapping packing tape to all the wires and hoisting them upon each other. They then proceeded to litter in my backyard. Throwing coffee cups, plastic wrap and other debris from their truck onto my grass. read more

I used Midway Movers last year for my move and it was horrible. Like others have said, I should have read the reviews first but I waited until last minute to do my move and went off of a reference from someone else in my building. I should have sent them away immediately when the main mover said he'd cut me a deal as long as I didn't tell the company. He was dishonest from the start. The movers all seemed friendly but scammed me by telling me that they were going to give me a "good deal" as long as I tipped them well. The main mover told me that a typical tip was $75-$100 per mover. I gave $75 each and after tipping them I received the bill which was $200 more than the original quote. They charged me extra for "wardrobe boxes" that I didn't ask for as well as some kind of shrink wrap. They punched a hole in the back of my wardrobe when they loaded it on the truck but otherwise my things were okay. The move, however, cost me almost $900 when all was said and done. The original estimate was $500. In addition, one of the movers used my restroom and left a piece of used toilet tissue with feces on it on my bathroom counter. It was disgusting. I would never use Midway Movers again. I learned my lesson: do your research ahead of time. read more

I wish you could give less than 1 star. When my movers showed up they immediately began fighting and one mover left in the middle of the move. They damaged several of my big items during the move then demanded a "minimum tip" of $50 per man. They stood over me while I was signing the papers and kept saying "so you're going to pay the minimum right?" and "why do you have to read the contract, just sign it." It took dozens of emails but Midway finally apologized an offered $56 for my furniture and $23 for my troubles. Companies like this should not be able to operate in Illinois. I moved with Two Men and a Truck in the past and they were great... use them. After writing a review: Midway has refused to honor the insurance clause of our contract. We had the best experience, in difficult circumstances. My 75-year old mother, who has a variety of problems, decided to move in two days, which I didn't find out until the day before her scheduled move. The movers were incredibly patient with all of us, in a situation where she was barely packed, and had a lot of things to fit into a small space. They were careful with all of her things, and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend Midway Movers. read more

Midway came highly recommended to us by a friend but I would never use them again. First, the truck showed up late. When they finally did arrive the crew chief took me aside and told me that for a job like ours, they would be expecting a tip of $100 per man. Keep in mind that we were moving from a 1 bedroom apartment to another 1 bedroom and they hadn't even lifted a box yet! During the entire day they kept hinting at how the company didn't treat the workers well and that they were all underpaid and overworked. When they were finally finished, they were an hour+ over their estimate. When I did tip them at the end of the day (20%) they acted as if I'd spit in their drink. These guys tack on a charge for a few extra dollars any chance they get, resulting in a bill about 15-20% more than what you're originally told. Honestly, though... this happens a lot with moving companies. As far as the job they did, only two things (a piece of furniture with a cracked leg and a framed photograph broken) from a big apartment were damaged. The movers themselves were courteous and professional. I've had better, and I've had worse. read more

Midway moved my company and they did a terrific job. I have recommended them to a variety of friends for residential moves and I have never heard a complaint. In fact, some of my friends thanked me for the recommendation. They were friendly, on time, and kept the place clean and professional. We had no damage claims or any issues with quality. Regarding Bill No.1151791 - Steve and crew were great. They packed everything efficiently and quickly. No damage to any items or walls in my small condo. They were able to disassemble our bulky couch and maneuver it through several small doors without a problem. The price was reasonable for the work involved. There was good communication and customer service all around, from the people I spoke to on the phone to the movers themselves. Also, my move was initially scheduled at 9:00am, and they ended up calling and coming earlier at 8:00am. It was nice to get everything done and out of the way sooner. read more

Recently used Midway in an 'in-town' move, Lincoln Park to Lakeview. These guys were very fast, very professional, very hard working. Make sure you pre-pack as much as possible, tape and wrap anything thats exposed. They will charge extra for packing wrap/tape/etc... Definitely recommend them, top notch! I was hesitant to use this company because of these reviews, but I continued to do so because I had a referral. I tried to be very positive for the initial move out and as you can see from my review below, it went very well. I kept all of my belongings in storage at their facility for the next month until I found a new apartment. Moving in was did not go nearly as well. I knew something was up right away when one the workers asked me to pay for the move right when I greeted him at my front door. I asked him to wait till the end as they did on my other move and he said they had changed policies and I needed to pay right away. I did as he said, but I did not sign off on any paperwork to assess that there were any damages. I'm glad I waited. A small black bookshelf I had was completely ruined by Midway. The backing of the unit came off and they went ahead and stapled it back onto the book shelf on the WRONG side. Instead of looking at the bookshelf and seeing a complete black piece, you see brown cardboard and broken staples. I am appalled that they would take it upon themselves to put together a piece of furniture, especially the wrong way. I highly recommend using a different moving company for your move in the Chicago area. Midway moving is not worth the stress or damages for the price. read more

I used this company for a cross country move in July 2013. I did not have any problems with the pick up, although they were about 2 hours late but I'm not going to hold that against them since I was the last move of the day. The movers were curteous and quick. The issue I have the company is with the delivery - two items were not delivered... my home computer and an Ikea floor length mirror. Hind sight I should have put the computer in the car and taken it with me. The movers delivering my items were curteous and other than the missing items all my electronics (big screen TV, etc.), furniture ($4000 Eames chair, etc.) and other items arrived in great condition. The move itself was pricier than quoted but I also will not hold that agains them as price was based on weight. Other than wrapping the furniture I packed all of my own boxes. I filed a claim with Midway for the missing items in July 2013, filed a police report with Chicago police department in August 2013, followed up with my local Apple store to see if the computer could be tracked based on serial number. I have been actively seeking resolution of this issue by placing many phone calls and emails to Midway. I even talked to Wayne Stephens, Director of Operations and Judy Baghdon, Operations Manager shortly after the move to report the missing items. Both were extremely nice on the phone and reasssured me that they would help to resolve this issue quickly. It is now 6 months later and the claim is still oustanding with no claim number assigned and I cannot get anyone at Midway to respond to my phone calls or emails. I recently filed a complaint with the BBB. read more

As others have mentioned, Joseph and his moving crew were amazing and I give them 5 stars. Midway, however, not so much. Setting up the move for June 30th was easy and it was confirmed several times easily via email. I believe the quote was pretty high for a 1.5 bed ($500) to move less than a mile, but we just went with it. Important note: Both places I was moving into and out of have elevators, so I had to book the slots accordingly. The day of the move, the movers were supposed to arrive at 10 AM. 10:15 rolls around.... nothing... I give dispatch a call and they let me know they are attempting to reach the driver. Dispatch calls me back about 5 minutes later (10:20) and lets me know the truck + crew that were on the way got into an accident on the way to load me up and are currently with the police, so they are waiting to hear what/how long they think the delay is and will call me right back. 10:45: call back from dispatch that the truck and crew are not going anywhere anytime soon, so they are attempting to put together another crew and truck but will be probably about an hour until that time. My elevator window is 10-12 at my place, so I went to ask my apartment if I could push it later - they are willing to work with me as no one is moving out after me and say I can have it until whenever I need it. 11:45: no one is there still. I call dispatch and they say the guys should be pulling up any minute. 12 pm: the crew finally arrives (Joseph and team) and it was one of those 100 degree nasty days, so I felt bad they were just coming off another move, but they couldn't have been nicer. Joseph quickly assessed the situation and said he thought he could get the move done more quickly than estimated but if not, would be closer to $800 instead of $500. Why the move estimate was so off, I don't know...but again, we went with it. Joseph and crew were fast, efficient and nice. However, it took (as estimated) until 1:45ish to finish loading up, and we arrived to the new apartment at 2:16 - 16 minutes past our window for the elevator at the new place. Understandably, the new place does not lock their elevators past 2 pm on the weekend as there are people with groceries/babies, so the guys had to use the elevator normally/take the stairs. They did work as efficiently as possible but pushed our move into the 4 pm window. I believe had we had the elevator, it would have been less. So the estimate of $800 stood. We tipped all 3 guys well and paid with a credit card. I put several calls and emails into Judy Bagdon, the Manager of Client Services, after our move in the last month to explain what happened and ask for any kind of discount/refund of services (at the very least, an inconvenience discount for waiting 2 hours) to let them make it right so I could hopefully write a nicer review, but Judy never returned any of those calls or emails. I'd shop around for a lower quote and take your business elsewhere. read more

Never found any of my candles holders, Wine and wall plaques........after we treated them so nice and gave them beverages to stay hydrated and a extra tip. It's hard to trust people these days after this horrible year so far. We trusted this company thinking that since The Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls name behind it that we were in good hands..........We called to complain and the woman over the phone never called back. I don't even know where to begin with this one. Midway was recommended to me by a friend, simply because he had seen their trucks around. I called for a quote and was given a pretty good one so I decided to go with them. Unfortunately, I had to work so my girlfriend took the day off to allow the movers inside to handle all the heavy stuff. They showed up informed her they would need to wrap all of the items with their plastic for a fee because there was slight rain outside. They said if we didn't agree to this fee, they couldn't be liable for water damage. This fee was never mentioned in the quoted price of moving items. Moving on, the movers took forever to move our stuff. Maybe it was because one of them was overweight. He even mentioned several times how he was overweight and wasn't fit for the job. So you charge by the hour and send overweight guys to move our stuff? To sum up the story, I had to call two of my friends to go assist the movers. They were slow, unprofessional and I'm sure there's a lot better moving companies to choose from in Chicago. read more

My neighbors used this company to move and the midway moving truck backed into my car, broken tail light, cracked bumper - $800 of damage. I was told the company would take care of it and they gave me the run around, passing me to different people until they wouldn't return my calls. I wouldn't trust them to move a carpet. NOT PROFESSIONAL AT ALL....from the movers all the way through management. Absolutely the worst moving experience I've ever had. This company is a joke. The morning of the move I receive a phone call from them asking what time I would like to have a representative out that day to do our pre-move evaluation. I was dumbfounded. I stated, today is our move date and you guys were supposed to be here 30 minutes ago. After a brief silence I was told, let me get back to you. The movers finally arrived, a rag-tag bunch that lead me to believe they forgot my move and threw together a crew at a moment's notice. Initially things were going well, I supplied food and bottled water for them as it was about 95 degrees out that day. When we got to the destination (move from a Chicago condo to a house in the burbs) they got lost. Eventually they showed up and started unloading. There were a few items of furniture which had sustained some damage in the move and I pointed this out to the crew chief, he suggested I take photos and file a claim the following business day. After the move was done I signed the slip and tipped the guys. As another reviewer stated the said they get tipped more like $100 each....pretty poor on the professionalism standpoint. I supplied food and beverages all day for them so I felt $20 each was appropriate for 4 guys and some furniture damage. The movers left and during the next 24 hours we found more damaged items as we unboxed and moved furniture which we documented for the claim. I filed a claim and received a letter stating I would be contacted by mail within 45 days from a claims representative. 45 days came and went so I called the claims dept and they emailed a copy of the letter, which denied liability for the damaged items since I signed the bill of lading. This was really upsetting since the crew chief said to sign so they could be released and the claim could be filed the next business day....very shady business practice here Also, were we supposed to hold the crew hostage as we opened ever box and inspected every item for damage? They would have been there for two days! I called the director of operations and he seemed to agree sometimes damage isn't always immediately apparent and was told he would look into it and get back in touch with me. I never got a call back, soooo, after another few weeks I call back and leave a few messages for the director, no response. I finally got him on the phone and was apologized to for the delay and asked if I could be called back in a few hours after he looked up the file again...no call back. A few days later, a few messages left...still no response....I'm not giving up though...I will continue to call. read more

The worst moving company ever. First, don't get sucked in by their low estimates. It's how they hook you. The final price will be 2x that. Second, their movers were friendly but completely incompetent. No organizational skills and lack effort. Third, things are guranteed to break when movers are careless. We ordered three movers and they didn't work with each other at all. Broke our coffee table. We moved with a different company in the past and they were able to load the truck in 1.5 hours. These guys took over 3 hours just to load the truck. We were scared that they were going to break things with every move. They knocked thing over and was extremely unorganized. Overall, we had to pay double the estimated price and took 3 hours more. This company might be the oldest in Chicago but they are also the sh*ttiest (in my humble opinion)! I should of trusted the yelp rating and never gave these guys a chance. These people should not be considered a professional moving company, I can hire random dudes off the street and have better results (seriously). Bottom line: This company doesn't deserve to be around with such incompetent services. Hiring a moving company should take stress away, not add tons of stress. read more

I was incredibly disappointed with my experience with Midway. The actual guys moving me were incredibly professional and hardworking. No problems with them. My issue arose when Midway damaged a piece of furniture of mine. Specifically, they did not wrap a leather chair properly, so the tape was actually stuck to the seat of the chair. When they ripped the tape off, they left a large, very noticeable strip of discoloration where the leather surface had peeled off. This is on the seat of the chair and there is no way to flip the cushion or hide the damage. The guys on the day of my move called it to my attention and told me to make a claim. I made a claim within a week. After two plus months of waiting (and a couple email follow ups) I got a letter offering me $15.00 for my claim. The chair was $800.00 when I purchased it. Now the contract with them does say they will pay .15 cents per pound for damaged goods. I had just hoped they would do the right thing in this case and actually compensate me for he value of the ruined chair. Anyone considering using them should make sure to factor into their budget the extra cost of damaged goods you will have to replace out of pocket. This issue already made a fairly expensive move (almost $2,500) absurdly expensive. read more

So I moved with Midway a few years back and never posted about them. However, I recently moved with a really fantastic moving company and realized how I was very much taken advantage of by Midway Moving, so decided to give them a review now. When the movers showed up, the first thing the driver said to me was that I need to tip them at least $80 a man....WOAH! Ok I'm a poor college kid, trying to move back home, and I was by myself with these movers. I really didn't know what to think. So the guys move my things, the total move took about 4 hours and I was charged about $795, I was quoted $320. Also, they lost one of my glass lamp shades during the move, never got that back. On top of that I gave them each their large tip because I was honestly a bit scared and just wanted them to leave once it was finished. It still upsets me to this day how awful that entire experience was. Do not use these guys unless they decide to do a company overhaul, fire all their existing movers and take in to place solid customer service/ business practices. Do yourself a favor and search yelp for 5-star movers, trust me they exist in Chicago. read more

Please please please DO NOT use this company. They charged me an extra 3k after loading my items. Arrived late. Damged my couch and bed. Lost 20k in boxes - then would not return calls or emails after collecting pull and extra payment. I am currently in a lawsuit with them. I recently moved at the end of July and used this company because my boyfriend used them and liked them. This was the first time I've used movers so I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. They called to confirm the appt the day before and arrived on time. They were very professional and efficient. The only thing that got broken during the move was my $5 body mirror from target which obviously wasn't a big deal. I felt worse for the guy who got cut by it and started bleeding a bit. I think my move took 3.5 hours so I paid about $500 and tipped $100 for the two gentleman. Note: if you move during the middle of the month when they're not that busy, you'll probably save some money because they quote higher for the first and last few days of the month since that's when everyone moves. Also they charge you for the boxes and plastic wrap they use to cover your couch, dresser, etc. Didn't know that. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was one of the people at the main office -- when I tried making an appt and getting a quote, they weren't the friendliest but meh..no big deal. read more

Very disappointing. We worked with Midwest Movers to move out of our home, store our furniture for 11 months and then move into our new home. They gave us a great quote for our move out and for storage. We were very excited to work with them, however, our quote was $1,000 dollars less than what they charged us for our move out! They claimed it was due to materials used, but they saw our home and knew what they would be wrapping for us (TVs and big furniture only). Then, our storage was $200 a month OVER our estimate and they claimed this was due to us needing more pods than they expected. After many phone calls and conversations, Spencer told me because of the trouble they would give us our last month of storage free. THIS NEVER HAPPENED. Also, on our move in, I signed for $2,000 and they ran my credit card for $2,200. That's fraud. Now, I am unable to get anyone to call me back after multiple calls and voicemails. 1. They unplugged all of my cables / Chromecast for my TV and kept those for themselves 2. I called the company to report my stolen items, they said someone would call and they never did 3. WAY over charged. I offered to take some items in the car if they were going to charge a fee for prints/photos. They said they wouldn't charge - in the end they ended up charging $30 per photo/mirror they took ** "Proud Movers of the Cubs"? I'm going to reach out to them as well and make sure they are aware of this unethical behavior. read more
