I am posting the review that my partner won't, as she is too polite to attach her name to something this honest. The short of it: upcharged, got the run around, stuff showed up late, lost a priceless memento and a hell of a lot of jewelry. Avoid. Midway movers is, to be generous to them, the least competent moving company I have ever seen. Avoid at all costs. Wanted to post a much longer review but word limits. The short of it is that the truck broke down outside Illinois and the guy we were in contact with at dispatch (Steve) was a condescending jerk who swore up and down the stuff would be 2-3 weeks late in getting to NYC. Completely ignored literally every question my partner had and answered with vague passive aggressive bs, explaining what a "supply chain" was to her as if she was a literal child and as if the two of us didn't have actual professional experience in the shipping industry. So Steve's convinced the stuff will be upwards of a month late, we need to buy cookware, we need to buy a futon, we need to buy work clothes for my partner and stuff for our dog. We sink probably a grand in getting the bare necessities for a month with none of her possessions. Then, surprise surprise, actually they're just putting our stuff on a different truck (something my partner had asked about as a possible work around and was met with extreme condescension) and it will be there Monday. Take the day off work. So we did. And the truck broke down again. It got there Tuesday. We took another day off work. Yipee. Who even cares by this point. We're already out the money for the stuff we bought, most of which we can't return, because Steve was CONVINCED we were going to be looking at a month with no clothes or furniture. Then we were told that the folks they hired to help with the move in NYC aren't covered in the labor cost we already paid (unlike literally every other company we have ever used). That's another $350 right there. And I'm not talking about tips, of course tips aren't included in the bill and you prepare for them. I mean like basic labor costs, which they apparently did not include in the bill we paid. At some point apparently we got upgraded to "VIP Service" which I have to assume means "we hire competent outside movers on your dime". I can't imagine how much worse non VIP service is. Maybe they just punch you in the face. Oh, and they also lost a jewelry box that included some pretty valuable jewelry (not covered in claims) and a memento from every date we went on for the last six years or so. And they damaged a bunch of other crap. We ended up prying a whopping $150 from them. Woohoo, now we're only, what, $1100 over our moving budget? Pop the champagne. Weeks of careful planning for an already financially difficult and sudden move, shot. Jewelry we can't afford to replace, gone. Priceless mementos and memories, ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯. I once hired a craigslist stranger with a drug problem to help with a friend's move and they were easier to work with, more competent, more careful, and charged a much more competitive rate than Midway Movers. Pros: George, our second driver, was great. And the people they hired (WE hired, I guess, what with the second charge) in NYC were actually pretty great as well (think they were dumbo movers, shout out to them). Claims people weren't actively condescending or blowing smoke up her @$$ so they're better than 90% of dispatch/logistics. Hire literally anyone else. And if you, like us, can't afford anyone else I would recommend U-Hauls, pack mules, or old timey canal barges before I recommend Midway Movers. read more

* 12/8 /2020 I've been calling their claims dept. & they have told me a couple times they are reviewing that matter and will get back to me. I found my notes as to who was in charge of the move and the mover who I knew broke one of the tables. They knew exactly who I was referring to when I gave the name. They said they were aware of that person & seemed to acknowledge he had not done the job professionally/ the way he was supposed to handle furniture. I moved house and workshop with Midway. The crew manager pressured my into tipping the whole crew before they even loaded the trucks. Actually suggesting that I tip them 15%. The crew stopped between the old house and the new house. This was a trip of about 35 miles. After unpacking I discovered power tools were packed by myself in numerous boxes.were missing. read more

In September of 2008 I moved from Woodstock to Chicago. I had one antique piece that I was worried about, but pretty much lots of storage bins, clothes, furniture etc. and it was all ready to load into. The crew showed up on time and several of the guys were very friendly. I was moving from a townhouse to a 3rd floor walk-up and also had to drop things off at garage and a storage unit all within 3 blocks of the condo. The crew was very efficient and seemed to respect my concern for the antique piece. My biggest gripe, while being quoted $800-900, was charged more than $1400. Little charges like a stair charge, additional location stop charges all ended up on the bill. Moving days can be stressful enough, but for that large of a difference I was really disappointed as my brother had recommended them after his experience. I reached out to Midway Moving for one large item local move. We chose them because they stated they had plenty of experience moving pianos and even had a built in piano fee. The mover unfortunately dropped the piano while moving. It was not damaged in any way, but they did shatter a large window and break a whole in the wall. Mistakes happen, we understood, but the cost of repairs totaled in over $600, much more than the move itself cost. I have been trying to reach the claims department for almost 2 months. With frequent calls and multiple voicemails per week, I have still not received any communication as to whether they will refund me for the cost of damages their movers caused to my home. I cannot believe the level of disregard for their error their claims department has displayed. Midway movers and storage did a 3hr move for me and tried to charge me $1000 until I ask for what then it was $600. They moved all my package pretty fast but a week later when I tool the plastic off my chairs I noticed one chair leg was broken. I file a claim with midway and it took them 90 days to offer me $20 for a chair I paid $140 for and only had 4 months. I will never ever do business with them again. read more

I used Midway for at least 3 moves and had zero problems. It is weird that they always send three guys and one never seems to do much "work", but hey, when all of my stuff gets to where I am going in one piece and you don't make me unpack smaller dressers before you'll move them, I don't mind the extra charges. The estimates were always very close to the end figure and I never had a complaint! The guys are also really nice about putting things in the right rooms or moving something if it ended up in the wrong place. Tip for faster moving - have everything packed before they get there - including sofa cushions and have the stuff that is going to go in their wardrobe boxes in pastic bags, etc, so that is one fell swoop. read more

I google searched for a moving company and found Midway Moving and Storage. On the morning of the move I received a call to verify details and was asked if I would like a 3rd mover to be more efficient. I agreed to the additional crew to move a 2 bedroom apt. Basically just the big furniture ( couch, dresser, armoire, file cabinets) I informed the crew I was most concerned about the dresser (perfect condition) in my family for long time. Although a blanket was thrown over the top, it ended up w/ a dent and chips possibly due to other stuff being placed on it. The armoire and dresser were heavy. I assumed not unusual for a moving company. I requested a number of pieces go to the 2nd floor and the queen bed and futon be moved to the basement. In the process of moving the futon to the basement, a number of walls were scratched, gouged and a hole gouged in the ceiling. I hired Midway Moving for their expertise. Additionally moving the armoire and couches upstairs resulted in a deep scratch on one of the steps. As the move was finished I was given paperwork to sign. A lot of the pieces were still wrapped as I was Not able to inspect all the pieces. But I found the dresser to be damaged and told the lead guy and he simply said no need to look at it to just file a claim. One thing I was told a number of times was " you take care of me and we'll take care of you." Yes the crew wanted to make sure they were properly tipped. The work was hard and men definitely gave their best, but evidently their limited experience caused a lot of damage to the house. Question Do experienced movers place filing cabinets horizontally to move?? No but this crew did and I needed to tell them to keep the cabinets vertical. I've been in the Midwest for 18 years and moved 4 times and not a single move ever resulted in the issues I experienced with Midway Moving. The move was May 10th and I filed May 14th and have not heard from the claim dept as yet. For a company claiming to be No 1 in Illinois, I assumed far better service. Also I asked before I hired Midway are they insured. Just in case any furniture was dropped or damage as a result. I was told yes. On moving day, I had to sign off on a number of forms and asked if I wanted additional insurance. My confidence was definitely shaken at that point. BUYER BEWARE. I inadvertently signed a waiver agreeing to no liability on Midway's part. Big risk !!!! Midway covered themselves and EVIDENTLY with no concern for the customer. 3/26/2020 Midway Movers are Thieves. Spend your money elsewhere! They sent an Unqualified Estimator who Low Balled my 91 year old mother on an initial Estimate that got them a Job! Once they Had her Possessions then did a Bait And Switch on her. They had not given her Written Information then Doubled the Price once they had picked up her furnishing. Also, Showing No Compassion in dealing with the then early stage Covad Pandemic, they intimidated her into signing for an additional $250 while waiting for Senior housing maintenance personnel to empty her unit based on Government Restrictions at the time. Not Allowing non residents into the City run Seniors Center. After movers left, she was sent an email saying the price was Now double, feeling Intimidated and Afraid to Argue she paid with a credit card. I'm her Son and she was Embarrassed that I found out how she was Exploited! Movers showed up at destination within estimated time. Items are Damaged and Missing and Midway Movers sent her the BS forms to claim missing and damaged items. Watching the new home being filled it became Readily Apparent that these people had No Respect for my mother's possessions. I watched one mover damage a Valuable Chest by just pushing it off his hand truck by himself. Anyone considering doing business with this alleged Moving Company should go Elsewhere. They gave me an estimate of $3,000 and charged $11,000. I have an attorney about to file suit. All my belongings are in their possession and I am responsible for transferring them to another truck that I arrange and transport my belongings long distance myself. First of all, the actual cost was 33% more than the estimate they gave me. When I questioned how they could be so completely off and they refused to respond. Then I tried to pay the balance with an apple credit card that didn't have the numbers on it. Driver called the office and they told me that the driver forgot his card reader so I was basically out of luck. When asked why I should punished due to their lack organization and irresponsible employees, they basically said tough sh*t. Absolutely the worst!!!! My family has used Midway several times. This will be the very last. My mother used Midway on her relocation to Texas. The insurance means NOTHING! Items arrived broken and damaged. Some items didnt arrive at all. There is no recourse, even after paying for $25000 worth of insurance coverage. When your items are picked up they are taken to a warehouse. From there they are loaded into a truck with other consumers belongings. When the items finally arrived, my mother had to stand outside the truck and point out items that did and did not belong to her. The drivers were so close to putting items that belonged to someone else in our unit. My mothers Sleep Number mattress was folded, of course at the time the one thing on her mind was not "let me file a claim right away". And lets not even mention the $800 in tips to the drivers both in Chicago to Texas. She went home unpacked some of her belongings and hoped the mattress would unfold to normalcy. NOPE! At that point the mattress was trash! She had to junk it and purchase another. What did midway do after two months of chasing them around? Deny the claim. Their reason for denying was because we signed the delivery acknowledgement. I'm assuming at that time we were supposed to un-box every single box, and look through every item from a 4 bdrm, 2 bath household before we sign the form and let the movers leave. My son passed away in 2013 and I had to move. I paid the movers what they ask for to make sure everything was good. There was a mover on each floor and one in the truck. This move didn't go well. They went thru my things what they didn't break they took, and when I called to tell some one the only thing he wanted to know was if I filed a claim. When I told him that these items were priceless to me because these things were given to me by people who had passed away. I was the first to become a Nurse in my family and they took my Nursing Pin and a Timex pendant watch which was given to my mom and uncle. After years of being a loyal customer and storing items with them, while moving my items from storage, the staff opened my boxes on the truck and stole items from me. Please be careful. They also damaged my cabinet and failed to assemble my items properly. I believe Midway may not be properly vetting their movers and consequently sending thieves to move our items. Whatever the case, to date Midway has accepted no responsibility for the theft, damages to my property nor for failure to properly assemble my piano which they disassembled. They also appear to overcharge for hours that you don't even use. They tell you that you can be reimbursed if you don't use the estimated time, but they never do. To date on average my loss has been approximately 15,000.00 with the items they stole and damage to my property. Please beware of this company. Consumer grievance time! Time to vent Avoid at all costs - Midway Movers. The first time I used them was great on 11/28/20 but on 6/9/21, they showed up and said that I had more stuff than I gave on my phone estimate. So now the clock is running and there were 3 guys and one of them was telling how important it is to give a good tip. Then he said we'll take care of you if you take care of us. I arrived at my new residence 2 hours and 45 minutes before they did and I left after they did. Then I called them and said to approach the steep driveway cautiously. The driver did not - he rolled over the beautiful retention wall and then backed the truck over it and nearly bottomed out the side fuel tank on the limestone block. Then they bitched at me for calling the company and asking where they were. Only the smallest guy in the crew and I unloaded and moved the stuff from the truck at a continuous rate. There were two very large guys in the crew and only one of them worked at a time. Total BS! The move took way longer and cost nearly $500 more than the estimate. DO NOT USE this company. While they were stopped for their lunch break, they obviously had consumed a lot of alcohol. While I am not opposed to alcohol consumption, I don't expect people who are moving my life's belongings to be partying while they doing it. I can not get any refund for being over-charged for the bill. No one will return my calls. Save yourself a hassle and don't use Midway Movers!!! All I can say is that this company did the finest job moving me. Scheduling was a breeze. They came out and dropped off boxes a week before my move. On moving day, The truck showed up right on time and the crew was amazing. These guys had a three bedroom three story townhome moved in less than three hours. They took apart all the beds, wrapped all the artwork and anything else I didn't pack. They then moved me into the City and unloaded just as quickly. They put all the beds back together again and were as pleasant as could be. I would give these guys 10 stars if I could as moving is so stressful and Midway Moving took a lot of that stress away. Truly horrendous moving company. I called them yesterday with the request to come the same day. They said it was doable and we agreed to 6:30 pm. They never showed up. After I called them around 7 pm (mind you, they didn't call me) they said they were delayed and that they would arrive for sure by 7:30 pm. It turned to be 8 pm. Then they proceeded to walk all over my new rugs with their shoes on inside my new house. They also way overcharged me, and after the moving was done they charged me an additional fee. After I complained, the main office said they would inquire with the movers, and that they will call me back. Guess what, they never called me back and charged me the additional fee anyways. The folks on the truck were terrific. But the fun ended when they broke a glass piece that covers a picture. The guys took it back to the warehouse for repair. A month passed and I started calling and calling. Despite having an incident report from the truck, they claimed they didn't have it. This continued for several more months when they finally located it in the fall, they said it was ready to be returned. They did, in December, without the glass being replaced. They've been unresponsive since despite multiple calls and texts to the lady handling it. There are plenty of moving companies in Chicago. This one should be avoided. read more

My movers were three hours late. Once they finally showed up they were slow and unprofessional. One guy took a smoke break after not even 2 hours of work. The customer service was poor. I would never use this company again. I ended up moving a significant amount of the boxes myself, which is unacceptable when you are paying a moving company $90+/hr. Used them in September rep was Ty Porter, I had no issues, I've since sent them 3 clients. They received a family and friends discount. I call today to request a quote and he quoted me the exact price to move an entire house vs a 2 bedroom apartment. The excuse is the rates are higher in July and August. The rates are that much higher or are y'all trying to rip people off? I'm not even offered the family and friends discount. I call back and inquire to speak to a sales manager and the lady puts the exact guy back on the phone! He proceeds to tell me he offered me a lower rate with two guys instead of 3. I said and how is that a lower rate when it's hourly and 2 guys will naturally take longer than 3?!? He says I am correct. He also tells me the travel is 1 hr. The distance is 8.3 miles a 25 minute trip max and I'm being generous. Not to mention he never greeted me when he took the call and he sounded like he was still laying in bed. Midway Moving & Storage were excellent! (After a Terrible experience with Two Men and a Truck.) We were moving from another state, and were on a tight timetable. We had to empty 2 PODS (on 2 different days) into a 2nd fl condo. Midway Moving was available on short notice, sent an efficient team with an experienced foreman to coordinate them. They worked faster, were cheaper, better organized, polite, cheerful, professional... and they moved our upright piano without a scratch!!! They wrapped antique furniture to prevent damage, were careful with fragile items, and even assembled our beds that the other movers had left in a jumbled heap. They placed boxes & furniture where we asked them to and finished before the expected time. We were very grateful, pleased & relieved! read more

I have used Midway twice now. Each time I've been more than satisfied. These guys work their butts off. They haul 4-5 boxes at a time with hemp straps. No wasted trips. On moving in they were expert at finding ways to maneuver furniture through curved stairways and doors. I would use them again in a heart beat! read more

If this review were about the movers and the move itself, I'd give Midway 5-stars. Joseph and his crew were exceptional both at pick up and drop off. They loaded our things onto and off of their truck very efficiently. They were friendly and courteous and I would gladly request them for any/all future moves I may need movers for! Where Midway loses stars is with their quoting of estimates. The quote for our move was about $800 less than what we inevitably ended up paying. After reviewing the quote documents I did notice that the time for the move was grossly underestimated by the person who quoted my wife. I honestly don't know how a 3 man moving crew could be expected to drive from Chicago to Aurora and load a 1450 sq. ft. townhome w/ 2 car garage in 3 hours flat. Our crew was fantastic and efficient and I don't believe they could have loaded the contents of my townhome onto their truck any faster than they did. I'm not sure if the estimators need to improve their analytical skills or if they just need to do some ride-alongs and observe the reality of how long a move ACTUALLY takes but that is the one area where Midway Moving needs improvement! If you use Midway, request Joseph and his crew! You will not be disappointed! But it may behoove you to add some projected time to any initial quotes provided by Midway in order to avoid sticker shock when it comes time to pay. read more

I used these guys to move me from my apartment to my first condo. I found out later that they are one of the worst companies ever. They broke two pieces of furniture but said that they can't be responsible for it because I signed a waiver against anything MDF breaking (yes I have a few MDF pieces from Target). That would be great and all but the two pieces were solid oak Ethan Allen dining room chairs the I inhearitaed from my mother. Ethan Allen does not make anything with MDF. The other thing is that they stole my jug of spare change. I keep a old gallon size wine jug of spare change (nickles, dimes & quarters, no filler pennies, they get their own container) I use the change I collect throughout the year to pay for Christmas presents(that stuff really adds up fast!) I had it set off to the side for me to take in my car to the new place but with the chaos of the move I didn't see them grab it. By the time they delivered everything and left the new place I still hadn't realized it was missing. The next day when I called to report the missing money the lady sent me a claim form and said they would conduct an investigation and get back to me. I filled out the form,emailed it in and never heard a word from them again. I have all of the emails to prove that I had the correct email address (she emailed the claim form to me) but never heard back. When I contacted the attorney who handled my condo closing he told me that I had chosen the single worst company ever to move and that they had numerous complaints against them filed with the BBB. Don't take my horrible review for it, check out the BBB website. As of today, according to their site, in the past 36 months they have had 55 complaints and only 16 were closed. 16, really? I have worked in customer service for 10+ years so i really take negative reviews with a grain of salt but there are actual hard facts to back up my review. Do your research and say a little prayer. DO NOT use Midway unless you want to be charged DOUBLE. They "quoted me $100 per hour plus $100 truck fee. That sounded very fair. What they didn't mention was that they would charge $60 to carry an HDTV! Even though they are lighter and easier to carry than old tube TV's, these guys have the nerve to charge $60 to "wrap and carry" the HDTV. To add to the insult, they charged $60.00 to wrap and carry a glass coffee-table and $60 to move a glass circular table. The main guy mentioned, "I gave you a break and didn't charge you for the glass end table." Thanks dude! In addition, they charge $60 per role of clear wrap for furniture. Fair too, but NOT WHEN THEY PURPOSELY WRAPPED BOXES THAT WERE NON- FRAGILE!!! Can you believe they had the nerve to WRAP A BOX THAT HAD GROCERIES FROM THE KITCHEN SHELVES?!?!?! On top of that, they EVEN WRAPPED HEADBOARDS! Our place is not that big, so it would have easily been done in 4 hours. They took 5 by stretching out their movements. I've used movers before, so I know what a fair pace should be, and these guys truly slowed it down enough so that I just had to ask them if they were ready to go twice. Upon arrival, these guys managed to damage the walls in our new place (as well as damaging the walls in the old place whenever I was not around watching their work). for local moves, I've always used Checkmate Movers and they are awesome. when I recently had to do a cross-country move, I made a big big mistake. I moved from Chicago to Massachusetts for a new job and was so stressed by the process that I hired the first company I called for a quote...Midway. they were reasonably priced and extremely nice, and seemed to genuinely care about my belongings. they accidentally nicked the ceiling while bringing in my bed and right away went to the hardware store for plaster and fixed it on the spot. I tipped them generously. soon afterwards, I began to discover things that were obviously not treated as they should have been...items that I unfortunately didn't immediately realize were chipped, torn or broken. out of nowhere, my beautiful dining room table cracked completely in half the other day for no reason. the furniture restorer I contacted told me the movers must have piled way too much heavy stuff on it in the truck. I called Midway and left two messages which were unsurprisingly not returned. I'd already found that my futon was torn open in two places on the underside, my coffee table was chipped and my bookcase was not only chipped, but missing two pieces. I feel like a total sucker who was taken advantage of. NOT recommended. read more

This moving company was horrible! Not only did they break the glass in my back door. They couldn't get my couch into my new place. They damaged the couch horribly, put 2 holes in my wall and on top of all that overcharged me! I could've had a better move using 2 guys off the street and the customer service is horrible!
