They piped a message (happy birthday) *and* on their own included a beautifully packaged single candle and matches! Everyone loved it- rich, beautiful & not too sweet. The cake decoration, service and packaging was above and beyond! My second awesome experience with this business. Came here after 6pm for their happy hour and got the pistachio and rose macaroons ($1 each). When I got my macarons, I noticed that one of them is cracked so I told the cashier and she apologized and exchanged it for me. In terms of flavor, they both tasted delicious and not overpoweringly sweet. The pistachio one has the authentic pistachio flavor and not the fake extract flavor if you understand what I mean. It also has a hint of rose water which I really enjoyed. The rose macaron has a nice fragrant and balanced flavor as well but I liked the pistachio one more. A good macaron would have a crispy outer shell and chewy texture when you eat it. The macarons here are not crispy and the filling tasted very plain. The almond meal that they use here are not refined so the cookie shells have a rough surface with the big almond bits. Overall, the flavor was there and I really like the size of the macarons here since they are a little bit bigger than the general ones. My Bf and I were strolling around Hayes Valley last Sunday when I saw a sign for Miette on the corner of Octavia and Hayes. I said: "oh, this is Patty P.'s favorite candy store!" Bf: "who's Patty P?" *He has this confused look on his face * Bf: "are you being an elite snob again?!" He didn't hear my response because I was already walking ten steps ahead of him. As I entered the store, I was greeted by a multitude of colors: soft pinks, pale yellows, baby blues, light lavender. Lots of frills everywhere. CUTENESS OVERLOAD! Pillowy macarons piled in clear jars, perfectly frosted cupcakes, cookies, chocolates and candies imported from Europe, marshmallow sticks and --- a whole wall dedicated to licorice. I'm not a fan of licorice per se, but my curiosity was piqued. There's licorice imported from France, England, Belgium, etc. These are sold by the pound and there's over ten varieties to chose from. TIP: the licorice from Belgium is made with ammonium chloride. (ok chemistry geeks: NH4 Cl) instead of the traditional salty taste of the ones made with sodium chloride. If you're feeling sleepy because of your carb-filled breakfast from Stacks next door, get the Belgian licorice. You can always use a little bit of ammonia, right? =P Service was polite and amazingly enough, I only walked out with a Rococo chocolate bar (infused with rose oil -- I liked this!), a few macarons and caramels. If I could dream up my own candy shop, this place would be the closest to my ideal. Unlike a Dylan's Candy Bar, this shop is very elegant and cute. I don't like Dylan's very much because it is geared towards young children, and they went wild with their color scheme and theme. I like how it has a feel of an old-fashion candy shop like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but everything was updated. We tried a sample of their macaroons and it wasn't that great. Oh how I love sweet surprises!! I cannot express how much I love these macaroons!! Miette creates and bakes the BEST macaroons ever!!! Ever since my first bite a few years ago, nothing and nobody has compared to their quality in the makings. The consistency of these are made to perfection! In every bite, there's a bit of fluffiness, a bit of chewy, and a bit of crunch - all balanced so evenly! Each flavor (some of my faves - grapefruit, rose garden, pistachio, hazelnut) is true to it's name and not overly sweet or tart or takes over the "cookie" part of it. I have also had their ice cream cookie sandwich. Cooling on a hot day and satisfying with the shortbread cookie. The lavender shortbread cookie pairs really well with a warm black tea soy latte. Miette bakes so many wonderful creations. You will NOT be disappointed! I wish they could teleport themselves to Arizona! The location I usually go to is on the pier. Would've been 5 stars but -2 stars for the missing candied peanut thingy. I ordered a dozen of the "chocolate with Italian merengue" cupcakes for my best friend's bday. These are our absolute favorite cupcakes, however, when I received the cupcakes I thought the little red candy looked different but just assumed it was a lighter color - maybe they used a different ingredient. Also, I was in a rush as I was late for the bday party. Unfortunately, when we went to eat the cupcakes we realized they replaced the wonderful crunchy candied peanut/baked bean thing with a little jelly bean. The Macarons are on the soft chewy side, and I am one of the rare people that like that texture, but if you like your Macarons on the traditional side of crunchy on the outside and then chewy while you're chewing, these may not be for you. The cake itself was very moist and the frosting was just perfect. It flabbergasts me how this place gets such great reviews for their macarons. To be honest I am a bit confused as to what they're trying to achieve with their macarons. You can tell they did not blanch the almonds, did not grind them fine (when making the almond flour used in the shells), and it also makes me wonder if the batter was mixed thoroughly enough? The appearances are just sad, especially if you're used to Ladurée or Pierre Hermé. I do wonder if it's deliberate; as in, perhaps they're trying for the "rough but all natural, Californian look"? I don't know. All this would not have mattered much if the taste were great. But the texture or taste did not convince me either. It's very mushy. I am used to light and crisp shells, with a slightly gooey inside layer. This was mushy from beginning to finish, and the ratio of cream filling was a bit too high for my taste. As for the caramel flavour, it was so subtle I could hardly taste the caramel. It was very very sweet though. I feel like overall this is a very "Americanised" version of a macaron, either by design or by accident. The brownie, however was decent. I don't think I will return. I can RAVE about everything Miette...for sure, but I'm going for the jugular and I'm not going to make the baker's happy, but here goes: BANANA CREAM TART...mmm...mmm...the BEST!!! They use to have this available daily but for whatever reason stopped. I called them last week and BEGGED...please make it for me...please...please. I was going to Lake Tahoe and wanted to bring it to our host. No one in the entire San Francisco Bay Area makes anything like this. Baker starts with a crust that is like a fresh butter cookie...(not the usual flaky crust), then spreads a thin layer of dark chocolate to cover the crust...follows that with fresh sliced bananas and the best ever cream. Cute store, lots of interesting sweet things and a great place to find little gifts, especially gifts for yourself. I ended up buying a couple of crazy expensive chocolate bars: Michael Mischner 72% cacao and toffee ($12) and Leone Assenzio ($7). So what does a $12 chocolate bar taste like? Delicious of course, but not markedly different than any other gourmet bar especially when toffee is involved. The Leone Assenzio had a liquorice flavor to it perhaps tied to the absinthe that is supposedly mixed in. A whimsical store, perfect to include on any Hayes walk. oh Miette - you used to be the absolute BEST. Your macarons were always the perfect combination of airy light crisp exterior, ultra chewy gooey interior, and richest of creamy buttercream centers. However yesterday I got in for a long-anticipated visit, and found the macarons were... just not right. I tried several flavours, but can best describe what was wrong specifically with the chocolate. The cookie part looked like a brownie, and tasted like it too. But the texture... it was grainy, as if you'd stirred in finely grated coconut. Gone was the melty smooth airy confectionary, replaced with a leaden, gritty textured denseness that stuck to the mouth. I'll not go into detail about the macarons (OK the hazelnut macaron was delicious!) but what I really liked was that they carried Rococo chocolate, thanks to Kristi K's recommendation. It's dark chocolate with Lavender, Sea Salt, Earl Grey or Jasmine. Not too sweet and just right for someone who doesn't like milk chocolate. Apparently they have cotton candy sometimes and I wasn't aware of this when I was there. I've got to come back one day to try the cotton candy. If you have even an inkling of a sweet tooth, get yourself to Hayes Valley and indulge in pure excess. Miette is the kind of place that might make you hate yourself in the morning, but it's going to feel so good while you're doing it. Sweets. It's all about sweets. Expects pinks and bows and frilly stuff. Disregard it if you have issues. You're here for sweets. Cupcakes may be out of fashion (seriously, #firstworld?) but here at Miette, they never went out of style. I devoured a lemon with most cake and ample amount of lemon curd in the frosting. The chocolate on chocolate was as delicious as promised. I was let down by the chocolate with Italian marshmallow cupcake. It was beautifully adorned and decorated but the cake was dry and the topping didn't blend as well with the cake as I would have thought. Still, a fine cake... just not as good as it looked (and in all fairness, it looked beautiful). There are also all sorts of candy bars, fancy Euro chocolates, candies, jellies, toffees, caramels, etc. If it's sweet, it's here. The decor is chic without the shabby. Again, unapologetically feminine but that should matter little to the fatty fat fat amongst you. And those chocolate bars? Unlike any others you've had. If Martha Stewart opened a candy store, it would look like Miette Confiserie. It's a candy boutique - a dream come true with something for everyone, from the limited chocolate edition pop rocks flavor to every Jelly Belly flavor (sold separately). Lots of licorice and interesting chocolate bars imported from all over Europe. The prices are high but you can find some unique items in here. If it is a candy that you can find elsewhere, it doesn't make sense to buy it here. And yes, they have top notch cupcakes too (I wish there were more varieties. After brunch on Hayes, I finally made my first visit over to Miette's candy store. I've been a long devotee of the original pastry shop so this visit was long overdue. Miette Confiserie is a dream to say the least. The store is filled with imported candies in glass jars, others formed into bouquets of flowers and pretty shades of pink and pale green docorate the walls. It's everything you ever wanted in a candy store but never saw in real life, until now. I loved that every candy had a name card that explains a little bit about where the candy came from, what it's made of and why Miette chose to have it at their store. They do have a limited selection of pastries but they still offered a few items like cupcakes, macarons, and a few cakes. I've always been more of a pastry dessert girl than a fanatic of candy but I had full faith in Miette on the candy. They didn't disappoint! Caramels - One of the things I hate about caramel is how overly sweet, chewy, or hard they can be. The ones Miette sells has given me a new appreciation for caramel candy (even though they don't made them themselves). They're made with local and organic ingredients and you can taste the quality. The multiple flavors just melt in your mouth. It was buttery sweet, nutty and even hints of fruit that went down so smooth. I'm sad I only bought one! Petit Fours - These little cakes are beautiful. It's covered with white chocolate and hints of lemon flavor and is topped off with a real sugar flower petal. The name tag said they're only available during holidays so I assumed they had some left from Mother's Day. Perfectly fresh and delicious! Chocolate Malt Balls - I had to get a mixed bag of dark, milk and white malt balls. One bite and I knew these were not like anything you could get at Walgreens. I didn't expect how thick layer of chocolate was going to be but it was so good. I love that there was probably more chocolate than malt (though there was a good portion of each). I have one chocolate foiled candy left waiting for me at home. It's a chocolate, flavored with strawberries and cream and made to look like a real berry. It's absolutely adorable, which is why its lasted this long outside of my stomach but I think tonight's the night! This is the cutest bakery/candy shop that I have ever been to, EVER! I literally felt like a lil girl once I walked in and out... rushing back home to dig into what I got LOL Their "Old Fashion Cupcake w/ Italian Meringue" is one of the BEST chocolate cupcakes that I've had in a while. The cupcake itself wasn't too sweet nor too chocolaty, but it was just right. It was moist and not crumbly. The Italian meringue was a bit different, in a good way; I didn't think it was too sweet, not bad for my first time having meringue. The classy and boutique appearance from the front window, initially fooled me, I though it was some furniture shop that was displaying them with attractive accents of candy. Walking by the door, I caught the scent of freshly made sweets and chocolate treats and was immediately drawn in from the street. Inside the high ceilings, the white walls with sea foam green trim accents create a very open and peaceful atmosphere. The wall of candies are neatly and cleanly displayed, the tables are uncluttered and beautifully showcased. I almost didn't want to grab some of the candies... notice I said almost... I loved the retro kind of feel that they took in there approach of the presentation of the desserts, cakes that stood out in my mind was the Scharffen Berger cake and the Old Fashion cake with the cherry on top. The french style macaroons were awesome, crisp and light, with a moist and flavorful inside, personal favorites of mine are the pistachio and the hazelnut. On the tables you will see a all sort of enticing candies in a spread that was reminiscent of something you would see in a Martha Stewart magazine article, some personal favorites of mine, like the vanilla marshmallows and fleur de sel caramels. If the point of Miette was to look beautiful, I'd be giving this business 5 stars. However, that's not the sole purpose of the business. I won't beat around the bush: I was very disappointed in the cupcakes, which were heavily touted by online reviewers I'd read. I found them bland, flavorless, and overpriced. I especially disliked the chocolate cupcake, which was overly sweet and lacking in much chocolate flavor. Also, the size of these cupcakes is a little bit smaller than average, so for $3.25, you wonder what makes these worth so much more money. I also purchased one of their mini-Scharffen Berger cakes, for $6. It was quite a bit better than the cupcakes, but still doesn't make it to my mental list of favorite chocolate cakes. I saw that the larger size 6" cake was $35 (!!!!) and nearly fell over...um, a wee bit pricey for what it is!!! For those of you who love cute candy shops but require disability access, know that this place is NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE: there are steps leading into the front door. What a shame. Overall, I was not impressed by my experience here. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but at the end of the day, you came here to get something tasty to eat that you can't make better at home, right? read more

Oh man, I thought I liked french macarons but I guess I was wrong... I LOVE THEM! Miette has shown me the light on these adorable and yummy treats. I have only tried french macarons a handful of times in my life and I thought they were ok at best; not very impressive... but at Miette they're so chewy and soft and omg. A friend of mine and I decided to get the grapefruit, chocolate, and rose flavors. My favorite was the grapefruit, but the other two were good as well. They were all packed in cute box with string, which I still have (why waste a cute box? Haha). We also tried some samples of peanut brittle(?) and that was delicious as well. The whole shop is adorable with tables filled various sweets in cute packaging and little notes to explain what they are, including the price. I wish I could have tried a little bit of everything because it looked all scrumptious, sigh. The service was also nice, which fit the sugar-coated aura of this place. I fell in LOVE. Sugar heaven. So many types of candy and sweets. They're on the pricier end but I think its worth it. From different brands and types from all over the world. I didn't even want to leave, felt like a kid again. The embarcadero location doesn't even compare. My first visit was this past weekend and believe to be the cutest candy store ever. So full of colors. And the staff was super friendly. Happy Hour macarons are half off. 4-6pm, 1 dollar each. Cheers to that!! read more

MIETTE MACARONS. I've been on this strange strange macaron obsession/rampage. Well I guess it's not strange.. they are pretty delectable. But anyway Jessica C. and I tried a grand total of - 5 - different places over the past weekend and MIETTE is my personal favorite in SF. Something about their natural coloring and fluffy filling tickles my fancy. Also their shell is lightly crispy and cookie is dense, slightly grainy, and chewy which is macaron perfection in my eyes.
