MIETTE MACARONS. I've been on this strange strange macaron obsession/rampage. Well I guess it's not strange.. they are pretty delectable. But anyway Jessica C. and I tried a grand total of - 5 - different places over the past weekend and MIETTE is my personal favorite in SF. I'm a sucker for candy, baked goods, delightfully girly packaging and the color pink. Miette delivers on all fronts. Walking in will send your seratonin levels soaring. There is just no way you can come into this shop and not be happy. The packaging and placement is perfect. Candies, both nostalgic and whimsical, wrapped up in cellophane and stuck with the "miette" sticker to seal it. Conversation hearts, licorice bites, chocolate covered gummy bears, etc etc. All looking so pretty in their displays. Bunches of lollipops grouped together, all swirly and fluffy looking. Round ones with one color swirled with white. Long unicorn horn looking ones with the rainbow colors, slim ones on long sticks tipped with with shiny glass looking hearts, ring pops in multiple colors, some heart shaped, some gem shaped. Wafer discs of all colors bagged together, gum drops, gumballs! Jelly beans of one color filling up big glass vases. Whimsical, pink, frilly, and girly. I love it. It's Wonka's candy shop if Wonka was trying to impress a ballerina, or Glinda the good witch of Oz. Jars lined up of loose imported chocolates and hard candies from around the world (mostly Italy and France) wrapped up in delicate papers and in fantastic colors. One in particular was described as a cloud burst. A tiny candy a little bigger than a jolly rancher. They were a dollar a piece but I had never tasted a cloud before so there you go. Unwrapped it's a white soft candy covered in sparkling sugar and...well...it tastes like you think a cloud wood. Sweet and fluffy, a little chewy then it melts in your mouth. I can't describe it but it's magical! Marzipan treats, chocolate squares, fizzy candies, Mary Jane's. All for the picking. Varying from $.25 a piece to just shy of two bucks each. And a chocolate table! With imported Italian chocolate bars, Vosges, Mast Bros. out of Brooklyn, and other small batch confectioners in the states. Wrapping up their bars in layers of shiny paper and beautiful papers with scrolly lettering. Another table with their own baked goods. Plastic tubes filled with chocolate wafers, ginger snaps, etc. Baggies filled with round, puff like marshmallows, lavender shortbread, chocolate sables. Smaller tubes filled with pink and white meringue kisses. Oh the beauty of it all! At the counter they've got fresher baked goods--macarons (the chocolate one was obscene), cupcakes, tarts, and ice cream sandwiches (which change daily. I had a fantastic little one with creme fraiche ice cream and a gingery cookie. Tart and sweet at the same time! Also--of no surprise--fresh cotton candy! Not sure how often they run the machine as it was off when I went but it was close to close so that could have explained it. Or maybe it's made to order? The place isn't cheap. For the traditional candies you could easily get a box of conversation hearts in a box at Walgreens for much cheaper (and for a larger amount) but sometimes it's nice to give a really fancy wrapped gift for a special occasion. Or just treat yourself to something pretty once and a while. My little cousin turns three next week so I stocked up on pretty lollipops and candies for her for her special day. Also treated myself to a few sweets for the plane ride back, and cookies and other imported candies to take home to share with friends and family. I felt like a kid in a candy store, because that's exactly what this place reminds me of. They had all sorts of glass jars filled with different candy and chocolates. Specifically, I came here to try their macarons because I needed to compare them to the ones from Paulette. I tried one hazelnut macaron and it was good, but not as good as Paulette's. They are a bit bigger in size, but the appearance and texture of the macaron is like a cookie. Where's the nice semi-crispy shell? I really like the decor of this place. You see a lot of contemporary bakeries these days that focus on one specialty item like macarons and cupcakes and their stores all start to look the same (e.g. Sprinkles, Kara's, Paulette). I haven't really seen a place like this yet. They also had a giant chocolate bunny in the glass counter on display that reminded me of that episode of The Simpsons when Homer was dreaming he was in Candyland and he took a bite out of that chocolate bunny that was hoping by. I have had their lovely macaroons...but my bestie said she love the cupcakes. i did not argue....but have not found many I loved. Sometimes I get so blown away by the personality and aesthetic of a business, being an objective evaluator of the experience beyond the looks just jumps right out the window. I get caught up in an infatuation with a place and its clouds my own good judgement. Its like that for me at Miette, which is undoubtedly one of the most precious, gorgeous, well curated bakery shops I have even been into in the United States but with a fairly limited selection of wares once you get inside. It reminds me of a visit to an old school ice cream shop meets a visit to Pierre Herme in Paris --its an almost transcendent aesthetic. Clean, pretty, with just a handful of well curated items to choose from. Coming to Miette is like looking too long at a really good looking person: you can't help stuttering even while trying hard to keep your cool. But do the looks go below the surface? The items at Miette are tasty, and uber precious. Their baked goods, including cupcakes, tea cookies and french macarones are curated and cultivated to appear like precious gems, tiny treasures, and perfect morsels. The goods are beautiful. Good macarons, and nice cupcakes. This in an adorable shop, but not the spilling over french patisserie with more choices than you can possibly narrow down. its better looking here than tasting. I am torn on this place. Now, I LOVE candy. I have one of those insatiable sweet tooths that needs a sugar fix for the sake of humanity because god knows if I don't get something sugary to suck on like NOW, then heads might start to roll. So I was curious (especially after Laura B's review) to check it out. OK, if the Stepford wives opened a candy shop, this is what it would look like. It was pink. It was floral. It was cute. Too cute. Sheepishly, I have to say that I was slightly enamored of the almost cartoonish/Willy Wonka quality of the decor.... But I have to say the candy selection wasn't terribly impressive. They had some cool things from Europe which I was pleased to see, but they also had your average run of the mill special candy shop kind of treats----gumballs, gummy bears, licorice,caramels, etc.That being said,I wouldn't say that Miette is THE source of your sweet desires. If you want chocolate, I recommend Bittersweet, and for fudge the sweet shop in Tiburon. But I echo other reviewers that it was pricey. The macarons here are delicious! They are more on the chewier side. I prefer them over Chantal Guillon's macarons, despite their selection of flavors being more limited. Miette doesn't add food coloring or other artificial ingredients to their macarons (which is pretty obvious because none of them are bright colored like hot pink or lime green). I had a hard time differentiating between flavors because most of them shared the same beige color which comes from its' almond base. If you're coming for the macarons, make sure you come on a weekday after 6PM so you can purchase them at Happy Hour price--$1 each! Overall, the store is cute and quaint much like the other shops in the surrounding area that call Hayes Valley home. read more

Came here on a Sunday morning (3/18/2012) because my fiance wanted some sweet treats; we arrived at 10:50am, the sign says will open at 11am, so we waited right outside the door. From outside, we could see some staffs were inside organizing their items and pretty sure they saw us waiting; there were also some other customers waiting outside as well. 11:05am - someone opened the door and asked if we were the one who made some special orders, we said no, then she said "oh we are preparing that order now, please wait for 10 more minutes or so" then closed the door immediately. I was like, really???! It's fine that you guys needed to prepare your orders, but it's not a right choice to keep your other customers waiting outside the store when it's passed the time you were supposed to open. Why can't we just look around the store inside? Unlike they had only one staff (they had at least 3)! We still went in by 11:09am, only one staff was smiling at us, the other two looked unhappy the entire time. Well, I gave all 3 stars for their products, not the customer service. read more

C-U-T-E!!!!!!!! Walked around Hayes Valley the other day. I am always amazed how many adorable boutiques and stores pop up around this neighborhood. Each one sweeter than the next. Miette, no exception. Very Parisian, pink, sweet, lovely. I loved the "interesting" candy selection as well as the obvious; lollipops, marshmallow fluffs, etc. They have a small but tempting array of cupcakes, too --- cute li'l ones at that. Context: I had this at my friend's birthday party. I purchased neither the cake nor cupcakes. I'm a committed cake lover. It's one of the reasons I exercise -- so I can eat a ton of cake in times like these. I'm only half joking... Upsides: The white icing was delicious and fluffy. It was lightly sweetened and quite delicate on the palette. Loved this part of the cake completely. Downsides: The lemon curd was way too sweet. It was aggressive and masked the white icing flavor and cake itself. I was not a fan of this intermediate layer. In addition, the cake was so dry! I'm thinking it's because my friend had purchased the cake earlier that day and we were celebrating at night but even so....if it was baked the same day the cake would not have been that dry. My guess is that they were selling older, less fresh cakes from the back...? I'm not entirely sure, but I'm just putting my honest review forward about this place's product. I can't believe I dropped about $40 here. This place is heaven situated in front of the park behind Stacks in Hayes Valley. Pink vintage looking decor and a girly feel. I bought all the flavors of the macaroons, a sugar cookie, a bag of jordan almonds, Smarties (the European kind) and a bunch of other small candy. Macaroons are too flakey and cakey for my taste. I guess I just like the manufactured uniform shape of Paulette's. I can't remember which flavors I chose, but majority was too sweet. They offer a lot of foreign candy here. It's fun to peruse their selections and read the descriptions of the candy and it's origin. A historic candy lesson! As expected with foreign goods, it's a tad steep in here. My friend said the pistachio was fine, nothing to write home about. We both weren't fans of the filling--the consistency resembled that of a whipped cream frosting on a cake. Service was meh. We stood there, staring right at the two girls who decided it was more important to finish gossiping and giggling about the customers they helped right before us. Love their macarons. I have been trying and sampling all the different macaron places throughout San Francisco and Los Angeles and I must say Miette's macarons are still my all time favorite. My only complaint is that they never make any new flavors! I have been going there for a year now and I am forced to consistently get the same flavors over and over again. What makes these macaroons different is the fact that they are much chewier and dense than all the other macarons I have had. This was a nice candy shop I found while walking around Hayes Street. It was a small shop on the side of the street with a little bit of outside seating. They have a lot of unique candies available. At the register, they have a few baked goods and some macaroons in jars. The macaroons didn't look like any I had seen, but the cupcakes looked good. I ended up grabbing some Turkish candies and jelly beans. They have a large amounts of candies by the pound, but you can get half pounds or quarter pounds, which is what I got . A candy land for the young and adults. As you walk up to the store front with pale pink awning, I feel like I am Alice in Wonderland. The store is beautiful displaying a bygone era of the 1800's, the staff all dressed with vests and bow ties and are all good looking and professional. I was in amazement at each display with Bon bons, marzipan cakes, French macaroons, candies that are essentially unique. You want to buy every candy but not eat them because they are so pretty. I ended up getting two macarons but sadly disappointed. The chocolate orange flavor was ok but the texture was too cakey for me. Before my dinner at Il Borgo I stopped by Miette Confiserie and it was still open. That was cool. There were many new candies that I saw. Their candy can be really cheap like .25 a piece of hard candy from Holland, or almost $20 for a candy bar. This time got 3 things: Gianduia 1865 Caffarel $1 a small piece - gold wrapper, tasted fine. Similar to the blue wrapper one. Gianduia fondente Caffarel $1 a small piece - blue wrapper. Tried this, it's a rich, creamy, chocolate hazelnut candy. Very smooth. Caffarel Eccellenza Piemontese Pure Cioccolato Gianduia $5 - yellow wrapper from Italy. - Haven't tried yet. I love stopping in here to pick up candies and sweets as gifts for friends and family members. And occasionally a treat for myself! Some old fashioned candies, unique licorice from around the world, Jelly Belly jellybeans, cupcakes, cakes, cookies, suckers, chocolates, malt balls, sour ribbon... those are just the tip of the iceberg on what you can find inside this incredibly pink store. Today I stopped in to pick up a few gifts for family (a tin of chocolate "sardines" for my dad! HA!) and treated myself to an absolutely amazing ice cream sandwich. Sitting at the park across the street in the misting rain and enjoying every bite, I really felt like I was in heaven. It's a euro candy shop with special packaging, cheap prices, great customer service, nice location, etc, I came in and ordered the strawberry macaron, chocolate lavender, and pistachio. I purchased macarons and a lemon tea pound cake at the Ferry building. The macarons weren't great, super sweet, and texture is a bit off. The ganache wasn't all that great either (hazelnut vs coffee). The sizes were not matching and some were breaking apart in the jars. I definitely had better. I do agree the lemon tea pound cake is hecka good. Though I toss/got rid of the icing, the taste was good as it wasn't overly sweet and it was devoured all in one setting. read more

What a beautiful little sweet shop! I came in particularly for the macarons ($1.85) and tried four flavors. Rose geranium, strawberry, chocolate lavender, and pistachio. Yum! The texture of these macarons are a little chewier than most macarons I've tried, but what a wonderful texture that is! I love how these treats aren't laden with food coloring and you can see the almond meal they are made with. What makes these macarons even better? The beautifully light buttercream center that is made with just the right touch of sweetness (the chocolate lavender filling was a bit richer). The macarons were a reasonable price in my mind since I'm used to paying over $2 for one at other bakeries, but some of the other items seemed over priced. What a treat for the eyes though! I got salted caramels-- I had bought my boyfriend one to give him when I met back up with him at our hotel but my secret shame is the first two were so good I ate his and didn't mention it to him. Shh. My friends squealed when they happened upon a Lion Bar, which is apparently fairly hard to come by in the states. "It's what a peanut butter Twix wishes it could be." said my friend. Walking into Miette is like walking into a little girl's dream candy shop except with adult preferences - Not those kind of preferences, get your mind outta the gutter! They have chocolates from around the world and super adorbs hand wrapped candy flowers. However, on my quest to find the perfect cupcake, I tried their gingerbread cupcake and was sadly disappointed! Food Network, how you break my heart! There was a decent molasses taste, but I prefer a slightly stronger ginger taste and the frosting was overwhelming the cupcake. Maybe less frosting or more flavor in the cake part? Also, the cake was oily! Not cool! Oh the bright side, even though my initial first bite/impression of their gingersnaps was that there was too much butter, my second impression is that these are highly addicting and proceed with caution. Noticed that they keep adding more of their own creations, which is always a good thing so you're not simply a reseller. Ginger Snap Ice Cream Sandwich: Very creamy ice cream center. Not terribly sweet but pairs well with the ginger snap. A little dry for a ginger snap, but the moist ice cream made up for that. Best waiting a few minutes for it to soften after getting it from the freezer. Chocolate Mint Ice Cream Sandwich: For a drier cookie, this felt extremely chocolaty.
