Their donuts have a nice bready-ness to them, not like super sugary donuts you can get from a convenience store. There's almost a "healthiness" to the sugar levels in these donuts, which I found dangerously addicting but also quite refreshing. It's not a blast of sweetness in your mouth, but it does derive a lot of flavor from richness, chocolateyness and/or nuttiness depending on what you ordered. Chais and espressos are quite good! So, I'm an environmental scientist. I take my profession very seriously. A crucial part of the scientific process is "replication"...you don't draw conclusions from a single observation; you make repeated observations until you can make definitive statements based on statistical probabilities. Once a conclusion is articulated, an ideal protocol for ecosystem science is "monitoring": regular, repeat observations to ensure you have adequate data to determine if changes occur and, if so, the magnitude of said changes. I have begun taking replicated measures of the "Raspberry Riot" donut from the newish Mighty-O Donuts store in Ballard, and while it is too early to make any absolute statements, preliminary results are very encouraging. Donuts consumed to date are more flavorful, lighter and fluffier than those from similar post-modern donut habitats in the Puget Sound ecoregion. While it seems apparent that their donuts spent some time in a fryer, they appear not to have been in there for so long that the spongy, cakey quality has been lost. I'm sure there is some kind of scientific coefficient for this quality; let's call it the "Horton's coefficient," where 0 is over-fried gristly, ghastly organic matter, and 1 is immaculately moist and light and fluffy. I'd say Mighty-O has a Horton's coefficient that is at least a 0.8, perhaps higher. And the frosting actually does taste like berries rather than like "red." My initial assessment of Mighty-O's niche in the donut ecosystem is "do a few things, and do them very well"...they don't have an especially diverse selection of donuts but the ones they do serve are very good and consistent. Moreover, they make vegan donuts, they serve good quality tea, and everything is compostable. The store itself is brightly lit and decorated in a tasteful minimalist Nordic style. This was our reliable coffee and (too many) donuts place during our two years in Ballard. They have more convenient hours, the coffee is quite nice, and the donuts are - we'll just say they've earned the right to use the word in their name. Once upon a time, I convinced myself that I didn't like donuts. I was really telling myself that a good donut is hard to find. Overly greasy donuts are not for me so these suit me just fine. They're a bit dense and filling enough for me to stop at just one, unless I happen to find a few minis lying around. I've been walking by this place almost daily since before it opened. Finally decided to give it a shot. Selection is smaller than many other donuteries I have been to. We got a cocoloco (cinnamon and sugar), raspberry lemonade, and chocolate. The raspberry lemonade was the best, but far from amazing. The other two were average at best. I'm not vegan or vegetarian (and neither should you be), but vegan baked goods seldom work, and I'd wager as far to say that vegan donuts suffer the worst. These were dry and dense. This place is bomb!!! I walked up to the counter naively thinking that only SOME of the donuts in the display would be vegan but to my pleasant surprise, ALL OF THEM ARE!! How nice it is to finally come across a donut shop where you have no limitations! And this place had a ton of specialty donuts too, not just your basic plain cake ones. I'm spoiled. I'm lucky enough to live in a town that has multiple doughnut purveyors on more than one "best doughnuts in America" list. And that's not lip service, these doughnuts are pretty f^cking awesome. I stayed basically across the street from Mighty-O and if I hadn't discovered Morsel, I would've made it there much sooner. When we did stroll in, I was pleasantly surprised that there was no line and there was a good selection of doughnuts available. We got our doughtnuts and settled in at one of the free tables. We decided to get two doughnuts to share, a blueberry fritter and a chocolate peanut. We're big fritter fans and Beiler's in Philly is our blueberry fritter gold standard, and - in my opinion - very tough to beat. The fritter was fine, but blueberries seemed to be represented more in the glaze than the actual fritter. We prefer our fritters teeming with fruit and this fell short. The chocolate peanut was ok; they clearly used high quality chocolate because it didn't taste sugary, just chocolatey. The cake of the doughnut seemed a little dry, but it may be that this doughnut worked better on a yeast base where the doughnut itself and the peanuts wouldn't be competing for all of the moisture in my mouth. I liked Mighty-O, but never craved it or felt compelled to make additional visits to try more of their menu despite its proximity to where I slept. read more

This place is great for working, hanging out, or just for eating donuts and drinking coffee. It's conveniently located near a poke bowl place, so you can stop here right after eating there. I got the French toast donut, and it tasted exactly like its name. It was denser than I was used to, so it would have been nice to eat with a latte. There's a generous coat of powdered sugar, and the bread had a light sweetness to it. It was a little dry, but I'm not sure if it's because I came later in the day. Came here last weekend with the bf as this cafe was just across the street from the Airbnb we were staying at. I got a regular coffee as well as a glazed doughnut, and the bf got an iced latte along with a cinnamon & sugar doughnut. My coffee was really good and it went perfectly with my doughnut, which is more of a cakey texture as opposed to a more yeasty texture that I normally prefer. I got to try a bit of my bf's cinnamon & sugar doughnut, and I did like that more than my glazed doughnut, but I imagine that most of the options from here will be uniformly good. Lots of seating was available at this location as well, so I imagine it would be a good place to do some work at as well. I was in Ballard and saw the new Mighty-O location and had to stop in. The exterior is a gray building with big, white letters that spell out MIGHTY-O and has a garage door entrance. The interior is large and spacious with lots of seating at chairs & tables and counter tops. The doughnuts were great too! I had a hard time ordering and figuring out which doughnuts were which with the obscured labels. I wish the workers would have been a little more helpful with that, or to recommend their favorite since some were specialty doughnuts I had never heard of. We visited after lunch, which was probably not the best time. The selection seemed very limited. Basically only chocolate and plain cake donuts with various icings (chocolate, vanilla, mint, raspberry). Both my husband and I are raised donut fans too. Fortunately, we were prepared not to see a lot of variety in that department because we had checked out Mighty-O online before our visit. Still, there were several items we would have loved to try that had probably been sold out that morning. I'll give them props for their cake donut recipe. Not too sweet, light, and fluffy. Not greasy at all either. Usually cake donuts are all of the above. We ended up buying three chocolate cake donuts with different icings, but they had samples of their plain variety out. I've been coming to this mighty o for a few years (though somewhat infrequently) and this place is always on point. The donuts are so good (you'd hardly even know they're vegan) and the seasonal flavors are always incredible. The staff are kind and quick, and their covid precautions are great. Generally can make it in and out of the store without touching anything except your bag of donuts, don't even have to touch a door. My one complaint is that they tend to run out of glazed twists early in the day but sometimes I get lucky in the afternoons. Anyways this place is great and you all should come try it! read more

Best vegan donuts I've had hands down. It's almost silly that people feel they need to eat "regular" donuts with all of the animal(dairy) products, when there are yummy donut places like these. The yeast based donuts were incredibly similar to the regular donuts you used to get as a kid, but better. If you need to go the Gluten-Free route, I feel like the cake donuts would work out for you-(please don't take my word for it, ask them..but I'm pretty sure). Vegan AND Gluten Free donuts are usually barely risen and quite dry. This place had the best vegan donuts I've tasted. EVER. I highly recommend the Maple Bar..a yummy classic that they perfected! Another great Ballard location that has taken a turn for the worst. As a lover (and aficionado) of donuts, I use to visit their Market Street location 1-2 times a week... until last week when I noticed their store had a bit of a "bug" problem. Around 11am on either a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, when I walked into their shop the place was SWARMING with gnats and flies all over the place. Honestly, I lost count at over twenty of them... and even though I didn't see any of them on the donuts, my mind immediately assumed they were at one point. I couldn't have been more disgusted. What made matters worse was the two employees standing around chatting... neither of them had enough common sense to close the store's front door and lower the garage-style door that's located on the side of the business. They didn't even try "shoo" some of them out of their store, instead they allowed them to just buzz around the entire time as I looked upon the situation in horror. After this incident... Golly I love their donuts... but every single time I come in there, the person behind the counter is outstandingly rude to me!! Whether it's rushing me, saying something condescending to me, or reminding me of my privilege (not really something you want from a barista at 8 AM when you've decided to treat yourself for the week), they never fail to put me in a bad mood or ruin my treat. Today was the last straw when I came in and they couldn't take cash, and when I tried to deflect the situation (I was planning on paying with cash) I said "oh it's cool, everyone has a card nowadays"- and she stopped me there to say, "but those who don't really don't" and glared at me passively. She was not being helpful at all, she stared at me while I decided, and rushed me off the counter to help the one person behind me. Like I said, the service here is always bad. They make an effort to be knowledgeable, but it usually turns into a snarky conversation about how I know nothing about good coffee and they seem bothered that they have to explain what "a macchiato made the right way" is to me. I was going to get coffee and a donut, sit down and study, and enjoy my morning but it's clear to me that I'm never going back here.
