Food was yummy but the service was kinda rude and very slow. We asked for spicy food (we LOVE all things spicy...even with ghost peppers and habaneros) and the food literally had red crushed peppers cooked in hot oil and thrown in, no thought put behind the dish. When you think of spicy, you think of some balanced flavors and ability to handle the spices. This was too much to handle, that you couldn't even taste anything else!! It was ridiculous. On top of that, when we told them it was way too spicy, the waitress gave us so much sass about us ordering it if we couldn't handle it (we really believed we'd be okay with spicy there!!). It ruined the whole vibe. Also the martini was way too strong, tasted like straight up vodka...no lychee flavor at all. When you take out the spice, the regular flavors of the dishes were really nice and delicious. The sushi was pretty good. Bathrooms weren't very good. We enjoyed all the food and the service was quick and food was hot and fresh. The wings we're fried perfectly with that nice crispiness and the egg rolls were perfect with just a touch of oiliness that I love. The rice head a nice taste you really didn't need to add soy sauce for taste. And everything else was gold as well. I had a Stella Artois beer that was served in a chilled glass really hit the spot. Its a meal all in one - my only request is to have cut some of the ingredients smaller. The Teriyaki shrimp is cooked with pepper and the teriyaki sauce is on the side. It comes with white rice onions and peppers cooked and pepper and broccoli with carrots cooked plain. After eating this entree all I taste is pepper vs teriyaki. Had this twice and cooked the same . My husband and I both enjoyed our lunches and left satiated and satisfied. A young vegetarian friend of ours who lives in town goes to Mikado often had suggested it. The service was efficient. I've heard good things about Mikado but hadn't tried it until just this past week. There aren't too many options on a Monday night off-season in Vineyard Haven so we were happy to find that Mikado does a great job with their sushi. I didn't take pictures as their take-out plating isn't show-stopping but I will say I liked the containers they use. We ordered the Shrimp Shumai and Pork Gyoza appetizers. While my dinner companion didn't care for the Shumai much, I thought both were good. The sushi rolls we ordered were the Spicy Tuna (chopped tuna mixed with tempura flakes, tobiko, scallions, and spicy mayo $9), Spicy Shrimp (chopped steamed ginger shrimp w/ tempura flakes, tobiko, scallions, and spicy mayo $9), Alaska (salmon, avocado and cucumber $9), and Golden (shrimp tempura & avocado, w/ sliced mango on top and mango sauce $18). The Spicy Tuna was different than most as they do chop it all up so it's more of a mash; it didn't taste any less flavorful but it is a different-looking presentation and taste experience. The Spicy Shrimp sounded interesting since it's steamed shrimp with ginger. I expected a bigger ginger flavor but was able to add a bit of marinated ginger to give it that extra kick I was hoping for. The Alaska roll was good...nothing special but it didn't fall short of my expectation. The Golden roll is something we always look for on a menu: a roll with mango. This one did not disappoint. The shrimp tempura was spot on and the was mango ripe and fresh. If I had to come up with something negative to say about this roll would be that it's a bit slippery with the mango making it a bit hard/messy to eat. That's hardly a shortcoming though! If you read through other reviews, you'll some weren't happy with their meal or their experience. So we made a deliberate trip from OB to VH this year just to eat at Mikado and the tuna pizza was every bit as good as I remembered. We also got the Tiger Roll and ... all I can say is, my husband has consistently said that no roll is worth more than $12 ... until we left Mikado and he shocked me by saying, "that roll was worth the $20, it's the best roll I've EVER had." While I'm not real fond of paying $20 for one roll, I understand the upcharge necessary for restaurants on the island and still have to concur with hubs that that was, likewise, the single best roll I've ever had. I stopped in here for lunch for two while visiting the island for the day. They are doing dine in the restaurant during the lunch hours and also take out if you choose. The inside was very nice looking and the waiter was also quick to help us and take our order. We got a sashimi appetizer as well as one specialty roll which were both very fresh tasting and well made. My only criticism is that the food was quite expensive in my opinion. I understand that we were on the island and everything would probably be more, also including touristy areas, but $17 for the specialty roll seemed a bit ridiculous. Again, it was very tasty so I can't complain about that. I'd recommend a visit in, but keep in mind it'll be expensive. read more

Mikado, having been open for just over six months as of this writing, is settling in well to the fabric of downtown VH and the island on the whole. I particularly enjoy their steamed dishes, and always get a kick out of the fact that they are listed at the very back of the menu under the title "Something for Dieters." The diversity of their menu is worth noting, with a truly eclectic mix of Asian dishes and nice emphasis on diversity ... not only Pad Thai and Udon in noodles, but similar contrasts in the main entree section. A modest selection of beer and wine is available, but remember that this is Tisbury and you have to order something to consume with your drink. :) Decor of the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing with an emphasis on cool tones. I'd like to see Mikado acknowledge the island setting a bit more, with something like a wider variety of fresh fish dishes; perhaps that will happen as time goes on. read more

Then I gout the mandarin lobster ginger and scallion. Delicious but messy as you end up having to eat it with a fork.
