I've been eating food from Mike's since the beginning of 2007. I've always gotten delivery or takeout from them. They are a Gloucester institution. Even though I do not actually live in Gloucester myself, everyone I know who does (including my girlfriend) gets Mike's. Here, from my own experience, is why they kick ass: 1) They offer a huge variety of subs that are very filling. My girlfriend always gets the small cheese-steak sub and she really enjoys it. It's a very good portion for that size. I myself have gotten the large barbecue steak tip and the large eggplant parmesan. Each one was very tasty, very delicious and filling, although for a large I would have expected a bit more. Then again, I like to pig out, so maybe I'm not one to make sound judgement here. 2) They offer all different types of pizza and it is here I can make excellent judgement as pizza is my favorite food hands down. They have a huge party size pizza that is basically a square sheet of 24 slices great for parties or large groups. It is just awesome and every single one I have sampled has been delicious and left me craving more. There are various specialty pizzas you can get from Mike's and I must admit I have not tried many, but the one I have eaten the most is the barbecue chicken. Strange, on their regular pizzas it's not that great, but on their sheet pizza is where it shines. Overall, there really isn't any barbecue sauce and the chicken has only a grilled taste, so the "barbecue" moniker doesn't really apply. I am also a big believer in the plain cheese pizza being a true test of a pizza joint's pizza making ability, and here Mike's cheese is on par, but nothing special. Where they do excel, albeit tremendously, is their sweet sauce pizza, known as the Gloucester Favorite. Personally, I'm a huge sweet sauce fan, but adding in the fact that you can get a large cheese Gloucester Favorite starting at $6 and change just makes it the best valued pizza I have ever had. It is fantastic. Get it with pepperoni and BAM!, you're in heaven. 3) Their calzones are ridiculous. You get a small and you will have leftovers. Even I can't finish one and I would never attempt to. It's served almost like Chicago-style deep-dish pizza with out any sauce, or maybe more accurately like a dessert pie with a layer of melted cheese on top. You get a side of marinara sauce for dipping. They offer different sizes, which get much bigger and pricier, but the overall eating experience is pure joy. I have tried many calzones on the North Shore and Mike's has the best. 4) They offer tons of appetizers. I have only tried the mozzarella sticks and I get them all the time with their salty, gooey goodness. My girlfriend has gotten their fries on many occasions and they can be very good, other times disappointing as if they're using a totally different type of fry. 5) They have lots of pasta dishes, but I've only had two of them: the chicken broccoli alfredo (amazing) and the chicken parmesan (blah). Now, where Mike's really impresses is the pasta special they offer Mondays through Wednesdays. For only $4 and change, you get a huge portion of either the chicken broccoli or chicken parmesan with a side of garlic bread. You will have leftovers. With takeout or delivery the meal is served in a nice plastic container with a snap-on cover. Just wash it out after you're done eating all the food and you have yourself a perfect container for future leftovers. So, a few weaknesses, but the strengths far outweigh them. Don't hesitate; order Mike's the next time you want takeout comfort food in Gloucester. I've even convinced my good friend in Beverly to get takeout from them and that's a 40-minute drive round trip. read more

Mike's Place isn't bad but isn't great either. I mean it's sad because they have really good food and huge portion sizes but there's a few things keeping it from being great. I'm giving them 3 stars because the food is mostly awesome and that's the most important thing and there isn't too many really good places to eat here in Gloucester. Lately I've been ordering the Steak Tip dinner. It's a bit pricey but they give you a very generous portion of steak tips and fries. The dinner also comes with a side salad and pita bread. My wife and I can usually share a steak tip dinner if we aren't too hungry so if it's just you and your girlfriend I recommend sharing unless you want some leftovers for the next day. Their pizza isn't bad. I'm very picky when it comes to pizza though so I wouldn't say it's that good either. You get what you pay for. Unlike other menu items their pizza is pretty cheap. On Tuesdays you can buy a small pizza for $2.95 and it's a decent sized pizza. They also have beat the clock on Mondays and other days the price is still very reasonable. There's nothing wrong with the pizza, I just think it's mediocre. Pretty much everything I've had at Mike's has been good aside from the Chicken Parm but what do you expect getting Chicken Parm from a place like Mike's? The prices at Mike's are pretty steep and that's a drawback like I said the portions are very generous so that makes up for it if you're really hungry or want to share a meal. One thing that turned me off was I was going to purchase a small can of soda with my pizza and they told me it was like $1.85. I can buy a 2-liter bottle of soda for that price! The customer service isn't so great. For one thing when you call in half the time I can't even understand the guy on the other end of the phone. Also, the employees at the front counter aren't too friendly. I've walked in and 4 or 5 employees are just standing up front staring at me but nobody offered to help me. The employees aren't exactly rude but don't expect anything more than a courtesy grunt, I don't think I've ever seen anyone smile there. There also isn't a lot of room to stand while waiting for your order. It's kind of an awkward setup. There are some tables to dine in but I almost always order my food to go. Overall you can do a lot worse than Mike's. You'll probably be pretty satisfied with your meal. It's typical diner type food. Probably one of the better places to order take-out in Gloucester. read more

This is the best take-out/deli-style place on the North Shore. Hands down!! I LOVE the Grecian pizza. You must try it! It is the best, gooey goodness ever. It is a white pizza with alfredo sauce, feta cheese, spinach, onions (the good kind, sliced thin), tomatoes, and olives (if you like olives, which I don't). This place is a HOT spot for subs and pizza. I've been in here three times in the last month, and every time the phone is ringing off the hook. They have two people answering phones. It's crazy busy. In fact, it's often difficult to place a dinner order as the line is busy on repeated attempts. Anyhow -- the food is excellent. Greek stuff, steak tips, salads, italian subs, pizza, the works. Everything I've had is fresh, huge, and delicious. Not a single complaint about the food. Mike's has a huge menu with pretty much every item you could want from a "pizza joint" and they are fast. I recommend takeout as the ordering counter is so busy that it's difficult to have a quiet meal at this place. Delivery is also exactly what they promise (45 minutes to Rockport, which is, believe it or not, better than most places). The delivery guy has been on time every single time. This place gives Destino's a run for their money ... but Destino's is still my personal favorite as they've been around 50+ years and make the best chicken parm known to man. read more

This place is great! And to say that about any sub shop in the Gloucester area is pretty tough to do. The pizza is huge and spiced perfectly! They always have awesome combo deals, usually on the weekends, and the staff is amazing! I don't live in the area anymore but we make special trips as we are passing through to stop here. Besides the pizza you gotta try the BLT and any other the other amazing, and quite large subs. They have a small parking lot shared with a small grocer but it's worth the tiny bit of hassle. read more

I was optimistic........first time trying Mikes place AFTER having new owners even though the exchange of hands happened many years ago! Luckily I wasn't totally let down, all the meat was great! However, they offer mashed potatoes with gravy as a side......... my daughters and I ordered 2 servings with extra gravy. What I got was gravy ONLY on top of potatoes (not mashed) with none on the side even though I offered to PAY for extra. Also......I clearly ordered MASHED POTATOES......NOT baked potato chopped up with gravy pored on top!! I would have ordered baked if that's what I wanted.......but Mike's Place didn't care. They assumed I wouldn't be able to tell the difference even though it's OBVIOUS if mashed taters happens to be your choice of sides!! Lol. Do NOT order from this place. Our order took over an hour to get here and 3 out of the 4 meals were wrong/disgusting. Asked for no mayo and white bread- the sandwich was saturated with mayo on wheat bread. Asked for no tomatoes on an Italian sub due to a minor allergy- sub had tomatoes. The chicken Caesar wrap didn't have much dressing and also had a nice long hair in the middle! Called to complain to see if they could refund it and the girl had a major attitude and would not give a refund, only a new order. Why would we want to wait another hour for food that was DISGUSTING. Towards the end of my time in Gloucester I stopped by Mike's a few times and it made me wish I'd discovered them earlier. They have a huge menu, but what I really like there is their gyro, a sandwich not offered by many other sub shops on the N. Shore. Mike's is a commendable rendition of it, and I'll miss it now that I'm gone. You can also get a very large cheeseburger with the works for $4.01, a great value, in my estimation. Unfortunately, they have glommed onto the lamentable trend in takeout of only selling fries in huge portions for a price that almost equals your sandwich. No wonder this nation is so damned chunky..... The only Mike's miss for me was a lamb kabab that was too dry, a common problem that volume takeout places have with their kababs. My bf and I are major calzone lovers. Every time we travel we always try new pizza places. We actually found this place by accident, and went here as a last ditch effort. To our amazement they had calzones. We have tried multiple places since then, and NOTHING beats theirs. The best calzone we've ever had. And the portion sizes are huge. We have only ordered to go and takeout... sounds like they are horrible at delivery so just don't do that option? Its a typical hole in the wall diner, so don't expect 5 star service people. Ordered delivery last night with the family. We had ordered here before and found it to be just average but last night was disgusting. We ordered the chicken Parma with ziti for my dad and it was so gross. First of all there was no "parm" and the chicken looked like it had been reheated a bunch of times. I thought he got veal by accident but my mom tried it and said it was definitely chicken. The sauce was super watery and sweet - gross. I ordered the eggplant parm sub and I could only eat a little. Where do I even begin? My family And I ordered a pizza, onions rings and a wrap. We asked for delivery. Normally if places are backed up they make you aware. Nope. We waited over an hour and a half. We called numerous times just to be given the runaround, sarcastic remarks with no direct answer. We looked on the GPS and it was only 8 mins from our location. We got into our car and drove to pick up the food we ordered almost 2 hours ago. We walked in and weren't even greeted by 3 young "women" who knew exactly who we were, laughed in our face. We asked to speak to the manager which one of the little girls said they were. No managerial etiquette at all. If I could rate 0 stars I would. Damn, Were we disappointed. Went there on a quiet Monday night. Split a Cheeseburger dinner plate. The employee couldn't understand that we wanted to pay extra for a larger salad-no biggie, we rolled with it and kept our money. Got home. A whole styrofoam clamshell of those pre-seasoned fries like you get at the grocery store-too salty, not fresh fries- and cold. No biggie, I'll eat fries off the floor. Salad: typical pizza joint salad. Iceburg lettuce, an olive, a slice of cucumber, one cherry tomato. was good though. The Cheese Burger: *sigh* Opened the wrapper (a la Mcdonalds, wrapped in paper) and found 2 badly cooked , almost burned, burgers on a grease soaked bun. They were black. Getting a visual? Now see this: nothing. No lettuce. No tomato. No condiments. Nothing. Two dry overcooked patties on a greasy roll-did I say that already?. Tuesday night around 7:30, I was put on hold as soon as they answered the phone, after a minute or so I placed my 1 large pepperoni and 1 large cheese pizza order. I was then told it would be 45 min - 1 hour for delivery.... a bit long for a Tuesday night..... any who Pizza was delivered closer to the 1 hour time frame, upon opening the pizza boxes I thought we had gotten 2 cheese pizza's...... I had to look carefully for the pepperoni, no exaggeration!!!! I think there may have been a total of 8 slices of pepperoni no more then 10! So yet again, this place was a huge disappointment. I ordered pizza for pickup around 4:25 and asked that it be ready for 5 o'clock. Two large pizzas. They said "no problem" when i told them my husband's name and said he would be by to get it. Well, he showed up- no pizzas ready (in fact, no memory of our order), and the place was a disorganized madhouse. The best explanation they could give him was another person with the same name placed a similar order and they thought our order was a duplicate. I HATE this place like I cannot even tell you!!! We have given this place more than one chance and they are just horrible. Sad because there are not a lot of delivery places in Gloucester! We ended up there after a terrible Valentine's day once where our basement was flooding. We ordered a cheesesteak calzone and paid for it. They handed us a Chicken Kabob calzone. i have gone here more times than i'd ever be able to recount. i always loved whatever i got. everyone goes here for the chicken kabob salads and subs, at which they do excel... in gloucester. cape ann pizza and subs in essex wins this competition, but mike's IS the gloucester winner. great steak tip subs. decent cheese steak. the pizza is good for sub shop pizza, but don't expect anything more than that. as in, this place is more for subs than pizza. sometimes there are pizza places with subs. this is a sub shop with pizza. am i totally talking out of my ass here? probably. the cold subs are all pretty good. the calzones are good if you order something easy. awesome chicken fingers and other sides. here's where i start talking shit, though. the last handful or ten of times we ordered from mike's, there was always some form of mistake from our order; something was missing, something had extra shit we didn't want, etc. enter the worst time ever. the only time we ordered a calzone, they literally screwed it up THREE TIMES. we asked for a calzone that came with onions, without the onions. this apparently meant that we wanted all onions with perhaps a sprinkling or two of the other ingredients. we brought it back and they "fixed it." we checked it before we left. it wasn't even remotely the same calzone we ordered. they fix it. the calzone comes home. it's not even the right calzone, AGAIN. it doesn't have onions so we friggin eat it. what the hell ever. p.s. we still had to pay for the calzone. fuck. then, oh THEN. this is about the last time i went in there. i got off the train (which is across the street and down a little bit) and i knew i'd be fending for myself for dinner. i was STARVING so i went to mike's because the place directly across the street from the train station, the gloucester depot, wasn't open yet. i ordered a chicken kabob salad because i was feeling nostalgic. i ordered, sat down, and literally 30 seconds later (no joke, this was a legit 30 seconds. i hadn't even finished writing a text) they called my name because my order was done. i brought it home and ate the mf-er, disregarding the fact that it takes more than a minute to cook fresh chicken. well well well, my friends, let me just tell YOU that i spent a bounty of quality time with my bathroom that night. i actually almost didn't go to work the next day, but suffered through with a severely weak stomach. i don't know if this has anything to do with the fact that my order seemed to not be prepared fresh for me, but my spidey sense leads me to believe my chicken was tainted, at best. it tasted fine. i wouldn't have eaten it otherwise. so that's that. mike's is a gloucester institution and for so long it was so good. maybe it's all been a case of bad luck, but how have there been 5-10 bad luck experiences in a row? i don't live in gloucester anymore, though, so it's not like it's this terrible burden on my life to have to eliminate a gloucester sub shop from a list of approximately 72. read more

Either a greasy hit or a miserable miss. If you are touring, this place will make you feel uneasy. Everyone is very laid back and lazy. So, I ordered a medium rare burger with lettuce. 40 minutes later a greasy styrofoam box arrived. The contents included some crinkle cut fries and a burger dripping with oil. The burger was... very very well done. Hockey puck style. The fries were surprisingly good. But the prices aren't too bad. read more

This place is as close to a college dining hall as you can get. It feels like an industrial food factory and everything you get has a mild taste of hamburgers. We tried hot subs and they were simply hot things on bland buns. One of us had a cheesburger sub and it was a greasy mess. The cheese steak with a bit better but lacking any steak flavor. They used to have a bit of character in years past but I think that ownership changed hands and the new team punches in, grills and punches out. read more
