I've been ordering from Mike's for 4-6 years now... what's going on? I have no issue whatsoever with the practice, but why do I have to figure this out for myself, after repeated specific inquires? For the record, Supreme's, down the street (another local institution specializing in roast beef and pastrami sandwiches), is doing the same thing ("Well, I'm closing tonight at 10, but I will be open tomorrow until 12am"; "Okay, but what are your hours? For the 3rd order in a row I got something slightly different than I ordered and part of the order was so squished it was inedible. MIKES PLACE IN GLOUCESTER IS HORRIBLE ! I just got served the WORST Burger that I have ever taken a bite of. I ordered it Med Rare and it came out like a hockey puck. The bun was so soggy that my fingers went right through it and couldn't stay together. The bacon was so rubbery that when i took the first bite the whole burger slide out from the soggy bun. Now onto the fries. Cold Cold Cold and also Rubbery. WTF I was so hungry and they ruined my night. OH YEAH this was after waiting 45 min for delivery. I used to order food here and it was good. I recently ordered 2 different types of pizza and a Mexican bowl. THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE! The bowl was not good, but the pizzas were inedible. The family members that ate pizza felt sick. When usually we can eat 2 pizzas no problem, after a slice, no one wanted a second one. The next day I took the remaining pizza out of the fridge and decided it would be best just to toss it. The pizza had a thick layer of hardened white fat on top...and no, it wasn't the cheese. I placed an order for delivery. I was rushed on the phone and forgot I had to specify sweet sauce. I called back within 2 minutes, literally and I basically had to threaten to cancel my order to get sweet sauce. I specified which door at my house to go to and specifically NOT to go to the other door, guess which door they arrived at.. the one I said not to. My bill came to 16.47 including a 3$ delivery charge. I hand the guy a $20.00 and he just takes off, didn't bother to ask if I wanted change. I was giving the $20.00 anyway, but for it to be assumed that was his tip was just rude. Very disappointing experience. We ordered 2 party pizzas IN PERSON mind you- for a retirement party. They completely butchered one of the pizzas. The order consisted of one half Hawaiian (ham and pineapple) and the other half mushroom, onions, peppers, pepperoni, and sausage. We received one party pizza half onions and mushrooms, and half peppers. This retirement party was taking place at lunchtime so everyone had a very limited amount of time to eat and enjoy. Upon calling the store the manager was EXTREMELY rude and difficult to work with. She said that in order to send a replacement out that she would need the pizza back- but its lunchtime in an office and people want to eat. We asked if she would like a picture because apparently she did not believe that they messed up the pizza. After enough back and forth she didn't even offer to refund the cost of the pizza and settled for a petty 15$ dollars. We frequent this place a lot, and we certainly will no longer order from here. Nor will our office. It was a 60 yr retirement party and they completely messed it up and did not care. Mikes Place is the perfect late night, drunk, or hangover fast food. With a huge menu, delivery, and cheap prices (you get what you pay for) it can really hit the spot sometimes. They have weekly deals on pizza and pasta dishes. They don't have a public restroom. read more

Incredibly disappointing. I ordered two small pizzas and an order of mozzarella sticks and when my boyfriend went to pick up the food, they had forgotten to make one of the pizzas. He finally gets back, the food is cold (keep in mind I live within walking distance) and the pizzas weren't even cooked all the way. Completely doughy and soggy. The pizza practically fell apart when taking the first slice out of the box, which is weird cause it wasn't even hot and properly cooked. We are new in the area, and we had the occasion to eat at Mike's a couple of times, both inside the restaurant and take out. The food is basically good, but not sure the chicken is always fresh. He has a vast menu including pizza. We ordered pizza twice so far and found it to be very good. Light crust, not burned, the sauce is tasty and good amount of cheese and other toppings. All in all good pizza. Salads are good as well. Roast Beef sandwiches are also good and full of roast beef. Generous with their onion rings and fries. Their Parmesan dishes are not good. They do not put any cheese on top of the chicken, eggplant, veal, etc. Most restaurant put mozzarella cheese on top of the dinner, or at least some "Parmesan" cheese. When we opened our take-out boxes, there was only pasta sauce on the chicken and eggplant. No cheese whatsoever. The chicken was not a breaded bake breast, but small pieces of breaded, chunked chicken deep fried and sauce put on top, and no cheese. The pasta was underneath. When we called to ask why there was no mozzarella, and no parmesan, a woman who said she was the manager, Shelly, told us in so many words, too bad, "that is how we make it". She made no attempt to try and diffuse our concern and to give curtious customer service. When we said, why don't you at least put some parmesan sprinkled on top as parmesan means cheese, she rudely hung-up on us. Hanging-up on customers like that is not only bad manners, but bad for business. Others staff behaves for the most part, politely. I wonder if the owner knows his manager argues with customers, and rudely hangs-up on people when they have a legitimate complaint. My fave there are the of course their famous roast beef's and my other fave is their Italian subs .... made the old school way.... with chopped pickles, shredded lettuce SO SO SO good... ..I have heard their hot dogs are wicked awesome too. I used to really like this place. We eat here once a week but probably not after tonight though. We usually do pick-up service. Maybe we need to get it delivered and have the delivery guy wait til we open our sandwiches and see if we got the right food... Our past 4 orders went like this: 1. - Egg salad sub was full of shells. I threw it away. 2. Ordered 2 roast beef 3-ways. Hubby got correct order, mine wasn't even close. Took it back and waited for a new sandwich. 3. Ordered steak subs and they were correct. 4. Ordered 3 subs, 2 of which were missing the cheese and mine had old, foul-tasting and foul-smelling roast beef. In the trash. It seems that I'm spending a lot of my hard-earned money on this crap and I keep throwing entire sandwiches away and end up with no dinner and no money. Not the greatest takeout in the city, but certainly not the worst. But it is certainly one of the more infamous restaurants in the city. The food is decent, while some dishes stick out more than others. Pasta and chicken dishes in particular are very well done. Pasta due to a extremely awesome home made sauce and hand made meatballs. None of that frozen stuff, actual home made and hand rolled meatballs. Great stuff. Chicken dishes are amazing as well, especially chicken parm dishes which give you the best of both worlds as they use their awesome meat sauce giving you a bold blend of flavors. Great stuff. The pizza is above average, but some should be eaten at your own risk. A meat combo from here filled me in two slices and was extremely greasy, the overall food quality was good but not exactly friendly to the rest of you. The staff is friendly but clearly trying to get a lot of orders out at once so don't expect personalized and upbeat service, but you do get efficient service. Though many reviews on here do heavily criticize their delivery and I have to say that poor delivery is the norm, some worse than others obviously. The cost is pretty fair but shopping around their deals for pasta and pizza can end up getting you a very affordable and tasty dinner. read more

I feel like every time I eat here it's under new ownership, so I always hope for the best. If there is one thing I crave from Mike's it's the Honey BBQ Steak Tips. My order for this particular delivery was a Honey BBQ Steak Tip Dinner (Steak Fries only) and an order of Cheesy Garlic Stix. The steak tips themselves were great as anticipated. Ordered medium-rare and were cooked perfectly to my liking. Generous portion of about 5 to 6 good size tips. Props to Mike's for putting them in tin foil to make sure they stay hot, travel well and the juices stay with the meat. Steak fries included in the dinner were the real let down here. Soggy, slightly-under cooked. I ate just a few and tossed the rest. I guess I could have asked for "crispy fries," but I feel like that is implied? The cheesy garlic stix was the size of a small pizza and came in a pizza box. Pizza dough was crispy and golden, but the heavy coating of garlic spread and melting cheese made for a few soggy spots towards the middle. Overall I would say average. Not sure I would order this again. The total bill for this meal after tip to my delivery driver was roughly $28. Price point here definitely did not reflect my experience. If I decide to eat here again, I would get only a Honey BBQ Steak Tip sub. With that said I would probably think about all the other great food options in town and decide to go with them because I could get higher quality food at a reduced price. I've had several terrible experiences with Mike's Place, and I'm not sure why I've continued to support this horrendous excuse of a business. Often when you call, they'll pick up the phone and then hang-up on you. If you manage to get ahold of anyone at the restaurant (on the phone or in person), you're are met with piss-poor attitudes, ignorance, and a blatant lack of courtesy. The staff has clearly not been trained in food service etiquette. I've had food delivered to my household coated in melted styrofoam. Subs come partially flattened, and stale. Pizza has arrived with flies imbedded in the cheese, and drinks are routinely forgotten. As you may have gathered, I've given this company more than it's fair chance at redemption. If you have visited or lived in Gloucester, you've probably found yourself with a rather restricted list of options for fast food delivery. This fact gives Mike's Place an unfortunate near-monopoly over the people of this city and its frequent visitors. Gloucester deserves better than this. read more

I swung in just because I was hoping for something quick for take out. I wasn't expecting a 4 star meal but just something quick. Do not get delivery, I just waited 1 hour and 20 minutes when they told me 30 to 45 minutes. It came ice cold and soggy. No apologies, just excuses. If I could give no stars I would but you have to in order to write a review.... figures..... I live less then 10 minutes from the restaurant. I have got delivery 3 times and each time it has came well over 30 to 40 minutes late. There are much better options for delivery. Oh man where do I start with this place? I've been a recent customer (past 3 months), and to sum up mikes place, their all about quantity and speed not quality. They're fast, have a menu which is wayyyyyyy too big and staff that are far too busy. Whoever owns this place thinks that expanding their menu would solve all their problems. Wrong. Mikes needs to focus on the basics before you expand the menu, pizza is decent, specials are good deals but making the menu 7 pages long is where this place falls short. The roast beef is good, and the girls behind the counter are sweet and efficient. The onion rings are horrible, clumps full of flour and not thick enough. Think beer batter. Chicken parm sub was chewy scraps of chicken, maybe consider thick piece of breast meat? House dressing is just appalling, a dressing should be one third vinegar and two thirds oil and some sugar, not just Sysco brand dressing with a couple of your own spices mixed in. Decent place but they need to dumb down the menu and focus on the simple things. Pasta calzone? 100 different wraps? How about just offer your subs as a wrap instead of installing SEVEN tv screens to display a bunch of dishes people never get? Who runs this place? Been giving the benefit of a doubt for years.. Last straw today. Although the person who barely speaks/understands English repeated my order correctly was indeed not correct upon pick up. When I called for a manager I was asked to hold and then the same person came back telling me that unless I wanted to bring the wrong order back for them to fix that they wouldn't rectify their error. Which I could not due because I had picked up my order and then left town. Even with that information they provided me with no solution. Despite ordering there multiple times a week because it is new my home; I will never order nor suggest anyone order from there ever again. We are regular customers but are seriously thinking of changing our once a week takeout place. We get a pasta dish and you never know from one week to the next if the chicken will be tender or tough but what kills it is what is with the stale, awful bread that they serve with it. How hard is it for a sub place to serve fresh bread with the pasta. At least with the pasta there is a chance that it will be ok but the bread has never been ok. I ordered a large Italian sub with everything on it yesterday and going into my third bite I thought a chipped my tooth with the rock that was inside the sandwich. It's unbelievable how a rock that size got into my sandwich and I almost broke a tooth.. I called but they didn't seem to concerned about the situation.
