Talk about busy!!! I have tried to get into this restaurant for a couple of weeks and their parking has been full every time. Today I was able to park and upon coming into the hostess area I was greeted with a friendly face and was told there would be a small wait. Only had to wait about 10 minutes. Once seated my waiter Doug was amazing. He took my drink order and kept my tea full. We love Mike's, but don't frequent it often as it's very rich for us (food-wise and cost). We use it for a special treat or for celebrations. While we love the diversity of international food in Northern Virginia, sometimes we want fancy American food. Mike's is the ticket. The atmosphere in Mike's is one of the coolest out of all the Great American Restaurants. It feels like a multi-story converted factory. There's a glass elevator that our son loves riding, a lovely staircase, intimate-yet-buzzing atmosphere, and great food. It's pricey, but having recently spent more than we planned on a meal at Austin Grill, we looked at each other and said, "If we'd known this dinner was going to cost this much, we should have gone to Mike's." Don't leave without getting the white chocolate bread pudding. It's enough to share, but you won't want to. (The only downside to Mike's is their parking, so just be prepared to walk from the lot across the street. Cross carefully!) read more

Ask for a refill when they drop them off at the table. Don't try without the butter. Will change your life. Starters: Firecracker shrimp really good, but really sweet (fine by me) Entrees: Drunken Ribeye, great taste and texture for the price. Maybe a little too salty? Prime rib: tasted better to me, perfectly cooked, both steaks we're most. We've been to Mike's multiple times but tonight was the first time eating here on New year's day. We called ahead to make reservations for a party of 9 (7 adults and 2 babies) and when we arrived approximately 15 min ahead we were seated within 10 min. I was really surprised with the service. Our waiter took great care of us and all our orders came out fairly quickly, particularly the appetizers and the kids meal. Even when we had an issue with the Mac n cheese for our 2yr old (i.e. very peppery taste), they were able to give us something else to replace our order... Chicken tenders. This place is handicapped accessible. There is a ramp from the handicapped parking spaces to the front door. And although there are 3 levels, there is a functioning elevator. And BONUS...there are changing tables in both the men's and women's restrooms!! Not to mention the cleanliness of these restrooms Overall, great experience! The food is not bad, it's just expensive. It was also very loud and stimulating. The workers were wearing masks but there is not social distancing or a mask policy in place for customers. The loudness was usually constant and very stimulating. Oh, also, we reserved a table for 4pm but the table wasn't ready until 4:11pm. Also, there were no kids magazines or crayons that were provided for my 3 year old cousin as we waited. The loud environment was uncomfortable at best to wait in, and exhausting at worst to wait for the food. I would go back, just not more than once a year. Overall, good quality steaks and drinks. We got the famous drunken rib eye and the prime rib. Very well-seasoned and the steak was juicy perfectly cooked. We also ordered couple of appetizers but were not as happy with them, especially the fried oyster. I thought it would be fried oyster platter but it was more of a salad with four sad fried oysters as topping. For a price of $16, I don't think it was worth it. Also deduct one star as the place was pricy than most steakhouse we've been too ($50 and $52 for each steak plate). We went to Mike's twice in one week. The decor is wonderful. There is a definite difference between the upstairs and main floor. The first visit was upstairs and we were able to visit easily with the couple we were with. The second visit was downstairs and it was so noisy that visiting was nearly impossible. That made our time much less enjoyable. Food was wonderful both nights; everyone enjoyed what they ordered and there was a variety. The service the first night was excellent; the second night, it was less than stellar. I think I would've given 5 stars if we had only been there the first night. Another great meal at Mike's. We dined in the bar area this time to watch sports. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Food was good...drinks were great...I tried a couple signature cocktails and my husband tried local brews. I ordered the pecan crusted trout, which was pretty good. I still think the steak I ordered on a previous visit was better, but the trout was pretty decent. In stark contrast to its laid back sister restaurants (think Carlyle, Sweet Water Tavern, Coastal Flats), Mike's American Grill is one great big ball of energy. It starts on the parking lot as you fiercely compete for one of those narrow spaces. For people like me who don't enjoy that kind of competition, we risk life and limb parking across the street by the strip mall the walking across. Once inside, you'll see people bustling around and those fortunate enough to get a seat at the bar enjoying very familiar digs. With all that said, I love Mike's. They know how to celebrate Americana through cuisine and decor. A place where friendly faces & great food are abundant. I also love the way it looks inside especially around Christmas, the lively atmosphere, and stellar service despite the crowds. I order the grilled short smoked salmon filet, jumbo lump crab cakes and chopped house salad more than I would like to admit, but everything is good. The food is always well prepared and satisfying, so you can't go wrong. If you eat beef and pork, your options drastically increase. Recently, I've heard cries to open a second location. I'm throwing my support behind that initiative, although I suspect it will stay just as crowded as the original location. Tip #1: Reservations are tricky dependent upon what day of the week it is and the number of people in your party... I normally just drop in and hope for the best. Tip #2: The noise level is above average here. So if you're planning to have a deep conversation with a soft talker, this may not be the spot for you. read more
