I went to Maine after deep sorrow as an attempt to move on after the 2 year anniversary of my mom's death as my antagonistic aunt was coming down for a visit with my brother (the only family I have left). This was my first stop upon arriving in Wells this past Friday afternoon. I am not too familiar with traveling and eating out. I had trouble finding parking and was told it would be a 40 minute wait for a table and was given a device that was to blink and vibrate when a table was available. I was told if I could find a table at the bar, I could seat myself. I paced around and around and there was a table and I confirmed that I could sit there with a waiter, (he did ask "are you all alone? nothing the matter with that", which could have been handled with more tact by saying "table for one?") and sat down. Before long, a woman arrived and said she and a waitress in training would be assisting me tonight. They did their job about as well as possible, but left me wondering whether they were that genuinely nice and polite or whether they were putting it on because they felt sorry for me. At any rate they were nice and the service was great, and they kept asking if I needed anything and were very helpful, so what more could you ask for?
Then an old guy came and asked if he could have the table when I was done and I said yes and he said he would be leaning against the post. Then some other family of and 1 or 2 middle aged and 2 older people asked if I wanted company. And without thinking, I said yes and then remembered the older guy resting against the post. I felt horrible but it was a done deal, what could I do? I admit I felt a little more "cool" and thought that would help me with a beautiful blond girl at a table across from me. But she barely noticed me and when she did, the expression on her face seemed to be of depression or disgust, not sure which. At any rate, I profoundly apologize to that old guy, even though he paced around with a disgusted look for a long time and made me feel very bad and may have put a bad word into the "band" (one corny guy with a guitar whose singing skill had much to be desired). I had a half and half combo of haddock and clams, 21.95 I believe. It was excellent. The clams were so plentiful and after a while seemed to have a mucky or muddy taste, but maybe that is normal for whole clams, I don't really know. At any rate, they treated me like royalty and the food was great, and they talked me into a sundae which surprisingly enough for a lactose-intolerant dude eased the over-consumption of fried foods. Finally the old guy disappeared and either left in disgust or got seated and the people at my table talked a little after mostly ignoring me, and the guitar guy made some wise crack about the guy so red he was giving off heat or something, the guy who shafted someone a table or something to that effect and I thought he had potential or something to that effect. I hope I was imagining things, but then again I do not put a lot of stock into what one guy with a guitar thinks or says. I was stuck on 495 for some time before arriving here, stuck in heat and smoke I think and felt quite sunburnt from the sun beating down on me in the standstill traffic. I thought he might be referring to me, and the daydream of knocking him on his lame *ss occurred to me, I sat and ignored trivial distractions, enjoyed the more enjoyable ones, and had a great time and great meal. I would come here again!
edit: IN reference to the previous poster, I did not have a clue what "shack potatoes" were but tried them after having it intriquitely explained to me and still not being sure whether I wanted to try it or not but having an adventurous moment push me over the edge. For me, the shack potatoes were not so hot, I would advise other options but to each their own, some may enjoy this.
As I would honestly rate it:
Food 8 or 9 out of 10
Atmosphere in the bar, maybe 6 out of 10, not without amusements but loud and hard to hear someone speak and can't hear what's on TV or anything besides the sometimes decent but mostly lame guitar guy.
Waitstaff: well I had to make an effort to have explained to me what to do here, so host staff maybe 7 of 10 but waitstaff was kind and attentive but maybe overly so as to be phony, so 9 of 10.
The atmosphere in the restaurant itself was nice but not super or anything, but the most important thing, the food, was very good. I would advise a trip here but be prepared to wait if you do not wish to be seated at the noisy bar. read more
