Mike's is your very basic quintessential brunch place, right next to Pratt campus it's almost always very busy and crowded. The coffee is about a 5/10 and so is the food. Nothing particularly stand out but it is very popular with the students. Food that I've gotten here has always been rather plain (I've been four times because I've got friends that like it here) but it's a good place to meet up with friends if you're in the area, just not up to my personal standards. read more

I really want to give this a 1.5 at best. We are so perplexed as to how this place has 4 stars! The food was very subpar. -The philly cheesesteak: it was on a roll which was not stated on the menu and dinnot have any peppers, only sprinkles of onion. On top of that, it barely had any meat! We told the waiter and he said that's how they always serve it? Have never been served such little meat on a philly. Waiter obliged and ordered more cooked meat from the kitchen. -Grilled chicken deluxe: had a nice grilled taste but could have used more chicken. They also could have used a slightly thicker bun so it wouldn't fall apart as the one used was of the lower grade kind carried in a standard supermarket. This was the only okay item we got. -beef sausage: only 2 halves were given, other diners usually serve 3. -french toast: made with standard sliced bread so very light and not your standard thick/challah style bread. Slightly cinnamony but mostly bland. In addition, one of ours had a large piece of eggshell in it. To top it off, the ambience is below average. Great food, great service. I didn't realize it was cash-only but luckily there's an ATM inside. The place is pretty tight and small. But my friend and I came here right when it opened after a red-eye flight to town and we absolutely loved it. Service was quick and friendly. The food that we got - chicken and waffles; blueberry muffin; egg omelette - was really good. The menu is super simple with limited options so don't expect anything fancy or unique. I'm using to having cheese and avocado in my omelette but they didn't have avocado and the only cheese they provided was sliced cheese which doesn't taste too good but did the job. Their hot sauce also adds great flavor to the eggs. And an additional perk to this place - the prices are VERY affordable (under $10). Great food for great price! Always would run into someone whether it was an old friend, someone in the music/film industry, Mike's was the spot. Fast forward, don't sit in the back near the bathroom, no stench but the smoke from the food is killing my eyes; better ventilation would help. The food was mediocre, grits bland, ham blah and the toast cold. My bae had a western omelette which has always been my favorite, that was okay. My daughter had pancakes, which back in the daze was always a top choice at Mike's...they still ranking pretty high with that. One last piece...while I enjoy all music, consider your customers please. I'm sure you enjoy pleasing your staff, but a mixture of music doesn't run customers away. read more

I grew up on Mike's, but I remember liking the food a lot more as a kid. I'm still awfully fond of the place, and this was pretty much the only place with a decent, full menu that was open on New Year's Day (2017, anyway), and for that, they score major points with me. Also, the guys behind the counter always let me take way too many mints when I was a kid, and I've got to appreciate that. There may be better diners in NYC; I'm almost certain there are. I don't really go to diners outside of states of inebriation, or recovering from states of inebriation, or extreme sleep deprivation, so who am I really to judge the standard? Still, I was pretty underwhelmed. I was just happy to be eating with friends on the first day of the New Year. Got bacon, eggs, and home fries and it was pretty meh. I really liked Mike's. Came for breakfast with my two oldest kids based on Yelp reviews. I was staying in an Airbnb right around the corner. This is a beautiful section of Brooklyn, filled with old, stunning architecture. Mike's is located right across from one of the entrances to Pratt. When we got there, there was a short wait of about 10 minutes for a table, I could tell that the booths were preferred by a lot of customers, but we took one of the few tables. The menu is typical old school diner fare. My usual go to is a western omelet. You would be stunned at the variety of ways a western can come out of a kitchen. Mike's nailed it in a really good way. Good cheap breakfast spot in Clinton Hill. There are a couple of booths along wall, tables in the center and seats at the bar. The menu is very simple but to the point. I ordered the 3 French Toast with bacon and egg. It comes with the tiniest glass of juice. The bacon was excellent; thinly sliced and extra crispy. Perfect! We arrived at around 1 on a beautiful Sunday. A nice older gentleman (Mike?) took our name and party size and told us there would be a 10-15 minute wait, which was pretty accurate- we waited outside for about 10 minutes before being called in. There's really no room to wait inside, so I don't know how this is all worked out in the winter. The restaurant itself just looks like a regular diner and has a bit of a throwback vibe. There were indeed lots of people here after church in their Sunday bests, dudes rocking suits... but the crowd is as eclectic as the neighborhood. People dressed up, people dressed down... we didn't feel out of place in our shorts and tshirts. The menu consists of pretty standard diner food. I ordered a delish iced coffee and, due to Yelp popularity, the chicken and waffles. Now, in the past, I haven't gotten too excited about the prospect of chicken and waffles, as I'm not a super huge fan of either fried chicken or waffles separately. But, guys, this dish was awesome. The chicken was tender and a little sweet itself and went perfectly with the fluffy, buttery waffle and some maple syrup to top it all off. The chicken was served on a separate plate, which was a little different, so I just transferred it all onto one plate. My friend ordered OJ, hot tea, french toast topped with cinnamon sugar, and also a side of scrambled eggs. I didn't try any of this, but she said the eggs were done perfectly, and she liked the french toast as well. We were kind of in a rush so we didn't quite have time to finish the big portions, and asked for a box to go. What a lovely walk to Mike's through Green Park and Clinton Hill. The streets are tree lined and populated by well kept up brownstones. Mike's is nestled into this community on a corner of Dekalb. It is a short walk to the Barclay Center from here and near many of the hotels in the area. Mike's is small but has superior food and service in my opinion. Roberto was behind the counter and served up a mean cup of joe this morning. He also kept the kitchen staff on their feet throughout my meal. Food came out in a flash. There was lots of it as well. My friend is a frequenter and immediately knew what she was getting -- blueberry waffle ($6), coffee, and a bacon, cheese, and egg sandwich on a roll ($5). Delicious. The blueberry waffle was absolutely delicious. I got a philly steak sandwich and fries ($7) -- I picked off an onion from the sandwich and ate it first. The onion itself was flavorful. My friend and I went here around noon on a Saturday and had no problem getting a seat at the bar. This is not a coffee shop. It's a diner. The coffee is diner coffee (brewed in a huge vat-like machine, simultaneously burnt-tasting and weak, all that good stuff), so don't go here for your vanilla upside-down macchiatos or whatever. I was impressed with the prices, mostly. I got two eggs, home fries, two slices of toast, orange juice, and coffee for $6 including tip. Seems like a good place to go after a night of drinking. Y'ALL. This is the ONLY place in all of Brooklyn that I've been able to get a Greek-American-style gyro. Growing up in Montgomery County, Maryland, there were tons of Greek restaurants and every one of them served gyros where the meat came in thinly sliced strips of lamb and beef. And, until now, I hadn't realized this was a Greek-American thing! Many of the gyros I've tried in Brooklyn have chunks of meat that are sliced/shaved but, because they are skewered whole pieces of meat to begin with, they have a different texture/flavor. It's just more reminiscent of BBQ in texture and, often, that's a bit too tough for me. Plus, when I'm craving a gyro, I'm craving what I grew up eating and that's a Greek-American gyro! Side note: My boyfriend ended up discovering all of this because we were so confused as to why the gyros here were so different from what we grew up eating so he Googled it. The reason Greek-American gyros are so soft and flavorful through and through is because they "are made with a large, sausage-like cone of seasoned minced lamb and beef." (Thank you, Serious Eats, for the lesson! Haha!) SO - back to Mike's Coffee Shop. They have Greek-American gyros and they are perfect. Get the gyro platter because it comes with some delicious fries. The sauce and lettuce and tomato and onion was all perfect with just the right amount of each. And now I'm craving another one even though I literally just ate this like 2 days ago.
