We stopped in on a Tuesday evening right at opening, and it didn't take long for the dining room to fill up with regulars. While the food took a little longer than expected to arrive, the overall experience was positive. My mom ordered the ribeye steak -- she said it was a bit tough but had good flavor. I went with the chopped sirloin patty, which was also slightly tough, though I suspect that's because it's made from lean beef, which I personally prefer. The sides were solid. We both enjoyed the turnip greens, and I really liked the black-eyed peas. The green beans were just okay -- clearly canned, so nothing special there. The atmosphere was exactly what you'd expect from a friendly, down-home mom-and-pop spot -- casual, welcoming, and unpretentious. If you are looking for a great local place, Mike Ellijay's is the place to go. The young ladies waiting the tables are amazing and super friendly. It truly makes going to Mike's an easy choice every single time whether it is going for breakfast or lunch. The food is always good. You have the option to choose between menu items or items on the board. My favorite go-to for ordering from the board are chicken & dressing, mashed potatoes with brown gravy & okra. The chicken and dressing come with gravy, but I often choose to leave it off as I love their cranberry sauce instead. Seating is very spacious, and I have seen them accommodate larger crowds if needed. I do suggest you get there as early as possible as people definitely love it there due to the consistency of great service and great food, so there are times they get busy. Looking for a local's dive in town? This is it! They were able to accommodate our party of 15 right away and the food came speedy! Country fried steak was a popular choice for many in our party. It was really good... the gravy was nice and peppery to compliment the fried steak perfectly. While they were out of trout, the whitefish was a worthy substitute as well as a large portion. We ate here on October 8th. The vegetables were good. The chicken casserole wasn't made how I am use to it so it didn't taste bad just not the way I like it. Service was fair could been better. We went here 3 times while on vacation. Two for breakfast and once for dinner. The breakfast is very good and hard to beat the prices. The dinner, I had the whole Catfish. It was good, not great. Very greasy but loved the cornmeal/flour combination breading. The hush puppies were decent but not great. The cornbread muffins were not good. Serving tasty southern cooking, Mike's Ellijay Restaurant is a friendly, no-frills diner. We stopped here for breakfast on the morning of the Total Solar Eclipse in August, and enjoyed a great meal to start our day. Our breakfasts were served quickly, and everything was delicious. I now understand why this place was recommended by my friend who owns the cabin where we stayed nearby. Hubs asked for extra biscuits, because he loved them that much. This trip in was not good in any way. We walked in to be ignored so we just sat wherever. My waitress was not very friendly and fast to try and give us our check before we got two bites in. She brought my daughters soup out after her terrible bologna sandwich. I had a veggie plate and everything on my plate was cold but the greens. Just as I decide "it is what it is" then a group of teenage boys sit beside us and the two young waitresses decide to sit and talk right beside us about gossip around high school and even asked him if he was going to eat and did he have money?!?! A couple of the boys seemed embarrassed. As I write this review she is back and chatting again! She is taking they're order but chatting just as much. Very annoying to say the least. Not to mention I don't enjoy looking at the girls rear ends! Thats how close they stood by our side of the table. Maybe a good poke in the butt by my fork might have got them to go else where and take other tables orders! I decided to not finish my plate and when the waitress offers to warm it up after her long absence. I decided then I just wanted to get out of there asap. Mike needs to come in and check on his staff and kitchen a little more often. I definitely will not be returning again anytime soon. I don't care if it is cheap. However, our choices were limited because we got there at 1:45. What we did have was excellent-chicken livers with grilled onions,chopped steak, grilled chicken, and grilled cheese sandwich ($1.75), There is also a plentiful salad bar. I know people who eat there two meals a day, but I'm never hungry enough after breakfast to eat again for a while.
