Amazing tri-tip cut thinly so you can actually bite through it and not fight to keep it in the sandwich!

This used to be my go to place for tri tip sandwich, it's been a while since I stopped here was craving it so stop by today. Pretty disappointed as I pulled up. Service was fine and the food tasted alright. The "jumbo" sandwich was anything but. I ordered the jumbo and my buddy had a normal sandwich and they both appeared to have the same amount of meat. The bread was also burnt and falling apart in crumbs. The chili is all beans and no meat (despite looking like the opposite). Wendy's chili has more meat in it. That being said I was urged to give this place another chance and plan on going back to try the pulled pork. It's not that far off from Dog House pricing and if it doesn't have around the same amount of meat I will be incredibly sad especially after hearing how good this place (once) was. read more

I've been a solid fan of mikes for years, but after my most recent visit I will NOT be back. The original owners were amazing; so kind, it in for the food, and just really cool people. Whoever bought them out is obviously just here for the money. I called in my order at 6:55, yes, right before they closed, but I was already on my way right after work. Ordered two sandwiches, that's it. I get there, and the lady at the front says "I sold one of them because you got here after 7" (it was literally 7:02) I placed an order for food that I wanted, literally told them I was driving there right then, and she TOOK MY ORDER. Always satisfied with the tri tip at Mikes. The meat is flavorful and I like the bread. It's not too think and always toasted nicely. That little crunch is nice and it's just the right amount of protein, not too full. My go to side is the rice pilaf. read more

This place is tiny, but man the flavor is big here! I am from a small town about an hour and a 1/2 away, decided last minute to stop before heading home, SO GLAD WE DID. the menu is simple but so good! Got a tri tip sandwich and it was review worthy! I am sorry I took a picture of what is left, it didn't occur to me to take a picture right away. I highly recommend the bread was so soft and flaky, and just melts in your mouth along with the tri tip, can not wait to eat here again. The pulled pork sandwich is also good. The service was awful! When I asked about my order status I was interrogated about whether or not I purchased a meal. The lady behind the counter made me feel like a criminal for asking for the meal I payed $40 for... the old owners would have never! I can strongly say I will not be coming back. Fast service, fantastic tri-tip! Ugh the tri-Tip is sooooo tender! If you're watching your weight I would maybe ask them to skip the butter- it's a heavy dose of garlic butter on the toast but wow is it tasty! I think it's worth it! I was glad to finally get to try this place out for lunch, we got ribs, tritip, beans and macaroni salad. Everything was ok flavor wise but nothing stood out. By dinner time my husband my daughter and myself got sick I can't say 100% it was due to this food but this was the only things we all ate together that day. This is the way I like my food--fresh with no frills. The man cooks like I do with butter, pork, bread; just simple foods made to taste delicious. The menu is limited because it's a small place so if they run out before you get there, oh well, come back tomorrow. They can't just go out back to the freezer, pull out more food and microwave it. Everything is cooked for that day so it is ultra fresh and very tasty. My husband had the tri-tip sandwich, which was good; but I had the pulled pork (because I could eat pork every day) and it was divine. I normally eat half of my sandwich, and even pull the ingredients out because it's tooooo much. Not this time. I ate the whole thing. The pork was very tasty, with a bit of crunch and tang from the marinated veggies. Someone else mentioned the roll. It is very good, perfect for this sandwich. No frills. You get your sandwich in a brown paper bag with a few napkins and some sauce. You can sit at the short counter or out under the trees in the parking lot. There are no slogans, no signs, just good food done right. Can we have a few more places like this in Fresno? read more

The ONLY place in town you should even think about getting a tri-tip sandwich. This place sets the bar so high all others like doghouse etc tastes sub standard. The bread is basically garlic bread, the meat never has that re-heated taste, bbq sauce is solid. I've been aware of Mike's Grill for years but somehow never got around to visiting it. It's HOT outside but on a slightly cooler day I decided to finally give it a bash. And friends, it is excellent. For the unfamiliar, Mike's Grill is in a parking lot with outdoor seating only. The menu is a good size - a few sandwich options, a few sides, and an option for a combo. I got the smaller pulled pork sandwich on a brioche roll with slaw. The pork was flavorful, not too wet and not too dry, and the slaw complemented it nicely. The smaller size was perfect for me and saved some room for the sides. My husband got the standard tri-tip sandwich, the roll for which reminded us of the rolls from Quizno's - absorbing a little flavor without getting soggy from the barbecue sauce. I ate some of it too. The tri-tip is tender and juicy. As some have noted it isn't piled high with several slices of meat (though if you want that, you can order the jumbo), which is exactly what he was looking for. We wanted to try all the sides so got the chili beans, macaroni salad, and potato salad. I found the chili beans a little heavy but my husband loved them. Not too spicy, but quite peppery. The potato salad is moist and tasty, with a good consistency and no dry after-taste. The macaroni salad was good too, if a little forgettable up in the mix with everything else. Everything was delicious. Can't have dairy so since there were no ingredients listed on the bread, I ordered a polish dog with no bun and pulled pork by itself. Both were very flavorful and tasty. Mikes has been a staple for our family for many years. However I have noticed a change in the quality the last few years and as a result have been going by less frequently. Back in the day you would be able to see and talk to the owner on a regular basis while he cooked the trip. The meat just hasn't been as tender or flavorful the last few times I have gone and that is such a shame. read more

The tri tip sandwich was ok (I prefer Doghouse Grill). I thought it was light on the meat, which was my main disappointment. The meat itself was tender but with very little smoked flavor. The BBQ sauce was sweet, tangy and delicious. The garlic bread it was served on tasted great but needed to be toasted a little longer, as it got soggy fast. Service was no nonsense and our food was brought out to us after a few minutes in a to-go bag. Plenty of parking and a makeshift tented patio was set up if you want to eat there. The tri tip sandwich combo (sando+small side or bag of chips+fountain drink) for $11 is a fair deal, just wish they put more meat on it. read more

Simple, high quality, good service, delicious. A friend in Fresno recommended this place to me and I couldn't seem to find a good picture of the interior. Maybe that's because there's no inside seating! This place is best described as a sandwich stand with some simple tables under an awning. Don't judge a book by its cover. When a tri tip sandwich gives the option to "go jumbo" you don't ask questions. Just do it. The 9.99 version is easily worth the extra couple bucks. This sandwich was one of the most tender and delicious tri tip sandwiches I've ever had. The garlic bread with the tri tip formed a nice simple flavor that was still excellent! I didn't need any sauce to enjoy it, and after a few bites I got some BBQ sauce to mix it up and even though I'm not wild about BBQ sauce it was extremely delicious. The sandwich was the exact amount of food that I needed to be satisfied. No more, no less, exactly right. Praise Jesus that I don't work in the business park nearby: I would be at this place every single day. Every excuse I can muster, I'll be back to enjoy mike's grill! read more

All I have had from this establishment is the tri tip sandwiches so know that this review is based solely on these sandwiches. I have had them a few times and I have not been impressed any of the times. The bread is decent but the meat tastes like overseasoned pot roast. The BBQ sauce they serve it with is a molasses type and does not compliment the sandwich at all. I actually find the bitterness of the molasses a bit off-putting. The sandwich itself is not very big and even if you order it with double the meat it still is not a very big sandwich. The rest of the food could be good there, I don't know, but what I do know is that there are several places around to get a much better tri tip sandwich than this place. read more
