Tried this place for first time. Came today (Saturday) around 3 pm. Wasn't busy, no wait. I was the only customer. I asked the worker (unknown if owner or employee), an older Mexican guy with an accent, if the food was cooked daily since I noticed that the large outside bbq grill/cooker appeared to be closed and cold. Maybe they cooked earlier on this grill/cooker but it didn't look like it. I was told "yes" the food is cooked daily. I ordered the Jumbo tri tip sandwich for $14. only to discover it was maybe a medium sized sandwich at best and not a Jumbo size (so false advertising). The tri tip appeared and tasted like it was oven cooked. No browning or charring on any part of the meat, and had zero smoke flavor. No other condiments in the sandwich as well (pickle, onion, mustard, etc.). I suppose I could have asked for it not to be just plain but thats how it comes, plain. They give you a couple small containers of bbq sauce. In short, this sandwich was more of a smaller, plain, oven cooked, $6 sandwich at best. They'll have to do better than this to get more return customers. Won't be back. read more

If it's your first time at Mike's, you'll probably be scratching your head when you pull up and see a small building with a bunch of pop-up tents and tables behind it. There's not much of a view besides the street and a meat smoker, but what the eatery lacks in ambiance, it makes it up with in it's food. The menu is simple and it's all meat! I went with the tri-tip sandwich as it was supposed to be the best in Fresno, and it didn't disappoint. The meat was tender and I enjoyed the toasted bread that it was served on. I especially liked the BBQ sauce that comes as a side for dipping, but I think lathering is the best plan of attack as that stuff is like crack. I got the regular sized version, but I saw on the menu that they had an even bigger portion and rumor has it, it gets bigger as the day goes on. The combo comes with a side of your choice and a drink. I was feeling macaroni salad and loved that it wasn't drenched in mayo. The pasta shells in the portion were cooked perfectly and complimented my hand-held well. I'd for sure come back for the tri-tip, but would love to take on the baby back ribs, too! read more

This is probably one of the best spots I been to for a tri tip sandwich. The pulled pork sandwich is well made and very delicious.I like the toasted bread as well. The hotlink sandwich was very tastey but I thought It would of been spicey but It wasn't at all. I had the rice pilaf and chili beans they were ok at best. It is a little over priced but not by much. Yelp 2016 Review 100 Challenge - #16 I always thought I reviewed this place, but guess not. Mike's Grill is definitely one of the better tri-tip spots in town, and has always been pretty consistent. For those who remember Keith's Box Car in downtown Fresno, he used to work alongside with the owner here and I believe they made their tri-tip with a similar method, if you are missing what Keith used to offer. The tri-tip here is delicious, and always has a good smokey flavor to it. They offer a regular and a jumbo size. The regular size is def good enough to fill you up. Their ribs are also smoked perfectly, and goes great with their bbq sauce. Many don't often their sides, but they are definitely something to order all the time as well. Their pilaf and bbq beans are delicious and are definitely recommended. They sometimes also offer off-the-menu specials, like "Applewood Smoked Chicken Thighs" etc every now and then, which should please those who want something new from their regular items. Overall, I hope Mike's Grill stays here forever and stays the way they are and don't try to be cute with expanding their menu, concept, bbq method, etc. read more

Mike's claim is "Best Tri-tip Sandwich in Town". Sorry to say Mike that I have had it and it's not. Well, I have to rate the overall experience.. As for the Tri-Tip ($7.25) it was "OK" ...3 stars. The smoke flavor was there and there was enough meat, but the meat was a bit dry, I have had better in Fresno. The BBQ sauce that was provided on the side was "OK" also but not as good as I have experienced in Fresno. I also ordered a side of garlic toast ($1.69) and wish I had not because it was just the same as the bread used on the sandwich. Where the 1 star comes into play is the fact that when eating outside, you have to put up with all the files. I had to throw some of the bread away because of the successful touch down's on it from the flies. "They" delivered my sandwich outside and saw that I was sitting at a table, but never came out to ask if everything was ok. Would not go back. read more

The good: They have a great pulled pork sandwich, and pretty tasty tri tip. They make all of their food fresh at the beginning of the day. The employees have all seemed to be pretty friendly. The meh: For a BBQ place with almost no overhead, they are quite pricey. There isn't any indoor seating, and the outdoor is just a canopy with uncomfortable plastic tables and chairs, situated in a parking lot. There is nowhere to get refills. They are also pretty dang slow, especially considering that all of their food is pre-cooked before they open. They don't have fries! For a place that sells BBQ sandwiches, this is EGREGIOUS (ok it's not that bad; if you're like us you just swing by McDonalds afterward as it's in the same parking lot). They do have some pretty good chili, as well as beans, rice pilaf, and bags of chips. The bad: They don't have set days/hours. Don't plan on driving from across town unless there is some other reason to come to this area, because their posted hours are just suggestions. They say they are open until 7 but I've seen them closed as early as 3. If it's a holiday, a Sunday, or just a day divisible by 5, they could just be closed with no prior warning. I imagine that the owner is making so much money with this place that he/she doesn't really care. On top of that, 7 is pretty dang early to close up shop. If you're hoping for a late dinner, forget about it. Also, once they run out of an item, that's it. No more for the day. It could be noon on a Saturday, but if they are out of pulled pork, "aint no one getting no more pulled pork today". In all honesty, this place barely meets the definition of being a business, and deserves more like a 2, but everyone who has been here knows that their BBQ is some of the best in town, so I can't make myself give them any less than 3. 5 star food, 1 star everything else. This place sets the bar high for what an amazing perfectly cooked tri-tip sandwich should be. The buttery, garlicy, perfectly toasted bread is the icing on the cake. The little shack sits on the corner of a busy shopping center, but looks are deceiving. I must add, I was not impressed by their sides. The baked beans were nothing to write home about and same goes for their rice pilaf. Sides aside, save your $$ and seriously just go for the jumbo sandwich. I've brought family from out of town (San Diego) who have requested I bring them a sandwich from here on my trips back to San Diego. It's that good. Again, don't bother with the sides. Just go jumbo and also don't bother with the BBQ sauce. It's perfect without it. It does the job, meat more on the salty side but something different if you're tired of the carnival of people at DHG (Dog House Grill). The place is outdoor so if you a pansy boy or girl then you won't enjoy the outdoor seating of the elements. Kinda pricey, almost same price as other places but it is better than some. I don't think is the BEST place is Fresno, it is certainly up there in the top 5 in the city but doesn't take top spot. I am not biased or a bandwagon jumper but to me and the family DHG is still the best as in price, size and taste. I just despise the parking spots and the College kids plugging up the restaurant. The beans and the macaroni salad were on point tho, they added that extra kick of flavor to the sandwiches. Meat was a little salty but certainly tasted the smoky flavor and that is good. I have been driving past Mike's Grill for the past 2 years. Last month I finally got the urge to stop and try something. Ordered the jumbo tri tip sandwich combo and also a half rack of ribs. The tri tip sandwich was awesome. It's better when you dip it in the BBQ sauce that it comes with. The bread is the same as their garlic bread. The rib was even better. You can pull the meat right off the bone. I have been there at least 5 times since the first visit. The tri tip was still good as ever. My only disappointment is that the size of the BBQ sauce is now smaller. Also somehow the rack of rib is not the same. The first time I visited, Mike was there to meet and greet us. Maybe the skills of his two other helpers on the grill are not as good with the ribs. Prices are okay. Rib prices did go up. But overall, one of the best tri tip sandwiches I have had in Fresno hands down. Visited Mike's Grill again on 11-5-11. The tri tip sandwich never disappoint. I asked to see if they charged for extra cups of BBQ and they said no. Tri tip tastes even better when you have enough BBQ sauce to dip it in. Awesome! read more

The reviews for this place don't lie- this is the spot to go for a satisfyingly delicious tri-tip sandwich. I was actually out for a margherita panini from the bakery down the street, but they are part of a growing list of retarded bakeries I've run across that only serve cafe food until 2pm, yet they're open until 6pm. Their loss is Mike's gain! By itself, the sandwich is quite good, the meat is juicy and tender, but its even better with the BBQ sauce. As someone else has mentioned- it has the perfect meat to bun ratio. You never get a mouthful of just bread. I also tried the potato salad, but unfortunately, it was a flop. Not a fan of it at all. It was more like dry, vinegary mashed potatoes. A very weird taste and texture. I like it more creamy and rich, with fresh dill. The guy who (I think) owns the place is super friendly and had no problem recommending items on the menu to a first-timer like me. I came around 6pm and was surprised to be the only one there, given all these glowing reviews. Though the food comes out so fast, I'm sure a long line would be taken care of in no time. Rating this place four stars because I can see why people love this place but I personally am not a fan. I have been so excited to try their trip tip sandwich because so many people said it is better than Dog House's but Mikes grill offers too much seasoning. If you like the simply Smokey flavor that dog house offers than Mikes Grill is not for you but if you love super seasoned food the sandwich would be great for you. The bread was too much along w the all the seasoning on the tri-tip, all the flavors together was just overwhelming.
