Firstly, what a beautiful venue. Gardens, ponds all set in a tucked wooded setting. We were there for a wedding, and was so pleasantly surprised at how perfect of a setting it was. Sarah out does herself as the hostess. Her sincerity genuine, her smile welcoming, and her keen eye to details shows why the place has its reputation. The staff were all friendly, fun, engaging, that they felt like friends. Tasty hors d'oeuvres, nice buffet spread, and really delicious tri tips! Don't waste your money. We arrived and stood at hostess desk for a good 10 mins waiting for someone to arrive- restaurant was not busy. Service SUCKED! Our waitress said she worked there for 5 years.. she was so timid, didn't know what a Kir was and was Sooo slow. Took do or ever to get served, made mistakes- ridiculous. Menu very confusing and upcharged everything for supposedly a 4 course meal. Iced tea- no free refills at $3 each??? I think not. We got charged for 5 when we had 2 small glasses filled with ice and two refills. I'll never eat here again. read more

We love the mile away! We've been coming fairly regularly after things started getting back to normal post pandemic and have loved the patio area. The bartender Chelsea and waiter Bryce are awesome! Attentive, knowledgeable, and engaging. Makes every experience that much better. Recently went to Oktoberfest and had a blast! Things were a little hectic when they opened with long line for everything, but once the initial rush calmed down, everyone was able to relax and enjoy the great food beautiful gardens, music and beer. This is the first Yelp review I have ever left, because our experience was so awful I felt obliged to. We were planning to have lunch outside on the patio at Mile Away on Sunday afternoon. We have have only been here one other time. We arrived and took seats at the bar. Immediately, both bartenders looked annoyed that we had arrived. The only other people sitting at the bar were clearly friends of theirs, and they could not be bothered to have to attend to anyone else. We have both worked in the service industry before so get it, but that being said we were genuinely made to feel uncomfortable and like we were interrupting them to ask for a drink or anything we needed. They continued to talk badly about the chef of the restaurant and when the chef stated that there was something on the menu that we wasn't on the menu, we said "you're right, it's not on here!" in support of them. They said "glad you were listening", implying that we were eavesdropping and then ignored us while they continued to talk loudly about it. Listen. I get it. It's been an awful 16 months for those who work in the service industry, and I would never, ever write a review like this if it wasn't completely warranted. That being said, I have never felt so uncomfortable and so disrespected when we are very low maintenance people who understand the service industry. Don't go here. read more

We've enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner here on a number of occasions. Today we tried The Patio to enjoy the sun and be outdoors. We were graciously greeted by the bartender who was also our waitperson. He was excellent and the patio setting was comfortable. . However, the food is way overpriced for what they serve. The potato salad appeared to have been made by leftover red potatoes that had been grilled when originally served. The Patio Cuba was $18 and arrived with 2 slices of bread doused in mustard with a slice of ham and a tiny bit of pulled pork with cheese melted into the bread. Frankly, it was awful. My dining partner was OK with his BLT and chips! So not a total loss. read more

Discovered this restaurant a few months ago on date night and absolutely love it. Atmosphere is rustic with wide pine floors and wooden walls. The grounds of the restaurant itself are peaceful. I only wish there was currently outdoor seating. According to one employee, an outdoor bar is in the works. The menu is what I love most about this restaurant. There is a perfect amount of variety and you are left struggling to choose which of the many delicious sounding options to eat that day. Service is quick and friendly. This is better than great. We recently went for a romantic dinner to celebrate our anniversity. I should start by saying I have been coming to The Mile Away since 1979 and it has never failed to satisfy and at times wow me. This was a WOW time. At our recent visit we discovered that The Mile Away had updated their menu but not their prices. Plus the best was yet to come. I have travelled a lot and have had Veal Marsala out at many restaurants. It is a dish I could use to judge a new place. A My wife ordered the Chicken Piccata and I Veal Marsala. BOTH dishes were out of this world and probably the best I have ever tasted. The veal was tender, the sauce perfect in its texture and taste. It did not overpower but accent the tender veal. My wife had the same experience. Now I do cook at home and have attempted this at home. There was something quite different and delicious about the sauce at the Mile Away, so I called and asked if it was X ingredient. They said yes. I made it that night and honestly will have to tweak the amounts I used but my Marsala is forever changed. Let me add the service was out of this world. The server suggested a little bread to soak up the delicious sauce in the Escargot. Great call. The atmosphere is wonderful and all in all an 11 star restaurant. My nana has always hosted Thanksgiving, but now that she's in her 90s we thought we'd take her out for it instead! We had a great holiday dinner at Mile Away. Full cocktail menu including caramel apple vodka sangria, 4 course meal with great choices (I had the maple salmon for an entree) and we all especially loved our desserts. Its been over 6 months since visiting the Mile Away, but while going through photos on my computer a particular picture brought back my memory of the place. The place in nestled on a country road in what appears to be an old farm house. The interior clean, simply decorated yet rustic. Whats great about this review is that although I forgot what I had for a main entree, there are some very memorable details that made this place stand out to me. All dinner include salad, your choice of appetizer, entree, vegetable and desert. We chose a wine "flight" which featured four small glasses of red wines. I've seen it done with beer, but never with wine. The appetizers selections were interesting and diverse. I chose the Swedish meatballs, then on to a lovely mixed green salad which did not appear to have been dumped from a premixed bag-o-greens. As I said before I forgot what my main entree was. My vegetable choice was glazed acorn squash with golden raisins yum! Dinner was enjoyable and filling. Although desert was included I could not eat another bite. The waitress packed up our desert choice (mine was apple strudel) which tasted homemade. Excellent value! read more

I came to The Mile Away in Mildford, NH for a nice outdoor wedding on a day that the weather people were forecasting rain showers at times. Instead, we were blessed with really blue skies and warm weather, and I feared for my fair skin because I didn't think to slather on any sunblock. The wedding coordinator lady at The Mile Away was pretty good at encouraging folks out to the back, for the wedding, and then later back in for the luncheon. The wedding set up out back was simple yet pretty, and they wisely had a path of stone paving the way so the ladies had some support for their heels as they made their way down to their seats. There's also a white tent back there, but we didn't use it - we were really glad the lunch was to be indoors where there was air conditioning and fewer bugs to contend with. After the wedding ceremony, we drifted off to an area of tables and chairs that was well covered by the shade of trees as we consumed passed appetizers as well as the healthier selections of fruit and veggies and ummm... cheese and crackers - less healthy, but still there nontheless. Soda and alcohol was available at the indoor bar, and ice water was set out for our convenience at a table close to the fruit table. I found all three passed apps tasty and not at all dry - a selection of mini quiches, chicken with a mango dipping sauce, two types of bruschetta. For our lunch, we took up eight tables of 8-10 people... unfortunately though, the layout of the room placed a staircase in the middle, so that those sitting in the back room could hear but not see the happenings on or by the dance floor. On the whole, the food was great. They started us off with a fruit plate with a scoop of raspberry (?) sorbet. Unfortunately the watermelon was a pale pink and not very sweet. The salad was a little overdressed, but I enjoyed the mixed greens, carrot, tomato and cucumber blend, croutons and all. The same selection of vegetables and oven roasted potatoes dressed each entree plate, but everyone was happy with their selection, whether it be beef tenderloin, chicken cordon bleu, or shrimp. I got the shrimp. It was four stuffed shrimp per plate - the stuffing a breadcrumb based sort (no seafood that I could see) that was not too dry but not particularly special, which it did its job of keeping the shrimp moist. The vegetables were prepped well; they lost none of their color nor natural flavors. The cake, now that stood out... we were surprised to find out that it was prepared inhouse. This is a huge banquet style building with a giant moose over one of the fire places to set the scene. They have many traditional German and European dishes to enjoy including my favorite beef stroganoff. This is an older scene not great for romantic dates or for younger couples . Typically in the summer they will also have a wedding on site which usually fills up the marking lot. Where they do you wrong is a couple of ways, they have a chicken liver patte that they serve on cheap crackers instead of a toasted bread. There sides are something out of a dooms day bunker, pickled beefs, mixed veggies, carrots and peas all from cans are an obvious throw away and the only detail they lose points from me. read more

During the Covid pandemic, we decided to have our anniversary dinner at The Mile Away on Saturday. The atmosphere with the outdoor seating was very nice. All servers were wearing masks and also practiced physical distancing. It took a while to be waited on (we had to ask the host if he could send someone over to take our drink order) but were trying to be patient. All other servers were on their game but unfortunately, ours was a bit on the slow side overall. The food was spectacular as usual. My only complaint would be the Jager sauce for the Weinerschnitzel. For a $2 upcharge, I would've expected more quantity than approx. 3 tablespoons (approximate) of sauce. Other than that, a good experience! read more

About a week before we all became housebound, my wife and I were taking out two friends for a special thank you dinner. Our guests had never been there before (they lived on the seacoast until recently moving to Manchester). Everyone enjoyed their meal very much. None of us usually order desert. However the Mile Away offers you the option to turn your entree into a four course dinner for an additional $4 (worth it, worth it, worth it). The service was efficient and friendly and all courses were very enjoyable. When things get back to normal we will all look forward to a return trip, with a few more friends too. read more

When made reservations I was not told special menu for Valentines..the only thing I eat there is the steak..no steak on menu. Compromised and ordered cuts of tenderloin, it was chewy and tasteless. I booked this restaurant a month ago (party of 5) to celebrate a friends birthday & holiday brunch at 1pm (opening time) today. The restaurant has a quite cozy & quaint atmosphere in a old farmhouse style setting. The host hurried us to a cozy nook in the corner at 1:05 pm. The friendly waitress warmly welcomed us and immediately took our beverage order. At 1:20p the host approached our table and ask if we knew when the last guest will arrive, while I was giving my friend phone directions to the restaurants entrance. She then informed us that our table will be "flipped" right after we finished dining. We found it very rude since we just sat down. As we looked around the room, we noticed 9 empty tables in that particular room, two tables occupied with two patrons and another table occupied four. Throughout our meal my friends and I felt rushed and weren't able to fully enjoy each other's company since we supposedly had a time limit. We ordered the filet mignon and Salmon, both dishes equally delicious. The chocolate mouse cake & cheesecake was scrumptious. Rolled up on a Friday evening around 8pm, we had made a reservation just in case since we had not been before. Their hours are strictly dining times, from 5pm - 9pm, Tuesday through Saturday. Parking was easy, they have a large lot. Upon crossing the threshold we both caught a certain "old home" scent, more on that later. We were promptly seated, probably did not need the reservation. The interior is a rustic German and Swiss lodge feel. There are a couple of different dining rooms. We were seated in a smaller room by a window overlooking there grounds. It was getting dark, but you could see that the grounds were kept nicely. The waitress was a woman in her 50s I would guess. She was friendly, prompt and professional. Seated in my chair, I took in the surroundings and glanced over the other patrons of the Mile Away, and I asked my wife "did we just crash the wrap party for 'Cocoon 3: Live Free or Die'?" Sliced bread was offered while she took our drink orders. I am a bit of a beer snob, so I was happy to see that they had much more than the standard Bud, Heineken, Amstel Light offerings. Local Milford brewery Pennichuck was on draft, props for supporting the hometown brewery. I ordered a Julius Echter Hefeweizen, it was served in the bottle with a proper Weizen glass adorned with a lemon. I tossed the lemon, as any quality hefeweizen should not need to be altered from what the brewer intended. But if you're drinking a Corona, by all means go ahead and throw a whole lime in there! The wine list was substantial but I did not spend much time looking at the individual bottles offered. The entrees are all served with an appetizer, salad, main course with sides, and dessert. Sometimes the quality of the food suffers when restaurant does it this way, but I'm glad to say it did not here. All the food served was tasty. I had Swedish Meatballs along with a tossed salad to start off with, my main course was a NY strip with Swedish potato (riced and fried with diced canadian bacon), braised cabbage and mixed vegetables. The portions were medium to large. I had the swedish meatballs, tossed salad, NY strip steak along with steamed veggies, Swedish potato (riced and fried w/ canadian bacon). My dinner came in at $24.95, which I thought was an excellent value for the amount and quality. I had a Grimburgen Dubbel with my dinner, and at $4.50 this is a super value for a solid Belgian beer at a restaurant. It wasn't served in proper glassware, a chalice in this case, but I can forgive that for the price. For dessert I had the chocolate raspberry cake with a cup of coffee, while my wife had the key lime cheesecake, both were good. As we left the restaurant through the front door, my wife and I came across that peculiar scent, it reminded us of "old homes". Not in a bad way really, you know maybe Aunt Ester's house or ol' Miss Jenkins' place. Overall the experience was very good, despite our olfactory curiosities. This place is quaint and different. It has a bit of history and charm. Big wedding venue. I like it for pre-fixe idea. However, while the interesting menu items are there - the quality of the food is only fair. I'd say they buy from Sysco or the like and dress it up. I'd expect them to use more artisan cheeses and bread, for example. Farm to table idea would be more in keeping with the atmosphere and prices. The actual building is historic and pretty. You're paying a lot for atmosphere only. I like that it's not an Olive Garden type place - it's small family owned. But the food quality is no better. Went with a couple for New Years Eve. We've dined here a few times before and absolutely loved the ambiance and the food. It's a very European setting, which is something my wife and I like about the restaurant. The menu is heavy on European fare as one might expect and we've never had a bad meal there. While on NYE, it was a bit busier than normal and the wait staff a little slower, we didn't really mind. The food was incredible as always. Man, I wish there were half-stars available on Yelp because so often I want to add a half! I want to give The Mile Away Restaurant 3.5 stars. Made a reservation here on a whim on a Friday night. I had seen the restaurant from afar a few times while out on a run around town, and always wanted to check it out. Pretty green farmland frames the picturesque farmhouse and when you reach the entrance you are greeted by two large rich looking wooden doors. As soon as I opened the door I felt like I had left Milford. This place really doesn't seem to feel like it belongs in this small NH town. The food here is a Swiss/German style and it is reflected in the decor. Cozy roaring fireplaces, dark wooden beams, and pictures of European countrysides, mixed with average looking tables and chairs, give the restaurant the feel of both a romantic Swiss Chalet, and your German grandmother's house. I know, it sounds contradictory but it somehow works. The price of your entree (prices range from $17.95-$26.95) includes an appetizer, salad and a desert. The appetizers include Vichyssoise, Soup Du Jour, Swedish Meatballs and Baked Stuffed Clams. There are also appetizers you can substitute for a small price, like Crab Cakes or Escargot. For your Salad course, you can choose between Caesar Salad or Mixed Greens and a choice of dressings for the mixed greens. The desert choices are selections from a pastry tray, sorbet and peach melba. The entrees consist of different types of Schnitzel, Marsala, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Rack of Lamb, and several Steak and Seafood dishes. For my appetizer, I chose the Baked Stuffed Clams. Two large clam shells arrived brimming with golden brown stuffing. One of them seemed to have absolutely no clam in it and the other was pretty generously stuffed with chopped pieces of clam. The stuffing was tasty but a little dry (the food was super hot when it arrived so it may have gotten dried out during it's time in the oven). Overall, I was a little disappointed by my appetizer but knowing there were several other items heading my way all for less than $30, I wasn't bothered by it. Probably wouldn't order that appetizer again though. John had the Swedish Meatballs and he loved them. The serving is 3 meatballs and he was trying to think of ways to get more of them! We both had the mixed green salad. Very fresh, mixed greens, and generous slices of tomatoes, and cucumbers. The dressings were very good also. For entrees, I had the Chicken Oscar and John had the Weinerschnitzel. The Chicken Oscar was sauteed Chicken medallions with asparagus, crabmeat and hollandaise sauce. The Chicken was cooked perfectly, the crabmeat was soft and moist, and the asparagus was crisp. The hollandaise sauce though? Not so good. Hollandaise sauce is not easy to get right but when it's good, it's really good, and when it's bad, it's just wrong. Luckily there wasn't so much hollandaise sauce on my meal that it ruined it, I pushed aside most of t and ate the rest. The rest of the dish was very good. John's Schnitzel was very good. It was pounded very thin and the breading was thin but had a nice crust to it. He ate every bite of the enormous piece of veal. We were ridiculously stuffed by desert, but it was included so what are you gonna do? I had the lemon sorbet and John had a piece of chocolate cake. Both were really good. The coffee was decent too. Overall, The Mile Away has a couple of things going for it. It's a great value, has an adorable and comfortable atmosphere, generous portions, attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff, and quality homestyle food. What it lacks in Wow-factor, it makes up for in other ways. None of the food blew me away, but it was good, and tasted like Mom made it. I'll definitely be going back to try out a few other Entrees. I have hopes that items without hollandaise will be better! I will update this review when I do. One last tip-make sure you are REALLY hungry when you go. It's a lot of food! read more

Mile Away is a restaurant very near where we live that has 'special occasion' written all over it. Well, though that's our perception, they really can make any occasion special and absolutely did so for my wife and I. We went out for a last minute celebration of our 22 wedding anniversary and neither of us expected the warmth and sincere friendliness of the staff. Our dining experience led us to want to enjoy the cool evening of the out door patio section over the indoor dining area. This typically comes with sacrificing the full menu with a very limited one. As is happens, they were hosting a wedding (a good time by the sounds of it) and the lot was pretty full to boot. When we asked if there was any flexibility on the limited menu, the waitress, upon learning of our special occasion, was willing able to offer us their 4 course menu. Certainly not obligated, most especially welcomed. She was great, attentive and on point! After a few adult beverages I tend to kid around and even got a brief serenade out of her! EPIC anniversary date. The food was expertly done, and the service was expertly performed. I really can't say enough about how good she represented the owners of this establishment-she was exactly who I would want representing mine! We are back from our Thanksgiving dinner and the Mile Away is excellent! Our all inclusive dinners were $30.95 & included an appetizer, salad, entrée with a vegetable & potato & a very nice dessert. We arrived at 1:45 for a 2:15 reservation. We don't live near the restaurant and so we left plenty of extra time - the gracious hostess seated us just after 2:00 pm, very nice. We have our turkey later at home, so the 3 of us order other choices. The waitress was great. We had some drinks/ wine and had our apps. I had the Pate - superb & very fresh - not a liver pate but a true country pate with a gerkin and other embellishments. My dining guests got the fruit plate with sorbet, and corn chowder - they were very satisfied .Salad Course - we all chose the field greens salad - I got the blue cheese dressing, the other 2 diners ordered the balsamic vinaigrette - all salads were generous, fresh and delicious. The entrees we had were- Wiener shintzel with swiss potatoes and butternut squash. Delicious! The others had the baked cod and Prime Rib - all looked excellent and I'm told we're great. I had some of the Prime Rib and it was great..
