the manager here is so geniune, kind, and takes connection with his customers very seriously. in the time i spent getting my nails done, i'd seen him answer several phone calls in which he addressed each customer by their name, offered patience and support, and met each of their preferences with care. he's very hands-on and takes the time to get to know each one of his clients. i usually avoid new nail artists because of a skin condition i have, making me susceptible to judgement from the artists. however, the woman who did my nails treated me like any other person and didn't bat an eye at my skin irritation, which made me feel incredibly comfortable here. i love the way my full set acrylics turned out. i will definitely be coming here from now on! the place is noticeably clean when you walk in, and i loved the decor. it was way more spacious than i expected. so comfy here!! read more

Today was my first ever visit to Mimi's and I have to say I was underwhelmed. I called ahead to schedule, but that did not seem to matter. The nail tech who did my nails (I didn't get her name) offered me gel FOUR times even though I was VERY CLEAR that I wanted a regular manicure and a regular pedicure. She did my manicure first, or should I say half of my manicure. She painted my nails at the pedicure station. I have never had this done before. The pedicure was okay, but she asked if I wanted my feet scrubbed (which was an extra charge that she didn't tell me about until check-out)--even though on that (the scrub, exfoliation), she did a good job. Before she painted my toenails, she asked AGAIN if I would like gel. I have never had gel, never want gel, and am very clear in my communication. They need to learn when to stop upselling. OMG. After she finished my nails, she put me in front of a mini fan (see picture) instead of under the drying table (though one of her coworkers came by and put me under the table). This is so annoying I paid $48 for a pedicure. First of all the salon was empty I came on a Wednesday afternoon around 330 left before 4pm. This lady did not exfoliate my feet before scraping it and no massage. The way she shaped my toes is ridiculous and as you see in the picture didn't even properly paint my toe nail fully . On top of that was filing my skin which resulted in the little scar you see there. DO NOT RECOMMEND not even on a time when they aren't busy can they do a simple good job. Mimis nails employees did a really bad job. They made my nails really thick and when I told her I wanted my nails to be longer she didn't listen. The paint job was not the best for me and for my friends nails he made the paint smeared. Also my two pointer fingers are the same length at all ones really shorter than the other. Although they talked in their language to look at buying new nail polish colors, I found them to be decent. However, two of my nails are breaking after a week of getting gels done. I went to get waxing for upper lip. It seems that I'm allergic to whatever product they use for it. If you get waxing for upper lip and eyebrows, just know you will be outside where everyone gets their nails done. Just when I thought I was out...Mimi pulls me back in with their $28 mani and pedi deal. How's a girl to resist, right? Resist, I say. Resist. I've been here several times, and while the shop is clean, and all of the equipment looks properly sanitized, but they just don't do a good job. For the pedicures, they never get all of the dead skin off the bottom of my feet. I know, gross, but I wear heels all the time, and I have more calluses on my feet then David Beckham. My husband rates my feet on the same scale as Home Depot does sandpaper. You see now, why getting a good pedicure is imperative to my relationship, right? Plus, most of the point of a pedicure is to get rid of the dead skin. As for the manicure...I shudder. No matter how often I ask them to go gentle on my cuticles, they always push my cuticles too far back, and when I'm not paying attention, they CUT my cuticles (a few times, to the point where I bleed). For those of you who have always gotten your cuticles cut - let Mama Fenny tell you that, that is bad bad bad. It makes your cuticles hard, and grow back ragged. Bad bad bad. Also, the color selection isn't the best, and with the exception of one lady, the rest of the manicurists are pretty cranky and not very nice. I've wanted to love them - or even tolerate them because they are so close to my house, and so inexpensive, but unless I'm truly desperate for a mani/pedi, I can do a better job at home. read more

Went to Mimi nails about a week ago for a gel fill. Thought it was all great until I got home that night. My gel polish had bubbled that same night on more than 4 nails !! It has looked terrible ever since. Eventually , about 3 days after , the bubbles popped and the top layer of my gel polish completely peeled off and looks hideous. I've been going to a Salon in Wheaton for the past few months to get my nails (gel) and eyelash extensions done, and thought I had come across one of the best. Unfortunately, the eyelash extensions with this other place wasn't the best, (they kept coming off!), so i went in search of another affordable salon here in Montgomery County. When I came across Mimi's reviews here on Yelp, I was kind of hesitant, as the reviews weren't all that positive...I'm so glad I didn't pay them any attention. My intent was to only get the eyelashes done, but when I arrived, I decided to go ahead and get my fill-in done as well. The young lady who did my fill-in must have been nervous, as she nicked me several times throughout the process. In addition, she kept trying to "up-sell" me and I it took several times of my saying "No!", before she finally let it go. They charged me an additional $5 to get an "American Manicure",(which is common), but there were no 'extras' given (in the design), that I've become used to with other salons. The one thing that I did like was the hand massage that was given, although I did not get a manicure. Not sure if that is something she threw in - just because - but it was a nice bonus. Once the fill-in was done, went to JUDITH to get my extensions done. The overall process was phenomenal. it took about 30 minutes for her to complete both eyes, but I've learned that that is about normal and that any time less than that could lead to the issues I experienced with the other salon. Contrary to the review left back in October, the eyelashes that she used were lightweight and she used different lengths on each eye to give it a more natural look/feel. Not sure what type of glue was used, but whatever she used did NOT irritate my eyes the way the one used at the other salon did. The only issue that I had was the constant attempt to up-sell me on services I had clearly indicated I was no interested and Judith not informing me that there would be a charge/fee for the removal of the old extensions. No matter that it was only an additional $5, the fact that that was not told me until AFTER everything was done, was a sore point with me. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with my experience and I will be going back (tomorrow as a matter of fact). The fact that they're here in Gaithersburg, (where I live), makes it easier...I won't have to travel too far for greater/better service. read more

They have this young receptionist working there that has the attitude of somone who has been working 50+ years. And both times I've been there, she was getting her nails done. DO NOT GO THERE! i came into the salon to get a polish change toes and my sister a pedicure. She starts taking off my pink polish and immediately goes to green polish. There's still pink polish around the edges. I tell her and ask to get a full pedicure and pay for the expensive option because the polish change was not good. She calls the manager they agree to do it. The girl who was supposed to do it walks out of the salon and 5 min later the manager says they can't do it. My pedicure was perfect, quick, and clean. I wish this place accepted tip on card but it doesn't stop me from going. I am not loyal to one nail salon but I may start soon. I want to be clear about things. This salon is walking distance from my house, and when I didn't have a car, I appreciated the convenience of sleeping in Saturday morning and treating myself to a mani/pedi or a wax without having to take the bus. And I did it of and on for a really long time... long enough to give a blanket review of almost all their services (and a good deal of their technicians). I will start with the cons: 1) Unless you are there right as they open or right before they close, it's noisy. Really noisy. Especially from Thursday-Saturday (although duh, since those are the busy days). 2) It's not the cleanest salon you'll go to. I also very rarely see the technicians wash their hands or prompt me to wash my hands *before* a service. And no, they don't use any kind of sanitizing spray as an alternative. And I've breathed more acrylic dust than I care to mention. Tsk tsk. 3) As most of these shops, they rush. If I'm paying $80+ bucks for a mani/pedi and giving a generous tip, I really don't want to see dry skin on my heels or bubbles in my polish even before I leave the shop. I know they are trying to make the most money they can, but NO. So sloooow it dowwwn. Also, calling for an appointment simply does not work. I did it a number of times, and I still had to wait for them to finish a service they took on for fits and giggles although I arrived on time. 4) Most of the technicians don't have any idea how to do much more than the first month of nail tech school - warm water manis, a quick pedi, and the basic square tip acrylic...which might still have small dents when filed and polished. Most grumble if you want almond or squoval tips. And gel polish designs? Nope nope nope. And...nope. Cave drawing in Lascaux are more precise. 5) Eyebrow wax is good, if you're willing to wait. Ask for Judy. If you've gotten this far, you might be wondering why I even went to the shop for so long. And it's those TWO stars - their names are Mike and Judy. Write those names down. Trust me - you will not be displeased if you ask for them by name. Just tell them not to rush. read more

I go to Mimi's for one service. I break a fingernail occasionally deep enough that it can't be trimmed. So I go to them for a silk wrap repair. The silk wrap stays on the nail for about 6 weeks while the nail grows back. They are priced very reasonable and since I go under an emergency, I'm always a walk-in. I haven't waited too long for service -- it only takes about 10 minutes to do a silk wrap, so perhaps it's easy to fit me quickly. read more
