Although we miss the Fremont location, we are willing to make the extra drive to Newark for Mingala. Service and food is excellent as always. The only difference is the space and Toast. It's much bigger and you can see through to the kitchen! And you can pay using your phone. I'm so happy that Mingala has invested in a bigger space. Portion sizes are a little smaller, so this place gets a 4 out of 5 stars. But the flavors for this place are authentic (not malay) but I eat enough asian foods to know what feels authentic or not. Big menu with a lot of choices and if you love spicyz this place is for you. If you don't like spice or thick flavors you might want to consider other spots. They pack Togo orders nicely and they store your food in a warming area until you arrive. For the tilapia, they wrap the tilapia in foil wrap and store the sauce in a separate container. Such a fuckin staple in our household and I will always recommend them for anyone trying out Malaysian food. We get the nasi lemak everytime, both chicken rendang and vegetarian versions are great, never dissapoints. The hokkien mee, tea leaf salad, and roti are also solid. read more

I don't recommend this restaurant because despite the positive reviews about how the food tastes great, my friends and I all agree that it doesn't taste like what they were supposed to be. To begin with, the roti bread is supposed to be very very thin and light and not thick like a layer of pita bread. The beef rendang didn't taste like what I expected it to be and I had been to local Malaysian/ Singaporean restaurants in the Bay Area and even to the countries of Malaysia and Singapore. Came across this place via search, hadn't heard about it before. It was almost full around 12.30pm but luckily got a seat with no wait. Ordered the Roti Prata to start with which was good. The roti had a bite to it, wasn't very thin and flaky. The curry was flavorful and perfect to soak the prata. Tried the Sambal Belacan fried rice which was a hit! Surprised to see how full the restaurant was for Saturday lunch considering they only recently opened at this location. Singlish spoken at several tables is an affirming sign of authenticity. I tried the Nasi Lemak with beef - my default dish for deciding if a Sin/Malay restaurant is up to par. The beef was tender, not enough to cut with a metal spoon but enough to easily poke a chop stick through it. Besides the three chunks of beef, the dish came with the usual assortment of sides. Rice tasted more savory than coconutty, and carrots were not pickled. Overall, a generous portioned, well cooked dish that I would get again. Cannot say the same for the satay chicken cutlet. Chicken was overfried, but peanut dipping sauce was on point. It's an open kitchen concept so I can see the cooks doing the stir fry dishes in the big woks. The noodle dishes were piping hot straight out of the woks. Even the staff ate it for lunch, so I'll be back to try. read more

We ordered couple dishes : basil fried rice, a veggie dish - Belachan Kang Kung string beans, Hainam chicken,Roti Pratha , stir fried noodle. The stir fried noodle was so so. Nothing special but the veggie dish was so tasty and delicious. The sauce for Roti was great. Nothing special about the Hainam chicken besides it was more yellowish and the sweet sour sauce was good. My friend and I tried V2 Belachan Eggplant, Okra and String Bean (shrimp paste and garlic with veggies), E21 Beef Rendang ( curry), and A13 Bak Kut Teh (herbal ribs/pork belly/tofu). I liked the flavoring and spice level of all the dishes. My favorite was the veggie dish as their vegetables were crisp and not overcooked. The meat dishes were a bit more disappointing because it felt like both the beef and pork were overcooked. So both proteins were on the dry and tough side. The herbal soup flavor for the bak kut teh was excellent though. If ordering from here, I would probably be willing to give that another try for lunch to see if the texture of the meat is better earlier in the day (in case it was because the meat had been stewing too long by dinner). read more

Mingala was my first introduction to Malay and Burmese food and absolutely did not disappoint! We've been here multiple times now and truly enjoyed the dishes and service. The staff is super friendly, the service is fast, parking is easy, portions are good, and I appreciate that it is open later than many of the other restaurants in the same plaza (closes at 9 PM on the days that they are open). Dishes I've tried: - Burmese tea leaf salad (A1) - 4/5: Refreshing and nice texture. - Galangal and lime soup with vegetables (A12) - 3/5: A slight amount of spice and creaminess from the coconut milk made it a good choice for a winter night, but I think it would've felt more substantial if we got it with meat instead of just vegetables. I also felt like the soup wasn't as flavorful as it could be, but I'm also a huge fiend for umami, so YMMV. - Black pepper tofu (V14) - 5/5: This dish is SO good. The tofu is fried perfectly and the veggies (carrots, bell peppers, red onion, and green beans) have a natural sweetness that works really well with the sauce. Out of all the dishes we've had, I think that I crave this the most when I think about coming back to Mingala. Absolutely love it. - Nasi lemak with beef (R1) - 5/5: Very solid - comes with rice, a couple of different veggies, egg, and peanuts. - Mee goreng with chicken (N15) - 5/5: Thick noodles with lots of veggies (potato, tomato, bell peppers, bean sprouts, red onion), and egg. The sauce is really tasty and this is an overall solid dish. Black pepper tofu, nasi lemak, and mee goreng are absolute favorites and repeat orders. There are a lot of interesting plates that we haven't gotten around to eating yet, so will 100% be back again to explore more of the menu. read more

We enjoyed our experience here!! The service was super nice and really helpful. We got the basil beef, hokkien mee noodle dish with chicken, and the house chili salmon. The salmon was deep fried!! We weren't expecting that, but it was good. Super crispy while still being drenched in the sauce. I will say, the sauce was a bit too sweet. It was almost like those bottled sweet chili Thai sauces that are mostly corn starch and sugar. It also only came with a few bell peppers and very few other veggies, I would have liked more. The basil beef was tender with good flavor and the noodles were good too! Everything was tasty and I'd be back if in the area, but it isn't my favorite Malaysian restaurant. read more

Had the Belachan Vermicelli, which included Rice Vermicelli, Bean Sprout, Chives, Egg, Belachan Sauce, Chicken, and an extra serving of the vermicelli for a dollar more...the entire dish was still under $15! It was very tasty, filling, and definitely something I am going to have many, many times over. Cannot recommend enough. The restaurant itself is quite good to eat at...nice indoor table seating, and its usually always pretty packed during lunch hours. The food here is delicious. Service is great and the ambiance is what you would expect. Don't order the beef rendang if you're hungry. The portion sizes are laughable. About 3-4 bite-sized cubes if ordering a dinner plate dish. It didn't get much better when I ordered the main dish for takeout. The container has a 60/40 split. About 6-7 bite-sized cubes of beef, while the 40% split was simply some cucumber slices and parsley. The flavor and tenderness however is top tier. Skip the Roti Paratha, the sauce is watered down and the pastry is non-traditional. It is thick battered and unlike the flakey layered crepe that is the original. Mee Goreng and Ha Mee are both delicious and a standard portion. Also tried the Red chicken curry, however, the chicken was sparse and there was a lot of filler like tomatoes, potatoes, and tofu. Also used chicken breast which made it a bit chewy. Another time I tried the tofu rendang and again it was about half potatoes and half tofu. Chicken Satay is also non-traditional. Not served on a skewer and lacks the smokey flavor. I just get the impression they are skipping out on the protein to cut costs however the slightly above average pricing doesn't reflect the portions I would expect. read more

Mingala is a great choice for lunch in Fremont! We had a late lunch around 3, so it was quiet but there were still two other groups dining in. The service was attentive and they were happy to answer any questions we had about the menu (serving size, spiciness, etc.). Burmese and Malaysian food don't get enough hype but if you know, you know that you always have to get the tea leaf salad and something to share. We got the Curry Seafood Claypot to share between two people, but had enough leftovers for two meals. They did not skimp on the seafood and the vegetables were cooked well too! The eggplant in the claypot was first fried so it was the perfect texture. I also got a Malaysian Iced Coffee, and they asked for sweetness level preference which I appreciated. It looked like most of the staff were on their breaks since it was slow, so we appreciated them letting us stay and catch up for a while and eat slowly. If you're ever in Fremont and need to have a late lunch/early dinner, I definitely recommend Mingala! read more
