Tucked away in a quiet old plaza, apparently this place has been here for years but I've never heard of it. I don't really trek out to this part of Pleasant Hill but I was pretty pleased with my boyfriends recommendation. Not many Chinese restaurants that I would frequent but if Chinese is an option for the day, this is the spot I prefer going to. The staff is nice and the menu has good variety and they have lunch specials ($6.50-8.25) which includes a good portion of an entree, 1 egg roll and rice(plain or fried rice). You can upgrade to brown rice for $1. Their crispy ginger chicken is hella good and if you don't see something on their lunch specials but you see it somewhere else on the menu, you can ask if you can get that item as part of the lunch special. Lots of seating available and they also have family style tables with a lazy Susan. Place is clean and the service is quick. read more

Ming's has been our go to place for great Chinese food for a lot of years. The pandemic has hit them pretty hard and they haven't been able to reopen to indoor dining because they can't find consistent help. They are still open for takeout and if you have never tried them I would recommend it. Our favorites are General Chicken, Beef with vegetables, Mu Shu Pork, sweet and sour shrimp and BBQ pork chow mein. My son loves their beef chow fun too. read more

Was surprised to hear that last year Michelin gave a star in its lower priced category to a Chinese restaurant in Berkeley that we find serves oily and overpriced food! Ming's is a much better place, with tender meats, veggies perfectly cooked--crisp but not tough, and great sauces. Their moo shu is the best we've ever had. On top of that, service is as quick as the crowd will allow and efficient and Ming is always on hand to be sure everyone is happy. They are so sweet here, and the food is without a doubt 100% freshly made! The fried rice was perfect, and the meat was excellently cooked and flavorful. Do not come here! Go across the street to Dragon's Springs if you have to. The food isn't that good for an excuse for their terrible service. Ordered for take out and the man on the phone asked me when do I want my order made, I said " as soon as you can make it, 20 mins???" And he preceded to tell me "well, you tell me when you want it". This is a take out order obviously, so as soon as you can make it. Most places will tell you ur total and how long your order will take. I've been here twice for lunch. On my most recent visit, service was super slow, and it took about 25 minutes for my order to come out. In fact, we ordered lunch for one of my co-workers about 15 minutes after everyone at my table placed their order and his order came out first, go figure! Ming is the best. One time he went out of his way to stop me from leaving when it was so busy! (I ordered to go and wasn't leaving) I will never forget that. A man that really cares about about his business. That being said, the food is super consistent and good as well. Classic Chinese restaurant flavor. Orange chicken. Broccoli with beef. Vegetable fried rice. Honey walnut prawn (shrimp). One thing that was surprising was the Ming's crispy ginger chicken! Went there today with my kids because my little guy was craving for Chinese food, and Mings is the only place decent enough to eat at. The food is alright. I ordered their Mongolian beef with chow mein and asked for tea with my meal. I had asked them twice to get it and when they finally brought it, I was appalled of how nasty the tea pot is. One guy picking up a large to go order tipped and still nothing. If he's the owner, I'd rather patronize another spot that is appreciative. Ming's is not bad, not bad at all. I'm pleased to have found another decent Chinese joint in our neighborhood (Ming's is located in the TJ Max plaza in Pleasant Hill). Super friendly waiters brought our piping hot $6 lunch specials. What's not to like? Singapore fried rice noodles, my favorite, were cooked well -- though there was an unneccesary preponderance of onions. My sons' Broccoli Beef and Sweet and Sour Pork lunch specials went over very well (with more than sufficient amount of left overs for school lunches), and my husband enjoyed his as well (and I cannot for the life of me remember what he ordered). All the lunches came with hot & sour soup and an egg roll (even mine that wasn't a lunch special). Yep, we shall be back. I've been following the reviews for this restaurant for a long time since it barely has any ratings below 4 stars. I have been intrigued by their impeccable reputation in which they call themselves, "excellent Chinese restaurant" for their superior culinary talents and service. So last night I brought my brother here to celebrate his birthday and since he is more of an avid consumer of Chinese cuisine than I am, I made sure to pick the highest rated Chinese restaurant in the entire Bay Area as a part of his birthday present. This restaurant has a nice mix of ambiance that encompasses a front entrance fish tank and family style seating to juxtapose a trendy looking bar with a giant plasma TV to the side. Service was attentive and during the time of ordering the owner of the restaurant assured us that our choices were "very good". Here's what we ordered: Honey walnut prawns ($10.95): Instead of lightly battered, this dish was deep fried layered with thick gooey mayo--greasier than expected. It was definitely not what I'm used to and the texture was off due to a lack of a thin crispy outer layer that could have otherwise be done with some fine wok skills. Chicken with mixed vegetables ($7.25): Although the restaurant claims to be skimping on salt as their promo for healthier eating, this dish had a good amount of oyster sauce that typically comes with lots of sodium. The oyster sauce in my home has 415 mg per table spoon, not sure about theirs. To their credit, the chicken pieces were tender and vegetables were fresh and diverse. It was a decent straight away stir fry and nothing earth shattering. Deluxe pan-fried noodles ($6.25 + $1.25 extra for egg noodles): With the entire noodle deep fried to look like instant noodles with a few brunt spots, this dish was served with a combination of beef, chicken, shrimps and vegetables that were oddly dry stir fried. With insufficient amount of sauce, we had a hard time breaking the noodles apart and mixing the ingredients was daunting without causing things to constantly fall out of our plate. The taste was okay but the sauce in which it was used was unexpectedly different from the Cantonese traditions I've experienced. To me, the food was definitely 3 stars similar to King Dong or Little Hong Kong Cafe. It was no better than Sam Woo, Great China, Hop Li, Hop Woo, or Capitol Restaurant--just to name a few. What really upsets me was that our chicken and noodle dishes were almost identical with the exceptions of two ingredients. Both dishes came with the same sauce for the baseline taste and identical combination of vegetables and chicken stir fry. I was very upset by that since we could have tried other dishes had we known in advance that they were going to be repetitive. So we pointed these observations to the first server who laughed it off and dismissed it by pointing to the noodles as the reason for why they were different, "They are different dishes, different ingredient" he said. Later, when the owner of the restaurant came by to check on us, I pointed to him that we should have been informed during the time we were ordering that these two dishes were going to be too similar, his response was, "Oh, good". Knowing that I was peeved, he decided to handle the payment with my brother even though I was the one who handed over my credit card. He also decided to tell my brother separately that they have lots of customers who do takeouts and tonight's lackluster patronage was unusual. I felt so patronized at that point I couldn't wait to leave. In the end, I felt bad for my brother since we could have gone to a much better place that was closer to our areas. After researching the best Chinese restaurants in Pleasant Hill, Mings I believe, was # 1 that popped up and after reading all the great reviews, I stirred up a little appetite for this place. I arrived there just when they opened and was greeted with a warm and welcoming smile.The place is immaculately clean, well decorated and even the bathroom was nice. So after hearing all the rave reviews over there Crispy Ginger Chicken, it sounded like my kind of dish.So I went ahead and ordered the lunch special of the Crispy Ginger Chicken which comes with soup of the day an egg roll and your choice of either fried rice,white or even brown rice, I ended up substituting the rice for steamed vegetables, witch is great because alot of place s don't do that and he recommended it, Love's that!! Everything to the soup, my eggroll,and my main dish were FANTASTIC!!!!The soup was light and flavorful and left no bad after taste which some place do,eggroll was crisp fresh and delightful and of course the Ginger Chicken was mouth watering delicious. I am completely disappointed. Not only with the food but the customer service. The deliverer instantly stuck his hand out for the money, when I paid he practically tossed the food out at me and waited as if he had earned a tip...and rolled his eyes at me when I told him to have a good rest of the day. Another mark down in my books...if you're going to charge me for something, make sure I get what I paid for. Cheap food or not. When I called them to see it I could have my food corrected, the teller was very unhelpful and seemed to be to preoccupied to care...she told me she would calm me back when the driver showed up...they had to make sure I wasn't "lying". First off, you never tell a customer that, second off...how would the driver know? Is he peaking into my food?! Disgusting...Id rather not know that. I waited an hour for her to call me back before I gave up and called. There was nothing they could do for me, I paid for food and they messed up everything...I don't eat beef, I refuse to...so I basically just paid 30 dollars for pot stickers, Egg Rolls, and a coke. The egg rolls weren't cooked all the way through, and the pot stickers were burnt and blackened on some. I tried the Chow Mien (before realizing it was beef) and it was blan and oily...I tried to ignore it, then I tasted the beef. I am not one to completely judge a place by one experience, I will try again...but actually go into the store, so they can't tell me I was lying about my food. I have traveled the world enjoying Chinese food in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, London, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.,...You get the picture. This was my first visit to Ming's. One of my running/hiking friends and I have decided to go to different restaurants this year when we get together rather than just the same sushi restaurants. We ordered the pot stickers, tomato beef chow mein, salt and pepper chicken, and a side of brown rice. All very good and generous servings. We both had a glass of the house Cab and the total was about $31. We both took home left overs for our lunch today. No MSG is used, so that is a bonus and you can request that your food be prepared dry wok style (no oil). Great value, excellent food, and good service. I'll be back. read more

Again, my "five-star standards" dictate a uber-high level of repeated service. And Ming's have earned the venerated fifth star! Many moons ago, there was a great Chinese restaurant located in the Willows Shopping Center in Concord (Far East Garden?). As an employee of a nearby store, I would frequently lunch there with friends and family, get their take-out, and so forth. Everything there was beautiful - in sight and in taste. But alas - one day, they closed without warning (to me, at least!), and I was left forlorn - without the Oriental ambrosia, better known as Crispy Ginger Chicken... I was bordering on pursuing an multi-national Interpol man-hunt for the chef of this heady dish. However, life got in the way, and the trail faded and was slowly buried in time. Fast-forward to about a year ago. I was pressed into selecting a evening meal destination with one of my family when I decided to pick up the search for Crispy Ginger goodness. This website, Yelp!, provided the necessary clues to transform my culinary cold case into Crispy Ginger bliss. Now, I state the following as a cardinal rule: in my experience, Crispy Ginger goodness (I have grown past the chicken, and moved on to their prawns - a ten-fold better pairing, IMHO) is at its fineness when served on their dining room. The magic is not near the same when enjoyed via take-out or delivery. I don't care where you are from - this is the best Chinese food you will ever enjoy, period. Portion size is respectable (although I always want more), the food is consistently good, and the service prompt and well-mannered. A Tale of Two Chinese Restaurants: Ming's and Sichuan Fortune House I decided on Ming's based on it's Yelp reviews. Mistake. Again. People on Yelp seem rather undiscriminating, but I get it. If you want AMERICAN faux Chinese food, this is probably a good choice. If you want CHINESE Chinese food, avoid this place entirely. I ordered the pot stickers and Kung Pao shrimp, a litmus dish for Szechuan cooking. The pot stickers were too big, too heavy, too browned, and served without any dipping sauce. I made my own from the chili oil, soy sauce and rice vinegar at my table, but overall, no better than 2 stars. Then the shrimp. A complete FAIL. Kung Pao is a wonderful and simple dish based on hoisin sweetness and intense heat from dried red chili's browned in oil that is then used to cook the green onions and the shrimp, a rich, slightly sweet sauce, and then previously cooked peanuts added to complete the dish. When done well, as in Hu's in West LA, or my kitchen, it is sort of magical. Ming's "kung pao" was a miserable imposter, with broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, bamboo shoots, and a completely bland brown, thin sauce. Not a chili or green onion in sight! It seemed like they thought adding peanuts was all that Kung Pao required. It was closer to Cantonese than anything Szechuan. I expressed my extreme disappointment to my server, who was surly, very hard to flag down, and the answer was that this was what Ming's called "kung pao". I was billed for the dish, and no attempt was made to satisfy a very disgruntled customer. One star is too kind for this food and this service. Boo on Ming's. Why a tale of TWO restaurants? Good food but the owner is EXTREMELY RUDE. We use to dine at Mings often but, started to try different places in the surrounding area because we couldn't stand how rude the staff and owner were. We tried the restaurant again after about a year and nothing has changed. $60.00 for food with extremely RUDE service isn't worth it! For 60.00 bucks I expect exceptional service! To start off my first review on yelp my girlfriend and I were craving chinese food so we got on yelp and saw that this place got good reviews so we decided to try it out. We called in for take out and ordered the house special fried rice, hot and sour soup, crispy ginger chicken and the bbq pork with string beans. We were pretty surprised on how big the portions of food there was that we ordered. Hot and sour soup tasted very plain..we had to add soy souce to fix the taste and it wasnt really hot nor sour..wasnt the greatest but thats the first time ive had peas, carrots and prawns mixed in hot and sour soup..oh btw our order of soup only had 2 shrimp in it.. Fried rice was good..had a good amount of beef but we only got 2 pieces of chicken in it. Then theres the crispy ginger chicken. They put the sauce in seperate container which i prefer. chicken wasnt that crispy but it wasnt oily. the sauce was sweet and had a little bit of that ginger taste to it. The bad was the bbq pork and string beans. The beans were soggy and didnt look fresh and the pork was dry and had no taste..worst of all my GF was spooning out some on her plate and found a piece of blonde hair in the container which pretty much cut off her appetite and most of mine. I came in and asked the front lady twice about my food I've been waiting for, for over 25 minutes. She completely blew me off. Then when I came up again to get a status she stayed on the phone and rolled her eyes and pointed me to sit down. Then after she got off the phone she still didn't attend me. There for I had to bring my issue up to some one else. I'm sorry but I work as an account executive and doing so I have to deal with customers all the time. On my good or bad days. It doesn't matter. You attend to your customers, and hope they're happy with your services because if not then you may grow a horrible reputation like the one I'm seeing as I go down the comments. I'm not the first to say it. I just hope maybe you can come to your realization to put your customers feelings first, and save your own for when you get back home. AMAZING! I have missed Ming's SO Much! I used to live in the East Bay and ate here on a regular basis because the food is GREAT and the prices are LOW. IF you can, try to make it here for lunch. They have a wonderful lunch special with a large assortment of items. Basically, you pick your protein(i ordered their Crispy ginger prawns for $5.95) and with that I get hot and sour soup, rice and either an egg roll or a fried won ton. You can sub the white rice for chow mein or fried rice for a dollar. The portions are huge(I can eat and had to take mine home). WHAT A SMOKING DEAL! The hot and sour soup is really delicious and I could just eat a huge bowl of that. The veggie chow mein is simple but has great flavor and their main dishes are exceptional. I wish i could find a place this good in SF(i am on the hunt for a good delivery Chinese place and have yet to find one) On a side note, they do deliver, have a nice size resturaunt for dine-in patrons and are just above and beyond nice :) I guess i'll just need to drive to Pleasant Hill to get my Chinese food fix. read more

On busy days, he seems to get overly stressed, and he can have a biting presumptuous arrogance.
