Located in the same strip as Midtown Family Medicine and Guava Lamp few shops away from Subway, Mint Thai Kitchen is a true gem. I can't remember the name of the place that used to be here before, but it was also a Thai place. And Mint Thai - IMO is a serious upgrade. I have not been here during lunch but I imagine that's when they have some serious traffic. I came here during dinner because I read Cuong T's review about how amazing their noodles are. Strangely enough we only ordered pad thai and I don't think that was what he meant by noodle dishes LOL. We had a shrimp dish for the appetizer that came out in a plate with fried round disks of fried crispy nothings and the shrimp was in between each one. The sauce that came with it was so much better than any dipping sauce that comes out with fried shrimp. The pad thai was pretty phenomenal and I would order it again. It was better than your standard fare but not like the type that you would have in Pattaya. The papaya salad thankfully was not fire which I am usually scared to order. Actually, it was quite delicious and just writing the review is making me want it more, more, more (sing it like Kylie Minogue). Pad Gai Tod - their crispy chicken was like an inspiration from Panda Express's orange chicken minus the orange nasty stickiness. It's garlicky and has a dash of green onion chopped on top. They let you adjust the heat level in your food. We got mild and spicy in several different dishes and they all seemed to be pretty weak to me. And I do not do spice well. That left me a little upset. I definitely can't wait until I go back to try their fish/soup dumplings/soup/more noodles!!! I was excited to try Mint Thai cause of the high reviews but was a bit undecided about the dishes: *Xiao Long Bao aka Mini Buns aka Soup Dumplings - Okay so soup dumplings are not a Thai thing, they are usually a Taiwanese dish. We saw them here and I had to try them and I was pleasantly surprised. They were soupy! As much so as the soupiest ones I've tried in Houston thus far. I liked the flavor but the bf thought the wrap/skin was a bit thick comparatively. 4/5 *Papaya Salad - the bf loved this dish cause it was refreshing and so limey! I agreed, it was very tart and had some weird spices in it that didn't make it taste like the traditional papaya salad. He said Mexican spice - I'm just unsure what to make of it. The papaya was a bit on the thicker side and the sauce was just a no for me. 1/5 *Crispy Chicken - the flavors were good and the chicken was crispy. I thought they were a bit too salty. We ordered mild and both our dishes came out flaming hot (so hot that your mouth burns and you can't taste the actual dish, as you can see by the red chili flakes in the photos). 3/5 *Phad See Eww - I liked the flavors in this dish a lot, especially because there was a smokiness that is hard to get in the dish because it requires the right about of high heat but not enough to overcook your noodles. Well, this dish had the flavor but the noodles were definitely overcooked cause they were small gooey bits and not the long thick strands that I like. The chinese broccoli was also weird because it contained the fiberous strands and were hard to chew and break up. I ended up chewing and taking out the fibers cause I couldn't eat it. I think this is because they cut them too close to the inedible stalk or they just bought a bad batch that was too old. 3/5 The interior of this place is clean, service is quick and I wish I could say I loved the experience and the food but there are way too many Thai places out there to come back. We also ordered the coconut ice cream for dessert and we were wondering why it was so icy and not creamy. We both agreed it tasted like a mixture of coconut milk that was frozen - it contained some yellow stuff and green stuff in the mixture (I'm guessing the yellow was corn kernels and the green tasted a bit like plastic - I couldn't guess what it was but the flavors reminded me of pandan or cassava). Ordered the BEEF GANG KIEW WAN (GREEN CURRY) I asked for 5- Very Spicy (Thai Hot) and it barely had a kick. Maybe the server didn't hear me when I ordered. I asked for some kind of spicy sauce and she gave me sambal, which is like a sour/spicy chili paste. It just didn't quite go with the curry. FOOD: I tried the Pad Kee Mao, Garlic Pepper with beef, and soup dumplings (Xiaolongbao). The Pad Kee Mao and Garlic Pepper dishes were delicious, but not the most amazing I've ever had. If you're a spice lover with a considerable spice tolerance, I found level 4 to be perfect. The soup dumplings were super (souper?) appetizing! They had a great chewy texture on the outside and a perfectly soupy/meat filling on the inside. They were definitely one of the better soup dumpling dishes I've tasted in Houston. Overall a really good Thai place in the area. They have mostly Thai food (which is what I'd stick with) and a few others. We had the eggplant basil dish with tofu and the soup dumplings. The eggplant basil was excellent and it was the right level of spice - I ordered the hottest they offer. The Thai dishes are pretty good here, but as for the spice, it was a miss for me. I wanted something spicy hot, but it didn't meet my expectations when I was ordering a Pad Thai dish with level 5 (Thai Hot). My family and I over ordered when we came to dine in for dinner. We had larb, pad thai, crab fried rice, pad see ewe, and my sister ordered some soup. The food was good! I didn't really have anything bad to say. I LOVE THIS PLACE! It's pretty small, but I've never had an issue getting sat right away. Parking is plentiful, but the actual spots themselves are a little small- weirdly. So even though there's a lot of spots, if someone's parked crookedly, it can still be stressful. We are always greeted and sat right away. Lunch special is worth it. They charge based on what meats you get, there's a whole menu of actual dishes. Pad thai, Pad see ewe, all sorts of fried rices and curries. I just spend about 11 bucks for lunch. You get a soup and an eggroll with your meal. I'm a basic pad thai girl- and even though I used to say that you can't really mess pad thai up- you can. This place does it justice. The spice levels are legitimate, and not americanized. Go ahead and order a 3 and that's enough for most people. I get 6 (yes, out of five) at Thai cottage and I'm good with a 4 here. The sauce they put on their pad thai was delicious, a perfect blend of spicy and sweet. And definitely there. It was a little sticky, but that's how I know it's good. Meat portions are good. I didn't have to ask for more limes because the flavoring is all there. Their Pad See Ewe is bomb too. Chinese broccoli, thick flat noodles, in brown sauce. That's my second go to- and I know that makes me even more basic. There's a little bit of a black peppery kick which I liked. Their Tom Yum soup is huge for a single portion. Share it if you got it as an appetizer, or else there'll be no room for your actual food. Spice level was really good on this too, my nose was running the whole time. Service was prompt. My water was never empty. Thai tea was aite. I'd probably pass on that. If you're getting tired of the long lines at Thai Gourmet, give Mint Thai a try. This is a nice little place for Thai lunch (takeout)! Mint Thai has delicious lunch specials--which is the dish of choice + a salad and vegetable egg roll (+ dressing and dipping sauce for the egg roll). I ordered their Pad Kee Mao with chicken for lunch one weekday; the order was ready for pickup within 15 minutes of me ordering it. This is relevant for COVID times, but the meal was packaged very well and I was greeted by an employee wearing a mask. The food was delicious!! Food: 4/5 The chicken skewers appetizer was really tasty- the chicken itself had great flavor and was grilled beautifully such that it retained much of its juices. The flavor was complimented by peanut sauce that accompanied it. I ordered the combination pad Thai (no shrimp) with maximum level 5 spiciness. The pad Thai tasted amazing, but I barely felt any of the heat. They might have messed it up or their heat ratings are more geared towards the masses. Service: 4/5 The usual. Service was decent, no complaints. Price: 3.5/5 Four chicken skewers was a $7-8 appetizer. It seemed slightly steeper than I would have imagined. The pad Thai was a bit over $12 and the portion size was alright. I felt for that price they could have afforded to provide more noodles or more protein. Pretty tasty Thai place! I got the pad woonsen with pork which is stir-fried glass noodles with egg, cabbage, onions, baby corn, and tomatoes. It was super flavorful and I really enjoyed it. We went on late on a Friday night and there was only one table full , the rest of the restaurant was empty, which I was pretty surprised about. The service was good and the food came out pretty fast. This location is very inconsistent compared to the one in Willowbrook. I paid $14 for "curry shrimp" to go. There were exactly 4 small shrimp, 3 potatoes and about 3 carrots swimming in lots of watery broth. The shrimp had a strange taste and one had some suspicious black stuff on it. They were not deveined which was unappetizing. I reported this to the restaurant and they offered to remake the dish another time but honestly it's not worth it. Such a great Thai Food place for the price! Came in for an early dinner since this is one of the few good Thai places in the area that doesn't close in that common 2-5pm window, and was seated right away. It's a little on the quiet side in here so don't expect huge crowds and background noise. We started with a chicken satay appetizer which was excellent! The chicken was tender and the peanut sauce had a little bit of spice to it. The chicken Pad See Ew and chicken Pad Thai was delicious. They are generous with their chicken here and with their overall portions as well. The food came out quick and our server was very nice. They share their parking with the other businesses in the complex, but wasn't a problem at all. Will definitely be back! read more
