I am a fan of moqueca and i will say, theirs is legit. extremely tasty & i highly recommend it. The dinosaur looking short-rib is EXCELLENT. I am a fan of fatty bits (it also adds flavour to the sauce) and the beef was shredding/cutting soft w the yucca pure, it was VERY TASTY. the pitchers of caipirinhas crack me up and they are good. strong (for me). sweet for me. i like it sweet. The appetizer mix w mini beef empanada (YES), a lamb type kefta (YES), mini empanada cheese (YES), a fried ball of shredded reddish chicken (YES), the fried cheese ball that felt like a fried mochi was ok...but everything else was fantastic. I didn't try other main dishes, but judging by their food I would easily come back and try other dishes EARLIER. I get it people like to party & they party hard...the only down side was that the space if tight and can get loud and bumpy. My mistake to come a little late (8:30p), I'll show up at 4p for an early bird dinner. I feel like a senior citizen afterall. This establishment has been here for YEARS. I stopped in this place for a drink one weekend night and loved the vibe. Good music, lots of people. I ordered a Guarana. The bartender was pretty friendly and gave us free cachaca shots, too. However... I went back to try dinner and was really disappointed. As mentioned in many reviews, the food is severely overpriced. Total rip off (and they include a "suggested gratuity" in the final price for a party of 2...?). My mom is from Brazil, and I grew up having Brazilian food in Kearny/Newark over in Jersey all the time. I was so excited to have some pasteis de carne and pao de queijo. The pasteis were pretty unremarkable. The beef had no flavor. The pao de queijo was fine, but how do you mess that up? We shared the picanha with onions for dinner. For $30, I was unimpressed. The vinaigrette was alright. If I find myself near this place when they're playing some live music, I might drop in for a drink and some pao de queijo. Came here on a Sunday evening (last Sunday as a matter of fact) for a friend's Bday. When we arrived the place was quite crowded (was about 6pm) and there was reggae music playing. This place isn't large but they do have a full bar, some inside tables and a small balcony off the side. The vibe was really cool and there was a ton of energy here! They later brought out a live band to play spanish music (south american, latin american etc) and it was really great! THe food and drinks here are pricey, so be forewarned (I think like $50 for a pitcher of capirinha's sp?) I'd go back for the music for sure and the atmosphere... but I'll stick to beer. Oh and 1 note... the bartender, while very nice, was tough at times to get attention to place an order. He also put in gratuity in my bill when it wasn't stated that they would. He explained that he was doing it because people weren't tipping him well. While I can understand frustration if he isn't getting what he thinks he should, he also shouldn't be taking liberties to just tip himself! I let it go... we were having fun... I didn't want to make a big deal, but if that isn't their policy then I think it's wrong that he's trying to guarantee his own tip. Maybe the service isn't great to others.... slow service perhaps? When we asked her to come back so they could order it was clear she hated us. As more people came it got a little more obscene in how difficult & unpleasant things were getting. A few of the other staff members were nice and seems apologetic, when we tried ordering through another waiter who was much nicer - she had a fit and let everyone know that our party was hers. Great. Honestly both times I went to MF, the crowd was unremarkable- it was neither atrociously NJ trash/Juicy wearers (as some have mentioned) nor was it filled with ultra cool ethnic- beaty artisan Manhattan-haters from Brooklyn (as Pitu mentions). I will say that the music was way too f*cking* loud for a Sunday at 5pm for cocktails and convo and the DJ was really annoying and invading our space. That being said, I neither hated it or loved it. The long braid- headed bartender was nice enough. Caprihinas were good and strong. I didn't eat more than some chicken bit appetizer, which was fine but unmemorable. The food coming out around me looked interesting, but not compelling. To put it in perspective for the discerning, quality seeking, drinking/culinary enthusiast....in my opinion, Miss Favela is on the same level as Radegast Beer Garden down the street; themed and gimmicky. Awful service, literally had to get up and grab a carafe of water from the bar despite having "outdoor table service" because the waitress (the pseudo hippy one w/ the long hair) kept forgetting that we were thirsty. 2. The bill says "suggested gratuity: (amount)", which I normally appreciate. However don't fret, Miss Favela takes it upon itself to assume you want to leave that specific amount thus they include it in the bill without telling you. Additionally, they round up. My bill was $55.25 and I ended up receiving $4 after handing over $60. Oh and it's cash only. 5. Finally, it appears they'll try and push you out from the outdoor seating area if a larger group shows up and wants to sit outside. The couple next to us was told to move to the bar even after they had ordered. Overall people, especially tourists, will continue going here because it's "exotic" and its really the only Brazilian place in Williamsburg. Apparently, the music is good on Sundays. Went there for brunch with a large party of Brazilians celebrating bday. Caipirinha is strong just like how it's suppose to be in Brazil. We ordered rounds of pitchers and ended up really drunk by 3pm. Witness the bartender pouring down 3 bottle of cachaça at once by making one pitcher. Food is delicious and big portion. Early brunch there was live band playing Basso Nova music. As the lunch progress, it changes to more lively Samba music. People dancing while brunching, you will only see this in NY, lol. read more

Turns out it was $50.00. When I got the bill (I ordered a $9.00 order of pão de queijo, $31.00 order of feijoada for 2, and a surprisingly $50.00 pitcher of caipirinhas), I thought it was in reais! Really didn't expect to spend that much. Very pricey for the quality of food you get and its over-packed ambiance. The place is probably best for a couple of beers, and listening to samba, pagode, or forro (there isn't any real room to dance either) with a large group of friends that can split the bill. This review is solely for Miss Favela's lunch special, and I guess, their patio. There are a few things that attracted me to Miss Favela the first time I decided to try their food. The first being it is literally connect to my studio where I work everyday. So they've got that going for them. The second is that it always smells good when I pass on my way into the office in the morning/noon time. And the third is a very attractive, $8 lunch special. This great deal gets you a choice of Steak, fried fish, or chicken, rice, beans, and greens. This is an absolutely absurd amount of great food for the small sum they require you pay. And the best part is the food rocks. A group of friends and I go there once a week so we can sit on their patio and have a fresh beverage to start what usually turns into a lazy afternoon and then, a messy night great night. Seriously though, give Miss Favela a shot. If you don't like it for some reason you're only out 8 bucks and at least you got to watch some futbol during lunch. As a side note; when I leave work late on a Friday night this place is packed with really good looking people dancing like they know what they are doing. Someday I'll join the fun, but only when I can grow a beard, own a linen suit, and have a Brazilian model girlfriend. read more

This really deserves a 2.5 stars. Went there on Saturday night at around 8:30pm for a friend's birthday party. Ambiance: Love the way the place is decorated; very lively. During dinner the crowd was mainly late-early 30s. During the lounge part, much younger crowd came in. We met a group of young girls that were from Brazil and were friendly but as the night went by, they just became super drunk, to the point the bouncer told them to keep it down. Service: For the most part the waiters were nice but then two people in our party indicated that they would be leaving early and therefore not going to order dinner and just have drinks. They were informed that they HAD to spend at least $20 in food to remain at the table (not cool at all). The bartenders were super friendly and attentive. Food: Like many others mentioned, the food was okay, I've had better Brazilian. I had the steak with the broccoli rice. The steak didn't taste like much; it was juicy but tasteless (it tasted more like an American steak). We also had a salad with hearts of palm which was quite good. We had the quibe which is something we Dominicans eat as well. I was pleasantly surprised to find out Brazilians eat it too. It was really good and tasty. The prices were a little bit too high for the quality of the food. Drinks: We had pitchers of caipirinha which was quite strong and tasty. Music: The music was 90% Brazilian and lots of people were dancing. The DJ was kind of rude when my friends requested music. I was with a party for dinner and drinks and we were often interrupted by strange creepy men, harassing us for a dance and kissing up on our hands and necks with their gross slimey stinky lips. YUCK. There is no AC in this place, while i want to eat the delicious food from brazil i don't want to feel like I'm dying from heat stroke in brazil. There were some crusty ceiling fans that did not really cool me. The whole decor is like "dingy rustic brazilian bar" exactly like what maybe a favela bar (slums of brazil) might be like. The tables and chairs are rusty looking, I'm sure chosen for the decor or cheapness ...whatever the case these chairs are crazy uncomfortable my rear end was begging for mercy. The table actually will dent if you lean or put to much pressure on it, so if you move your arms your plate and cups will all bounce when the table pops back from the pressure. There are two bathrooms near the back and the ATM (which you will need) is inside the bathroom. At the bottom of the menu you will see a comment saying each person must spend 20 dollars to stay at the table. This didn't bug me but maybe some of you will think its interesting. All the appetizers range from $8-15 and the entrees between $20 + , I ordered the fresh lemonade which they create with limes instead of lemons. Now for the food the food by itself deserves 4 stars the 3 stars are really because of how uncomfortable the place was. The meat platter for 2 comes with 6 meat selections, fries with peppers, rice and black beans. This platter was delicious, it was perfect for two if your on a date. The appetizer I had was the beef croquettes, they come in a basket with limes on the side. They were super yummy I believe there were about a total of 8 in the basket. By the time we finished devouring everything we were ready to go, the chairs are so bad I rather stand. When I received the bill like many other yelpers have found they add in what they think is an "ideal" tip or like she wrote on the check "suggested tip" which was about 17 dollars. I didn't feel like the waitress did much in fact the guys who cleaned up the table and brought out the food did way more than she did. But for the amount spent I just paid it, I'm wondering though, what if someone refuses to pay the suggested tip. I have been to miss favela a few times and I have to say I have never left feeling like I had a good experience. The waiters are not bad, they just follow orders coming from management. Their management is terrible and so is the food and their drinks: - if a costumer reserves a table it is mandatory to order an entrée; you can't order a bunch of appetizers instead if you would want it that way. That is very limiting. - the caipirinhas cost $11 and they either are way too strong or way too sweet - the tables are beyond worn out and the space has no ventilation. My friends and I order the chicken appetizer and it looked great on the outside but the chicken had no flavor and of felt as though as we were eating some sort of raw chicken that was seared for a bit to look appetizing. I bet if you go to any bar at a real favela you will find better and cheaper food. If you are looking for a place with good music and good food this is not it. If you want to just dance and have a good time with you friends be prepared to sweat a lot and spend a lot of money on drinks that are not that flavorful. read more

The staff is nice and the food is nice. But, the staff also had no idea what to do when I was burned by a heatet tube near my seat. My back arm has a dark burn and im still treating it. Thankfully, my friend helped place ointment on it and to their credit, after I asked, they gave me ointment too. However, they were sort of non chalant. I dont blame them but the burn did hurt and it could scar. In a dark area, the tube was painted in the same color scheme as the walls. They should label and arrange the seating or block access or paint it a different color, like red or white, instead of the current scheme. read more
