Nice and fun Brazilian place. It's very colorful and there's usually live music. The plates are not cheap, but they are very big and delicious. While the food was good it wasn't worth nearly $250 for 6 people. This is definately the worst experience and service I have had in NYC. A group of 13 friends and I came super excited about the food and ambiance. Half of our friends arrived early and grabbed a table, since the place was a bit busy the rest of us decided to take a separate table to avoid the wait. This became such a hassle because we were told by the waitress we could only sit if we each bought an entree, only 3 of us wanted a full entree and the other 3 wanted appetizers and drinks. While I was working an evening shift at a restaurant in mid-town, 4 of my close friends came here for a nice dinner out. we live in south Williamsburg and they decided to just walk around one night and try to find a place they had never been to before. They came across this place, and apparently had a wonderful time. They spoke highly of the atmosphere, music, and crowd. My roommate even made a couple friends that night with strangers who she still keeps in touch with. I don't remember them talking about the food that much, however.. it was mostly about how the band was great and everyone in the restaurant got up to dance at one point. Naturally, I was very excited to experience this place for myself. Last week I was finally able to go with a group of friends and was amazed at how different of an experience I had. First of all: the atmosphere is fun. It definitely has a nice look to the place, love the location, and the music was a pleasure. The BIG disappointment came first of all with the food, and second of all with the prices. I got the fried fish balls (i forget which type of fish).... They were WAY too salty. It came in an order of about 4... although I was more than hungry and already with 1 martini on an empty stomach, I couldn't finish the rest. I had my 5 other friends try it, and they all agreed. Of the other dishes on the table, not a single one of us thought our meal was that great. The salmon was too dry, the shrimp too tough, etc. On top of all that, the prices were ridiculous. I have no qualms spending money on a good meal, but most the entrees are all at about $20+, they are small and served like you're at a fish and chips shack on the beach. I was with a good group of friends, however, so my company overshadowed my other complaints and I was still able to enjoy myself. I've heard from many friends that this is a cool spot to check out - unfortunately I waited until the summer ended.. In any case - i got here around 11:30pm - and while i didn't eat, it smelled really good and it appears they serve food until late.. What was cool about this place was that although its in williamsburg, its not overcrowded by hipsters but a pretty diverse, eclectic group of people.... and theres actually a good amount of girls here too! The live band is great - awesome music (a variety of good brazilian tunes) and you can dance wherever you're at. I love love love Brazilian fare (I live in Brazil part of the year) and and its rare to find such authenticity in New York City, much less, Williamsburg?? But that's cool, cuz I live right around the corner. This spot just opened up this week, I was there opening night and went back again last night cuz I just couldn't get enough! The costela (bbq ribs) are falling off the bone delicious, and the picanha (sirloin) is sizzling and succulent. The bobo de camarao (a yummy shrimp sauce dish) is as close to real as it gets. All the sides: couve (collard greens), yucca (same in english), feijao (black beans), linguica (sausage), and camarao olho de alho (shrimp in garlic and oil) are bangin....BANGIN!!!! The salads are refreshing and light, nothing spectacular, but just what you need on a hot, New York night. And the decor is much like a restaurant that I often go to in my neighborhood in Brazil--vibrant, kinda rustic, and fun! The music is loud and lively, and people although sandwiched together at times, are up and dancing in between bites (much like in Brazil). I love this place. The only thing that needs work is the caipirinha. I was so unhappy on several tries and someone just needs to let that fine little hipster bartender know that cute he is, but caipirinha specialist he is NOT. Tell him to add more sugar and more lime and to grind it up rough like he does every night with his lover. Then you'll have a decent caipirinha to go along with this fantastic dining experience! I've been to this place twice so far and I totally LOVE it! Yes, I'm Brazilian and I tried many Brazilians restaurants in NY, NJ, CT, FL... NONE of them comes close to Miss Favela. First of all the décor is very cute and casual. The staff is great and food is AWESOME. I came to this place last October to have a drink with couple of friends, it was a Sunday and they were having live (and very loud) music. Me and my friends ordered a pitcher of Capirinha, some appetizers, few shots and that's all I can remember! I decided to stop by for a Saturday afternoon couple of days ago and it was even BETTER than Sunday. The band was great, playing samba music till 6pm. It was very loud and almost impossible have a normal conversation, so if you wanna chat this is NOT the place to go. There's a minimum consummation for food ($20 / person) if you get a table, which is ok since the food is sooooo good. We had couple of appetizers and the feijoada! Holly caw! What a feijoada! My waitress Juliana was a sweetheart, but apparently everyone on this place is really nice and helpful. The bartenders are fun and the drinks are pretty strong, so don't get upset with the TINY glass they serve your drinks, it will be strong and tasteful! The location is a little off, and is a good walk from the subway, but the overall experience is so good that you will not mind walking a little. I'm definitely going back! After reading a bunch of Yelp reviews before checking this place out, I was really not expecting much. I heard the striped-shirt-blown-out-hair-brigade were going to be in full effect so I tried to prepare myself. To my surprise, the crowd seemed really mixed with a bunch of people from Williamsburg filling up most of the tables. When you shut your eyes, it's almost as if you're not in Williamsburg at all. I couldn't quite figure out if this was a good or bad thing. The music was so incredibly loud that it was hard for everyone at our table to hear each other. On the positive side, we were told at 9:30 on a Saturday that it would be a 40 minute wait and as we stood outside talking about where we might try instead, they called our name. 40 minutes turned into about 3. Our server was helpful and relatively attentive until it came to that dreaded part of the evening where the check is desired by the diners and the server has gotten caught up with his other tables. We sat for about 15 minutes or so waiting for our check, but since we were visiting with a friend, it was okay. I wasn't overly impressed with the food. Especially the prices. Upon the recommendation of the waiter, I tried one of the shrimp dishes and the flavors were good and the portion was totally fair. It didn't wow me though. Could this place be any more fun? We ended up here on a Saturday afternoon on the recommendation of a friend who was trying to meet up with a group that was already inside. We had to wait outside for about 5 minutes because the place was so packed and they were only letting people in when other people stepped out. I didn't know what to expect and what I got was quite the treat! I have to agree with yelpers who say it feels like you're on vacation when you're here. Coming from Miami, I really never expected to find that lively, latin, festive vibe in NYC. I had resigned myself to a life of more "toned down" fun. I'm so happy to declare that I don't need to accept that anymore. This spot is jamming with Samba, filled to the brim with dancing happy people, and ready to intoxicate you, both figuratively and literally. If you're a mellow kind of person that hates anything too rowdy or in your face you're going to hate this place. Luckily I'm neither of these. The pitchers of caipirinha are made by shoveling tons of sugar and limes into a pitcher, muddling it up a bit, adding tons of ice then stuffing two bottles of liquor (vodka?) into the pitcher of ice and just letting them drain until there's no more room. Voila. Get ready to pass out if you're not careful. There are plenty of brazilians singing along to the music and you can't help but dance in place when you're here. It's packed to the brim with people but it REALLY feels like you've been transported to a tropical location and you're on Spring Break again. The food was great. The service was deplorable. Upon entrance, we were greeted by the bouncer who swiftly ID'd us (me and my partner) before entering the establishment. 1. I didn't know you needed to be carded and ID'd to make a table reservation at a restaurant. Subsequently, the host addressed myself and my partner by saying: You must order 1 full course entree per person if you sit down. I found it odd but instead of asking why he felt the need to tell us that before we sat, my partner and I took our seats. Then once we were seated outside--we waited 20 min before we were approached by a waitress. She didn't give us water nor silver wear until we ordered an appetizer. (It's worth noting that this was not customary as other patrons were immediately seated, given water and silverware before placing an order by the same waitress). After we placed our orders, we then were presented with our appetizers, which were delectable. However, we still were not given silverware. Amid sitting outdoors, other patrons began to step into the outdoor dining space and smoking either cigars or cigarettes. The restaurant needs to clearly demarcate where the sidewalk begins and the table service/restaurant parameters end. Moreover, our dinner became even more uncomfortable when two patrons asked to use our table as a shelf for their drinks as they smoked. As we moved into the main course, things worsened--my date had an allergic reaction to their entree. However, the menu did not clearly demarcate what was in the meal--nuts. It wasn't pretty. To make matters worse, instead of giving us a complimentary dinner. We were still charged full price for dinner and given lack luster closing service--I basically had to beg the waitress to package our meal to go as she had for other patrons. The anti blackness at this establishment is beyond egregious. Here are my recommendations: A. If you're black, don't give them your money. You're in for a horrible experience but wonderfully tasting food. B. If you're not black but you care about black lives, don't give them your money, you're feeding into anti blackness. EXPERIENCE: My friend and I wondered next to this place a little before 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. From the street under the Williamsburg Bridge everything looked desolate, and alone stood Miss Favela's on the corner. The place seemed dead on the outside, but the cold forced us in. It was the best stroke of serendipity we had in New York next to Maison Premiere. We were immediately seated beside a couple at the one remaining table. All the customers share combined tables in a real close environment, and the result is what feels like a giant family gathering. Shortly after our arrival the band started with a lead singer that looked like a Brazilian Lenny Kravitz from 1968. After being served, we probably spent over an hour enjoying the music and watching the staff and locals dance between being served. Miss Flavela's is full of energy, and as cheesy as that sounds, I can't describe it any other way. Between the food and the feel of the joint, you can't help but leave smiling. FOOD: Being fans of spicy foods, both of us got open face Brazilian sausage omelets. The omelet comes in its own skillet and seems to have more massive chunks of sausage than eggs, at $10 the meal was a steal. The two of us also took full advantage of their homemade hot sauce which had the perfect blend of burn and flavor. I also had an outstanding cup of coffee that is the best thing I've had outside a home brewed cup in Honduras. I guess I'm one of the few people that had a good time at this place. I went here for a friends birthday party, and the crowd was pretty much all international art students (who were extremely nice and friendly). I didn't try the food, but stuck with Pacifico's and Mojito's all night long. The bartender seemed to like me so she made us some special mojito-like mixed drinks on the house as well (which I can't remember the name of at this point). The DJ showed up and started playing some Brazilian dance music, which didn't quite compare to Bembe, but it was still got us dancing nonetheless. I love this place, so yesterday a few hours after our bad experience with the waitress we came back for great music and food. Everything was going great, it was raining so it wasn't jam packed like it can be at times. Maybe the rain was karma for the waitress who had the outdoor tables who said we needed to move for no reason. I always enjoy the food, ambiance and music here. However, when the bill came my friend had a simple question and a completely different waitress than before snapped at her! I went to Miss Favela on a Friday night looking for some fun with two of my girlfriends. We made a reservation, but when we arrived, they told us they did not see it (later on they emailed apologizing that they made it for the wrong day). So we had to wait, but ordered a $55 pitcher at the bar before we sat down at our table. When we sat down, we were told that we weren't "spending enough money to sit down and eat." It was 10:30pm, there were a ton of open tables, and we were about to order a steak and three appetizers. With the alcohol, we would have definitely ended up spending over $150, and it's CASH ONLY. The waiter and the manager were so unforgiving and insulting, we got up and left the restaurant. I have never in my life been told I was not spending enough money to eat at a restaurant. It did look fun, but I would never go back to a place that treats their customers like that. read more

The tables take up most of the restaurant but there is a small bar but there are rows of people just packed all over the restaurant and It feels like they are on top of you as you are eating. There is no room to move. It took me ten minutes to get to the bathroom from my seat at the table because I had to push through thirty million people. I don't know what this place is trying to be by packing hundreds of people inside but it's not a club and it's not a bar. It's clearly a restaurant so keep it that way. Dear Miss Favela, what I remember of Saturday afternoon was awesome. Thank you, Sincerely, Lama. So now for my review. We arrived for Saturday brunch, and I immediately felt I was back in Puerto Rico on the beach, sipping a Pina Colada for breakfast. The decor is super authentic, and really transports you to a place where you imagine you have danced in the streets to samba somewhere in a dream long ago. Most of the table ordered the sirloin steak with onions while I opted for the traditional bean, pork and sausage stew. We started with one pitcher of caipirinha which soon became 2 and 3 and many many more as the afternoon of dancing, laughing and socializing progressed. It was a phenomenal afternoon and one that I don't think I can repeat soon, but one that I would be thrilled to have happen again once Walid gets back from Uruguay. If you have not done boozy brunch here, you simply have to give it a try-its like a more economical, chilled version of Bagatelle-totally awesome. read more

This place is amazing. After spending a summer in Brazil a few years ago I haven't found anything remotely similar to the food or the ambience that is so pervasive there. Miss Favela nails it. Go on a Saturday afternoon at 2 when the live music starts and settle in. Order the feijoada, which is only available on Saturdays. It's $21, but two people together will struggle to finish it. It's certainly the best I've had in the states, and better than many I had in Brazil. The caipirinhas are wonderful. By the time 4 or 5 rolls around and you've downed a few, everyone is up and dancing, the band joins in, and it's like being in Rio. I had to give this place 4 stars instead of 5 because it is overpriced ($8 caipirinhas work in Manhattan, not Williamsburg), but I'll still go back and burn my money, it's definitely worth it. read more

We went back today to celebrate 3 years knowing each other in the place that made it happen and were disappointed to find the caipirinhas have been replaced with a glass of ice and a tiny bit of cachaca and lime.. Three.three star review. I'm not going to lie. All of the terrible reviews had me wondering just how bad of a service we're going to get. I was wondering who the terrible bartender was or which waitress was the one lying about "Manhattan" laws and etc. But tucked away a tiny bit from the uber gentrified...hell, it's more than gentrified...central center of Williamsburg is Miss Favela, a tiny hole in the wall (for now) location that seems to be the most "ethnic" piece in this neighborhood of millenials and foreigners with money. Walking towards the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon, we saw a ton of people around the location already - inside and out. Thankfully the party we were with already had a reservation. But let's say that it's not really ideal for big parties inside unless it's empty. There's almost no room for error while sitting down as the bar area is packed and towards the back wall a band plays. But even though with the pending bad thoughts about the place my experience wasn't too bad. So the food was actually pretty good. And although I don't know how "authentic" it was, I don't think the prices that they have for their dishes is completely worth it. You would be satisfied by it. But to think that these dishes actually cost over $20.00+ each...well, it's not like this is some Michelin star establishment or even some high end fancy restaurant. No offense to Brazilian food, but the prices were a bit hefty for what they were. The Pao de Queijo was extremely delicious when it was warm, Frango a Milanesa was decent but the chicken cutlet was just a tiny bit dry and Picadinho a Carioca was good, but just like the chicken I wish there was a tiny bit more flavor and juiciness to it. The Caipirinha was fairly strong and if I didn't have to leave early that night who knows, maybe I would have had even more fun. The service itself was not what I envisioned or rather expected from having read the reviews. The food did take a good 30+minutes to arrive though. And our waitress was actually trying to get us out pretty fast. With the amount of time waiting for the food, you would expect having being sat down a little over and hour they wouldn't be rushing us to get out. One of the bus boys was pretty good though. He actually picked up my plate way too early (considering half my cutlet was still on it) and ended up replacing my whole entre with another one. Overall, it was a very cool and chill atmosphere. I'm surprised I haven't found a spot like this in my hood considering there are gillions of Brazilians here. It's also a pretty good walk from any of the trains as well. CASH ONLY.
