This is my second-best restaurant behind Texas roadhouse. Anyway, I decided to purchase some food from this particular restaurant. The service was exceptional, of course, no problems there. However, a gentleman who was wearing a disgusting "Do-Rag" that worked there apparently was assigned to refill the condiments containers. I observed him placing one rubber glove on one hand but none on the other. He then proceeded to touch the condiment containers with both hands. I informed another cashier what he was doing, however on the way out the door he continued this unsanitary action. I glanced around and seen that there was a chipotle, a Firebirds, and several other places along with this Mission BBQ. I have eaten that other locations of Mission BBQ and was happy with the food at each of those locations, so I figured let me give it a shot to this location in Jacksonville, Florida. Heidi who is one of the employees is an absolute ANGEL!! On March 4th 2023 I got into a very rough car accident that was caused by a reckless driver who ran a red light and killed my dog, Heidi just so happen to be there as she was on the way to work at Mission BBQ, she was the first person who checked on me and took my dog to the emergency vet and while they couldn't save his life at least he wasn't in pain since they gave him pain killers and that is all thanks to Heidi!! She is so sweet and her manager also mentioned how amazing she is, also their food is absolutely amazing and the restaurant just feels like home! They have awesome music and I love that they support the military (you would see tons of pictures from different military branches all around the restaurant) please tip them well if you can because they truly deserve it, God bless Heidi, her manger and all the amazing people who work there. Delicious. Finally some decent ******* ribs. - Me, Not Gordon Ramsay. The best I've had in Jacksonville so far, although that's not really a huge achievement. Off the top of my head, at least better than the ribs at Bernt Ends or The Bearded Pig (which surprisingly was not good at all) or any Bono's (naturally). Some people might complain that these have too much fat on them. Those people are wrong. I didn't need to use a knife and there were a number of sauces available. I ended up simply preferring the KC original. Sorta wanted a spicier option, but at least they didn't have one labeled "XXX" that actually tastes like water (looking at you again Bearded Pig). The Mac and cheese was good for like the first couple bites, but later on I did find myself wishing for a slightly wetter consistency again. The green beans have bacon, as is foretold by prophecy. Tonight we celebrated our daughter's 19th bday and she chose Mission BBQ and this location in particular. We were asked why she chose this restaurant to have her bday dinner at. Well, her Papa Steve proudly served in the Navy for 22 years and had been battling cancer for over 1 year. He loved eating at Mission and it was one of the places we could definitely get him to eat and enjoy. This was the last restaurant he ate at until he passed on September 30, 2024. The crew at this location went above and above and beyond anything we expected to make our daughter feel like her Papa was here with her on her bday. They bought her a cake, wrote a card for her, bought flowers, gave her special treatment. This truly had all 11 of us tearing up. The kindness, hugs, respect, and honor they showed us on behalf of our father will always be remembered. Their actions truly made a difference tonight. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I went to Mission on a Sunday after church looking for some great barbecue. I got the two meat sampler with brisket and pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and baked beans. For $14 I was hoping that this would really good. The brisket and pork were very tender and moist and of the two, the brisket had more flavor. I had a few fatty pieces that were actually tasty but for the most part, I wasn't wowed. The thing is, great bbq has a smokiness to it that Mission just didn't achieve. When my order was called, I was told that they had 11 barbecue sauces, from sweet to spicy. Since that description didn't lead me in any specific direction, I just asked for the sweet sauce. For my sides, I went with a nearby cashier's suggestions. She mentioned that the macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and green beans were the most popular so I got the first two. This was another macaroni and cheese disappointment. It was lacking in cheese, salt, and pepper. The beans weren't much better. I actually ended up adding the sweet barbecue sauce to them to enhance the flavor. The atmosphere at Mission is very casual and verrry patriotic. Mission BBQ has finally arrived this side of the St. John. This place is a welcomed addition to the Southside bbq scene. Southern bbq served in with a side of patriotism. You can't miss the theme at this establishment as there are tributes to the uniformed forces on every square foot of every wall. If you're patriotic you will feel even more patriotic eating here. This place is great! Great food, atmosphere, ambiance, etc. They have outdoor seating available, which is great in today's world. There food is always top notch, and there sides are great. They have very gold Cole slaw, and that is a commodity that is becoming harder and harder to find. If you're there at noon, prepare to stand up and say the pledge of allegiance (which they do daily). Moist, not dry, and not super fatty. Of the 3 meats I tried, the smoked turkey was my favorite as it was super moist and well seasoned. The brisket was okay, I didn't like that it was cut into small chunks as I prefer whole slices. I normally love ribs, but I didn't care too much for their ribs. I felt that there was way too much rub and you lost the porky-ness. Few things I did like: - All meats come with no sauce on top, hate when food is over sauced. They have 6-8 diff sauces at each table for you to try, all different styles from ketchup based to vinegar. - The mac and cheese is delicious!! We went to Mission bbq for the first time. The cashier was great. She came around to our side of the counter and explained the entire menu to us. Excellent customer service! We received our meal quickly and began enjoying our meal. Michelle, a different employee came to check on us. She heard we were first timers. She asked if we wanted to sample anything. We tried a few items. She was so friendly and helpful. At noon the national anthem came on. The entire restaurant stood and sang. How incredible! Michelle came back to check in on us. The prices seemed decent, although they upcharge around $3-$4 for a side and drink or two sides and a drink. They were quick to get us through the checkout process, and the food followed up within a few minutes. We were disappointed by the presentation and amount of food received. The green beans tasted good, but my boyfriend did not like his baked beans. He is not a mustard fan, and he could taste the mustard in it. The cornbread was dry, and my turkey was overspiced. Mike the manager was a great host to this new establishment representing St. John's Town Center. It has a wonderful concept that is a celebration to service men and women. I normally don't find barbecue restaurants on my short list of dining preferences. However, this was one I was curious about and it paid off. The staff was service oriented friendly and because it was just brand spanking new (this review was stuck in my drafts for a year waiting on me to finish it) there were some items that were unavailable as far as sides. Since then that is not an issue. The customers understood because a separate suggestion was made from staff recommendations. Good way to satisfy the customer. There were dessert samples that a dining area lady was so excited about sharing and drummed up your tastebuds for it. It really was as good as she stated. There are beverages (of course) a nice selection to choose from as far as sandwiches combos and such. The peach cobbler is one of their staples that they encourage you to try. I'm not a peach nor a cobbler fan, but I have to admit it was pretty good. Besides, I'm reviewing the establishment and food so why not go outside my comfort zone?! The decor was very patriotic and American. There's no mistaking that. There are pictures on the walls throughout that show the great service men and women from Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and evening firefighters, police persons, service animals and more. They also have a Veterans VIP that you may enlist in and get free chow if you're a veteran. They also have armed forces week as well with daily offerings.
