The MIX Downtown has been the goto location for our nightlife events. The VIP Host Lindsey (@lindsey_vip) has always been accommodating and worked with all of our sometimes ridiculous requests. Her and the staff are attentive and provide a safe environment. The venue is clean and well-kept. Security pays attention to uncouth antics and swiftly addresses things. The layout is open, so unlike other "club" environments you have the opportunity to have conversations and get to know people. You don't feel like you're in a can. The demographics are typically mid-20s and above so you don't feel like you're wading through toddlers. Did I mention that half is an outdoor rooftop? While you do pay a slight premium for drinks, you are essentially paying for the ambience of the locale. I've been here for happy hours after work, private events and most recently for a night out to celebrate a birthday. All of the events have been fun and a great experience with the venue. They have two bars - one for the outside seating area and one for inside so it's not hard to get a drink. They layout of the place is also very open and spacious. Bathrooms are clean and during night club hours, there is an attendant present to ensure supplies are in stock and the line keeps moving. No waiting around ladies. The security dudes were cool af but the bartender was rude. Dude looked like he didn't want to work or be there. I gave him $40 and needed my change back so I waited. Dude just took my change and threw it into the tip jar without asking me or giving it to me. I was wtf and left because I didn't want to make a scene. I'm from out of town and this is how they treat people. Same night, right after getting my beers from the bartender, me and buddies went to sit down and some other dude in a suit was sitting and he was saying something under his breath. I asked him to repeat himself because I couldn't hear. Dude said "oh you guys can't sit there because it's for the VIPs only and I was like bro, their's no one sitting here. He told me that the seats weren't registered yet but once they are, you all are gonna get kicked out in a rude way with attitude and left. I've been to the Mix a few times, I've always enjoyed myself. It has good DJs, a nice dance floor and an indoor/outdoor area. The outside area has a fire pit and if you smoke that's the place to be. The dance floor is nice it but it does get crowded. The crowd gets younger as the night goes on. The bathrooms are clean. It's a place you can take almost anybody. It's upstairs, the stairs are steep but you can take the elevator. read more

I give the Mix 3 stars for ambiance and deducted 4 stars for the extremely poor customer service. So it's a -1. I visited this establishment on June 27 with a party of 10. We reserved a booth and bottle service and spent a good bit at the bar. Great mix of guests, the music was okay, but way too much cigarette smoke. (There are no ashtrays so everyone throws their butts on the floor.) I only purchased 2 drinks and cashed out my card, then neglected to pick up my card. I realized it when I got home, called the bank and put a hold on it, then called the Mix the next morning and left a vm on the general manager's line. No return call. I waited 24 hours and then called back, this time leaving a detailed vm on the line where we booked the reservation. No return call. On the third day, I sent an email and included an image of my receipt showing the bartender's name, the time of the transaction, and all the details. Each time, I asked for the courtesy of a call to let me know if they had my card or not. It would have taken a whole minute out of their day. It's been 2 weeks, and not one person gave me the basic courtesy of a return call or a response to my email. (But they call you back pretty quickly when you want to reserve an expensive booth and bottle service!) I will not be back, and I will not recommend them to anyone looking to host an event. read more

Coming back home to sac for vacation and decided to hit up the MIX last Sunday night. I never really leave reviews anywhere but this one i feel like i should. Had some friends already inside the club as we were trying to meet up with them. Got in like approximately 10:50 that night and we were the only ones in line at the time( first in line aswell). There are 2 lines, one for general admission (which we were in) and one for booths. I get it's Veterans Day weekend and a lot of clubs and bars like to hold the line to make the spot seem more active, and the security do their jobs as told by management. I just feel like that night the line was held for too long that It not only ruined it for me and ended up leaving, but everyone else that got in first because of booths or because they knew the security and were letting them skip the line, a lot of those people I seen go inside, and 5 mins later walk out. The line didn't move as we were first in line at 10:50, actually ended up leaving around 11:40 because I hate wasting my time and the line didn't move at all, but keep in mind we were at the front of the general admission line. The friends we where trying to meet inside actually told us that there was not a lot of people inside at the time either, and that explains why I saw a lot of people who skipped the line cause of knowing the security guards or having booths ended up walking in and out of the club, as essential it seemed to me that the party was actually more outside of the club then it was inside. I don't know who was in charge of the holding the line for perceived value of a club that night was cause I know it wasn't securities orders, but I believe that you guys went alittle too overboard with holding it that day. I get to hold the line a bit, but if the party is more outside of the club then inside, to were your having people walking out 5 mins later because it's dead inside and majority of the party is actually waiting in a line that didn't move at all, I think the marketing strategy needs to change a bit because are are not only ruined it for me and the people waiting in line, but also the people being served inside aswell. read more

I attempted to bring 50+ surgeons visiting Sacramento for a national medical conference. Everyone in the party identifies as black or African-American. We were abruptly turned away at the door because three people in the party were wearing Nikes that were considered too " urban" for admission into the establishment. It is incredibly embarrassing to attempt to show my colleagues a good time in the city I serve, only to be subjected to racial profiling and outright racism. I would not ever recommend this place to anyone. This club plays music created by Black artists all night, but openly discriminates against non-white costumers. This is a problem that trickles down from the owners to the security at the front door. This place is absolutely disgraceful. read more

I came for a day time party with LA-based Doc Martin and had a pretty good time. There is definitely some epic people watching to be had here. The party started off with the inside and outdoor patio closed off, giving smokers an insulated area, but they opened up the windows eventually, making the vibe a bit more open but a little more mingling of the smells. The sound system was actually pretty decent for the size of the dance floor. Much more of the space has lounging areas and some tables. The bartenders did a pretty good job with the crowd and knowing who was up next. I didn't find the prices or pours anything to write home about, though I've certainly been more ripped off before. Work had their Xmas party at Mix this past weekend for 3 hours before they opened to the public. The inside of this place is super nice. There is a coat check and two (2) large bar areas with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating area had plenty of heaters and fire pits keeping everyone warm. The appetizers they served were really good, but the portion sizes were small. * They don't have parking. ** There's a bouncer at the door. *** And there's a dress code to even get into the establishment. This place is so shady. They told us we couldn't get in because two people in our party had Jordan's on. One of the Jordan's was all leather and a very expensive specialty Jordan. We are sneaker heads and know fashion. The bouncers use the dress code as a way to make extra money. This is 2023, anybody in hip hop culture (music they play in their club) knows how to fashionably dress up Jordan's! The bouncer specifically tells us no Jordan's. 5 minutes later we see him letting people in with Jordan's! If the bouncer knows you or you slide him $100 he'll get you in. I saw a girl who looked sloppy and not dressed up at all, but she's allowed to go in their club. And Jordan's specifically are not allowed( but with an extra cost, they are). But anybody with fashion sense knows how to dress them up or down! We can go to the club, clean, classy and dressed to impress with sneakers on! My entire party are elite, successful, educated and classy group. We know how to step out and look like royalty while staying true to our culture! Never sloppy. The dress code needs to be updated and they should stop playing our music to lure people in when they don't fully support the culture. Bouncers clearly need to be paid more because they are bending the rules for extra cash making it unfair and discriminatory. They also charged us extra on our table because we came after 11. They told us they resold our table but it was multiple empty tables. So we paid extra for VIP and to get our Jordan's in! Also, we had a table outside. My husband is wearing a beanie because it's really cold. The club is about to close and a bouncer has the audacity to come up to my husband and tell him to take his beanie off. All while his colleague behind him is wearing a beanie! I bet you if my husband was not black, he wouldn't have even noticed his beanie. I'm a business owner and don't like to use yelp to write negative reviews (you can see my previous reviews) I'm all about empowerment and supporting local and small businesses, but this place was so disrespectful. The only reason we stayed was because we were celebrating birthdays and already put a deposit down for the table. I reserved a $450 table for Dec 2 for my best friend's birthday for a party of about 11 people. In the days leading up to this night, I checked the website MULTIPLE TIMES regarding rules, drinks, and dress code. I did this to inform the rest of our party so that we all knew what we could and could not wear. NOWHERE does it say that a hood is prohibited in this establishment, ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE. The night of our event, we gather our party and get in the VIP line. The lil man at the door stopped me after checking my i.d. and told me that I could not enter the club because I had a "hoodie" on. I informed him that this is simply a shirt with a hood on (extremely cold that night) and not a typical "hoodie". He then said that management didn't allow hoods in the club. I told him that I checked the website multiple times and that this rule was not stated anywhere. Keep in mind that I have the 10 people in my party behind me. He said I'd have to take off my shirt and wear whatever was underneath it or "you can go to Target and buy something appropriate and come back". These were his exact words. Underneath I had on an old busted Mickey Mouse t-shirt l. As a bigger guy, I'm not very fond of my body and the idea of wearing just that t-shirt in a public forum was mortifying. I asked if I could just tuck in the hood, and he said no, "no hoods allowed". Then he asked me to step out of line. After I did, I asked why he couldn't let me in with just a heads up for next time and he said that the decision was his and he wasn't going to let me in even after he found out I had a table reserved. We started to walk away but none of us are from Sacramento, we don't know the area, we are 11 people deep, it's my boys birthday, and it's cold outside, rain is coming...what else were we supposed to do in that moment? I decided to take off the shirt and wear the t-shirt. It was mind boggling that he would rather an ill fitting t-shirt be let in over an expensive shirt purchased that morning. I was extremely embarrassed going in there and couldn't relax due to my self consciousness. Once inside I paid for the bottle service (over $700 btw) and sat in the corner of our section. A friend pulled me on the dance floor and lo and behold, the fella behind my friend is on the dance floor wearing a jacket WITH A HOOD. Security was all around the place and nobody said anything to this guy all night. Security was right there next to the dance floor and this guy was never approached once. What is the difference between his situation and mine? I'll let you all look at the pictures and decide what the main difference is. Came here last night and it is totally different from the first time I came here. Me & my friend got here kind of "early", before 9:00, so we didn't have to pay a cover. What's different coming here in winter as opposed to summer are all the lit up fire pits and overhead heaters. Makes it comfy for those who like to show some skin. Speaking of showing skin, I felt totally covered up. Like the expression goes: I don't get out much. I had on a turtleneck sweater which turned out to be 168% more than what other women were wearing. Seriously! I saw one woman (okay, let's call it what it is, a "cougar") who had on a strapless top and mini skirt. Let's just say you could tell if she got a Brazilian or not... We got to sit in the reserved seating area because we looked like two quiet suburban housewives who wouldn't cause a scene. At least, I'm pretty sure that was what the guy who had the ear piece in his ear wearing black thought as he encouraged us to use the space. By the time I was ready to leave, the VIP group came and we had to vacate. But it was the best seat in the house, and we didn't have to pay for it. The most hilarious part was the dance freak who started warming up the dance floor. As soon as Madonna's "Holiday" broke out, he was spinning pirouettes, doing the running man and any other old house move you can think of. He was hilarious! Our waitress/bar person told us he is a regular now, never buys any drinks though. She said "at least he gets the dancing going". Drink prices are what you would expect for a place like this. I stuck to wine as I try not to mix alcohols and had already started on wine. Glasses range from $7 - $20 and you can get "tastes" as well for about half that amount. Great spot for people-watching. Maybe for those of us Sacramentans that don't want to plan ahead and drive to and from San Francisco yet want that modern, upscale atmosphere, then I would highly give "MIX" a try. It is THE place to see and be seen as well as delivering some of the hippest, coolest decor of any nightclub that you'll find in between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe. A little bit of history about "MIX Downtown" is that it is actually the original Firestone building that was designed way back in the Great Depression days. And ever since its initial grand opening back in 2009, it has brought many innovative designs in its tenure. Conveniently located at 16th & L St's. in bustling downtown Sacramento, "MIX" is surrounded by other popular neighboring bars and restaurants. With that said and done, "MIX" has set the standard for what a restaurant/nightclub/lounge should be. What makes "MIX" unique is that their entire business is located on the 2nd floor. This creates an amazing view from an aesthetic perspective. And with that is a modern art deco design complete with a refined look throughout. It exemplifies of something I would see more in Las Vegas or Los Angeles so this is a trend of what many new places should look like. And with that is a large dancing area, a cozy outdoor area (with fire pits that are on during the winter months), and an extensive bar. I came here with my lovely lady, Claudia H. on a Friday evening for a "Yelp Happy Hour UYE" (Unofficial Yelp Event) celebrating fellow Yelper, Carol P.'s birthday. We immediately notice our fellow Yelp friends indulging in a variety of wonderful appetizers. And with that said and done, "MIX" offers specials every Monday through Friday from 4-7pm. This includes 1/2 off all small plates, draft beers for $3.50, and well drinks & wine for $5.00. As I had a very light lunch, we ordered three appetizers that consisted of their "Kobe Beef Sliders", "Chicken Tacos", and "Empanadas Cubanas". And to wash it down, I had my signature Jack Daniels & Coke while my lady opted for their BV Chardonnay Century. Our food and drinks came out very quickly and I must say, everything tasted pretty darn good! Not to mention, the service was very attentive as our bartender/hostess was there periodically to see if we wanted more drinks or even a second round of appetizers. And speaking of drinks, my Jack & Coke tasted perfect; surprisingly it was not watered down like other places I've gone to, a big plus in my book. As far as the food goes, the chicken tacos were plentiful as there was a nice amount of meat complete with guacamole, Monterey jack cheese, shallots, cabbage, and jalapeños. The sliders also had a tangy amount of sweet caramelized onions, pickles, and pepper mayonnaise. These were also filling as they didn't skimp on the meat either. And finally, the empanadas were both our favorite appetizer. The spiced ground beef with cumin and other spices packed a nice punch. And the flaky pie dough provided a nice crisp texture while dipping it in the salsa verde sauce. Many of our other friends of the Sacramento Yelp community loved their appetizers as this atmosphere is truly an inviting one for anyone that wants a fun evening. Its a great place for socializing, meetings, parties, or having a good time with friends. One tip I would advise would be to get here early enough to avoid the $20 cover charge (which is after 9pm) during the popular nights. Watch out for the blonde server named Tiffany. She was rude, rolled her eyes, and didn't believe that my ID was mine on my 26th birthday! She straight up said it was suspicious that someone bought me a drink. When we asked about something we ordered that hadn't come out, she said that it was our fault for ordering so much. WOW. Came in this past Friday for HH and stayed for 'Rifts and Rooftops'. Enjoyed the grilled peach salad and the frozen Rosé flight ($10 and comes with two glasses of wine, chocolate kisses, sliced strawberries, and a frozé haha). The music, food, and drinks were wonderful! I think that people still sleep on Mix as a good spot for happy hour.
