The Argentinian and the Green Chile Chicken are a must have! For veggies, the spinach mushroom is really good, too. Avoid the black bean-it's dry and tasteless. Also, plain old ham and cheese is a good choice (I would have liked more cheese). The asparagus, blue cheese and priscuitto is yummy if you don't mind salt. It's quick. My Fi and his friends went here for lunch and brought me back some tasties. MMM![panada]. I had the green chile chicken empanada scarfed in about 4.3 seconds. The filling was minced-ish, which made it easy to take bites and not have a huge mouthful of food (or if that's what you like, then by all means go for it). And it was spicy but not too spicy that you need a huge drink to chase it wish. The outside crust was baked to perfection! Golden brown, delicious, and it was sealed attractively (as opposed to a misformed hockey puck that it could have looked like). I also had half of a desserty peach empanada which was great. And I accidently bit into a breakfast empanada (there was some confusion about which empanada was which), and that was delish too. I'll eat again! read more

Was so grateful that they offer a black bean empanada for folks that don't mind skipping some dairy or meat for a meal (or, aka, vegans). The exterior was pretty much perfectly done. But the filling was so basic. It was supposed to be black bean with a couple of other ingredients that I can't recall, and it was just black bean mush. If it weren't for the cilantro chutney on the side (yum!!), this would have been a super disappointing experience. I hate to be a Debbie Downer on Mmmpanadas, but I didn't find their empanadas to be all that remarkable, especially considering the hype in both the Austin American Statesman and GQ Magazine (which is how I initially found out about this place). Unfortunately, the customer in front of me took the last green chile chicken empanada, which appears to be the clear favorite of those in line in front of me, so I grabbed two others: The brisket and spinach mushroom. I found the brisket empanada, which included pieces of chopped brisket, beans, and onion, to be a bit too sweet for my tastes. The flavor all seemed very muddled together and somewhat monotonous after the 3rd or 4th bite. The delicious salsa seemed to help add a bit of kick, but shouldn't a sauce be a compliment and not requirement? Perhaps anywhere other than Austin, people would think of this thing as bliss, but when you come out with anything "BBQ" in BBQ Mecca (otherwise known as Central Texas), you're going to be up against some pretty stiff competition. While the BBQ empanada was a let down, the Spinach Mushroom was even worse. I'm not sure if it's being overwhelmed by the eggy-ness of the dough, or the spinach, but the two ingredients I was most interested in (the feta cheese and pine nuts) seemed totally lost and indistinguishable amongst everything. The lemony butter sauce didn't seem to help that much either. I had some pretty high expectations for this place and was ultimately let down. I would like to eventually try the green chile chicken empanada (and others) before I give my final judgement but ,for now, Mmmpanadas gets 2 stars out of 5. read more

Damn it! I had really high hopes. Maybe I just had the wrong things? I tried two of their empanadas at Nomad last night, and was a little disappointed. I liked the flakey crust, and over all there was pretty good flavor...but where's the freaking CHEESE?? A Veggie chorizo and brie empanada? Sounds great, doesn't it? I mean, except for the fact that chorizo flavors will likely completely overpower a cheese like brie. Fortunately, that wasn't going to be a problem, since there was practically no brie in there at all. Oh sure, I found evidence of small bits of it here and there when I looked closely, but I had to really search for it visually and couldn't taste it at all. I also had the spinach, mushroom, goat cheese, and pine nut one. Guess what I found inside? Spinach! And...a few pine nuts! And...well, that's pretty much it. Not even a hint of goat cheese that I could see or taste, and not a mushroom to be found. They were served with a chipotle aioli, which I tried and it had pretty good flavor. In fact, I kinda wish I'd had more of that stuff, as it was the most flavorful part of the meal. I hope I just caught a bad batch or maybe ordered the wrong thing. I really love me some empanadas, but haven't been able to find a good place for them here in Austin. read more

Yum! I hadn't had an empanada since I lived in H-town years ago. In Houston, Marini's has been around for years. These guys make an empanada that definitely compares favorably to Marini's. Their truck showed up at work today during lunchtime. I had the black bean and a green chile chicken. Both were great! Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found the crust to be perfect. I like the green chile chicken better, but the black bean wasn't bad at all. They both were spicy, which I like. Only reason they don't get 5 stars is the selection. Marini's must have 30 varieties. These guys have about 10. Of course, that might have something to do w/ the fact they're serving theirs our of a truck while Marini's is a brick & mortar restaurant. No matter, mmmpanadas is great, and dine with them again in the future. read more

Simple straight forward, but looks like the only offer certain varieties at different times. When I visited the Argentinian, Green chili, Breakfast, and Vegetarian where only available it seemed. Having tried the green chili and the Argentinian I can only vouch for those items and the service and experience. Nicely run with a staff that could answer any questions about the product. Inexpensive. Each empanada is 4 dollars when I visited, and they are a very good size, with plenty of filling. Even the sauces that come are solid, chipotle mayo is a great smokey burst, and the lime aoli is just bright and fresh and dripping with citrus tang. The Argentinian is a hit. Backed with flavorful meat, egg, olives and I think some raisin, it is wonderfully seasoned. The green chili however is a little less impressive, and actually not packing much chili taste, and with a shredded chicken filling that is a bit bland. The pastry though is done well, nice and soft, not to thick or hard, and does have a classic small sweetness to the breading. Very good all around, would definitely hit some of the other empanada flavors to try when in the mood. read more

This place make some delicious Argentinian style beef empanadas. They have the standard hard boiled eggs and olives. They are really well seasoned and not at all bland. The dough is really good and not overly thick. I've had a couple of others on the menu and they're nothing to rave about. But the credit card was down, my green chile chicken filling was so dry and my salsa was thick to the point that it would not pour out of the container. I first tried mmmpanadas at gypsy picnic 2011 and had a better impression then, maybe these had just sat in the warmer too long. They were one of the few food trucks at the Austin Marathon back in February. I had an Argentinian empanada. It was tasty but small and quickly-consumed. At $4 each, they are overpriced compared to Houston sit-down Argentinian restaurants which sometimes cost as little as $2.50 each. The cashier was friendly. mmmpanadas marks the beginning and continuation of the small-batch producer-to-market trend in Austin. Homegrown bakers are distributing gluten-laden breads and pastries (gluten is a dying protein in this day and age, unfortunately) to coffee shops, and companies like this guy are cranking out empanadas for deli cases all around town. Though I usually do not fall into the novelty of a crazy menu or unique flavor combinations--I do try to err on simple and good--these guys crank out some special flavors and sauces. The Classic Green Chile Chicken is a little creamy, boasting a slight spice with some savory notes to complete the southwestern character. The classic Argentinian gives way to fresh ground beef, hard boiled eggs, and olives. Overall, a great combo with salty, savory, and meaty nuances being rolled into some dough. The basic salsa, chipotle mayo, lemon aioli all have their perks. Quality does take precedent here, and it is very apparent in the ingredients and grassroots approach, but nothing set this food truck apart from any others, though I do very much appreciate the concept. read more

Empanadas! Although I've had mmmpanadas in the past, I recently had an opportunity to visit again and try the Argentinian and the Ham and Cheese Experiment. I loved The Argentinian - it catered to my palette perfectly with ground beef, a hard-boiled egg, and some olives here and there. The taste was great and the ground beef and egg really complemented each other well, although I do wish there were a little more filling. Overall, very satisfied with this choice. The Ham and Cheese Experiment was just OK. The impression I got from the description made me think there would be some special twist on it, but it really kind of tasted like a glorified hot pocket (although to mmmpanadas' credit, I do love me some Ham & Cheese hot pockets). The empanadas themselves were very tasty pastries - I agree with a previous reviewer that they are quickly flaky and buttery. As a whole, mmmpanadas is a great option for anyone. SUMMARY Delicious, crispy, satisfying. I had the BLACK BEAN EMPANADA The filling was well stuffed with whole and mashed black beans, very well seasoned with the usual Latin suspects (cumin, chili powder, I suspect) and spicy from jalapenos, but not overwhelmingly so. There were a few corn kernels throughout and hint of cilantro. The crust was delicious, which isn't tough when you use vegetable shortening, a butter substitute. Generous! That's the first word that comes to mind when I think of Mmmpanadas. Not only are these empanadas are yummy, the owners are super generous in more ways than one. I was here for a conference and they were parked on a street corner giving away empanadas for free. I was thinking to myself, "I better ask for two since empanadas are pretty small and I want to make sure I am full." They were nice enough to give me the two I wanted. These babies were STUFFED to the brim. They did not skimp on any of the fillings. I became an immediate fan. It is SO SO rare (too rare) that I fine any food establishment that uses quality ingredients at the right quantity. This place was great! I was new to town and rolled by on my bike one day, but the smell of empanadas pulled me in. I got three - two savory, plus a sweet one for later - and all were great. The soy chorizo sausage was tasty - my only complaint is that it didn't have a lot going on beside the convincing fake meat and spicy sauce, could maybe use a veggie or two for texture (or olives? hot peppers?) - and the spinach one with goat cheese and pine nuts was divine. I saved the peach cobbler for later that day and, frankly, of the three I tried that was the best. My only (probably unfair) complaint is the cost. This is a general issue I have with the price of empanadas at most non-traditional bakeries in this country. $3.50, seriously?? Delicious! I tried two empanadas: 1) The Spinach Mushroom 2) Black Bean I bought them at Wheatsville, and heated them up at home, although I hear you can buy them at different places around town either refrigerated, frozen, or heated up for you. I like their packaging. The designs are really funky, and they are simple. Super easy to heat up in the toaster oven. They smelled great, which made it hard to wait for them to get hot enough. 1) The flavors and textures of the spinach mushroom empanada were pitch-perfect. I couldn't get enough of the luscious crust, and the roasted pine nuts added a great crunch to the silky spinach/mushroom filling. 2) The Black Bean empanada was more basic, with a slight spice that could have been hotter. I didn't find it to be too dry as others have mentioned. I would definitely buy them again, and in larger quantities if they were available. I haven't been to their truck, but after looking at their menu, I am a bit disappointed that there are not more vegetarian savory empanadas. Also, it seems like if they were to take out the egg wash and replace the milk in the crust, the desert empanadas would be vegan friendly too. I recommend these empanadas. Found in a grocery store, they are a great (and often much better) alternative to a frozen burrito. read more

One thing I am completely annoyed with in Austin is terrible customer service. I feel like every place I go lately is greeted with a lacking or completely absent customer service. I'm in a new area of town for work and exploring new lunch places. I go to mmmpanada because I've heard about it. Not even a hello from the truck counter woman. So I decided to just get my order and let the food speak for itself and try not to be annoyed by the hipster db attitude that I get a lot in this town. I was pretty excited when I saw the mmmpandas truck in the Mueller parking lot (aka Browning Hangar). I have been on the hunt for some of their pastry enclosed goodness for a couple years now. The prices looked great and it was lunch time. I got a ham and cheese for the little guy (which he promptly wolfed down) and I had the spinach and mushroom with goat cheese. After chowing down on some mmmpanadas at St. Ed's for several semesters, we had a graduation party catered with a great variety of mmmpanadas. Kristen took great care of us even though our party was at the tail end of a busy week with SXSW. We had the Argentinian, Spicy Black Been, Green Chile Chicken, and Spinach Mushroom. The Argentinian was a crowd favorite, but mine is still the ol' faithful Spicy Black Bean. Let's be frank. These sorts of food carts/trucks/kiosks are seldom sought out specifically for their own purpose, and almost always stumbled onto a few drinks in on empty stomachs. For that purpose - it simply can't be beat considering the amount of bad-to-mediocre pizza that exists out there in the streets of downtown Austin. They have variety (more than 1 veg choice), run-on-par with pizza slice costs, and are a welcome reprieve to the thirst-quenched but hungry midnight wanderer. I was disappointed that the dough for the meat empanadas had milk in it, making the others completely off limits to me. I know from experience that there's no need for milk in the dough. read more
