I waited to write this review until I had some time to ride my bike after the tune-up. Overall, it seems improved, but there are still a couple of issues that stand out. The brakes continue to rub, and the shifting occasionally skips gears. It's possible that some of this is due to the bike being on the lower end of the price range, but I've spoken with others who own the same model and they've said these issues shouldn't persist after a proper tune-up. I can't say enough good things about this mechanic. I brought my e-bike in for service, and he discovered a critical crack in the hub motor that I never would have noticed. He explained clearly that continuing to ride could lead to catastrophic failure. Had he not warned me, I could have been seriously injured, or worse. My bike was making noise. I found James on Yelp and contacted him through messages and email. He quickly responded to me and scheduled a time. He arrived on time and very quickly started working on my bike. Since I have a heavy cargo bike, he had to work on site. I was very pleased with how much attention he gave to my bike, he nicely tuned up and replaced one of the broken tire. He also did a bleeding of the bike break. Now it could break so much better! He tested it many times before he confirmed his work was done. It was quite a hot sunny day, He still was very focus and professional with his work! TL;DR: I highly recommend Mobile Bicycle Repair and the owner of this business, James. I had two e-bikes and one 20 year-old Townie that needed a lot of love; each had unique issues. He found problems I was not aware of (providing photographic evidence to back up his claim) and recommended options to improve safety/longevity. He went above and beyond my expectations. Prices were reasonable, especially since I didn't have to take the bikes to and from a shop! Give him a try! Full Review: This is a long one. I have been disappointed in the past at the quality of the service work done at many local bicycle shops, so searched Yelp for other options. Mobile Bicycle Repair had outstanding ratings, and I liked that they would pick up the bicycles--I had three to transport! James responded very quickly to my inquiry on Yelp and originally scheduled the pickup for the next day--a Saturday! Very responsive! I ended up postponing it so I could ride two of the bikes on the weekend. He came Monday instead. I had different issues with each bike. Two were e-bikes, one brand new, another a year old. The other was a 20 year-old Townie that I wanted made sure was in good shape for my daughter to use at college (don't want a new bike at a university!). James listened carefully to my explanation of what I wanted done with each bike: my goals and planned usage, not just the issues. He asked smart follow-up questions to make sure he understood what I wanted. He didn't take any notes, which worried me a bit--how was he going to remember all of this? He also didn't provide any kind of receipt showing what bikes he had received for repair. He just loaded them up on the bike rack on the back of his van and left. He told me would get back to me two days later (Wednesday) with an estimate after examining each bike. I didn't hear anything from him, so I texted him late Wednesday afternoon--no response. I texted him again on Thursday, also no response. I tried calling the number Friday morning but it just went to voicemail. Now I was starting to wonder--have I been scammed? Did I just stupidly give a thief $8K worth of e-bikes with no way to get them back? Later that day, I received a text message from James and I called him. This time we talked and I explained my misgivings--particularly that he had been non-responsive for two days. He apologized profusely. We had a long talk about how to improve his business practices to provide more reassurance to future customers. He is new at this and realized how the lack of documentation and then no contact could worry a customer. He then walked me through his assessment of each bike--he had remembered everything I had told him! He pointed out additional items on my old Townie which should also be addressed, and the prices he quoted were more reasonable than the local shops. He followed up after our call with a long text message explaining exactly what services he would do to each bike, and the parts and labor for each. He also committed to get the bikes back to me on Monday or Tuesday--pretty fast turnaround! He texted me again on Monday with a couple of additional issues he had found on the Townie, sending me photos showing how the rear wheel was cracked at one point and reporting that the rotors on the used e-bike were glazed and needed sanding. He also suggested adding tube liners for two of the bikes--something I had been thinking about over the weekend. I also asked him, since he was replacing the wheel, to also put on a new tire and inner tube. With the additional services, he said it would take another day to get the Townie ready (Wednesday instead of Tuesday). He offered to return the two e-bikes as committed to by Tuesday, but I said it was fine to bring back all three bicycles on Wednesday. When I tested all three bikes, I was impressed. The Townie needed the most work, and it rides like a brand new bike. The new, waxed chain is much quieter, and shifts are quicker and precise. He replaced the brake calipers (no charge!) because the original ones disintegrated when he was replacing the brake pads (nor surprising on such an old bicycle). He even cleaned up the bike! His attention to detail and thoroughness really impressed me. This is what I want in a service experience--he understood my objectives and made sure everything that needed to be done was to achieve that. So often when you take a bike to a shop, someone writes up the order and the actual mechanic just follows what specific tasks are written down--there is no opportunity to make sure they understand what you are trying to accomplish. And rarely will they go above and beyond the bare minimum. Mobile Bicycle Repair was a refreshing experience. Also, I have to say that James is a genuinely nice human being. He took the time to listen to my complaints (about not contacting me), and was open to my suggestions for how to make a better experience. I haven't been on a bike in decades and during the pandemic I stopped leaving my house and got in *really* lousy shape. My knees and hips are in such bad shape, and my balance isn't good, so I mail ordered an adult tricycle and hired James to assemble it. He did an excellent job, even making a trip to the hardware store to buy bolts that were missing from the package. He suggested a chain wax treatment, to make the chain move more smoothly and need less maintenance, and a tire treatment to make them more puncture resistant. When he brought the bike back to me, he spent quite a bit of time adjusting it so it fit me and coaching me on how riding a tricycle is different than riding a bicycle (something I hadn't really considered properly). I definitely feel like this was money well spent! James was so very patient and kind and encouraging. I can tell I am going to need to do some parking lot practice before I really get comfortable riding again, but after his help and encouragement I feel much more confident that I will get there fairly quickly. James is wonderful and only one of two mobile repair services serving the South Bay Area. He comes to your home or business by appointment (use his website to setup) and does all the work on-site in his large lorry. He has most everything necessary from a parts perspective. In my case, I had a bike which'd been sitting for over a decade and he completely restored it in two hours. The bike looks a little better than when it was first bought in 2006. He take cash and credit cards. James also emails you a receipt which includes everything he did on the bike and notes. I plan to use him for yearly tune-ups if this bike sees a lot of use. The tires he put on the bike were far better than the stock ones and he even restored the spokes completely for free. It's currently $120 for a yearly maintenance plus parts. Just as with musical instruments, James caused me to realize having a seasoned pro setup a new instrument is similar with bikes. If I newly bought a bike, I might consider having him go through it anyway; especially if it's going to see a lot of usage. He does work on motorized bikes and other mixed mode models as well. Our two bicycles started out dusty from lack of use, and they hadn't had any TLC since I bought them. They needed at least a basic tune-up and maintenance, but I had no idea what else they might have needed. After MBR, they look brand new; I wish I had pictures from before (think cobwebs, and pollen from last summer). James picked them up, found issues with them they'd had since we bought them that we didn't even know about, fixed everything, and brought them back in great time. The pricing was reasonable, and the attention to detail was *chef's kiss*. He was able to be super-accommodating in terms of timing, pickup and delivery, and there was great communication throughout.
