Outer mochi is perfectly soft and chewy and the gelato inside is smooth, creamy, sweet and refreshing. Perfect mochi to gelato ratio! They're super cute too but since its gelato it needs to be kept cold so you pretty much have to eat it on the spot. They have a seating area that's big enough for groups so bring your friends! Even their smallest size, the single, is probably meant for sharing. Goodness, I got recommended this place by a coworker and she wasn't kidding! I came here with little expectations and just kinda went because my coworker said its good. I ordered three flavors of the Mochi ice cream. Tirimisu, coconut and coffee. It was a $1.25 for each. I had such a hard time deciding which flavors to get. The menu consists of gelato, mochi, shaved ice, Beard Papa's cream puffs, and taiyaki (Japanese fish shaped cake). Ever since SomiSomi (https://www.yelp.com/biz/somisomi-los-angeles-3) exploded into our social media feeds with their attractive and delicious taiyaki, a lot of places in Orange County have begun to add it to their menu in hopes of increasing sales. To me, SomiSomi is still a cut above in terms of quality, texture, and flavor. The taiyaki here is decent. The batter used to make the cone isn't as good. The texture is a bit spongier on the inside and it's too crispy around the edges. The only flavors for soft serve are matcha green tea and vanilla, but you can opt for a swirl of both. The soft serve's texture is a bit icy. The green tea has a very prominent matcha flavor, bordering on the edge of slightly too bitter. There are no toppings offered, and the filling is either red bean or custard (the same custard used in the Beard Papa's). The red bean filling isn't ground into its usual paste consistency, but instead it's just the bean itself with some sauce. The mochi here is a bit pricey. It's $2 apiece and there aren't that many flavors to choose from. Quality wise, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the items here versus a 6 pack sold a short walk away at Mitsuwa. The only differences are that it'd be cheaper, but you don't get to choose multiple flavors. The Beard Papa's are pretty good. The cream puffs are about the size of a Costco muffin, and they add a good amount of filling to each one. The custard has good flavor and it's pretty silky smooth in texture. There are several shell options to pick from as well. The service is friendly, but can be painfully slow. I've always loved this place. Although the times I've come here have been very few and far between, I find that the indulgence is quite sweet--besides the price--at Mochilato. Their mochi-covered gelato balls (mochilato) come at $2 bucks a piece (be careful to not overdo it). They have a TON of flavors--hazelnut, guava, creme brulee, almond, green tea, etc. They also have fresh gelato being served and their flavors tend to be on the fruity side, with a few of the generics. All easy to finish--I'm an ice cream/gelato fiend anyhow! They serve macarons and Beard Papa's cream puffs here as well, which my friends rave about. Let me get this out there right away...I don't think you should come here for the regular food. I've tried about four dishes and they were all 2 star max. The other thing is that the service is pretty bad. They are fairly slow, they don't communicate much, and if you ask for anything, like napkins or a box or whatever, they don't want to give you one. Sure, I understand all those things cost money, but at some level, you expect the simple things like access to napkins. The prices are not outrageous, but this is not an inexpensive habit. $2.65 for a cream puff is a little high. $2.00 per macaroon is competitive, but expensive when you think about paying $2 for one cookie. Aside from those three negative points, I'd say Mochilato hits a home run with the Beard Papa's cream puffs, and the macaroons, and the mochi ice cream. I'm almost ashamed at how much money I've spent at this place. The cream puffs come in a few options: 1) a small bag of 5 for around $4; 2) a regular large cream puff; 3) a chocolate covered large cream puff; 4) something called Paris Brest, which resembles a cream puff donut; and 5) the 5th thing I can't remember because I never order it. All of the cream puffs are filled with this glorious custard and the pastry is crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. The mochi ice creams are great, but I wouldn't say they're any better than prepackaged ones from Trader Joes. It's just that you're eating mochi ice cream, which is good. This used to be my go-to place for snow and cream puffs. However, what happened today was really upsetting and disappointing. My aunt and I came in to order taiyaki after picking up milk tea and donuts. We carried in a box of donut and cups of milk tea without opening or eating or drinking. It was really hot outside, so we decided to sit inside to wait for our food and then leave. We acknowledge that the store doesn't allow outside food or drink, so we didn't open any food or drink that we brought in, and we didn't plan to stay inside after getting the food we order. However, there's a middle-aged guys wearing glasses came out saying that no outside food or drink are allowed. We know that, so we were just waiting for them to finish our food and then leave. It was so annoying that that guy kept standing at the counter and stared at us every single second. Man, what the heck are you doing? Do you really want us to leave without picking up the food we order? What if we brought in a thermal bottle of water and package food? Would you kick us out like that? That sucks. While the food is not even out, that guy came out again and said in a rude way and angry voice: "I said that outside food and drinks are not allowed." I told him that we didn't get the taiyaki back. I came across this place on my way out of Daiso and decided to venture in to see what they had to offer. The restaurant was relatively busy and the menu was very easy to read. I find the Mochilato concept quite interesting: gelato inside mochi! So they get major points on creativity. They even had a wide array of macarons and other pastries to offer so I decided to get a few of their most popular options. I ordered a pistachio macaron, a crème brûlée Mochilato, and a traditional crème puff with vanilla filling. The price came out to around $6 for the entire array so it wasn't too expensive per item. Despite the original flavors, I found that this place sold itself short in the taste department. The macaron was too airy and had a cake-y texture to it. I couldn't even taste the pistachio flavor! As far as the crème brûlée Mochilato, I was more than crushed to take a bite into it and find that the pure temperature of it simply masked the taste of the caramel to the point where I didn't even know if I had ordered vanilla or crème brûlée at all. The papa's beard cream puff was alright. Nothing too spectacular. I suppose if you need a sugar fix then this is a good place for you to visit, but would recommend other locations for better products. read more

I honestly come here all the time for the beard papa cream puffs that they offer. The honey butter or classic with vanilla filling are my go to orders. Order 6 and you get one free. We usually order 6 for a family as one cream puff is pretty big but it's not something that can be shared. Sometimes they take a bit long especially when they're crowded but I just give them a call ahead of time before going in and usually it's done. If you're not a fan of red bean, I think the mango or strawberry would be delicious as well. It melted fast. Regular Mochi ice cream would be just fine. But I will give it a second chance next time I come back. The food is ok, nothing really special about it. But I guess their specialty are the desserts. They also have Beard Papa and macarons as well. Pretty much an all in one place! The cashier forgot my friend's order. What started off as a visit to try their mochi and maybe their shaved ice turned into purchasing 2 mochis and 12 cream puffs. I've always been a fan of Beard Papas cream puffs and was not aware that they branched out to Southern California. The first time I tried it was in San Francisco. What makes these creams puffs so good is the slightly crunch exterior and the custard inside. Check it out!The mochi was freshly made and the flavors creme brulee and tiramasu were spot on. I would have to say as a first time customer, I was definitely overwhelmed by all the choices and the flavors available. It also did not help that they recently removed the prices from their boards, probably to increase them. Overall, a little expensive with the mochis and macaroons being $2 each. Update! Tried the Taiyaki and taiyaki croissant and loved them both! The green tea ice cream they use has that slight hint of bitter and goes so well with the fish shaped bread. It also has a layer of your choice of red bean or custard inside. The taiyaki croissant has about 6 different flavors to choose from and we ordered the ham and cheese. It takes about 10-15 minutes to make. Worth it! Crunchy, flaky, a little sweet on the outside and all savory on the inside. Yummy. read more

Mochi is this place near the Daiso and the Mitsuwa grocery store on Culver in Irvine. It used to be Mochilato but I believe it's changed owners and is now known simply as Mochi. This is the dessert place with a variety of treats to please every palette. They serve Beard Papa's here! They also have Taiyaki which are those fish shaped cones with ice cream, red bean, or custard filling. They also serve macarons, mochi ice cream, and drinks. There is ample seating inside. The cashier was really nice. My friend decided to get a Beard Papa's cream puff with vanilla custard. It was a fairly large cream puff too. The custard cream is delicious.
