The service was very speedy and also they were quite kind when I asked for no sesame. They remade my roll (they were so fast!) and I really appreciated that. As a note, the server did say all the rolls come with sesame, but the menu doesn't say that so be advised. The ambiance was very peaceful and calm and they have AC which is nice on hot days. Upon walking in the service was not very good and continued as such. I ordered the "Hawaiian Roll" which had several types of fish wrapped in cucumber, the idea and ingredients for this roll was great but the execution upon trying to eat it with chopsticks or at all with the way the fish was wrapped up and between the cucumber was messy. I also ordered two pieces of Super White Tuna Sashimi and that was the most disappointing part. The tuna was not the 'melt in your mouth' experience I am used to with this type of fish, it was hard to get bites out of (probably because of fat content) and was very disappointing. The ambiance of the restaurant was oddly spaced out and just kind've strange from what I thought, and again the service I must say was less than helpful. Had this sushi spot on my list to try for quite a while since it is very close to my place. Glad to say that it was enjoyable. I had heard their fish has improved over the years and while I can't comment on how it used to be, I though the quality this time was very good. The only downside I have is their appetizers and soups are a bit on the pricey side. Other sushi spots even give you free salad and miso soup to start, but not here. However, the highlight of the meal is the sushi so no disappointment there. I ordered the King Kong roll since I love anything with eel sauce on it. It was very filling and tasty. Best sushi I've had in this area for sure is Sam's Sushi. No fancy name like 'Harusame' but good food and service. Sam's space isn't too big or too small which is nice, there is table and booth seating is available. Waitresses came right over with menus and water despite it being a pretty busy weeknight for this visit. In addition to eat in, take out seems to be quite popular here seeing bags and bags lined up on a table with customers and probably door dashers coming in often. To start I got the Yakitori - it's a pair of chicken skewers. Pretty good. How about the sushi? The Tiger roll - was very good and was kind of warm as I think it's prepared. Contains tempura salmon, shrimp, crab, avocado, cucumber, sprouts, drizzled with teriyaki sauce Had a few pieces of The King Kong roll - barbeque eel with crab meat, tempura shrimp, mixed green, with tobiko and eel sauce Negihama maki (yellowtail) was the only real let down here. Very inconsistent with actual bits of 'meat' in some of the rolls. Despite that, Sam's is good and ready to go back next sushi time. read more

Went in on Friday night and ordered the sashimi plate. They told us it would take a little longer than normal, and very kindly brought out some complimentary edamame. When the sashimi arrived, I realized why it took so long; it was still partially frozen. The center of the salmon was still crunchy, like the consistency of a sno cone. The tuna had a puddle of pink ice melt under it when I picked it up. The fish across the board was almost flavorless. One of our party got the toro, and it tasted like water with some faint tuna flavor to it. It was pretty unpleasant. I will say our server was wonderful and did a great job. It was my first time at Sam's but while it may have been an off night, I probably won't go back. read more

The atmosphere isn't the nicest here but the sushi was quite good. It's not the best I've had in the city but the nigiri was very fresh. The tuna and albacore were especially good, and the dragon roll was flavorful and crispy too. I'm not sure I'd go back, only because for the price of the Chef's Plate I got I could go to Shiki, which I preferred. But if you're in Ballard, this place is a good pick! Update: Wow ok so the lunch special is where it's at. Now that I live in Ballard I've tried all the nearby places to compare... and yes maybe this isn't my FAV place in all of Seattle but it is certainly the place to go in Ballard. They have pretty good sushi for a normal sushi meal- not too fancy-but fresh and good sized slices of fish that are just right. My only complaint is more likely an endorsement since 99% of every roll on the menu has avocado in it-- but I really don't like avocado. Most people love it, so I just have to order it without and hope the order is right for everyone. The tempura and miso soup is good with good flavor. read more

Sam's Sushi is my family's favorite local sushi spot. They go so often that they're known by name. Many of the employees have been working there for years and are well loved. They are located right in downtown Ballard in a small, casual space where you can watch your sushi being made with windows into the kitchen. We also order a lot of takeout sushi from them, but unfortunately, it's not uncommon that they forget a roll or a soup. I imagine they're very busy getting together all their orders, so they do make mistakes. While I was recently in Seattle, we ordered Sam's twice. Both times, part of the order was missing. Other than that aspect, we absolutely love Sam's! They have excellent quality fish, unique flavor combinations in their rolls, generous sized rolls with a satisfactory amount of fish, and decent prices for Seattle. I always miss Sam's when I'm gone and eager to order it as soon as I'm back! read more

Decently-priced sushi in hip Ballard neighborhood. If you're in Seattle and are in need of sushi, you can venture to the Ballard neighborhood. I swear, there was a sushi place on every corner. My friend and I weren't super hungry but wanted a little something, so we stopped into Sam's. It's located near the library and across from the Starbucks and another condo development. It's not in the "heart" of Ballard, but it's not in a sketch area either haha. Overall, the place looks like a dive, but the sushi is more cheaply priced than other places in the areas! I ordered their tofu roll, a vegetable roll and a maki roll. All were pretty good, but not the best sushi I've ever tried.
