Tried this cafe inside UCSF recently after our ER experience. While I was excited to try new flavors of Sanzo waters (mango and lychee), my loved one ate pizza and drank water. Pizza was okay, we believe it was made onsite and tasted pretty good. Slightly more doughy but satisfying. Especially after not having any food for many hours. For the past couple of months, Moffitt Cafe was my go to for dining. This place stays open when most places close. Every day this place features a special of the day and I especially love the chicken bulgogi and chicken adobo when it was available. The cafe also serves Peet's brand drinks which is amazing. The staff is friendly and they work hard. The main cafeteria which was not open much while visiting there definitely needs an upgrade though but the cafe got me through when I needed it the most. read more

In San Francisco we had a little time for lunch before a UCSF appointment. The front desk had mentioned there was a food court at 500 Parnassus next-door so we thought we would try that. Yes, there was a food court, but it was mobbed at 12:30 and absolutely no tables available. Then I remembered a yelp review for another UCSF cafeteria across the street at 505 Parnassus on the second floor -time for Plan B! We immediately found that there were different rules for entering 505 vs. 400 or 500 Parnassus. You couldn't get in the building unless you worked there or had an appointment that day on the schedule. And the no-nonsense woman interrogating you was not open to sweet talk! Fortunately, my appointment at 400 was on the schedule allowing my wife and I to pass the protocol and gain admittance. Up to the second floor and the UCSF Moffitt Cafe. Much better! Lots of food choices and lots of tables (even two table sections), so no problem finding things and being able to sit and eat. Bonus: the food is good and cheap! We tried the Veggie Lasagna ($4.50) the Apple Ginger Salad ($2.95) New York Cheesecake ($3.50) and the Lemon Tart ($3.75). All were well above average for cafeteria food. And we hadn't seen prices like that for so long we couldn't remember! The prices obviously must be subsidized (great for our meal, until I remembered *we* were the subsidizers). Visiting loved ones staying in a hospital can be trying with the diverse patients with their assortment of ailments. When you are staying over with limited transportation access, it becomes challenging. During the day, drink and food options are abundant with several food and drink stands across the street from the chain juice store, Chinese chain fast food (orange chicken, please), and a Mexican food stand to the national chain sandwich place. However, after 7 pm, well, you're on your own unless you walk down the hill to the neighborhood restaurants. My relatives and a caregiver stayed here several evenings to accompany a close relative and depended on the home brought Thermos and bottle of Arrowhead water to tie them over. In asking a nurse after a couple evenings there, I learned about this place on the 2nd floor of the same building. I brought them both here and we scanned the area which, besides the sales area, housed a cafeteria where other visitors and staff sat and found refuge from the hospital environment. It is nice that they have vending machines for the wee hours for those famished loved ones. Please note the hours when visiting. Just don't expect a dining experience by any means. read more

There are 5 stations to serve food at the cafeteria, however often times only 2 of them are open. One of them serves sandwiches and pizzas, the other one might serve heavily fried food, or it may change to other cuisines where meal options aren't necessarily related to each other (Mexican food with a side of fries). The hours indicate that cafeteria closes at 7 on weekdays and at 3 on weekends, however I haven't seen it open after 3 even on the weekdays. Today I decided to try the pork chili verde for late lunch, it did not look very appetizing, the flavor wasn't any better. It could have used some seasoning. To be honest the food didn't even hit the spot. This isn't the meal you would serve the most dedicated people among our community. Hope to see an improvement without a huge price jump. read more

I went here for an early lunch today, Tuesday, November 19, 2019. I bought two sandwiches and a lemon bar. The sandwiches were cranberry turkey pesto and chicken Italiano on onion focaccia. Pros: 1. The food was delicious. The caramelized onions on the chicken Italiano made the sandwich! 2. The ice and water dispenser is automatic...no touching involved! 3. You don't have to throw away your food debris; just put it on the conveyor belt for them to do it 4. There are plenty of seats by electrical outlets for charging or laptop use. Cons: 1. Thy overcharged me, not giving me my 10% discount and charging me sales tax. Had a less-than-ideal appointment at UCSF and was starving afterward. Faced with at least a one-hour ride back home, I needed to load up on some grub. I was elated to discover Moffitt Cafe right inside the hospital. For hospital food, it was decent-looking - as were the prices. Staff were also very nice. 4-5 stars for the cafe! I also popped over Peet's nextdoor which had incredibly unfriendly people. Exhibit A: when I asked for milk to put in my coffee, one of the baristas told me it was extra. I literally wanted just a splash of milk, as is common practice at any cafe around the world. Every Peet's I've been to also has loads of milks out on the counter. I think the guy was just having a bad day, but come on - 1) you have a people-facing role, and 2) you're in a hospital. Please be nice. read more

The background: UCSF's hospital cafeteria. I eat here pretty much 3-4 times weekly for multiple meals. The details: The food here is broken down by stations: Salad Bar: 3.75 for a boxed salad. Shove all that you can into this box. They have varieties of lettuce: romaine, mixed, spinach along with toppings such as grape tomatoes, cuccumbers, edamame, croutons, corn etc, at least 10 different things you can top your salad with. To give you perspective one "small" box of salad when you throw it on a box can fill more than a plate! It's a good amount for lunch. Soup bar: usually 3 soup selections daily: 1 chili (vegetarian/meat) 1. vegetarian soup always and one regular. 3 sizes of soups you can serve yourself. Prepackaged cold/hot section. They also have premade sandwiches, potato salad, pasta salads, sushi, Desserts: you have a softserve fro yo machine, organic ice cream in a case, pies, cookies, cakes, fruit. You can find yourself some pudding/parfaits in the cold section as well. Beverages: bottled beverages, all day coffee/tea station, mixed juices, coconut water, soda machines. Dim Sum (new introduction). 3 pieces of dim sum $3. They have your basic buns, hargow, shu mai, dumplings. Pizza - by the slice and personal pan. Personal pan ones take a bit to make. Sandwiches - paninis, premade and customized sandwiches for your liking. Grill: hot dogs, burgers, chicken burgers, salmon burger, veggie burger, chicken quesadilla. Sometimes they have a special vietnamese sandwich as well. Here is where you can get fries, curly fries, onion rings or even sweet potato fries. In the morning at the grill they do omelets and pancakes. Taco/Burrito: Daily selections of beef, chicken, pork street tacos and buritos. 3 special Chef's stations: They have options that rotate and are always coming up with new combos: Pho, Dosas (meatless monday), fried chicken, chicken dishes, pulled pork sandwiches, ribs, chille rellenos, lasanaga, pasta, pork with apple glaze Sides involve: brown/white rice, veggies (mixed, green beans, asparagus, etc.) A meal deal will be around $7 Breakfast package: my favorite thing in the morning. For less than $4, you can get 2 eggs, sausage, potatoes, toast. yum! The verdict: I'm really happy with eating here, they have SO many options. They're vegetarian friendly, they try to offer healthy options. The staff is nice and efficient. Lunch is when Moffit shines. Breakfast is good too. Dinner is a bit toned down. We tried the breakfast burrito with sausage, egg, cheese and potatoes. We also got separate plates of eggs, chicken sausage, hash browns and an egg scramble with spinach and mushrooms. The oatmeal ($1.90 for a large) was also a great complement with brown sugar and raisins. The breakfast burrito ($4.50) was very hearty. It was very tasty and tasted fresh. The hash browns were one of my faves because it was so crispy. I think they have a fantastic selection for breakfast and it's very cheap. We paid around 15 bucks for all the food! Best hospital cafeteria food ever! Breakfast is cheap and delicious, and there is so much variety with lunches. Breakfast: You can get it for less than $3! I had scrambled eggs, potatoes, and sausage links for less than $3. Lunch: They switch up the cuisines daily. However, the burgers/fries, sandwiches, and the salad bar remain consistent. I love when they serve Indian food (naan and curry) and Filipino food (lumpia, sisig, skewers). They even serve sushi, pho bowls, and spring rolls. I don't recommend the spring rolls and sushi though tbh since I have had better for cheaper. Overall, this is a great hospital cafeteria. Trust me, I've been to many. I was really surprised with how good the food selection is at the Moffitt Cafe at UCSF Parnassus. Here's a short list of what you can find there: Breakfast Quesadillas, Bibimbap with Gochujang Chicken, Pork Sisig, Turkey Banh Mi, Pizza, and handmade Vietnamese Spring Rolls. The list goes on and on. The food here definitely tops UCSF Mission Bay's Shorenstein Cafe. This place is a good choice for food considering all that is close to UCSF (within walking distance). Some of the pros are as follows: * Good selection of food choices * Nutrition info posted and available online * Prices are good overall * Lots of areas to sit and eat * TV and outlets for your laptop/phone etc. * Well-lit and allows natural light in (important when you are deprived of such things while working indoors all hours). Some of the cons for me were: * Charged the same price for tea as I was coffee which made no sense as it was literally the size of a cup with hot water lol. * Chairs are extremely uncomfortable and the floors make it difficult to maneuver them. One older gentleman next to me almost fell trying to get up and move it. Unsafe. * I feel like having small containers of chicken for salads at almost $4 is a bit much considering it's pre-weighed and the salad bar is slightly limiting. * TV had nothing but CNN pipped through which honestly was a bit of a turn off. Animal Planet would have been better lol. * Food stations that had actual foods available were spread out and it was kind of all over the place. So while just trying to navigate what I wanted, I wasted a good 5min walking back and forth as did many others. When you're in a time crunch, this isn't a great thing to have happen. I would expect when it's very busy that more stations are open (I went about 4:30pm) it may be occupied by more options but learning the lay of the land here is crucial if you're in a hurry. So there are some totally positives and moderate negatives about this cafe. It's financially reasonable for most options. I got soup (bland but that's ok, nothing a bit of salt and pepper didn't fix), salad filled with different options (what looked appealing to me) and paid about $10.50 I then went back and had a snickerdoodle cookie and cup of hot water for my tea and spent almost $4 which seemed a bit crazy considering what I just spent on my meal. I was hungry, it was a long day, and I didn't care at that moment so I paid for it lol. I'd for sure go back again as the Subway is usually where I go for lunch but it gets boring and that place is so hot at times, it can be quite annoying. Very inconvenient with serving. There two people before me and the first person got her bowl overflowed, the other guy before me didn't get full bowl. And neither did I unfortunately. The server also almost gave me pork instead of tofu as I requested twice. I don't eat pork. First, he dropped my bowl and his colognes noticed and made fun of him. He didn't change my bowl , didn't even apologize. I raised if I have to pay more if I asked for more tofu; his answer was "oh we only serve certain amount." Fair enough. But still, for paying the same amount $8.63, each serving is different. Maybe he likes the girl she was serving the first time and somehow didn't like me or the other guy in front me. Moffitt Cafeteria, also known as Moffitteria, is a popular lunch destination for UCSF employees and students because it's cheap and convenient. However, at lunch time, it can get really packed. For the longest time, the Moffitteria was under construction, but just a few days ago, to my amazement, the construction is done. The Moffitteria is absolutely gorgeous (I guess that's where my tuition money is going to), and resembles a dining hall--kind of like UCB's Crossroads dining hall for anyone that's been there. There is ample seating for everybody and isn't as cramped as it was pre-construction. Food still tastes the same as it was before--normal salty cafeteria food that lacks presentation or delighful flavors. But it does the job--it fills you up and at a pretty decent, cheap price. I usually order the hamburger since it's one of the cheapest items on the lunch menu. As a starving student, I like to keep lunch under 5 bucks, and the hamburger does the job. For breakfast, I like getting the $3.44 Out the Door breakfast since it comes with eggs, toast, bacon -or- sausage, and potatoes. As fellow friend and yelper Gloria C. says, it's a great deal...and it is! For those who have UCSF IDs, you can register your ID online and put money on it, that way you can save 10% on your orders at the Moffitteria. That way you're saving on tax with a little added 0.5% discount (since sales tax in SF is 9.5%). If you are ever at the UCSF campus and you're hungry for a cheap bite to eat, this is the place to go to. Walk up the stairs of either UCSF Medical Center or Med Sci Building to the 2nd floor, and you'll be right there. I suggest coming here after 1PM when the normal "lunch rush" has died down. Apart from the reliable sandwiches, salad, Asian cuisines, Japanese rice with eel, the chef's table changes the menu everyday and serves dishes such as dosa, curry, dim sum, etc. While the quality is more of 3 stars, the most amazing part is you should get a receipt, because in addition to posting on the big screen on the dish's calories, the nutritional values with calories, fat, carbs and sodium are fully listed. So you will know how disappointed I was when I found out the 3 pieces of dim sum were 586 calories, the shrimp curry 546 calories, rice 357 calories, and the 5 wings 1402 calories!!!! So apart from the water, I just ate 2891 calories for lunch! That simply can't be healthy. Lesson learned, look at the TV screen first before ordering or keep some for snacks later. read more

If you are a student, visitor, or patient in need of a quick break, snack, or caffeine fix - you want to hit this express joint by 11pm. SITUATION While cramming for my health law exam, my eyes started burning and my brain went totally dead. Unsure how the night would end, I befriended a security guard that was kind enough to point me in the right direction: 2nd floor = vending machines that takes credit cards and contains mad caffeine. However, around the corner, you can cop some Peet's and eats. PEET'S FULL Peet's coffee menu in a teaching hospital is freak'n genius! If you don't know: Peet's is California cult coffee for the loyal who have been around longer than Blue Bottle, Intelligensia, and others I don't care to mention right now. Despite what my checkin status looks like, I really am more of a tea person and only go hard on coffee a few weeks around exams [though caffeine has clinically been shown to reduce brain function - they say it's better than killing my brain with booze]. I came here craving and old sweet classic: ordered a mocha with an extra shot of espresso, when the barista shot me a curious look and replied "it already comes with two shots, but I'm happy to give you another." I looked at the clock. Already 9 pm and violating my "no caffeine after 4 rule," I thanked her for look'n out. I'm not a machine. My guaranteed good time drink would have to turn another crappy day around because I needed this one to end at 2am. INFO OVERLOAD So, they give you a receipt with all of the calorie and daily intake percentages. Not sure what to do with this info, too tired to really figure what it meant, I put it here for you. So, I paid $3.63 for 307 calories and 5 grams of fat, 43 carbs and 213 mg's of sodium. That would be 12%, 14% and 10% DRV or something, if I ate 2k calories per day... assuming that I ordered my drink with reduced fat milk and 8T whipped cream (60 calories). Well, ordered w/ no whip and I don't know the milk fat content. I'm into nutrition, but calorie counting is not my thing; I guess if it's yours that's a score? For me, it caused more confusion than clarity - made me wonder if I should actually start counting....mmm... nah. Not complaining about this cafeteria. There are so many options and it is one of the better hospital cafeterias I have been to. Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a hospital cafeteria if you don't work here, visiting to be seen at the medical center, or visiting family members. They have different ethnic foods daily. To name a few, pork sisig, chicken barbecue skewers, pancit, adobo, and fresh veggie lumpia are served for Filipino days. I have seen Korean barbecues and Indian curries as well. There is a grill which can satisfy your fried food cravings and burgers. There is a salad station where you can make your own salad by packing all the ingredients that you can into one container, all for about $6. Soups change daily as well. This cafeteria is great because it has their menu online, so if you are not feeling the menu that day, you can go across the street for other options. Everything in this cafeteria has nutrition health facts. Calories or sugar content is what I look at specifically. The cafeteria is designed very health-centric like everywhere else in SF. So for that reason, sorry, you will not find a single sugary beverage here! That represents how SF gets things done about policy changes and banning sugary drinks in major public facilities. If you really want sugary drinks, take a visit to the truck cart outside for your sugary cravings. The only downside is that it is certain entrees are overpriced. read more

By far one of the best hospital cafeterias I have ever been to. And, they are open into the evening hours, not like other hospital cafeterias that shut down their grill by 3:00PM. I've had delicious salmon burgers and tuna melts from their grill, vegetarian samosas, grilled Panini sandwiches, and vegetarian chili. All great! The grill at breakfast time is great too...yummy blueberry pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. Their salad bar fits my nutrition wants...organic, with enough veggie choices to make it complete, and they have crumbled blue cheese (yum). For added protein options they have pre-portioned chicken or tofu boxes to purchase separately at the end of the salad line. There are two sized containers that you can pick from and people stuff either sized box to the brim since they charge for the size of the box and not by the weight (excellent). Also, their Peet's coffee is excellent. I bring in my own beverage cup and they only charge you for a small size which is cool. If you want to avoid a serious crowd going after 1:30pm seems to be a bit better. read more

Moffitt is better than your typical cafeteria food. It definitely doesn't have an old cafteria with long, boring lines. There's definitely lines, but it has a more upbeat vibrant atmospheres. There's different places where you can get items. Overall, the items aren't extremely overpriced. They are reasonable. My main go-to items there are the salads, fries and breakfast items. Salads - it's not by the weight but by the box. So I jam pack my box really full. If you can't close it, they charge you extra. If you want jalapenos in your salad, go to the salsa bar and get some jalapenos. I love the edamame peas, so I add a lot of it. It isn't as extensive as Whole Foods salad bar but it has all the essential, basic ingredients to make a tasty salad! I love mushrooms in mine. I also just go for the apple cider with oliver oil for my dressing. I don't go for any of the premade ones. Fries - They are a little bit on the pricier side. They are frozen and they just deep fry them, but fries are fries. I like their curly fries. Yum. Breakfast items - BEST THING THERE! So cheap. Are you having a slow and boring morning in need for breakfast food? For $3.50, you can two scoop of eggs, two bacon or sausage, two scoop of hashbrown or potato triangles, and two slices of bread. If you don't want scrambled eggs, you can go to the grill and ask them to make your egg the way you want and go back to the breakfast area to get your items you want. For students/faculty/staff - I like the fastpay option. You get a discount when you buy items, and you just hold your card to the reader and it reads it. So easy. If you plan on eating here quite often, I think fastpay will be worth it. So your cheap breakfast items will be slightly cheaper!! Woohoo! I am going to miss this place when I leave SF. read more

But that would be an uninformative review, so I will write a real review to explain why Moffitt really does deserve 4 stars. If you think hospital cafeterias are sub-par, think again! Since everyone is so health-conscious, busy, and over-worked, Moffitt does an excellent job of serving healthy, fast, and tasty food. There's a lot of variety at the different stations: pizza, soup, salad bar, a daily entrée specials section, tacos/burritos, a burger grill, and grab-and-go stuff. They even have special events sometimes. Of course, not everything is nutrient-packed diet food, but they do have a daily healthy plate (or it's called something like that), and all the menu items have calories counts as a quick estimate of what you're eating. I have been eating here daily for many years. This is one of the better hospital cafeterias I have seen anywhere. They have a rotating menu of food choices, including ethnic specialties. Their breakfast grill items are probably their strongest suit. I would recommend this cafeteria to anyone looking for a quick bite in the inner Sunset area. Way too expensive for what you get! The bahn mi sandwich had hardly enough to feed a mouse between the buns, yet cost as much as a foot long sub! Other meals are better, but so expensive. The best values are the salad box*, the pizza (but it lacks enough pizza sauce), and the stuffed baked potato. * One price for all you can stuff into their salad box! That's not bad. The words "hospital cafeteria" can be the least appealing words your ever heard. But on the reall, UCSF has some good eats. There is always a late selection of food at breakfast and lunch, the two meals I've been able to enjoy here. If you finna get your typical breakfast foods, like oatmeal, made to order pancakes and omelets, fruit, a donut, and sometimes the ethnic Longanisa entree, this is thee spot fo dat. The breakfast menu stays pretty consistent. For lunch, you have your basic grill with thee burgers and dogs, a spring roll section, the deli sammich side, dim sum corner, pizza area, & long line for thee salad bar. There are two sections the rotate their specials and suck weekly. They have something for erryone - vegetarians, gluten free, the hungry. I mean, I would hope errythang was healthy here since it's a hospital but ya know. Prices aren't that bad either, affordable for all. The service workers here are friendly and great to work with as well! They know their regulars and will treat you well as such. Expect long lines at peak hours and difficulty seating, sometimes. Elevator activity gets a little crazy too, esp for lunch. Plan ahead! Overall a good place to grub on campus! read more

For a hospital cafeteria, the options seem to be high quality, good value, and wide in variety. For a total $9 plus tax, I got both the Korean vegetables with tofu and the Italian cod. I was pleased to see that they also offer Indian food. My meal was filling; it was money well-spent. Sadly, the cafe closes at 6:30 or 7 PM, and the vending options, while somewhat creative, aren't nearly as appealing as the daytime offerings.
