I really really want to like this place because I love Thai Food. We've eaten here two times and the food tasted delicious. If you are impatient or in a hurry don't bother. I am a bit concerned with the quality and duration of time she is keeping the chicken although. I've had an iffy bite in there and wife experienced less than stellar bathroom visits ( 3 times) in the middle of last night. Him and his wife are very nice but clearly inexperienced. How this place is still in business is beyond me. Maybe Penn Valley is just that desperate for food, any food. Maybe the owners don't have very much invested in it to lose. Maybe its a tax write off or a money laundering operation. Or maybe that poor Thai lady (who can cook, somewhat, I'll give her that) knows she's better off in a restaurant kitchen than home all day with her nasty ass husband. He's never run a restaurant, he says. Hello, Captain Obvious. He still isn't running one, in my opinion. They finally (what, 3 years later?) printed menus, but guess what, no prices. For those, you have to look at the chalkboard, which also serves as their kid's handwriting practice board. Ask for a take out menu and you get a gruff brush off, as if he couldn't be bothered. Look on Yelp, is what he says. Or you can take a picture of the board. He is the sourest, most unpleasant person I've ever dealt with. Usually the folks running a restaurant are happy to see you walk in their doors. They greet you, all friendly like. And so on. Not this guy. He hates you. Hates. You. Don't worry, it's not JUST you. He hates everything. Especially his restaurant. It shows, dude, it shows. He'll tell you that there's at least a 25 minute wait. So you show up after 25 minutes, and he tells you its at least 30 minutes. And he's more pissed about it than you are. Really? Hmm. Long prep time: must be worth the wait. (It isn't.) Rather expensive: must be worth the price. (It isn't.) It's Thai. Even crappy Thai food is still edible, usually. And this is one step above crappy, but its nothing special. Except that it's in Penn Valley, where there's not many choices. (I wish we could eat at Twelve 28 everyday, but alas...). Warning: tomatoes in EVERY dish. I had no idea there could be tomatoes in Tom Kha, or Pad Thai. Who knew? This place could be saved, if only that guy would go ahead and have his heart attack and leave the restaurant to someone who knows customer service. read more

Just gave this another try??? Showed up at 4:50 Saturday night. Took 40 minutes and had two orders in front of mine . Was told 22 minutes yes 22 minutes. Person ordered after me and got food before me. Good food but please get some help . One person cooking and one person taking orders. Really need additional help especially on Sat .night. I don't like to write negative reviews but last night we ordered takeout from Moi's. The wait was one hour which we expected and didn't mind. When we arrived home the chicken soup was lukewarm. The vegetables and chicken in the soup where cut very large chunks, when we've had the soup at other places they were cut into smaller chunks so you could fit it in your mouth. We also ordered chicken satay which was very dry and pad Thai was dry too, we had to add some broth and vegetables to make it more edible. The pineapple rice tasted pretty good, it was heavily seasoned which I don't mind but other people may not like it. I'm hoping the owners read this and maybe make a few adjustments to make the food better. We also got the fresh spring roll that had mostly ice burg lettuce filling. read more

The food when I first started going was really good. Now it's hit or miss. The woman that works here is always very sweet and you can tell her heart is in the business. Her husband(?) however always seems to be irritated and not know much about customer service. Im putting 4 stars because it is very obvious that they are both trying, the food is never bad just sometimes not as good as the last. read more

My family has been several times since the opening and have loved the food every time! Moi's food is consistently fresh and delicious. Personally we did not mind the wait for our food as every dish came out perfect. I would recommend every dish we've had, fried spring rolls, pot stickers (with an amazing sauce), pad thai, chicken satay, shrimp chow mein (the shrimp were large and very fresh), fried rice, red curry beef. Always great food! Prices are very reasonable, produce is fresh, spices are perfect. We are GLUTEN-FREE, the Drunken Noodle (your choice of meat (or not)), and the Stir-Fry Ginger (again your choice of meat (or not)) are both safe, and both are delicious. Pad Thai. Pad Thai. Pad Thai!! So good have to say it 3 times! Place reminds me of those Gem spots in the city only locals know about. Service is fast, food is authentically great. Even the soda machine was out last time I went here(of course it was fixed that next week I went in), it just screams HIDDEN GEM! If you are lucky one of the owners kids will be out front handing out FREE smoothie samples. Definitely a new favorite spot for Penn Valley and you don't have to travel up the hill for a good meal! Best Thai food in Nevada County, bar none. Moi's food is fresh, delicious and prepared with love. So far I have tried the Chow Mein, Pineapple Fried Rice, Fresh Spring Rolls, and Spicy Eggplant, all of which were beautiful, fragrant, and incredibly tasty. The family that runs the place are warm, friendly people whose presence creates a welcoming atmosphere and "down home" dining experience--it's as though you are dining in the home of dear friends. This little Thai restaurant has some of the best Thai food in town. The food is always great and priced reasonably. I had the pineapple chicken fried rice and my wife had the chicken curry. Both meals were some of the best Thai food in Nevada county. Some times when they are busy the food service is slower but that's because they are a two person show but it's worth the wait. I went to this place because it was the only open Thai food in mid afternoon. I drove just 15 minutes from Grass Valley and it was so beyond worth it! The food is exceptional. I've been to the Thai food restaurants locally and their food doesn't compare to Mois. Truly, I prefer this Thai food to all others. It's so fresh and flavorfull. This review is from several weeks ago and I have just found the time to write it. First off I do not like to leave these kinds of reviews. I can't comment on the food because I was not able to actually order or try it. I was taking my father out for dinner and we decided to make the trek to this restaurant based on positive reviews. We got a bit lost trying to find so I called to ask for directions. The man who answered sounded bothered and asked me to hold. Put the phone down and never picked up again. I could hear the restaurant noise. I was a bit put off but we finally found the place and were ready for some great food!! Looked clean. Got in and sat. The guy at the counter seemed annoyed. He didn't really greet me and seemed stressed. He was walking out of kitchen and barked that it would be 45 minutes plus from time of order before food ready. It was so abrupt I didn't even think he could possibly be talking to me!! As if I was a hassle and he didn't want to take any more orders. I felt uncomfortable and just walked back to table. Told Dad we were leaving. We went and had a wonderful dinner elsewhere. Sadly I can't comment on the food. First impressions mean so much. I will not go back .... read more

I am in love with Moi....her cooking needs to be celebrated. I have eaten the eggplant the last four times I was there it was so good. She prepares the food with love....be patient. It is worth waiting for because it is prepared when your order is taken. I have eaten Thai food in Nevada City, Grass Valley and New York City, and I am grateful that finally there is a 4 star Thai restaurant in Penn Valley. Honestly, never in a MILLION years would I ever had thought a Thai Restaurant would come into Nevada County, let alone next to Holiday Market in Penn Valley. We were visiting my family for the Fourth of July so we popped in to grab some takeout. We ordered about nine dishes and loved every one of them. The red curry was just a tad bit more spicy than the yellow but we enjoyed them equally. I will definitely go back on our next visit to get food. Tonite we enjoyed takeout for the first time at this restaurant and were pleasantly surprised. The food was ready to go in 15 minutes. So happy Moi's Thai is here in Penn Valley! The food is delicious. The spring rolls are incredibly fresh and tasty, the Red Curry is perfectly balanced and just spicy enough... The staff is great! The only minor complaint is that it is a bit on the slow side (I expect that will change with time) and the atmosphere in the restaurant is not as cozy as it could be. read more
