While on vacation in New York, my husband and I randomly found Gerbasi Ristorante. We were greeted outside by George who was to be our waiter; he was excellent in both his demeanor and professionalism. Above all my husband and I found the food to be superb beginning with the dipping sauce and continuing with the speciality salad and main entree of pasta and sausage. My family & I went for dinner after my little girls baptism. They were very accommodating , we did make reservations a week in advance but, had to alter the number a few times. We got there early a party of 14 and they were ready for us. Food was good , very attentive staff and great atmosphere. My only complaint is that is was quite hot in the restaurant. The day was one of those super muggy nasty august days. The staff did all they could by putting out fans but it didn't help much. I enjoyed a fabulous lunch today ay Gerbasi Restaurant. Everything from the octopus appetizer to buratta , eggplant to lobster, salmon and tiramisu was delicious. The first time we ate at this restaurant was in March of 2020. It was literally before the covid shutdown. My husband, myself and the kids could not find meat in any supermarket and we went to Arthur Ave to buy meat from the butcher. As my husband waited 2 hours in line ....the girls and I were starving and walked into Gerbasi. We had such an amazing lunch. After the shutdown we were happy to order take out from this restaurant. The first day indoor dining was open at 25% capacity we showed up for lunch. We also have ordered trays of food for small gatherings over the Christmas holidays. My husband loves the pork chops. To me, all of Arthur Ave is a bit overpriced considering it offers good but relatively standard American-Italian food. That being said, I thought this place offered a five star experience for Arthur Ave and a four star experience compared to restaurants at a similar price point in Manhattan. A guy was outside the restaurant drawing people in which sometimes makes me skeptical of what's to come, but it ended up being excellent. I tasted the chicken parmesan, the penne vodka and a special pasta which little pasta parcels stuffed with ricotta in a pink sauce bolognese. Mmm. The special was great but also $24.95. I would give the dish 5 stars if it were 7-8 bucks cheaper. The bar is pretty high for a $25 pasta dish. The chicken parm was classic and tasty. I appreciate their crispy breading and tasty red sauce. The side pasta was also surprisingly nice. They use a flavorful tomatoey sauce which makes all the difference, I too often find side pasta sauces to be watery. Great service. I appreciated the waiter's patience and good recommendations. Had a wonderful light meal at Gerbasi last night with a friend. Very nice heated backyard patio. Ordered glasses of red wine which were very good for the price. Ordered 2 appetizers - clams oreganto, 7 clams which were tender perfectly baked; and grilled octopus. The octopus portion was large and almost melted in your mouth, the portion was large and was served with an excellent tomato salsa. I think the best octopus I have ever had. The bread was a rustic loaf and served with a tomato olive oil dipping sauce. Excellent service definitely going to return. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. For starters, the service was extremely terrible. As a vegetarian, I ordered a penne vodka pasta and I asked multiple times to make sure there was no meat. The waiter insisted that it was vegetarian even after the plate came. After eating some of it I realized that it did contain meat and they were not helpful at all and still charged me for the plate I did not eat. To add to this terrible experience the drinks were made horribly. They were watered down and bland and completely unappetizing to even look at. If you want to have a terrible dinner experience I would recommend this place. If you like being happy go somewhere else. read more

MUST READ TO END. I am a Fordham student/ Arthur Ave resident and let me say this is easily my least favorite italian restaurant, on Arthur and perhaps ever. I've been here before and tried to avoid it because I didn't like it the first time. But, We went here because it was the only place that had room for our large party on a busy weekend night. We waited a while for bread and water, longer for appetizers and even longer for our food. When we asked for more bread because the food was taking so long, the waiter just said "that's a lot of bread" and busied himself with other things until our meal came out. The wine was ok, the calamari app and caprese app were good, but the most shockingly egregious culinary experience I've ever had on Arthur Ave happened when the main course arrived. My boyfriend and I split lobster ravioli (they were good but only had 5 small pieces for $25) and a pepperoni pizza. HAND TO GOD THIS PIZZA WAS 100% A FROZEN PIZZA FROM THE SUPER MARKET. This thing had to be Digiorno, this is not an exaggeration. I thought this would be unimaginably sacrilegious on Arthur Ave but we both agreed this was in fact what they had served us. I will not be going back here ever again. The person calling people to come in should be a warning enough, because obviously they need something to help fill the dining room and it certainly isn't the food. read more

I came here with a friend because this was the only place open after 10pm. We were gracefully greeted and seated. The white wine was good and adequately chilled, but I was a little disappointed with the meal. I got a large plate of various vegetables for $20. It was ok, but worth maybe half of that. The thing that annoyed me was that the server sucked his teeth when I asked him for butter and then brought out some that I struggled to unwrap. It's not a lot to ask for. It is painful to write a bad review of Gerbasi, because the people here are so nice. The restaurant is handsome and the outdoor seating is beautiful. Nevertheless, the food is not good. We ordered steak, pasta, chicken, seafood- everything was under seasoned and flavorless. The sauce here tastes like unseasoned tomato paste from a can. The service isn't great either- it's painfully slow and we were one of 3 tables at 5pm. I hope that they fix the food because I am rooting for them. Unfortunately, I am not hopeful- they told us that they were open for 9 months (like they did for the last reviewer, only it is 2 months later). I think that it's an excuse for why the place is so empty- and with an aggressive carnival barker out in the street roping people in it shouldn't be the ghost town that it is. read more

I had a bad experience here recently for lunch. Service: We were on a tight time schedule, and were very explicit about that with the nice man at the door; he assured us we could be in and out in under 30 minutes. Not! It became quite stressful as we were watching the clock and drumming our fingers on the table wondering when our food was going to arrive. Once it did, we had to almost immediately ask for the check and containers to take the food to-go. Also, we asked the maître d' (who looks like he's been there since the Truman Administration) if the pizzas were big enough for two, and he sniffed that they are personal pizzas, and we should each order our own. Wrong! One would have been plenty, especially since they left us no time to eat. Food: My lunch-mate's cheese pizza was ordinary, nothing special. I ordered a pizza with cured pork and fresh figs, and simply did not like it. It was also undercooked because they could see that I was getting stressed about the time and they took it out of the oven too soon. Ambiance: We were the only two diners in the restaurant for lunch at 12:15 p.m. on a Thursday (which makes you wonder further why it took so long to fix two small pizzas); so, no buzz or people-watching. It was hot and there was no airflow. The music kept cutting in and out. I did not enjoy being there. Bottom line: When the man on the sidewalk out front tries to persuade you to come into Gerbasi, keep on walking! read more

This is an authentic Bronx Little Italy restaurant with amazing food. The ambiance is terrific. The staff is so friendly, by the time you leave, you feel like family. I have to repeat how amazing the food is. I went with my wife and my parents for our second year wedding anniversary. I tried a little of what everyone ordered and the food was marvelous. the deserts were to die for. My mother is a flight attendant and flies to Italy a lot and rarely eats at Italian restaurants here in the states because they don't compare to the ones in Italy. We ordered clams oreganato, minestrone and calamari for apps. All delicious with the great bread Arthur Avenue is know for. I had a special with broccoli rabe and beans and instead of the sausage they used chicken breasts for me; My friend had the osco bosco and the kids cheese pizzas. Everyone thought their food was excellent! A fine robust but smooth Chianti Classico rounded out a wonderful dining experience. Waiters were very friendly and accommodating. Came in here on Saturday night - right away we were greeted with a smile, this place has a wonderful ambiance. Ordered drinks to start with, and a few appetizers. First the bread come out with a superb dipping sauce. For appetizers we ordered baked clams, calamari, mozzarella caprese and grilled octopus. Everything was ridiculously good, the calamari was light and crisp and the grilled octopus was perfect one of the best I ever had. For entrees we ordered the shrimp parmigiana and gnocchi. The shrimp parmigiana was impeccable, I almost licked my plate clean. Make sure you leave room for dessert because the tiramisu is to die for. I get it's Arthur Ave and there are way too many Italian restaurants in the area and it's becoming touristy. Therefor, I came in this place with ultra low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The inside was nice, dimly lit and pleasant. Ordered chicken Marsala and it was delicious as was the side of penne marinara. Equally good was the tagliolini with shrimp because the pasta tasted like it was freshly made. Service was pretty good and prices were cheaper than going to what's left of Little Italy in Manhattan. After reading the other reviews, I feel like I was in a different restaurant. Went here with friends after a mass at Mt. Carmel Church down the block. To say the food was horrible, would be a compliment. Everything we had was awful! This was not the first time I was there but was for my friends. In the past the food was very good however prior to this times, the food had changed a little. This visit however, the food was awful. Will not go back. The waiter did say they are having a very hard time hiring staff, but the cook is the same, so that should not have any bearing on the food. Now this makes me really sad because it was one of my favorite restaurants in Little Italy. They were out of linguine and clams, out of branzino. Not a terrific start so that set the tone. I had an appetizer of calamari and artichoke but it was tasteless, oily with a unappealing coating. I asked if the buisness changed owners because it didn't seem the same. I found out its a great American story where a Mexican bus boy worked his way up and recently purchased the restaurant. Good for him. Maybe he just needs time to get adjusted not sure but my visit this time was a disappointment. I traveled 2hrs for my favorite spot but never again. read more

The main dining room is very simple. I really like the outdoor seating in the back though. Eventhough there's no view, the draping makes for a nice ambiance. We tried a mixed appetizer platter as well as a special margarita. It's not even on the drink menu but it tastes delicious. I think it has champagne in it, YUMMY! It is hard to find an Italian restaurant with a large array if choices other then the typical italian pasta/meat/fish dishes. This restaurant has a large selection for those who may want a green appetizer or someone at the table who wants a healthy large salad for dinner. In the nice weather, the outdoor section in the back is perfect for a group. They also have a hidden downstairs that could be really intimate with a group (but I have never seen them serve anyone down there). The staff loves their job and they are all from Italy (which can be rare with a lot of Albanian workers on Arthur Avenue these days). read more
