Taste: their oxtail hand pie is extremely tasty. The crispy outer layer is a really nice contrast for its filling, and the sauce on the side adds a little fun kick to it Their sweet corn latte (not pictured ) on the other hand is a little underwhelming for the concept. I would've liked a stronger coffee taste, it is milk based but the ratio was a little off. Location: perfect walking distance, the main entrance is closed so you have to go around the building through an alley. Service: great service, they took my order in such a timely manner despite being very busy on a Saturday morning.

Would have given 5 stars if we talked about taste alone and not considering the kitchen smell that lingered within the venue and unfortunately all over me post dining there (yep kinda deep-frowned). Service was amazing as they got the foods freshly made to order yet relatively short waiting time; besides all the attendants were so helpful. We started with their Brown Butter Jollypong Cookie, whose texture was more cakey than chewy, but serving good sweet and savory mix with the unique cereal flavor as well. We then got the PBL&T and Gochujang Short Ribs Onigiri, both of which got us sold! The PBL&T totally worth the price being huge and filling with thick juicy pork belly slices. The veggies were so fresh and the kimchi mayo sauce easily became the highlight. The onigiri had spicy hint but so good as well. It's prolly bigger than your regular onigiri and packed with toppings. Would surely come back but wished they'd get the exhaust system improved.

Highland Park's first Korean cafe/market is here, Mokja! It's located on York, tucked behind YiCha, so it's a little hard to find if you don't already know it's in the back of the building. But as soon as you walk through the clear doors, you're greeted by a delicious and overwhelming scent of garlic and coffee. If you weren't hungry before, you will be now! Shelves on the left are stocked with snacks, dried goods, sauces, and merch; to your right, there's a fridge full of bottled drinks, prepackaged food, and sides, plus the kitchen area. Walk straight and you'll find the coffee and pastry counter, and in the left corner, my personal favorite, a DIY ramen station. Mokja is the popular new kid in the neighborhood, so expect a line! If you come during a slow time, there are a few small tables in the middle and a tall counter along the left wall. Utensils, napkins, and water are conveniently self-serve near the ramen station. What I tried: - Sweet corn latte (espresso was solid, but didn't catch much sweet corn flavor) - Mayak egg sando (I've never met an egg sando I didn't like: fluffy, full of smashed and boiled egg goodness) - Grain bowl with added pork belly (great flavors, generous portion, worth the price) Friendly staff and good music round out the experience. I'll definitely be back soon to raid the fridge and snack shelves!

Look out HLP - there's a new place in town and it's called Mokja, which means "Let's eat" in Korean. This Koren Café & Market is a sister establishment of Be Bright Coffee & YiCha. Founded by Chef Debbie Lee (YiCha) & Frank & Michelle La (Be Bright Coffee) this hybrid space combines a modern café, with a street food haven, and a curated Asia grocery market. Offerings include build-your-own ramen, sandwiches (Mayak Egg Sandos), specialty Korean dishes, grab & go Banchan, pastries, exotic lattes (Misugaru latte), and more. There is also a retail section with gourmet products from AAPI-owned businesses. I arrived an hour after they officially opened their doors. The place was packed. There are a few tables to sit at and a standing bar along the wall. The chefs were cooking up a storm. It smelled so good. While in line, I watched Frank skillfully prepare lattes with care. I wanted to try the Banana Matcha Latte but was on a time crunch so I got one of their signature pastries instead - Kimchee Cheese Biscuit. The girl at the register was darling. Keeping up with the pace with a smile. The biscuit was still warm when I got home, which is a few blocks away. The top and bottom were crunchy with a cheddar cheese shell. Inside it was soft, dense, & moist. It was so good and very flavorful. I could taste the cheese and seasonings. I do recommend. I'm going back tomorrow for that Banana Matcha Latte and most definitely another biscuit. *The entrance is in the back. Enter through the alley between Ave 58 & 57. Take the black elevator down to 1. *Metered street parking or metered parking in the lot.

I LOVE MOKJA!!! ...and it seems like everyone else does too based on the crowd I saw on a Sunday afternoon. What is Mokja? It's a combination unique coffee house / hip casual Korean café / Korean food market where everyone from customers to staff seem happy to be. Shelves are stocked with a combination of hard to find Korean snacks, hip products from local businesses, and housemade Korean food... which is fun for me as a fan of K-dramas who wants to try everything I hear about on tv... ...speaking of which, they have the coolest ramen station where you can pick from a variety of instant Korean ramyeons, add toppings and hot water to instantly enjoy on the spot! Their coffee drinks use Be Bright Coffee beans, which I love and they have so many unique offerings, like sweet corn latte! I had the Omija Sparkler which might just rival my beloved Espresso Tonic for the crown of Favorite Drink! Mokja is a GREAT addition to an already cool stretch of Highland Park and from what I hear, it's owned by the same crew that runs the Korean gastropub Yi Cha, which is next door. Welcome to the neighborhood, Mokja!

This place serves Korean comfort food and great coffee. Their Egg Salad Sando is bomb! The braised oxtail hand pie is a must-try, the outside of the pie is so fluffy and the inside was flavorful! For drinks, their sweet corn latte and matcha latte were good too ! The cafe is very spacious , bright and welcoming, they even have an elevator for ADA access, making it very convenient got people like me who use a walker or wheelchair. Love this place !

I got the oxtail hand pie to go - highly recommend! It was so flaky and buttery and the filling was a delicious mix of meat and veggies. I saw the snack shelf on the way out, so I'll definitely get something from there next time. Also excited to try the ramen! The cashier was so kind and helped me choose what to order.

Everything we ordered was delicious! The egg salad sando was a pleasant surprise, especially with the beautiful soft-boiled egg. The oxtail hand pie was also excellent. The pastry had a unique flavor and paired perfectly with the filling. Definitely would come back to try more.

Fun cafe with great food and good service. The place is large and airy with limited seating. Large parking lot in the back. Recommend oxtail hand pie, it was delicious. We also had the Seoul style breakfast plate with sausage which was excellent too. Generous amount of spam in the musubi. For ramen, you pick a package, choose three toppings and go to the cooking station to make your own ramen. For drinks the Misugaru latte and Omija sparkler were both very good. Sweet corn latte was just a small hint of corn and the cappuccino was on the watery side. Employees were friendly and helpful. Happy this place opened up and we will be back in the future.

I tried coming 15 minutes before opening on a Sunday during lunch time and that helped a lot! Would recommend coming during the day if you want to avoid waits. Some of our favorites: -Chicken Kalguksu: I get this every time! The broth is amazing, have never had such a rich, flavorful chicken broth before. You can taste all the herbs, seasonings, and time they took to prepare. The broth is a little on the thicker end, but super filling. -Seafood Kalguksu: the broth is so flavorful and it comes filled to the brim with all types of seafood! The spice actually pairs really well with the seafood too. If you want a spicy stew, this is it! Noodles are thick and chewy too. -Bossam: so yummy! I wish I could get it more often but it's a huge portion, so come with a group so you can try it and the noodles! Everything is quality- the bossam slices, the lettuce, the toppings on the wide. Chefs kiss! My only small gripe is the portions are so big that when I come with one other person, we only have the stomach capacity to eat two dishes! Always excited to come back and try more.

I think I've been coming here for a very, very long time--probably for about 20 years! I used to come here quite often back then. At some point, though, I stopped coming as much because the parking situation in this shopping center became so busy and chaotic that it was difficult to even get in from the entrance. Also, the last time I came here, maybe two years ago, the valet parking attendant was so rude that I didn't really feel like coming back. This time, since we were already in the area for the spa, we decided to stop by again. Back when I first started coming here, it was just a very small noodle restaurant. One thing they've kept all these years--and what I think is such a great touch--is that they still serve yeolmu kimchi and kkom-bori-bap (barley rice) as a complimentary side. The restaurant became incredibly popular over the years and eventually expanded into the neighboring space, so there are now many more tables than there used to be. Since it had been such a long time since my last visit, I noticed they had quite a few new menu items that weren't available before, including galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), samgyetang (Korean ginseng chicken soup), and galbi noodle soup. One of my brothers and I ordered the perilla oil makguksu each, and it was absolutely delicious! It had such a rich, nutty flavor from the perilla oil, and it was one of those dishes that makes you think about it again later. In the past, I would always order the clam kalguksu whenever I came here, but this time I decided to try something different. My other brother ordered the clam kalguksu, and my mom had the dolsot (Hot stone) bibimbap. I tried a spoonful of my mom's dolsot bibimbap because I really like bibimbap too, and it was delicious as well. In the past, the wait here used to be incredibly long. You had to write your name and phone number by hand at the entrance, and then a staff member would come outside and call your name when your table was ready. This time, the system was different. We were told to simply wait in line, and she would take our orders outside. She said the wait would only be about 5-10 minutes, and she was absolutely right. While we were waiting in line outside, she handed us menus, took our orders, and then seated us at our table. The food came out quickly, the service was very friendly, and everything we ordered was delicious. It turned out to be a very satisfying dinner. After coming back here again after such a long time, I completely understood why this place has been so popular for so many years. It was just as popular back then as it is now, and honestly, I can see why!

Only downside is that after mixing in the beef marrow with the tartare, it became congealed fat so not a great texture. But flavor was great. For the main we got the zabuton to share and opted for the 16oz. We probably should've gotten the 8oz cause this was a lot of food for the two of us. But it was so tender and I loved pairing it with the perilla side. The garlic rice was delicious too. I can definitely see the hype and would come back for the steak. So tender.

What an experience!! Hehhe…read more We got the Set. We also ordered the galbi short ribs. It was about $50 for the ribs alone!! At first glance, everything looked amazing. Down the line, I realized that the set was basically a bunch of ban chan. Some were interesting because other Korean restaurants don't serve it. We were advised to use it to create our own bibimbap. The perilla porridge stood out most. I never had perilla porridge. The taste was unique. It had chicken inside. The small cup of pumpkin soup was yummy. The soybean soup (fermented soy bean stew) had a very pungent smell. I wanted to enjoy it, but it wasn't for me. I couldn't stand the smell and not comfortable with the taste. Wish they gave an option to choose from different stews. The desserts were good. I also like their plum tea/juice. The galbi was well marinated. Not as tender as I was hoping for, but it was still delicious. With the price, I do feel like the set should include a dish of meats. Especially since the restaurant requires 2 people at $34 each for the set. If you go 3 people, prob more worth it. Overall, it was a fun experience. Service was great.

Service is quite slow, as a true mom and pop place. It's quite popular and we happened to get there just before the rush as there was a large group waiting when we left. I'm not sure why it takes quite so long for the boribap jungsik cold dishes since most of it is premade and just needs plating. For a long time all we got was fried kelp crackers, kinda greasy fried shrimp cracker (?) and scorched rice water that was very tough to eat. The sweet pumpkin porridge was better, but I'm not a fan of sweet porridge. The rest of the set was better, fortunately, but most of it was on par with banchan that is complimentary at other restaurants but of course more variety. The savory pancake was very crispy and stayed that way. That was probably my favorite from the set, along with the perilla seed and chicken soup. The texture was quite thick like gravy but I love congee and it had a similar feel but nuttier taste. I would love a bowl of this if I were sick. Since there were 3 of us, we thought a protein would be good so we ordered the pork ribs. They were pretty good. It reminded me of hamji park, although I prefer hamji. It ended up being more food than we could eat so we took some of the ribs home. I'm glad we ordered the set for 2 and then shared a different dish. Overall I'm glad I tried it since I've been curious. The meal was good but I probably would try another option next time.

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
