I decided to visit again after learning that the cafe is under new ownership. My last visits were about three years prior. Those visits were disappointing as the food seemed to be microwaved leftovers. I really wanted this time to be better. I love to support local establishments. Unfortunately this visit was mediocre at best. My order was the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, okra and a side salad. The salad came first. They are very generous with the portions and topped it with fresh onions, cheese and, tomatoes. Additionally there was a generous amount of ranch dressing in a bowl. Unfortunately, the lettuce appeared to be old. There was very little green and too much yellow. Additionally, there were several wilted pieces. I was able to cull out the worst and drown the salad in ranch making it passable. The main course came out as I was finishing my salad. Appearance was pleasant. The okra appeared to be from a package, about like you would expect from a fast food place. The mashed potatoes were creamy and smooth with just enough gravy to make a small topping. The chicken fried chicken seemed small, but was actually thicker than I expected. It was just about the perfect amount as a result. It was also topped with gravy. I noticed that the chicken seemed very bland. I was hoping for some seasoning to bring it to life. Generous amounts of salt did the trick, but seems like cheating. The staff seemed very attentive and friendly. However my waitress must have been fighting allergies. On several occasions she cleared her sinuses and her throat in such a manner that I was certain she would need to spit. This is the kind of thing only teenage boys do to impress their friends, and adults do very much away from others. It was very loud and happened both out of sight and in the dining area. This is a real problem. It made it difficult to eat. However, the value of the meal is a plus. An entree and three sides at a sit down restaurant for less than ten dollars is attactive. Perhaps this is a case of you get what you pay for. But I truly hope it is just growing pains for the new owners. read more

I, however, made the idiotic mistake of ordering a veggie burger from the worst cafe in Allen. I should've known by the look of this aged, shack of an establishment, that I was making a mistake but Zairia apparently likes to see her hope die. I was served a soggy, Great Value™ version of the veggie burger I had pictured in my mind's eye complete with onion rings I could have paid 2 dollars less for. Even better, my boyfriend's carnivorous beefy patty was a gilded treasure. Within one bite, the atrocity of what should have been a BLT, fell apart before our eyes. This is a CLASSIC, small town Texas diner! There people are friendly, the food is hot, and is served with a smile. The customers have their personal table they have sat at every Saturday for years. The music is Nashville 90's hits. Kids clap their hands when they get their pancakes. It's "Eagle Country." The food does not have anything culinarily special about it. Today we went to have breakfast at this restaurant. To be honest we should have walked out after not being attended to be seated in a timely manner. Others whom arrived after we did had drinks while our drink order had yet to be taken. I had to get up to ask about our drinks. Others whom arrived after we did were served food first. My omelette came out so cold the cheese wouldn't melt, was so greasy I complained to girl at register after the bacon tasted rancid. We paid in full. I am so disappointed. Was not what you would expect from a breakfast cafe. It tasted like HOTEL food! No flavor eggs watery like it's per-made and set aside on a warmer like a buffet. I have been to Mom's Cafe on three (3) occasions that I can recall and none of them really jumped out as anything about which to write home. While they have always left something to be desired in food quality, presentation, and wait staff, my most recent encounter today will likely ensure I do not return. I typically love "hole-in-the-wall" and "home cooked" type restaurant but this one just offers cheap food quality (looks like it is straight from a can). This morning, I decided to treat several of my employees to breakfast and was very disappointed on the following counts: - Do not allow any substitutions and when I inquired as to the cost to add pancakes, was asked "how many" and when I said two, quoted the price for 3 that was on the menu ($4.95). Why ask how many? Just offer that you can add 3 for $4.95. Did they think I wanted 12? - Undercooked eggs on two of my employee's meals - Brought a laughably small amount of gravy for two large biscuits (about 2oz) - Biscuits & Gravy were bland and had no flavor. They'd be better off just serving Grand's Biscuits or something - Didn't bring out everyone's food at once and once all the food was served, decided to have everyone wait for 10-15 minutes before providing cutlery. Everyone ordered a hot meal and by the time we had the utensils needed to taste our deeply sub-par meals, they were all cold. - When taking the check to the register to pay, after waiting a while for someone to show up to take my money, they asked if everything was okay and I (and several co-workers) made the comment that things were "horrible" in one of their words. Rather than expressing any bit of concern, she took the ticket (which she couldn't understand the writing on and neither could I) and proceeded to add it up and ask for my form of payment. Wow... not even an "I'm really sorry to hear that!" much less a "Let me see if I can get a manager...". Frankly, I'm amazed they have stayed in business this long with the complete lack of passion for what they do. This Cafe was a very good surprise. I dropped my car off across the street at Custom Car and Corbin recommended Mom's cafe just a click away. It was a very short walk and I found it. Francisco is the owner he waited on me after greeting me in a very friendly manner and everybody who came in enthusiastically; many by name. I was impressed by clean appearance and general ambience. They were playing country music. Hey, I'm not a big fan of country music but it seemed appropriate for a down-home American Cafe here in Texas. I wanted to put on my cowboy hat. They were about two-thirds full which means they were busy without being bombed out. I asked if I could have a kids meal since I have a very restricted diet and can't eat much. Francisco said "Sure". This was the first food I had after being in the hospital for 4 days having a colonoscopy and upper GI.I'm allergic to eggs and this is primarily a breakfast establishment. I ordered a Kid's Meal of hash browns, bacon and a biscuit and gravy. I had them leave off the egg that was supposed to go with it. The coffee was good and all of the food items were cooked properly. The only minor complaint I might have had is that the biscuit was a little doughy. I loved the gravy. The bacon was crisp and the hash browns were cooked properly and delicious.They use Heinz ketchup and real half-and-half for condiments. I like that. I have now been to the café 3 times since they have changed names. I have only gone for breakfast and/or brunch but I am happy to say that I have been VERY pleased with their new look and the quality of the food for the price/value! My first visit was the first week the new ownership took over the café and the service was frantic and disjointed but you could tell that most of the people were trying. My second time was after they had done some repainting and laying of tile and updating and what I would say just really cleaned up the place. The third time I was there I found it to be quite nice sitting in the back part of the restaurant where the cooling seemed to work better and the food, for the price... was very good! All in all I would say I have been very pleased with their new look and ownership. Service still needs a bit of fine tuning but it can be very hectic on weekends when I usually go. The best thing I have seen is the new bathroom remodel. SO MUCH NICER! I always felt that the bathrooms were dirty before and never wanted to go in there. read more

The menu said the breakfast el Mexicana had eggs with onion, bell peppers, tomatoes and jalapeños... Not one jalapeño to be found. I asked for jalapeños and it took 10 minutes because they roasted two fresh jalapeños instead of just chopping and bringing it or cooking them in the eggs like the menu said. By the time they got there, my breakfast was cold. Not to mention the salsa has an oil base, like a dressing. Gross. And it's not spicy at all.
