I believe this is the place that had the catfish my mom used to rave about. Remembering that, we stopped by one Saturday night after the kids sports activities. This was a sleepy cafe style restaurant. There were very few people there. Our food was very average. The guy sitting at the corner (who had finished eating before we arrived) stared at our group the entire time. To accurately assess this place, I probably need to go for breakfast. Mom's Cafe has the LOWEST health inspection score in the City Of Allen!! That was in April of 2016. They got a 60! Only 4 establishments were in the 60s. Only reason we gave it second chance was we were out of time and the other places nearby were closed. Went in for brunch. Place is warm, just like last time. The only person that had food worth eating was me, I ordered pancakes and a side of fruit. The fruit was canned fruit. Seriously...I've never been served canned fruit at a restaurant. Other orders (best I can remember): Crab/Salmon cakes: these were obviously pre-made processed frozen patties. Not edible. Over cooked Spaghetti: father in-law didn't eat much of this either, and he isn't that picky. Said it wasn't really warm and the noodles were mushy, sauce had little flavor, tasked like Ragu out of a jar. Chicken fried steak: this wasn't steak, this was formed ground beef patties that were breaded and deep fried. Gravy wasn't real gravy or it was out of a jar or just old. I can't remember all the other orders but I do know this...nobody there knows how to actually cook food. Anything that can be fresh is never fresh, usually canned. Nothing was worth paying money for and nobody ate more than half their food. I think the wait staff is used to seeing this because there wasn't a question or comment from them. If I ever go there again, it will be to seek shelter and I will bring my own food or order a pizza to be delivered. read more

Mom's is now under new ownership & management. We enjoyed the breakfast and friendly service. If the owner is there ask for the Mexican Coffee. His special recipe (the regular coffee was a little weak). Also the server recommended an off menu "cabbage hash" which was excellent. Slightly weird (for breakfast) but very good. I went to Mom's with my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother for a late lunch on 5/30/215 around 2:30 PM. When we first walked in there were only two small groups in the restaurant. Yet for some reason, we waited 8 minutes to be seated. Once seated we waited another 5 minutes to get menus, and they only arrived after I told my great-grandmother I'd get up and find them for her myself. The salad was fine and the sweat tea was acceptable. Our food was another story all together. My mother ordered the fried catfish. It looked like no fried catfish I'd ever seen before. Very floppy and soggy. She only took two bites before she became nauseous and almost excused herself to be sick. I only took a sniff but could tell it smelled rancid. I sat the fish on another table so it wouldn't impede the rest of our experience. When the "gentleman" serving us came back he gave us a questioning look when he picked up the fish. My mother said "I can't eat that, it's disgusting", I commented "it smells awful". He didn't comment, there was no "let's get you another one" or "what else can we get you" like you would expect in a respectable place. My great-grandmother's spinach tasted like it'd been cooked in dirty dishwater and my baked potato was definitely underdone. We were definitely not pleased. My mother excused herself outside because she was still nauseated by the fish and I waited at the front to pay with my great grandmother. Imagine my surprise when he charged her for the rancid fish. I said "you're really charging her for bad fish? Fish that made my mother ill? She's going to throw up today because of your food and you're still making my Mammaw pay for it? You took it, you saw only two small bites were missing, are you serious?" I was in disbelief! He proceeded to tell me that no one else has EVER complained and tried to blame my mother for getting sick! You're going to blame the customer because you served rancid fish? Needless to say the customer service left a LOT to be desired and the food was nowhere near worth it. I recommend ANY other place you can find over this one! read more

Have eaten at this place several times through the years. It's consistently ok. Never bad, never outstanding, but just okay. Yesterday it was breakfast. Husband had the chicken fried steak (pretty sure it's the frozen Cisco one), gravy (pretty sure it's the restaurant mix kind), eggs over easy (a little too easy, needed to cook a tad longer), hasbrowns were fine. I had the two chicken fajita tacos and salsa, they were good but nothing spicy or special really, and the country potatoes were good. Iced tea is always fresh and good. Service is a little slow, I think it may be a little too busy for the number of servers they have. This has been our experience here every time. The food is okay, but not something we "crave" or someplace we'll go very often. If you like things a little more on the predictable and bland side, it might be the perfect place for you. read more

The potatoes were like little rocks, the pancake was dry, the eggs were tasteless and the bacon was nasty. My mother ordered a breakfast that was supposed to be a skillet-like scramble with hamburger. The 'hamburger meat' was rock hard and the dish was disgusting. My brother and I came here out of curiosity. I generally tend to find that restaurants with poor curb appeal and worse interior decor tend to be real gems. This would, sadly, be more indicative of 'ethnic' restaurants. Mom's Cafe would fit the bill if there existed an ethnicity that was focused on bland breakfast food you could easily- and more cheaply- make at home. There's nothing special about this place. I can see how locals might hold a special place in their hearts for this joint as somewhere they went with Meemaw and Peepaw when they were seven, but you can't kid yourself that this place is doing anything remarkable. Mom's Cafe is about as thrilling or interesting as watching a KERA pledge drive. read more

My wife and I tried Mom's Cafe for the first time today for breakfast and were totally satisfied. The service was excellent and the food arrived fast, hot and prepared exactly as ordered. The owners were both very polite, hardworking people. My wife tried the cabbage hash browns and was very pleased with the taste. I just order a tuna on toast sandwich with potato chips from your location. Almost no tuna on it. Literally a smear. I requested no tomatoes. You put tomatoes on them. Once the tomatoes were scraped off it was a mayonnaise and lettuce sandwich with under cooked potato chips that I paid 10.56 for. I also got a small wedge of coconut pie. It was still frozen. The fact that we could easily get a table for 5 at 10am on a Sunday should have been a big clue that this place was not going to be good. This place has it all, bad service AND bad food. Our waitress brought me a dirty water glass, when I pointed this out she promptly took it away - but never replaced it. We had to ask for silverware and ask for coffee twice. It was a BIG DEAL to sub biscuits and gravy for 1 pancake. When I finally got my food after 30 minutes in a half-empty restaurant, my omelette was beyond undercooked and was just plain runny. I understand some people like their eggs soft, but liquid in the middle is just plain gross. It took another 15 minutes to get a new omelette, which was also undercooked. The hash browns were greasy and pale and the bacon was sliced so thin you could see through it and they weren't even crispy. My in-laws asked for a to-go box for their biscuits and were given a box with a BUG in it. That is disgusting. Bottom Line: DO NOT COME HERE. There are way better places: Allen Cafe ,IHOP, Cracker Barrel, this place was GROSS. read more

I really wanted this place to be a good breakfast spot. I've been here a few times and it's just always very unimpressive. The service is always slow and inattentive and the food is never really all that good. Breakfast is definitely better than their lunch. I had lunch there once and the food reminded me of old reheated food that you would get in school cafeterias. The only reason I have returned is because it's so close to the house. Today was the last time I pay to have my breakfast screwed up, there are plenty of other breakfast spots that are only a few extra miles away that are leaps and bounds better than this place.
