Quite a few vagrants (I don't know the PC term for this) back and forth but they did not appear to approach any diners (we were inside). Food was authentic Mexican, as were seemingky most of the staff. We wnjoyed being taken care of by delightful younf lady from Monterrey by way of Dallas. Chips and salsa were fresh. The Boss had her standard Quesadilla and I had a version of enchilada pollo w and deep delicous molè. Prices were reasonable. I don't anticipate being back in SLC, but if I do will def come backl. My friend and I shared the birria tacos and shrimp ceviche, which were both tasty and filling. If you like tangy/less sweet drinks the Passion Por Oaxaca is for you. My partner and I stopped in at Monarca for drinks and guacamole on a walk downtown. The staff was kind and seated us immediately. They had three equally enticing margarita flavors on the menu: passion fruit, guava, and prickly pear. I ordered the passion fruit, but ended up receiving the guava. I had a hunch when I saw the color, and knew immediately after taking the first sip that I was right: it was guava. However, I can honestly say that I've never been so pleased by having my drink order made wrong. The guava was so refreshing and delightful, I happily drank every last drop of it. I will definitely be going back to try the passion fruit (followed by another guava). The guacamole was beautifully plated and perfectly paired with fresh and crispy house-made tortilla chips. The chips to guacamole/salsa ratio was perfect for us and we ran out of everything at the same time which almost never happens! The location is ideal, and we enjoyed sitting on the patio (although it was a bit small which is to be expected downtown). We had an overall enjoyable experience, but I will say that it lacked in design and aesthetic. The indoor area felt a little strange between the black walls with gold accents, the white chandelier with craft store butterflies glued to it, and empty liquor bottles with plant starters as center pieces. The branding lacked a cohesive vibe that I and many other diners seek out when choosing the right place to eat. I'd come here again with a couple friends for a drink and appetizer before going to a show downtown, but probably wouldn't choose this spot for special occasions or larger parties where a lot of photos might be taken. read more

After the Gentri concert at "The Eccles", I yelped Monarca and we (6 of us) headed over. Great atmosphere, Charlie was so personable and took our orders. Chips and salsa to start were so great. Guacamole was fresh and flavorful. I ordered the Pollo en Mole and the mole was so delicious and rich. Unfortunately the chicken was a bit dry. My BIL had the Steak Quesadilla and loved it. My daughter loved the fish tacos and my wife found the Burria Tacos to be meaty and full of flavor. My SIL thinks her Enchiladas Suisas were the best she has had. Super salty one note wonder, we got their " signature dish" which was nothing more than a taco shell with some meat and cheese did I mention salty AF! I had the burrito chignon I guess if I wanted a fajita it would have been okay but that's all it tastes like and where's my spice like jalapeños maybe? Oh and the kicker to this experience was even though we had to ask for chips for our ceviche and it's supposed to come with it and service was crap in general, when we go to check out the waiter auto charged us a25% tip!!! This was a really awful dining experience. We ordered queso and we were charged an extra $4 for chips. The fact that you don't get chips with $7 queso is insane. I was charged for a drink I didn't order and the beer that my boyfriend ordered was never brought. The food was fine but nothing special. When I asked about the beer the waitress, Becca, never brought it. Unfortunately had a very bad experience dining here. Went for a anniversary based off of some recommendations and some fun Instagram posts. The bad experience started from the very beginning. Made a reservation for 7for inside and told we wouldn't be able to be seated till 7:45 or sit outside. Decided to just sit outside and then it proceeded to rain and the management didn't seem to care that we were the only table with no umbrella we requested to be moved inside since that was what we originally made the reservation for. Management seemed very annoyed by this request but did seat us inside at that point. Once seated we were very excited to try the molcajete, which was just mediocre at best. The best part of it was the table side liquid nitrogen pina colada (one of the main reasons we went) it was delicious, but one good cocktail does make up for bad service and mediocre food. To top it off after we left the restaurant I planned on making a review through opentable, only to see that my reservation had been canceled since I never showed up. Management clearly canceled the reservation knowing I would not be able to leave a review. I would not recommend this restaurant, their are plenty of great Latin American restaurant in the valley that will have better food and service for cheaper prices. read more

Our server seemed preoccupied near the end of the meal with making drinks (he appeared to be serving and the bar tender as well during this lunch time), so getting help to ask for the bill was a bit slow, but that likely was a staffing issue rather than with him or the overall place. Mediocre & not worth the prices. Get some cheaper & better tasting Mexican food somewhere else

The absolute service experience I have ever had. It began from the moment we stepped in the door. The hostess made it seem like we were inconiviencing her by checking in for our reservation. We ended up showing being 15 minutes early and were told that, even though we had a reservation, we would be waiting at the minimum 45 minutes to be seated or we could be seated outside in 15 minutes. We decided to do the outdoor option because we did not have much time. After being seated 15 minutes later we didnt receive water or greeting from a waiter for at least another 10 miuntes, and then it began to rain, and of course we are the only table outside with no umbrella. We then requested to sit inside and after speaking to their manager, who seemed very mad and upset that we were requesting to be seated outside after it raining, were then escorted in to a table. From there the service seemed to be going okay, but then we recieved our food, and wow... it did not make up for the poor service at all. In fact i would say it made the experience worse. We ordered the molcajete and the birria tacos, for refrence. The food was tasteless and bland, we were very very excited to dine here and have heard such winderful things, but we will never comeback or even attempt to retry, not worth it. And to top it off, after leaving the restaurant I received an email from OpenTable saying I canceled my reservation/never showed up, so I was unable to leave a review via OpenTable.
