We live in the area. I've been craving for a donut and hubs was kind enough to oblige. Met Jonathan this morning. As I walk up to the window, I was greeted with "Good morning sunshine!" How could your day not get any better after that? Not our first time there, but definitely the first time we've seen him. Bought our buttermilk donuts and an apple fritter (you can't leave without getting one!) After I paid, Jonathan said that he also put a crumb donut in the bag. He said to "eat it like you would eat a burger." We took our donuts and headed to get some coffee somewhere else. Yes, we took our donuts down with us. The fritter did not disappoint. Then I tackled the crumb donut. I have never tasted a more fresh and delicious donut! It literally melted in my mouth! The hubs felt the same way. Talk about an out of body experience! I usually find a great selection of doughnuts, but I am there before 7 a.m. It is a small place that has been there for many years. Came by after Sunday Mass to finally try out the apple fritter I had read so much about. Jonathan apologized for not having any left and promising to have some for me if I pre-order the next time. He suggested I try the bear claw (closest to the fritter he said) and his unique crumb donut (crumbs made fresh daily by him). I left with without checking my paper bag and when I realized there was only the bearclaw, I drove back. My niece who was with me was worried that we would have problems claiming the missing item but Jonathan had the donut bagged and handing it to me as soon as I walked up the window. He told me he was heartbroken when he realized it wasn't in the bag he handed me... I appreciate the positive and sweet spirit of Jonathan. I am glad I met him. Better yet, his donuts are great! I've only purchased donuts like twice in my entire life so when my friend/coworker's birthday rolled around and donuts are her fave, I had to figure out where to go other than Winchell's. I always see people at Monarch Donuts so I decided to give it a try. When I arrived around 7:45am, there was already a small line of 2 people in front of me and there weren't many donuts left in the display. The guest in front of me was chatting it up with the owner so it was nice to see that he had good relationships with his regulars. Once it was my turn, Jonathan introduced himself and he was super friendly and immediately struck up a conversation. I ordered 2 dozen donuts and told him I wanted all of his sprinkled ones as those are my friends favorite. The total came out to about $24. I was excited to try the sprinkled donuts and to my surprise, I wasn't disappointed at all. It was one of the best donuts I've ever had! I'll definitely be back! My sister recommended this place to me. The owner of the shop is really sweet. He took my order and made my doughnuts fresh on the spot. it took about 15 minutes or so and it was worth it. I finally managed to get to Monarch when it was open. I ordered my usual: two sugar twists. Surprise #1: only $1.40 instead of the $1.50 everyone else charges. Surprise #2 (B*I*G Surprise): their donuts are much larger than at my favorite shop (which is already larger than the most nearby shop). How much bigger? I uploaded a photo of two sugar twists from Monarch together with two from another store. I weighed them: unnamed store: 80.6 grams and 87.6 grams. Monarch. (fasten your seat belt): 135.6 grams and 139.3 grams. Now to be fair, weight is not the whole story, because sometimes lightness in a donut is a desirable quality, especially in a yeast-risen donut. These were more on the substantial than light and fluffy side, but they were tasty, definitely a good deal, and were forthwith consumed with suitable gluttony on my part. read more

Yes, my review is a little biased based on the awesome customer service I received here a few days ago. The donuts are really good, but the customer service we received is what made this a 5 star place for me. I have gotten to the point where barely decent customer service is infrequent, so when really good customer service comes along I never forget it. The hubby and I were craving some maple bars and we'd decided to pick this place over others that are much closer to our house since it came highly recommend by a family member. We picked out a dozen (maple bars, chocolate bars, jelly filled, and custard filled). I also grabbed a couple of drinks and placed them on the counter. The lady ringing us up was very nice and let us know the total which came to a little over $13. I thought I had at least $15, but came up $2 short (only had $11). I apologized and told her to remove the drinks from the order and she said "no, no, it's okay. Next time" with a sincere and kind smile on her face. She was kind and friendly from the moment we walked into the shop. This will always stand out for me, since I'm accustomed to bad or at least mediocre customer service. The donuts themselves were really soft and still warm (even though it was already late afternoon). The maple and chocolate bars were nicely coated, soft, and chewy. The custard filled has to be the best damn custard filled donut I have ever tasted. The custard was creamy and sweet and the donut itself was incredibly soft . The jelly filled was good too, but the filling was a little too sweet. Overall my experience here was such that I will choose this place over several others that are much closer to my home, it's totally worth it. read more

I have been stopping by Monarch Donuts for several years ever since finding it while staying in Arcadia & Monrovia on business. I love this place and the owner Jonathon. He really puts his soul into making these donuts, fritters, twists, and jelly donuts every day. I like that he opens really early. I came to try Monarch this morning and realized once I got there that only cash was accepted. I walked back to my car disappointed because I only had my debit card. To my surprise Jonathan called me over and so generously gave me a dozen donuts and three apple fritters at NO CHARGE!! Not only did he completely make my morning, by sharing his story and being so kind to me, he also left a huge impression on me. The kindness that he showed me, a complete stranger, and first time customer I have never experienced! It's truly given me a new perspective on how I was to treat others and how I can be generous in my own life. Not to mention these donuts are absolutely incredible! Best donut place in Southern California. Owner Jonathan is the sweetest person to ever walk this planet. I came here one morning and walked up to the window and saw it said "cash only" I began walking back to my car when he yelled for me to come back. I told him I only had a card and he didn't care. (I went back and paid him the next morning my $2) But I've seen him do it to people all the time. Wether they are buying a small coffee and 1 donut or a dozen. He never turns anyone away. He even gave coffee and a donut to a homeless person one time who walked by. He makes every person who he interacts with feel like he's known them for years and makes them feel so special. read more

Yummy donuts! The owner knows us here because we always get an order daily for our clients. The donuts here are moist and fluffy unlike some other places that have their donuts sitting out all day and don't taste as fresh. I usually get the ham and cheese croissant ($2.50) which is really good. Street parking can be a hassle but there's more parking in the back if you pull into their driveway off of Huntington.They close at 12pm so get there before 9 if you want a ham n cheese-they go FAST ;) read more

The guy helping me out was super nice and friendly and his story and tribute to his mother and grandmother is very touching but I just couldn't enjoy the cold fritter I received. I stumbled across this place through my yelp search for the best fritter and this place for such good reviews that I was excited. I actually already picked up one earlier in the morning from a different donut shop and it was awful. Just greasy and disgusting so I tossed it and was in search of another fritter. I ended up tossing this one too. He got it from the back and it was around 7 am so I wonder if it was refrigerated as it was cold and kind of bland. Anyways it may have just been a fluke for me as there are a lot of good reviews. Maybe I'll make it over there again to give it another chance. read more

Be sure to be there there early or else they sell out of their more popular flavors. The glazed and the crumb doughnuts are my favorite. The texture is soft and fluffy, the perfect doughnuts. Holy cow, I don't know if I can top William E.s detailed, almost scientific review of Monarch Donut's donuts. I don't have measurements and weights to the milligram, but here's my take: 1. My coworkers know donuts. They are the Homer Simpsons of donuts, if that could be considered a compliment, and one day I brought a dozen of these donuts in on a whim, since it's on my way to work. Later everyone was asking me, "Where did you get those donuts? They're so...big! And fluffy! And chewy!" I take this to be high praise from people who have trained their palates on many a bear claw over the years and now people even give me money to buy Monarch donuts for them. 2. I could've sworn this place was a Cambodian money laundering operation for the longest time. Whenever I drove by this place, it was closed! Now I've learned that the owner/proprieter makes the donuts fresh every day and when they sell out, they close shop. This is good because even though I don't know much about donuts, I know that the fresher they are, the better they are. And since they open at 4AM, this happens usually by 11PM. So get there early! 3. Finally, diets and health conciousness and all that crap aside, donuts just make people happy. This is not really relevant to the review, but it's relevant to life. A dozen donuts at Monarch's is around $9.00 - a bit pricier than most places but worth it - and it's definitely worth it if you can buy off that crabby coworker of yours for at least one work day. read more

When we stopped by this little shop, Jonathan pulled us in with his amazingly positive attitude. He began telling us about the story behind his apple fritters; he told us how it is made with his deep sense of gratitude and love for mothers all around the world. On my way from the valley to Arcadia, I called monarch to see if they had any apple fritters left. Since it was 11am on s Sunday, I wasn't holding my breath. Of course they had sold out of the fritters already. I did however ask if they had any glazed twists and the owner asked me how many I would like. I told him that I wanted 4 of them and he had exactly that amount and put it aside for me to pick up. When I arrived, he was very funny and sweet!
