Then I got my spicy Ahi poke which was my all time favorite and no salt or spicy taste. Even the spicy tuna poke was bland. I've never been this disappointed ever from Monarchs. Ate here 10+ times now, raved about it, unfortunately that was before this past week's experience. Food wasn't as good as it was..or it could have been an off day. Their Nori Wrapped Crab Stuffed Ahi plate is AWESOME (which I get 90% of the time), so is their Hamburger Steak.. but sadly this past time my taste experience wasn't barely even okay..got the Grilled Chicken Nalo Salad $7.95: the chicken was far from fresh, overcooked and not even flavored great. The salad wasn't at all special, just blah. I'll upload the pic. Also, got had some Limu Poke, and the Spicy Ahi Poke, both were barely even okay. I couldn't even finish off the few pieces I had left, I was fine with dumping it in the trash :( Sadly I think it will be a while before I come back, or if anything I'll stick to what I know would be good, the nori/crab/ahi, or the hamburger steak. And yes, parking is horrible, bring a passenger to pay/pickup while you wait outside. I've even parked in that big driveway area but always try to make it quick. I also wanted to try there banana cream pie but they sold out when we went. The crab stuff ahi is amazing. It's ahi around crab in the middle held by nori and topped with wasabi sauce. The bento had crab cake, mochiko chicken, and fried poke. Which must have been good since my partner ate it all even though he was full half way through. If you haven't gone here yet it's a must try. I've never heard of this place until my co-worker suggested I try their nori crab stuffed ahi. Sooooo good! Their fish is also fresh and soooo good. Went on my lunch break so it was so buzy, jam packed, out the door. Call early morning to put your order in cuz after a certain time they will not answer the phone. We tried faxing order, not reliable. Everything is Ono! This is a no frills place, no tables or chair. Go in and be ready to order or better call it in. The cashier looks kinda frazzled and stressed cuz they are buzy. You will not be greeted with a smile cuz like I said they buzy. It's ok though cuz it's worth the wait for me. It looks just like the pictures and I thought that it was cooked perfectly (it wasn't dry or overly greasy). It's topped with this wasabi dressing and it's just perfect. Other things: the poke has always been a hit but the best thing ever is their banana cream pie. I was rather skeptical at first (pie at a fish place? IDK guys), until the lady in front of me bought 4 slices. I quickly scooped up one of the last slices--my coworker and I split it and we both agreed that we wanted our own, next time. Not too sweet, perfect crust, just the right amount of creaminess. PARKING: I'd subtract a star, just based on logistics, but the food is so delicious that it makes it worth it. First time here and I went with a poke salad. It was really early in the morning when I went, they were just setting up when I was walking in. Really great customer service. They greeted me and even if they were busy still tryna open up they helped me. I got the spicy ahi with my salad. I asked the guy what kind of dressing they had and he told me they actually have a special dressing they make. I was a little nervous because I m picky with my dressing. But as soon as I had a taste it was bomb. Deciduous dressing, the poke was good and I m really happy about the portions too. In Waikiki you would usually find like a poke salad they cost 10 dollars that's half the size of what Monarch Seafood sells. My poke salad was 12 dollars, worth it for sure. I can't wait to go back and try some of their rolls. Really hoping they make some Haupia pies again too, the cashier told me they use to make all different types of Haupia pies but now they only have banana cream pies. Terrible customer service. I needed to place a catering order for a company luncheon so I called at least a month in advance to make sure they could do it. The lady who answered the phone took down my info and all the details, said they were able to do it and told me to call her a week prior to give a final headcount. She was rude to begin with. We wanted the hawaiian plate lunch but she kept pushing me to order the bentos, but I said no since our luncheon theme was hawaiian. I gave her an estimate of 40 orders. Come a week before the event, I called to give my final total which was 45 plate lunches. The same lady answered and I told her the details again. She just said very coldly, "Ohh no we can't do that. We can't do that." I was in shock because I had already collected money from everyone and I was counting on Monarchs since that same lady said she could do the order. She just kept repeating that they couldn't do it and didn't offer any solution. I was not happy. Real good BUT you have to call early and pre order. These guys are real good. The crab stuffed ahi is all that. If you try anything, get that. It's different and the flavor is a nice mix of gentle ahi and robust crab. Real nice combo with just the right amount of salt. The pasta with shrimp is very good too. Lots of shrimp. Great balance of pasta, veggies and butter sauce. Spicy garlic chicken is standard fare and the Ahi belly is good but remember to grab salt or shoyu. Needs a little more seasoning for my taste. They are nice and the food is ready and hot when you say you will pick up. They can really time their meals well. It's not just sitting there getting cold. That's real important. First of all this place is located right in the middle of ghetto Kalihi across from Bank of Hawaii.You can only take out food here and cannot eat in. The crab stuffed ahi is my choice plate. If you love crab and ahi then you are good to go. The parking is horrible. It can get really congested outside because of people who drop off people to get food. If you don't mind getting stressed out while trying to find parking and dodging all the people in their cars waiting then drive here. Came here for some plate lunch action today! After driving around for about an hour my gf and I decided to settle for plate lunch . By this time we were super hungry. After all these years of living in kalihi this was my 2nd visit. The place is take out only and parking is limited . Basically right in front of the store, if there isn't any I've seen people park at the bank parking lot right across the street, I guess it's ok but sometimes get security guarding the lot. Onto the food. In all honestly everybody only comes here for the Crab Stuffed Ahi roll. However it lives up to the hype. Its basically ahi stuff with crab wrapped in nori then battered then deep fried. It's pretty tasty especially with the wasabi aioli thing they put in there. The plate lunch also come with scoop rice and mix salad. Their house dressing is hella good also! Oh and I forgot to mention you could also order the stuff roll ala carte. My gf also ordered their Crab Cakes and that was also delicious. The sweet spicy aioli they put it in goes really well with the cakes. I will probably be back soon. read more

I've only been to Monarch Seafoods once and I got a take-out order. Parking in Kalihi can be tough to find, but I was fortunate to get street parking. Once I was inside Monarch Seafoods though, I was told the company has a few stalls available for their customers in the adjacent garage. Good to know ... because I definitely want to return someday. Most of the photos on the Monarch Seafoods page are of the nori-wrapped crabmeat stuffed ahi, and since I love crab and ahi, I decided to go with this option for lunch. But, there are lots of other delicious items on their menu that I cannot wait to try in the future. I went to Monarch Seafoods soon after they opened on a weekday, so I didn't have to wait too long for my order to be ready. I would definitely return, since my plate lunch was yummy and I felt I got what I paid for. Here's what I would recommend: "Nori-Wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi": I've seen the most pictures of this dish on Monarch's Yelp page, and the lady at the counter wasted no time telling me that this is the take-out spot's best seller. It features six small pieces of ahi--and yes, it's stuffed to the brim with crab meat--and wrapped with nori, almost like a sushi roll. All plate lunches include your choice of Nalo green salad, tossed salad or potato mac salad; I went for the potato mac. I savored every piece of that stuffed ahi; I loved the fresh crab meat and I also appreciated the fact that it didn't taste too strongly of mayo (I can't stand mayonnaise). I also really liked the potato mac salad for that reason - it was creamy and I loved the hearty potato chunks, but the mayo flavor wasn't overwhelming. To me, six pieces wasn't enough, though ... I would gladly order this again. Oh, and the ahi tasted fresh as well ... minor detail. "Ahi Katsu with Creamy Wasabi Sauce": This was the other item that I contemplated ordering during my visit. I absolutely love chicken katsu, so I'm sure the ahi katsu would be right up my alley as well. I do love a slight kick, so I look forward to trying the wasabi sauce. The ahi in my stuffed ahi plate was good, so I'm sure I would enjoy this plate as well. "Furikake Salmon": I love salmon, so I'm interested to try this furikake salmon entrée one day. Every place makes theirs a little differently, but I do love the freshness of salmon and that crunchy, furikake topping. "Monarch's Deep Fried Poke": Deep fried poke ... say what!? This was a side dish, but one that I cannot wait to try. I guess I don't come across deep fried poke that option, so that made this side appealing. Side note: I think the lady at the counter mentioned the sides are only $1 less than the plate lunches ... so it's more logical just to order a plate lunch than one of the sides, unless you're just torn between the two (as I often am) and want both. "Crabcakes": I love crabcakes, especially ones made with juicy, fresh, chunks of crabmeat. I definitely wouldn't mind trying the ones from Monarch someday. "Monarch Bento: Crabcake, Mochiko Chicken and Fried Poke (no salad)": This was another of the plate lunches that I really wanted to try because it contains a good sampling of sorts. I would get to try the crabcake and I do like mochiko chicken, so I want to see what Monarch's tastes like. So if you didn't know about this place, you probably would have driven right past it and didn't think twice. It's located in kalihi in an industrial area where there is absolutely no parking in sight but I've noticed most people will illegally park at the bank or if you're lucky you'll find street parking. They are most known for their crab stuffed ahi which is a crab roll deep fried with some kind of magical batter. It comes with a side or rice and a tossed salad with the best dressing you'll ever taste. If you're wise you will use your dressing for both the salad and the crab stuffed ahi so ask for extra. I've also tried their ahi katsu which was okay, their hawaiian plate which came with lau lau Kalua pig and some sides which was hearty and their pickle mango which wasn't my favorite. But either way their poke that is always available is always fresh and delicious. Be sure to call in your order in advance because there really is nowhere to really wait or sit. read more

We ordered it as an office and there was an older lady there that told us over the phone that they didn't offer potato mac salad?! I was surprised when I walked in because it was so busy on a Friday morning. It's a small takeout place. People were on the side waiting for their orders and I stood in line. There were stacks of takeout plates piled up and their phone kept on ringing. So I thought, this place must be really good! After seeing the pictures on yelp, I ordered the nori wrapped crab stuffed ahi. Just seconds after I paid, my order was ready. The guy just handed me one of the plates that had been stacked. Reading the recent review about Monarch Seafood was like hearing the Oama are running on the South Shore, for me. I just dropped everything I was doing, changed from shorts to pants, got in my car and headed for this store. I was so excited, I almost forgot to zip up my fly. I parked on the side of the Checkers (Shhhhh!) and ran across the street to Monarch. I was excited because this is what I have been looking for, for a long time. A contemporary hole-in-the-wall that I have never tried before. Took a quick look around to confirm is was a hole-in-the-wall and sure enough, it met all of my criteria. Smiling elderly lady behind the counter, small eatery with a distinct personality. I didn't dilly dally around and went with the Yelper's recommendations and ordered the Nori Wrapped Crabmeat Stuffed Ahi. I grabbed the menu on the side, scrolled down and then yelled, "Wait! Wait! I change my mind. Let me have the Garlic Butter Sauteed Tiger Prawns with Zucchini and Mushroom over Linguine instead." When I saw that on the menu, it made my mouth water and my stomach squirm. Then I changed my mind again and paused. I'm now thinking Kukui Nut Crusted Ahi Belly. I was confused because everything sounded good. I could tell I was irritating the counter lady. She gave me the stink eye and asked for my name. I asked "Why?" and she said she was going to give me a "one star" rating on Yelp! I couldn't blame her. I apologized and begged for forgiveness and ended up ordering the Stuffed Ahi. As I drove home, the smell in my car was driving me crazy hungry. You know the feeling. I love their food! When I found out my office was going to be a block away, I was so excited. Now I eat there 1-2 time a week.

I am a one-dish woman. (So apologies ahead of time if you are looking for guidance on any other dish.) But seriously, for as long as I can remember, the crab stuffed ahi has been a staple local plate lunch in my diet. I don't have it all the time, but when I do, I have all the same thoughts: 1) why do I not eat this more often 2) oh my gosh, I love the salad dressing on the nalo greens and 3) crab stuffed ahi, i love you! it's a pretty simple love story. But things get complicated and here's how: 1) parking is yucky. But when you want something so bad and look forward to it getting in your belly, you will park ANYWHERE. 2) it gets crowded, very crowded - note: CALL IN YOUR ORDER - this is key when you decide to literally park anywhere that you can run in, pay, and jam back to your car that you parked in the middle of the street blocking other cars (I am not speaking from experience, but I've seen it happen *wink*) and 3) you will be tempted to buy other things, but stick to the plan. Seriously, the poke looks melt-in-your-mouth, the pies look so delectable, other orders will be called out that will tempt you and then you will think, "Ok, next time, I'm going to try that." But in my case, that never happens. I can pretty much guarantee the crab stuffed ahi is the way to go. I'm sure practically anything else there is 5-star worthy too, but seriously, how would I know?! I have had the nori rolled stuffed ahi with crab in the past. No review is needed the title alone sells this dish and its as good as it sounds. This time, I ordered the Crab Cakes on Nalo Greens, wife ordered the Mochiko Chicken. We also ordered a fish musubi and a tiny cup of spicy ahi poke. What can enhance a plate lunch experience more? Eat it in the grass under a coconut tree in front of the restaurant. Did I mention this place is take out only? Whatever energy saved from wiping tables and filling waters is put into the food. The poke here is fresh. That's because the ocean is just a block away. I think the fish just come to the restaurant in the morning a check themselves in without the fisherman. The crab cakes were decadent. They give you two sauces and I am not sure which one was for the salad and which one was for the crab cakes. So I used them both :) What ever sins you pay for by eating the crab cakes, you are repented when you get to the fresh Nalo greens. Wife's mochiko chicken was good. It had a gravy sauce with large mushrooms. We both dug into the fish musubi which is about 2x larger than a spam one at 7 eleven. The fish is a fishcake similarly prepared like the crab cakes. I found this place on Yelp! because I was in need of party platters on short notice, and the reviews were good. I called on a Friday during lunch, and while it took a few tries before someone answered the phone, the woman who helped me knew her stuff. She told me that a half plate would feed 20 people, so I told her I wanted a half plate of rice, kalua pig, and firecracker chicken. She advised me to go with mochiko chicken because firecracker is really spicy and not everyone can eat it. When I asked about poke, she told me they sold it by the pound, and when I asked how much she recommended for 40 people, she said 5 pounds. I didn't know anything about feeding that many people, so I went with it. Like previous reviewers have said, parking is a bit of an issue, but they had someone help me get all the platters to my car. The platters were also ready and waiting for me when I got there, so all I had to do was review the order and pay. I got everything exactly as I asked, and the ahi shoyu poke came with the sauce, onions, and green onions on the side. They were adamant that I don't mix the sauce into the poke until right before everybody eats. The group I brought this in for loved it! 40 different compliments! Everybody's favorite part was the poke, because without sitting in sauce forever, you could tell that the fish was super-fresh. I actually forgot to mix the sauce in right before serving, but everybody liked that they could put as much or as little on as they wanted. The mochiko chicken was delicious and the kalua pig was outta this world! And the best part was that it was exactly the right amount of food. Everybody got a big plate of food, and there were barely any leftovers at all. It was that good! You really can't beat the price, too. Especially considering the 5 pounds of poke, the whole thing, including tax, came in right at $200, which was our budget. Fresh, Ono and priced right for sashimi grade poke and grade A sashimi. Order your platters in advance for special occasions. Check out the regular lunch menu till 2 pm. The Crab stuffed ahi wrapped with nori is delicious as well as the garlic roast pork. The nalo greens with his lemon miso dressing is delicous. Don't forget a 1/4 pound of poke and his mom's famous banana cream pie, made fresh daily. Looking for a menu to cater an event. However it is takeout only as there is no seating and the parking is challenging because you have to find street parking around the area. When I arrived it was pretty busy and there was a large amount of phone orders waiting to be picked up. But service was very fast considering how busy it was. There are a large selection of plate lunches, daily specials, and poke. I went with the Nori wrapped crabmeat stuffed ahi with nalo green salad and rice. This menu item is their most popular item and for good reason. It looks like a sushi roll stuffed with ahi and crab meat it had the perfect balance of creaminess balanced with a wasabi sauce drizzle definitely a must try if you come. I also tried the ahi lime poke and it was very fresh, this place is a solid choice for some good local style food. This place is the real deal, old school fresh poke and more! They are not one of those fly by night short timer poke shops that have closed due to ripping off customers like "Ahi Asses" for example. Holy macaroni, Batman! When my coworker first introduced me to this spot, I was a skeptic. I have to admit, I generally like my food places to be pretty. It adds to my experience, it makes me feel like I'm bound to have a great tasting meal...and this spot didn't make me so sure. But my coworker was adamant! And I like persistence! ;) HYPES: I got the Katsu ahi and let me just say...OH MY LANTA.....what was there not to like about the thin crust on the ahi, or that glorious orange sauce that tastes better than the shoyu+wasabi combo on the Katsu (I think it's salad dressing, but I put it on everything instead) over rice annnnnd salad?! This plate stole my heart. I'd be such a dummy to not go back and try other things! GRIPES: Just the general vicinity & the lack of visual up keep. I am so glad I don't work near here. I would be 300 pounds heavier, and in massive crab-stuffed-ahi debt. No joke. The first time I had Monarch, a customer of mine dropped it off as a "thank-you" (or bribe, as I like to affectionately call it). Never had I seen something in a styrofoam box be so beautiful. It was practically glowing as I picked it up with my plastic fork. No one in my office had ever eaten Monarch either, so I showed my lunch off proudly. I promptly sat at my desk and devoured the entire thing. We went twice in the following week. I have eaten nothing else from Monarch, so my five stars is only for the crab stuffed ahi. It's stupendously, ridiculously delicious. Yes, parking sucks. Deal with it. Yes, its pricey for plate lunch. Deal with it. Yes, they may not be the friendliest. Deal with it.
