Mona's! A small family owned shop in the foothills. Go there for the Bear claws! And the cheese danish AND the cinnamon rolls. All their sweets are quite divine. They bake their own bread too- so if you don't have a sweet-tooth, go there for a sandwich. I don't think there's another Danish bakery in town...give them a try! Found this special place on yelp when I needed to bring pastries to a brunch. I was not disappointed! I arrived a few minutes after they opened, along with the regulars! The baked goods are hit or miss. The muffins are usually pretty good. The cafe is small and employees don't wear masks/gloves when handling the food, which I find to be gross especially because some of the goods are not kept under glass. read more

Mona's has always been the place to go for the best bread and pastries in Tucson, no other bakery comes close. Everything is made from scratch with only pure ingredients. I hate when people think it's OK to criticize food and food items, when it is VERY obvious that they have NO idea what it's supposed to taste like. I bet those are the same people that, takes a fine steak, cook it so it's like leather and drench it in some awful steak-sauce in a bottle. Being originally from Denmark, I always come here, when visiting my in-laws - and I usually go there every morning to get my Rundstykker and pastries. You know it's authentic, because the rundstykker (Hard rolls) and pastries go stale, if you save them. A concept hardly known here in the US, where all food is stuffed with preservatives. read more

Say "nej" to Mona's I hate to write a bad review. But I'm going to have to. Danish men are hot, but this bakery is not. I walked into the small NW side bakery mesmerized by the beauty of the products. I must say these were beautiful confections and the only thing I could think of was "Eat me" After going through the selections of Italian and french pastries I chose something with an almond paste, a bear claw, and a chocolate chip cookie. A side note for those with food allergies, this place likes to put almond paste in everything. The cookie I gave away to a coworker (in hindsight, I should have kept the cookie for myself) but ate the bear claw and the other pastry. The bear claw tasted like a claw from a real sweaty bear- salty. The almond paste thingy had something in it to numb ones taste bud. This is not a cheap bakery either. I would try going to Fry's or a Basha's bakery instead. Costco's pastries are definitely a better alternative. I want to allow the Danish to have jobs, but maybe not in bakeries. read more

I read many of the positive and negative reviews, and decided to try them for myself. The staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered 8 different pastries and some danish hard rolls. Everything tasted good and was fresh. Prices are a bit high. Any items that can be purchased from Sam's or QT (cheese danish, croissant, etc) would be of similar quality and much less expensive. Stick with specialty items that you can't get anywhere else. read more

We recently moved into the area and were very excited at the thought of walking to a fabulous pasty shop on Sunday mornings, enjoying the paper with fresh pastries and coffee. I guess we should have checked the hours on the door first. They are not open on Sunday. Bummer. Seems that a pastry shop,would be open on the mornings that people tend to have off work. What can I say except that this place is about as authentic as it gets, and delivers the goods. Now, to be fair, they are expensive, but they are also serving up proper, well-made, true-to-form Danish pastries, rolls and bread. Having been to Denmark many times and sampled real Danish bakeries on every visit (how could you not!), this is as close to the real thing as I've ever found in the states. One of the owners actually has formal training in baking Danish goods, and it absolutely shows. The hard rolls are absolutely to die for, and I buy them up in quantity whenever I'm in Tucson. The owners are even cool with letting me buy up some of their fresh made, unheated and bagged rolls so I can throw them into the freezer and heat them up whenever I've got a craving up in Phoenix. How awesome is that? From the hard rolls to the bear claws to the marzipan truffles and sinfully delicious Napoleon hats, you simply cannot go wrong with this place. I don't care about the price when the food is this good, it's worth it and then some. If you're looking for the real deal, and you know what real Danish pastries are supposed to taste like, you will NOT be disappointed by this place. I've been going for many years and I continue to be impressed. I sorely wish they'd open a location in Phoenix, but until then, I'll have to stock up whenever I'm in Tucson. For the most part i feel monas is a good bakery for tucson standards. Im not crazy about the bread quality and size vs price. Most of the danish is delicious. I have been passed DAY OLD stuff a few times!!! Not cool at these prices!! i do think the owners needs to be a bit more appreciative of his customers. This bakery is fantastic. I'm Danish and this was as close as it gets to what I would buy at home on an early Sunday morning. The marzipan truffle brought me right back to my childhood. How cool is that? So happy to find that at least a handful of people in the US actually prefer food that is not processed to death and full of preservatives to keep them from going stale and moldy for a month. Correctly done bakery items don't last long and that is the beauty of baking/cooking without additives. We currently live in Tempe, but I'll swing by Mona's bakery whenever we are close to Tucson. I stopped here for lunch and it was delicious. All of their quiche, pastries, soups, salads and sandwiches are made from scratch ! You can't go wrong with anything you order to eat and the price. They come in at 3:00 in the morning to begin baking and whipping up all the yummy items in the dessert display case. I couldn't make up my mind so ended up ordering and eating a slice of quiche, soup of the day (chicken tortilla) and ham and cheese croissant. I laugh at the "critical" reviews - whenever someone says that grocery store pastries are better because they're cheaper tells you all you need to know about that individual's stature as a critic. People are not used to paying the prices because people are not used to even seeing quality baked goods, much less appreciate what make them different. You'd swear that there's at least a dollar worth of (real) butter in some of these delicacies... Mmmm, I'm headed there right now, and I live across town. read more

What a great place, much better than Beyond Bread because the bread doesn't overpower the sandwiches !!!! I was in Tucson on business this week and stopped in to Mona's in my way back to Phoenix. I'm originally from København and get nostalgic for the tastes of home. For that same reason, I can also be extremely critical when let down. No let down here! I purchased a few Kransekager and a large Kringle. My wife and I ate the Kransekager last night for dessert and they were perfectly delicious! I'm now sitting and enjoying a piece of Kringle for breakfast and if I close my eyes, I'm back in Danmark! Found a little slice of heaven! Walked over the other evening after a dance class. Was very happy with the friendly and outgoing lady behind the counter! Seriously. If you want homemade European pastries in Tucson, this is it. Danishes, cinnamon rolls (I prefer the flat ones), cinnamon crisp! I have not eaten anything here that wasn't to die for. Yesterday the coffee was a little under par, but I didn't even care because it's the only time anything hasn't been awesome. They have breakfast and lunch sandwiches as well-- also delicious. If it wasn't for the Ace next door, you might think you were sitting on a sidewalk in Denmark (close your eyes-do it). The owners always seem to be there and are very friendly. I buy their pastries at the farmers market and they are fantastic! I usually get the cherry turnover and the bear claw. The bear claw is exactly as it should be. Its light and flaky with a coissant like pastry and I think the almond flavor is perfect. Bear Claws are all make with almonds and almond paste. The turnover is light and flaky as well and the filling is yummy. I don't like my pastries to be too sweet which is probably why I love these danishes. I will say that I don't buy them too often because they are way over priced. I payed $3.00 for each pastry last week and just the week before they were 2 for $5. Still too much in my opinion. I think they would sell more if they would lower the price. I have yet to try their bread but it looks good. read more

I ate the croissant but through the rest away. $20 for two croissant sandwiches made in a microwave , bear claw, and cup of coffee..so disappointing. Plus refill charges for coffee!!
