Been trying to support more local spots so my sister got me a gift card from here. It was incredibly frustrating to get it to work and after hours of back and forth with the website, Toast, and restaurant I almost gave up ordering. Then I found out you have to order above the gift card value for it to work.. which defeats the purpose. Plus a 10%+ pickup fee which also is absurd. Owner tried to help but ultimately said they couldn't do anything. I ordered over $120 worth of food and got a small bag. Nothing extra for the frustrating experience that they knew about. And the portions were extremely small for each item being nearly $30 after these fees. Worst value was tiramisu which was $11 for a piece smaller than my palm. Come on guys. You can do better. We're trying to keep places alive yet getting nickel and dimed with no customer support. Wouldn't go back but wish them the best if they fix their website and review their pricing to quality. read more

Mondello is family-owned, family-run, and it feels very much like you are sitting down to eat in your grandma's kitchen. We've never had a meal that was anything short of delicious. I'm not a big bread guy, but my better half regularly buys a loaf of Mondello bread to take home with her after a meal. Sofana, the owner, her daughter Aurelia (hope I'm spelling her name correctly), and her staff make everything by hand and there is nothing quite like being made to feel like you are part of the family when you walk through the door. Wonderful focaccia and oil followed with a first course of Caesar salad, then we each chose a special: I went with the wild boar ragu on fettuccine and he had salmon ravioli. So many things on the menu are my favorites that I have trouble deciding, but often the daily special wins. I almost always order the escarole salad. Escarole is a favorite of mine and I hardly ever see it on menus. The service is attentive and friendly. Many of the staff recognize us and greet us, which is a pleasure. Truly a horrible experience at Mondello's for Valentine's Day -- rude service, inconsistent and subpar food, and even food poisoning, which was dismissed when brought up. Honestly, I feel scammed, and it seems Mondello doesn't value their customers' health, loyalty, or support at all. 1. Chaotic & Mismanaged Service When we arrived, it was immediately clear the restaurant was struggling to keep up. We were then told that because we had a later reservation essentially of the menu was unavailable and other dishes had substitutes (mind you there are like 15 items on the menu). The hostess repeatedly reassured guests that replacements were "just as good" and only minor changes. Meanwhile, what a young woman (the hostess's daughter) waitressing was openly rude throughout the night -- giving customers attitude/being dismissive, and commenting on how this was an awful night (so loudly everyone in the restaurant could here.) 2. Subpar Food & Mistakes The quality didn't match the price or expectations. - My $18 Hugo spritz tasted like cough syrup. - Our dishes arrived incorrectly more than once. - I received arugula with mozzarella, followed by another plate of arugula with prosciutto instead of what we had ordered. When I pointed this out, I was told that this was what we ordered. 3. Food Safety Nightmare & Unapologetic Billing The biggest concern is safety. My boyfriend ordered the clams (one of the few remaining menu options). About 30 minutes later, he became violently ill and had to leave the table to vomit for 15 minutes. We had to leave immediately to take my boyfriend home. I admitted I didn't know whether it was the clams or something else. While he was outside still unwell, I asked if they would offer any accommodation given everything that had happened. The response: "No we don't do that. You got everything you ordered? And you turned down dessert." The young waitress literally came over and tossed the $200 check on the table without even looking at me. 4. Dismissive & Unsafe Follow-Up My boyfriend remained sick throughout the night and into the next day, so we reported the incident to Seattle Public Health. When I called the restaurant the next day: - They dismissed the possibility of food poisoning, suggesting it may have been a personal issue for my boyfriend - Told me it wasn't possible because they "only get the freshest fish" - Noted that no one else had complained or was ill that evening - I had to explicitly ask for a refund and was told to call back later to speak with a manager. This was not just disorganized, it was negligent, unsafe, and dismissive. I have no doubt they will try and come on here and do damage control in the reviews, as they appear to have done several other times. My favorites: Gorgonzola gnocchi (they need to bring it back on the main menu), fettuccine w/sausage or meatballs, ravioli with lemon cream sauce, the bolognese and more. The bread served at the table always feels warm and fresh, and the ambiance of the space is always cozy and romantic. It's a family run restaurant, and you can really tell with how well the staff knows the menu. The neighbourhood is super quaint, and there has always been seating available for late-evening dining. It is a walkable little village that boasts vintage furniture stores, half a dozen restaurants, an amazing French bakery, and even a couple wine bars. The key to a 5 star review for an Italian restaurant is serving a wonderful crusty bread or a soft buttery focaccia. (Or both like Antonello does in Costa Mesa, Calif.) They serve neither here. Excellent meal at Mondello on Saturday evening! The restaurant is located in nice area of Magnolia...it was pretty empty at 6PM when we came, but filled up by the end. The owner waited on us and we enjoyed chatting her up throughout the evening. We had Burrata and Bruschetta for appetizers... both were very good, but just missing that special something to make 5 stars. The Burrata came with tomatoes - I would have loved some small toasts or bread with olive oil to accompany. Entrees were delicious - I enjoyed a veal special that was over the top of homemade pasta - wonderful texture and flavor. My wife had the spaghetti bolognese - the sauce was on the sweeter side which I enjoyed, but wasn't her absolute fave. For dessert! Highly recommend the Tiramisu, which is homemade in their restaurant, as well as the Mousse, which was dense and rich. The Chocolate/Hazelnut ball isn't made in house, but does come from Italy! This place is just fine, at best... But, it used to be spectacular and felt like such a special and rare experience every time I went there--like I did for my birthday five years in a row. Unfortunately, my last three visits were underwhelming, disappointing, and just kind of sad. The food quality, as well that of the service, seem to suggest that some major change has occurred, or that they became sufficiently successful and busy to the point that things are allowed to fall through the cracks. The puttanesca I always order arrived with lukewarm sauce and pasta that was a few minutes short of al dente; the tomatoes in the caprese were so underripe that they were visibly pale and almost crunchy. I used to tell everyone about this former hidden gem, and was more than happy to travel there in traffic from distant newborn neighborhoods. Now I live within ten minutes of Mondello, but after the aforementioned last three visits, I'd rather go to places in Magnolia that still feel like they're thoughtfully run and continuously serving really good food--like the Korean restaurant, Mura, and the remarkable Yume Sushi. read more

I found this restaurant on Groupon while I was looking at the different deals (hehe) and decided to grab its deal to go with my boyfriend. We decided to check it out on one of our date nights. It's located next to the Nutty Squirrel Gelato and across of Magnolia Park on 33rd Ave W in Magnolia. There's only street parking around the area that won't be too difficult to find. We ordered the Bruschetta Classica to share. Delicious! Nicely seasoned on the entire dish that made me want even more. The baguettes were toasted nicely too! I chose the Squid Ink Spaghetti Al Gamberoni. Honestly, I'm not a big red sauce fan, but the shrimp and squid ink pasta really appealed to me LOL. And my not-so-big-of-a-fan on red sauce won. The noodles were, I felt, a bit over cooked. It was kind of almost mushy which I ain't a big fan of as I liked my pasta al dente. The flavor was kind of missing. There were tomatoes but that was basically all I tasted in my dish. It was probably because of my preference that I didn't really care for it. I should have stuck with my original order honestly LOL. but the shrimps were very plump and cooked nicely. My boyfriend got the Gnocchi al Gorgonzola. This was very good! Super rich and creamy with a chewiness to the gnocchi. Yum! It was a bit overwhelmingly rich with cheese that I knew I wouldn't be able to finish the entire dish without some sides or protein. But delicious! We also ordered some drinks. Our server recommended one of her favorite red wines (can't remember the name of it), and I gotta hand it to her, it was delicious! So we made the best of it, or tried. We felt almost ignored, as though we were a burden. We got one order out bread to start and before our appetizers were delivered, someone came and took the empty bread dish, the olive oil and our bread plates (I wanted more bread!), and THEN brought the same used bread plates back to our table and laid them in front of each of us, not knowing whose plate was whose. The food finally started arriving, and it was just so so and definitely overpriced. And we just felt like an afterthought. Tucked away in Magnolia is this little hidden gem, Mondello, that is probably the most authentic Italian cuisine I've ever had in Seattle. I've even been to the famous North End in Boston, home of Italian fare, and Mondello is comparable to that quality. First off, the service was above and beyond. We were served by a very sweet and charming woman who is clearly passionate about the food that Mondello serves. She raved about how this restaurant has the best carbonara in town and, boy, did she not disappoint! We loved having her as a server and enjoyed chatting with her in our short little exchanges. The food itself was so flavorful, delicious, and such a steal for the pricing point. I got the squid ink pasta which is homemade in house, while the rest of my table ordered the gnocchi, the veal, and the carbonara. If I were to come here again, I would get the carbonara dish which makes me feel like I'm being swept away to Italy with every bite. The gnocchi dish was delicious but weighs more on the heavier side due to its rich porcini mushroom and cream based sauce. The veal was also a favorite amongst the group if you are looking for an item on their menu that's lighter. Overall, amazing experience and such a cute establishment. But the standout is an off menu dessert: homemade chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches. Yum. I never write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so because of this amazing dessert. As we perused the dessert menu one evening, our server said she made chocolate chip cookies that day and could make ice cream cookies for our table. We jumped at the chance and, WOW, they were the best cookies and the ice cream just made it decadent and delicious. When I made our reservation for last night, I messaged the restaurant and asked if they had the ice cream cookies and they responded they would make them for us!!
