What an exquisite place for dinner. I came in without a reservation and was in the mood for fish. The staff was very attentive and made me feel like I was respected. I ordered oysters and let the waiter pick a couple and the swordfish which came on a bed of caponata. The swordfish was fresh and I quickly sunk my teeth envisioning it's life in the ocean. T The caponata was divine and I felt like I experience what the french say "a little death" after an immense euphoria. I couldn't keep my fork down. Came here last night for to satisfy a craving for crabcakes...that, ultimately, was not satiated. I seemed to wait quite a while for my waiter, Travis, to greet me. No worries, not a big deal, it happens. Katie, a very personable bartender notice me and took my drink orders. Paper Plane - if you're a fan of sour drinks, you'd probably enjoy this refreshing number. Old Fashioned- a bit on the sweet side but delicious overall Crabcake appetizer - disappointing. Not only was it flavorless but there was also a slight hint of an ammonia taste which usually indicates spoiling. I took 2-3 bites then set it aside. Travis passed by many times and not once came up to check on how my meal was going, if I needed anything, nothing. It was Katie who finally came over and asked me I was enjoying the crabcake to which I replied with my concerns. She apologized and asked if I would like anything else and I just declined but eventually asked for a basket of bread - something that I notice everyone else had but myself. I LOVE FISH and Mongers Market delivered! I use to frequent another local favorite but it appears I'm due for a change. I enjoyed the catch of the day, sole and my daughter was ok with her rainbow trout. (I think she liked my dish better.) I was a little disappointed with the rather pricey but definitely tasty single crab cake appetizer. Everyone from the hostesses to our very knowledgeable and attentive server were super nice. I can literally say my cup was never empty. And the atmosphere...simply decorated and relaxed. Light music filled the air as we enjoyed our delicious food. I've heard great things about this place for a long time and finally got to try it. The restaurant is a play on a seafood market but higher end. I loved the bar area and the seashell wall decorations. The food and service was great. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We came by for lunch which wasn't as busy so we were able to walk right in and be seated. The food was top tier very fresh. I had never tried a Cesar salad with calamari and I was highly impressed. The fish tacos were light and buttery melt in your mouth with fresh flavors. The mussels were perfectly cooked and the pasta was delicious. I will definitely be back to try more entrees! read more

Dropped in for the first time on a Thursday night. Menu was extensive and had mostly seafood options. Ordered 2 drinks, the Crudo and crab claws to start. There was no price by the Crudo. Then ordered 1 crab cake, and their special which was a whole pan seared grouper. Food was tasty. But did get a little shocked when I got the bill for $178. The Crudo was $28 and only had 4 little bite size pieces! The whole fish was tasty, but not worth $60. We enjoyed the visit, but it's definitely over priced and under portioned. My friend and I shared a blue crab sammie sandwich which was fresh, tasty and served with delicious pickles and crispy fries that looked overdone but tasted good. We did wish for a salt shaker but had eaten the fries by the time the waitress came back. We also shared a poke bowl with all fresh ingredients. While it was good, it seemed dry and lacking a bit of flavor. (My daughter said her poke bowl had been served with a sauce so perhaps our sauce was left behind?) Service was okay but nothing special. Dinner at Monger was one of the best new meals I've tried in Austin in a long time. We did a "girl dinner" of sorts and sat at the bar. We started with cold: oysters from PEI and New Brunswick, crab fingers and peel and eat shrimp. All very good, no fishy taste, very fresh. Plenty of accompaniments (lemon, cocktail, etc). We then had apps - shishitos and mussels and a side of their lobster Mac and cheese - as our entree and all were truly fantastic.Shishitos were sweet, lobster Mac and cheese creamy and decadent, and the mussels were fresh and spicy. For dessert we tried the panna cota and the olive oil cake. My husband loved both, I liked the olive oil cake more because I'm not a huge fan of goat cheese. We still cleared our plates. We had margaritas and sangria. Drinks were very clean and light. Perfect for seafood and summer. Six drinks, plus the meal above and tip was a little more than $300. All I can say is wow -- amazing experience. Great drink selection and a great menu with a variety of seafood dishes to please everyone. We ordered the bib salad to start -- which is great to share with another person as an appetizer or side salad. Then we ordered two of the specials -- scallops with brussels and a kabocha squash puree, and lobster gnocci with spinach and mascarpone. I kid you not, these were two of the best meals I've ever had. So I can't even imagine how good they're menu staples are. Service was great too, to top it all off. As a big seafood fan who is always on the hunt for the best dishes in Austin, this is by far the best seafood I've had in town. I highly recommend Mongers! We had a more disappointing experience at Monger's this past weekend than last time and it definitely soured our views on the place. Nothing was capital B bad, but there were definitely quality and service issues. Perhaps this place has been resting on its laurels after sitting pretty in its current location for a few years now. We came here with one set of our parents and our kiddo for an early dinner--we still appreciate the decor and our daughter was tickled pink by the strands of seashells right by our table. Here's a pet peeve that we always yammer about: when the server doesn't let you know what isn't available on the menu BEFORE he takes the drink order. One of us was really in the mood for a sangria, and, of course, he comes back to tell us that they're out. Good job. Wine and beer it was. The peel-n-eats were superb and the cocktail sauce was incredible; the smoked fish dip wasn't as impressive this time around. For mains, one of us got the gumbo with a side of broccolini and honestly, the gumbo was incredible. The broth was so rich and flavorfu--plus how the crab was served (half in the shell) was unique. 10/10 winner. The broccolini was nothing that you couldn't make at home. The cod dinner, however, was god awful. The cod seemed overcooked and the sauce basically tasted like pure butter. The wilted spinach was spinach+butter and the whole thing was a boring, uninspired mess. Our daughter's fish-n-chips weren't bad. Service wasn't exactly attentive, but they got the job done. If you like the raw bar, this is a must visit. I enjoyed the raw plates more than the cooked plates as seafood does not need to be cook thoroughly but given some people preference I understand why they cooked it a little big longer. We were fortunately to grab a table by calling when we saw that the earliest reservation available at the time was 8:30 pm. Called and was able to get a 6:30 pm reservation, so make sure you call! Coming early does have it advantage as the place only have 12 designated parking and coming early gets you into the main dinning area. Food wise, raw bar is the way to go. They had four types of oyster, mainly east coast so that is a plus. Each oyster is priced the same so there is not a lot of math needed there. Seems like the crudo and the cerviche is a seasonal item as they are market price and whats available. We had the escolar crudo and the scalloped cerviche. Yummy, the escolar was well cut, the slice was bountiful and the taste was perfect. The sauced in which it sat compliment the dish. The fish was so good, definitely as must ordered item. Personally I do not like cerviche to sit too long in the juice where it turn white and hard. Monger made it perfect where its still pretty raw to maintains its sweetness and the juice compliment the scallop. One thing I do wish is that they add chips to the cerviche or tortilla for scooping. I ordered my chip a la carte to compliment the cerviche. For starter, I highly recommend the smoked fish dip, it was wonderful starter to our meal, small portion but sufficient. Our entree for the night was the gulf grouper and the special "Cioppino". It was good but nothing to write about. Try their dessert! We had key lime pie and the almond cake. It was actually pretty good! I don't usually care for dessert but these two I would recommend. The key lime pie was tart like it should and the almond cake looks dense but is not and taste wonderful. It has the almond taste and not too sweet. It was a very good meal and I would recommend the place! Enjoy!!! we had a good time at mongers. give me a bottle of wine and i'm gonna have a ball. however, the food was alright. we got the crudo, beet salad, mussels, and scallops. crudo was great and really fresh. beet salad was disappointing. the mussels were delicious with a citrus forward sauce and very fresh bread. scallops were great with a delicious corn purée and toasted pepitas. the ravioli on the scallops dish were just bad. hard and tasted like cardboard. we spent $180 after tip for two people. i had a nice time, ambiance in the restaurant was good but the food was mostly forgettable. likely will not come back for anything but the raw bar. read more

The interior of the restaurant is very open with more intimate lighting. Perfect place to go on a date. We sat at the bar which was nice. The ambience here is really fun and the drinks were delicious! I got some oysters on the half shell which were really good and all of the food was super yummy. The electricity went out so we had to write down what we ordered on a piece of paper and they billed us a couple days later. Apparently there's something wrong with the electricity on that whole block because I hear this happens all the time. That makes me a little bit wary about going back in this hot weather. I love raw fish and ordered their Spanish mackerel ceviche. It was light and well balanced. I love the citrus sauce the raw fish sits in. That being said, their booked entrees were my favorite! We had a beet arugula salad which was so amazing! Well balanced with ricotta and candied nuts! Lobster roll with a side of Brussels (instead of fries). The lobster was tenders and flavorful. While the Brussels were lightly crispy and finished off with Parm. Like I said, I always am a big fan of raw fish, but the cooked entrees are why I'm coming back! Will def continue trying more food! We ordered oysters (chef's choice) and they were very sweet and fresh. We also had the blue crab cake - this was to die for! Lots of crab and not much filler. I've had lunch here twice and, after ordering the fish sandwich the first time, I find it impossible to try any other entree. My loss, I'm sure, because the menu looks interesting, but this is the best fish sandwich I've had in my life (and I eat plenty of fish). A generous piece of grouper, lightly fried, is presented simply: with the freshest of buns, lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Bacon is an optional addition. My dining companion enjoyed the fish tacos and said they were delicious. We shared the garlic parmesan wedge fries as an appetizer. I'm not sure what the chef does to prepare these delightful pieces of potato, but they are magnificent. If you like fries. And who doesn't? Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, sprinkled with garlic and freshly grated parmesan.
