What a gem! My mom wanted to come here for Mother's Day, and I highly recommend making a reservation. The space is small and you're most likely going to wait without one. However, the wait is definitely worth it. It's located down the stairs when you walk in, so it has a vibe that's somewhat hidden. It's definitely one of a kind. For the first time, we actually planned ahead and got reservations. This was really helpful, because like usual, they were really busy. We got the special - Red, White, and Bolognese pizza. It was a nice different take on pizza. We usually get the meat lovers pizzas, but we were intrigued by the description of the special. Instead of hunks of meats, it had dollops of Bolognese sauce. Our first visit to Monte Bello was a delightful experience...quality food and a unique dinning experience. Located on the St. Louis County/St. Louis City dividing line, the restaurant is in the basement of the building with the narrow entry requiring patrons to go down several steps. We ordered a large Meat Lovers pizza and some lightly fried rice/gouda cheese/bacon balls. The fried balls were fantastic; light and favorable. The Meat Lovers pizza was delicious; fresh ingredients, homemade Italian sausage, bacon, etc... with so many toppings it still easily fed all three of us. We were wondering why thin crust pizza would take that long. Well, I still don't know why but I can say it was worth the wait. My husband and I were in the mood to try a new pizza place tonight and decided on Monte Bello after seeing it well rated in a video of STL pizza spots. It did not disappoint! It is in a casual spot, and we had awesome service. They do have an explanation on the table that their pizzas take 30-35 minutes to cook, but our drinks were always filled during the wait and we were able to enjoy some toasted raviolis during the wait. The toasted raviolis tasted homemade and had a good amount of meat in them. We got Montebello Special pizza and it was delicious. The ambiance was that of a old fashion Italian restaurant. Small but very quaint. We went there for pizza and it was some of the best I ever had and the beer I got to accompany the pizza was ice cold and really hit the spot. Brittany, our server was very pleasant and attentive even though we came in less than an hour before they closed. That is always the case at other restaurants. First time I had been to this place supposed to be in the St. Louis Pizza family. I ordered my pizza. They told me it would be ready in an hour. I waited an hour. I didn't show up for an hour and 15 minutes then had to sit there and wait for another hour, and the pizza was definitely not worth the weight. I can tell you even if the pizza was done on time I would not recommend going back the parking lot is a disaster. The place looks very rundown and dirty inside and it's not in the best neighborhood. There's hardly any lighting on the parking lot so if you do go there, make sure you park right in front of the Restaurant. Don't waste your money or your time go to Peroni's or Angelo's. My wife and I were in St Louis on a weekend trip from out of town and I was trying my best to find where I should try The Lou's best St Louis style pizza and Toasted Ravioli all in one spot. Everything I read said to come to Monte Bello's, so that's what we did. We got to talk about the ambiance here first though. You open the door and immediately descend down some stairs to get to a low-ceiling basement with tables covered in red and white checkered table cloth..... and it was awesome! Felt like a round table meeting with all of St Louis' mob bosses was taking place somewhere where I couldn't see lol. So first were the toasted raviolis. I'm sure they are homemade but you can tell they're also frozen after being made from scratch which is perfectly fine, just probably would have been better if that weren't the case. I knew they were frozen because four my raviolis were still kind of cold in the middle. This is going to sound mean, but they tasted like Tostinos pizza rolls to me. They were just kind of bland on their own. The meat inside also had a very pasty texture. The only way to enjoy them was to dip them in their marinara (which is really good) and then sprinkle some parm on top of the marinara. But still, i was a bit disappointed. Ok Pizza Time! The large pepperoni pizza that we ordered definitely saved the day (despite taking an unusually long time to get to our table). Thin crispy almost cracker-like crust cut into random squares topped with that delicious red sauce and some super savory cheese instantly sent us to our happy place! PS the pepperoni was under the cheese. What a flavorful bite of pizza. Delicious. We absolutely loved it. I found a little article about this place and because my family loves Pizza we decided to try it. It is an older building that could use some work but not run down by any means. You go down a tiny staircase to the dining room and we were seated immediately. The only thing I didn't like is that the bathroom is upstairs and being disabled not convenient to me. We ordered fried mushrooms and at first were brought mushrooms containing little ice blocks that were unappetizing however they were quickly remade and piping hot the second time, and the waitress remembered our desire for red sauce which was a bonus since we'd already been served and had to wait twice. We got the meat lovers pizza and the Johnny B Good pizza and I must admit this pizza was delicious. The crust is really what makes this pizza. It's an odd shape making it more homemade to me. The toppings were very generous and the sauce good but I was raised on a sweeter sauces and the sauce here is sweeter than others...it is more than compensated by the great array of toppings and delicious crust. We paired ours with a side salad and their house made ranch dressing. The dressing was incredibly flavorful and complimented the salad wonderfully. Our server was very busy but provided exactly what we needed. The building is situated in the middle of a residential area but has plenty of parking. The dining is down a small set of stairs and the ceiling in the dining area is fairly low. This place has so much character!! Prices are fair for what you get. The pizza itself was outstanding, with a yummy blend of cheeses and a sweet sauce that left me craving more. A very unique pizza taste. However, the wait time for pickup ended up nearly two hours, and the restaurant's basement-like setting was compact. Despite these drawbacks, the quality of the pizza made it worth the wait.
