I'm in the same boat with the other one-star reviewers. Our VRBO rental was carelessly managed and discheveOur check-in process was confusing. And we received ZERO response via text or phone call after asking for help, as well as requesting info on some items we thought we left behind. Add insult to injury, when I dropped off our keys and politely offered some constructive feedback, I just got robotic smiles and nods, with a glazed look that pretty much said, "We don't really care. Have a nice day." ::TO THE BUSINESS OWNER'S PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE RESPONSE:: 1. There was no broken bed. 2. The cheap vertical blind's fascia flew off as we tried to open them. Again...cheap. 3. Re: check-in/out process...We received detailed emails which failed to point out the unlocked box our keys would be waiting in at the office. Also, thanks for "looking" for my items left behind. We did end up finding them, however I don't think it's too much to expect a call, text or email response. Michelle Larkin (the property manager) didn't reply to a single text or phone call from day one. THAT is bad management and bad customer service. In summary, the $2.5 million house we stayed in makes Motel 6 seem posh. Yes, the view, the location, and even the kitchen was very nice. It could just be SO much better with a tasteful update, mostly in furniture, bedding, light bulbs and bath fixtures. From a prospective client/ property owners viewpoint: Why on earth would anyone choose to use a property manager that does the bare minimum (all online/ automated) but most importantly has no interest in meeting prospective tenants in person?? I own a few properties in Silicon Valley, which I manage myself, and I absolutely prefer to meet my prospective tenants in person (to better get a sense of whom the applicant is, as I truly care for my home). From a prospective tenants view: I initially introduced myself in a "resume" style email and asked to meet the property manager Matt Collins, whereas I was directed to an automated system. I viewed the property through the automated system and reported back to Matt that I had liked the home. He then encouraged me to apply for the property which I promptly did. The entire process from viewing to application was online, automated, which I understand is becoming standard these days- but found it odd could not get the property manager on the phone nor did he have any interest in meeting me person. He did however reply somewhat prompt to my emails. After a few days I asked for an update and he noted he was sorting through multiple applications. Then was told shortly after another applicant was selected (someone also very qualified, but whom had submitted an application before me). Very curious why would this company encourage applicants to continue to apply at the point in time where they already had a qualified candidate (or multiple)? It makes me question whether they are "selectively" discriminating between qualified applicants or simply capitalizing on the multiple application fees. For reference I am a homeowner/ property manager in the Bay Area, and recently moved here for work. I have a 798 credit score, and have an income that is 4x + the rent of the property I applied for. I am also a meticulously clean person, a non smoker, and have stellar references. I feel like I was given the total run around and time wasted chasing a lead on a property that was "already taken". Not the worst PM company in the area, but definitely far from the best, nor someone whom I would trust with my home based on their bare minimum work ethic and screening methods. read more

Recently used Monterey Bay rentals to help us find a great house to vacation for a few days. Love them they made it super easy to find a great house. Customer service was excellent and followed up to see how our stay was. I highly recommend the property we rented it was right across the street looking over the ocean. We got to watch whales go by and seals laying on the beach with their babies. We were walking distance from canary row and the outlets ( not much of an outlet though). The house had everything we needed , it was clean with comfy beds. While the deck wasn't wide it was long enough for 10 people to have pizza and wine over looking the ocean waves! read more

if you're looking to book a vacation rental and want a painless way to do so, monterey bay property management is a great choice. i had looked at hotels, airbnb, craigslist, etc before finally settling on monterey bay rentals. they have the easiest booking policy, are extremely responsive, and will take care of any issues during your stay. they will also periodically check in to see how you're doing. i loved that they have an easy reservation system (online), great photos that really represent their properties well, a large selection of properties (condos to large mansions), and properties are priced right (some cheaper than hotel stays). i worked with michelle larkins and stayed at the ocean habor beach house, which was literally right on the beach. i had a few issues to start, and they were addressed within 24 hrs. i even requested a few items which they promptly provided. coordinating keys to check in and out is easy - you pick up at their location and drop off at their location. *** one issue that i didnt like was the reservation charge and mandatory housekeeping fee, which if you stay awhile adds up.*** overall recommended! read more

We really did some research as far as hotels and other rental properties. Sometimes it's hard to find a good fit when you're traveling with animals. So happy we ended up with this rental. It was absolutely perfect for the dogs. The backyard was huge and the views were incredible! Sail-away was the vacation rental we had, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, with another bedroom in a little outside unit. The only negative is that the bathrooms are both master adjacent. Wasn't a big deal for us but I could see if you're traveling with a group of friends it might be a little cumbersome. We'll most certainly be coming back to this property. read more

It is quite the long story that I would be happy to share but in sum, there is nothing less I would rather do than give any amount of income to MB Property Management/Jan Leasure. She was very rude, sneaky, the staff in the office also of the same curt, snippy, rude demeanor. Contracts are completely slanted towards the owner, with ridiculous stipulations. It was as if I was the owner of house having to fix the dish washer, shower etc.... There was NO heat in my house and I mentioned it multiple times. The minute I mentioned my house having no heat before I signed the lease, she pulled the lease from me as she knew it was illegal to rent a house with no heating. She increased my rent in my new lease BY 45% after living in my house 7 years and an impeccable tenantship. I received the house in complete disarray (by a diffrent owner) and I increased the property value and attractiveness of the house exposing the ocean view, power washing all the stains, improving the overall look at feel. I loved my house. It was a very heartless, cold, unwavering business interaction I had with her and I will never live in a Monterey Bay Property rented space or buy from them ever. Please tell me why it takes this vacation rental place to take almost a year to return a deposit... We rented from them last september of 2013. We cleaned the property from head to toe they said they would send it back. I think they are CROOKS. I do not recommend them at all. Monterey is full of great rental agencies to rent from for your vacation needs or short term rentals. Dont let them steal from you as they did us. As the owner of a rental property in Monterey Bay, I suggest you to avoid MBPM if you are looking for a management company AND If you are a potential tenant, as I have been on both sides already. I moved out of the country six years ago, so I left my property since day one 100% in MBPM's hands. Why I stayed this long with this company if they are so bad, you may ask? For the first 3.5 years I was lucky to have good tenants. Therefore, I was not being a "difficult client" (as MBPM's owner later called me) because I received my money on time, I was not in Monterey to see the condition of my property, and the tenants would only use my house on weekends (it was used more like a corporate retreat). Then, after these tenants left, everything went downhill. While these tenants were great in a way, the house was left to deteriorate (despite being a beautiful house). When my house was vacant after their departure, MBPM had a difficult time renting it furnished. They just gave as an excuse that "there was no market for a furnished house in Monterey" (despite having it furnished all this time), and their only and easiest suggestion was to rent it unfurnished instead of telling me the condition of the house or to try other strategies. It was not until I had a different rental agent that things started to improve...at least for some time. MBPM lacks tremendous attention to detail, especially on furnished rental properties. You may compare the quality of service that sanctuaryvacationrentals.com offers vs. the quality of MBPM. The difference between both companies is like driving a beautiful luxury car and then downgrade to an old Chevrolet MBPM didn't even check every time a tenant left my property. The doors of my house were left WIDE OPEN for days after tenants checked out...this happened twice! The first time it was my gardener who had to call the company to notify about this. The second time, just two months ago, it was me who found the doors completely open and very inviting for any burglar to come in. If I was a tentant, I would have complained about the condition of how I found my house. The carpet smelled badly and had lots of stains; the kitchen stove was all greasy, the bathrooms were not cleaned properly, dead plants in the interior, the doors full of finger marks as well as in some walls, the garbage containers full to the top and absolutely disgusting (this happened every time I stayed here when the house would be vacant), light bulbs off, the shower heads in the bathrooms full of calcium, mismatched cutlery, and most importantly: a very valuable painting missing. The way they handled the missing paint? "Oh, you have to file a claim with your insurance company". They tossed the ball to the Home Depot guys who came to replace the carpets for wood flooring. I found completely unprofessional how they handle bigger issues. NOW, if you are a looking for a furnished house to rent, I would suggest you to go elsewhere. When I moved back, I had to rent a property for 3 weeks while I waited for the last tenants in my house to leave. Well, I think 3 makes a trend. I rented two different properties (and I say 3 because I would include mine as well if I were to rent it) and the first house was a shack in PG that looked nice in pictures but it was disgusting in real life. First off, there was a stench of cat's litter mixed with feet, mold, and B.O. that was unbearable, there was a rug in the kitchen that probably belonged to the hobo on the street it, the beds were smelly, walls w/spiders and spider webs, the backyard depressing, etc. We only stayed one night there and asked to be moved to a different property. The second property was a condo in Pebble Beach that I wish I could post the pictures of the stains in the carpet and the amount of lint there was in the drier. The towels and linens smelled also of B.O. and there were marks as if someone had used them and put them back in the closet. Simply put, not pleasant. I could go on and on, but I fired them already. I tried to work things out with Jan, the owner, about six months ago. I sent an email to Jan because she thought I was being "too difficult" and wanted to drop my account. I could not afford to drop my account just like that since I was not in the US yet and needed to have my house rented. My rental specialist was really nice, and she did a good job initially but I think she had too many things on her plate lately. We came to an agreement, but finding the doors of my house wide open, and the missing paint was the last straw that broke the camel's back. I would not recommend this company, but I hope they do improve the quality of their services and their rental homes because I do not wish them bad, after all, we had a 6-year relationship. They could do a good job if only they had less houses to manage in their inventory or more agents being on top of things. Until that is not accomplished, look elsewhere. read more
