We just moved Alexandra on 1 June this year. We were looking for a good pizza place and our new neighbors told us go to Monterey. So we ordered a pizza from Monterey and my word. I was completely surprised by the pizza at Monterey's. They don't have a fancy crust, but everything else makes up for it. They are generous with cheese (super important), and the organic tomato sauce is fresh and flavorful. While the veggie and chicken bbq pizzas were good, the four cheese pizza was the clear winner. So I was driving back from an appointment and came across this place here. I'm pretty glad I decided to stop it's not big and located behind McDonald's. Everything is made to order nothing sitting etc... They do have beer available as well as canned soda or fountain. TVs are situated in the back as well as the front. The prices are decent with a small plain pizza at 9.49, x large plain 15.49 and GF pizza 10" 11.49 salads costing from 7.49 to 11.99 with that one being their Montereys chicken salad. It very clean inside and has an industrial look which I love!Booths and tables are available with outdoor seating too! If you are in the area it's a really good place to stop by and try out. Literally a joke. We had the worst experience just trying to get pizza. We ordered 2 times because they kept getting our order wrong when it was just a simple pepperoni pizza. They kept putting a bunch of other toppings on it when we simply asked for just pepperoni. They also charged us the second time as well for asking for a pizza that they had messed up. I've been enjoying pizza from Monterey's since 2008 and I'm pretty sure I've hooked a number of friends on their pizza as well. Delicious pizza, crust is tasty and not too heavy and the flavor of their ingredients is on point. Pizza prep is super fast but I've never used a 3rd party delivery service so I can't speak to that. Recommend you try the Hawaiian. Had I read the description the first time ordering I never would have ordered it (mandarin oranges and coconut!?! Huh?). A blessing in disguise because it's the most delicious pizza I've ever thrown down the hatch. Oh, and the service seems rough along the edges but these guys are dedicated to making your order and pizza perfect!! read more

The pizza was decent. Unfortunately, I was annoyed by the size of the slices and crust to toppings ratio for the medium. I've never seen such small pieces of pizza for a medium. Maybe it's unfair to compare them to the larger chains however, when I pay close $30 (without tip) for medium pizzas, I expect larger slices then what I received. This was a smedium, a small disguised as a medium. I would hate to see what a small looks like?!? In addition, The King Henry Street has WHOLE roasted garlic cloves on it. There were so many pieces of it, I thought it was chicken. I mean two or three cloves on one baby slice was overkill. Roasted or not, I wasn't happy about it. When we moved to Alexandria three years ago we sampled a lot of pizza places in the vicinity. There are some good ones that do not deliver, but are great for seated dining. For delivery we finally settled on Monterey's based on the unique combination of quality and speed of delivery. When the pizza shows up it really ought to be (at a minimum) warm. Monterey's always showed up well above that temperature. And it was (and for the most part, when it's warm/hot, still is) good pizza. Then they moved to their new location (which apparently allows for seated dining) and things went downhill really fast. The delivery went from 15-20 minutes to 30 minutes at the minimum. Not terrible, but it was obvious that the move caused some changes that I was willing to let them work through. But at least when the pizza was delivered there was no problem with the product - it was usually hot and was still pretty good. Then started the problems with online ordering - twice they have "lost" my online order over the past four months (which means that a phone call has to be placed after waiting an hour only to discover that dinner is going to be exceptionally late tonight). The owner always delivered a pizza to us free of charge, but that still meant that it was going to be a late night. But things have only gotten worse . The last three orders we have placed (via telephone - I no longer trust their online ordering) were delivered to us after 50, 60 and last night 85 minutes. Apparently they are delivering a lot of orders all at once and we must be the proverbial "last stop" on their delivery route because the pizzas have been warm at best. Last night was the worst... a nearly cold pizza, and the delivery driver did not have a credit card slip for me to sign so he got no tip because we had no cash in the house. An hour is a long time to wait for a pizza but when it's nearly an hour and a half and you have to warm it up before you can eat it - that's totally unacceptable. So, things either have to improve at Monterey's or we are going to have to seek out a new pizza delivery spot. Believe me, I did not enjoy writing this review. read more

Had a great initial experience with Monterey's. In the mood for pizza, and given their close proximity to us, we decided to give them a go with each of us ordering a personal pan pizza. I opted for the buffalo chicken and she got a four cheese concoction. The personal pan buffalo chicken pizza was the deep dish variety with great quality toppings. Great amount of chicken, hot sauce and cheese. Everything in balance and piping hot upon delivery. There were a lot more pizza topping options than expected so I took longer than usual to order which clearly annoyed the staff and set the tone for the meal. The pizza ended up being decent- not bad but not the best I've had. The crust was nice and crispy, but I felt like some salt or additional flavor was missing from the sausage/toppings. When ordering tonight I came across a note I had penned myself about a credit for an order that did not meet expectations for timeliness or quality IN JAN 2010! The boss at the time, Eliseo, offered me a credit for a pie in the future. We have had many pizzas since but tonight I came across the note attached to an old menu. I called and ordered a large Ms. Buzio pizza (always a favorite!) for us. I mentioned the note and the credit to the guy on the other end of the phone. He had no entry in the computer that reflected the commitment and I said, "OK, no sweat, I'll pay" and then he said "But, I am Eliseo and if I said you had a pizza pie coming, well then you do, no questions asked!" Last night the pizza was delivered without following instructions written in the Grubhub order...tonight I called in advance to confirm no sauce and they agreed. I placed the order through grubhub and the restaurant called to cancel the order saying I live outside of their grubhub service delivery area. So lessoned learn, go pick up your pizza or eat there if it provides dine-in. While the ingredients are fresh and the crust is good. I ordered a large thin-crust pizza with pepperoni and extra cheese for delivery to our hotel. The online ordering service was easy as pie, and I quickly got an email with expected delivery time. The delivery guy brought our pizza in a reasonable amount of time, but didn't bring any napkins, which seems like a no-brainer when delivering to a hotel. No red pepper or parmesan either. I would have happily overlooked both of these if the pizza were great, but it wasn't. Their idea of "thin-crust" is not the crispy cracker-like crust you might find elsewhere, but closer to a chewy hand-tossed crust that didn't taste very fresh. Their idea of "extra cheese" would pretty much be normal cheese at other pizza places. The pizza was warm but not hot. The slices weren't cut all the way through - an inconvenience when you're staying at a hotel without utensils to help finish the job. It was the smallest, lightest "large" pizza I have ever ordered anywhere - so if you're hungry err on the side of a bigger pizza. Overall, it was OK but I'd try somewhere else next time. read more
