I used to go to this location when it was Raymond's BBQ many years ago. Then it turned into Chinese/BBQ, a combination that lost me so I stopped even paying attention to this restaurant even though it is in Lake Highlands where we live. Today, after doing my patriotic duty and voting in the primary (me and 10% of other Texans), I decided to give Monterrey a chance since it is literally across the street from the voting station and I am always up for Mexican food. I did not know what to expect since the reviews have quite a bit of variance. The outside is sort of run down and not very attractive. I was wondering whether the run down impression would be reflected in not very good food, or if this is the classic hole in the wall that looks unattractive but has great food. So, entering the restaurant, I was not sure what I would get. My initial reaction was: this place looks authentic, like I had just stepped into a Mexican restaurant in Mexico. I took a seat and was immediately greeted by my waitress. She brought chips and salsas, red and green. The chips were not warm but they were crispy and not greasy. I tried the red salsa first and thought, "oh oh, this tastes like it is from a jar." But then I tried the salsa verde (green) and was blown away. Served warm, it has deep, rich flavor. Seeds are still visible. The salsa is not overtly hot but has a slow burn that builds. It was absolutely delicious. As Guy Fieri would say, you could put that on a shoe and it would be good. I asked if it was homemade and was told it was. They should bottle it and sell it retail, it is that good. They only have a couple of lunch specials so ordered from the regular menu. I opted for the taco plate with fajita chicken (3 tacos for $14.95), which comes with charro beans and rice. The tacos were excellent! The chicken was very well seasoned. It was cooked on a flat top and had a nice char which imparted a smoky flavor in every bite. I added the salsa verde, cilantro, and onions and I was off to the races. The charro beans were also excellent and had a deep flavor. I did not care for the pieces of hot dog but the rest of it was nothing short of phenomenal. Incredibly flavorful and throughly enjoyable. The rice was light and fluffy and also had good flavor. Everything was simply excellent. I kept saying to myself: "damn, this food is good!" Next time, I will come when I don't have to work in the afternoon and will try some of their margaritas. I now have the answer to the question: this is a hole in the wall that has excellent food. read more

This place is advertised as authentic Mexican food. I asked for red enchiladas with cheese. I got two Tex-Mex cheese enchiladas (regular corn tortilla) with red sauce and melted cheese. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in late October, my son drove me to this quaint place in Garland. Although it was past lunchtime, the place was pretty full and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Even the servers seemed happy. I hadn't had Tex-Mex in months, so I ordered my fave - chili relleno. Everyone makes it a little different so I wasn't sure what to expect. The cheese wasn't the same as I normally get, but this version was very good. The dining area is casual and although there are many tvs, the sound is off, so you're not trying to talk over them while you eat. Our server was very good - she approached us immediately after we sat down, greeted us with a smile and paid attention to our orders. There were many servers, which means - you never have to wait long! The chips and salsa was SO good, we took a few home. Chips are made fresh and still warm. I loved that they weren't drowned in salt, just lightly salted. I'd love to go back to this place some evening, I'll bet it comes alive! The service and food quality has gone downhill and fast. Way too many servers idling by and also giving an attitude when serving. I used to love this place but during my recent visit the waiter said that I should go looking for him if I wanted anything. He didn't refill drinks even though he saw we had nothing to drink. The food wasn't seasoned and tasted bland. I'm disappointed and never coming here again. I did let the manager know and he said he was sorry but didn't say anything else. read more

First time here good and fast service. The food was good the homemade tortillas were delicious and the hot hot sauce that comes with the chips was delicious the spicy level was on point. The menudo was really good but a little too greasy. The pechuga de pollo a la parrilla has a great taste it was a little on the dry side . I am real big on rice and this one had a good taste but could have been better. The margarita was okay could have been a little stronger. I found this place on TikTok and was pleasantly surprised! The food is as close to authentic Mexican as you can get in this part of Dallas. All food was made fresh and the tortillas were fresh. I had Menudo which was Pretty Basic but delicious. We also had carne rojo en salsa roja it was delicious. We also ordered rajas con queso and that was really good as well. The chorizo beans were outstanding. And the best part of all was the homemade café con canela ! Lastly the Service was top tier. The server came by often as did the owner to make sure we had everything we needed. We got all that food for 50 bucks. Highly recommend and we'll go back! read more

I'm not sure if the server was new or overwhelmed but we waited 1/2 hour for our drinks. The frozen margaritas were half melted. When the entrees arrived 2 were lukewarm. Roughly $35 for my entree and drink including tip. Not worth it. We didn't even get a chip refill, lol. They have a DJ on Friday and he started playing about 7:30 and it was too loud IMO. If you were going to drink and dance, it would have been perfect. The music selection was good. We arrived between 6:30-7 and the restaurant was busy with people of all ages and children. First time coming here and as soon as we walked in, there was a strong sewer smell. We had already ordered so, we put up with the smell throughout our breakfast. We informed the waiter who then notified his manager or owner. The female stopped by our table and we notified her that the smell was unpleasant and that it might be the sewer line that needs to be cleaned out. At first, she acknowledged that the restroom had a problem and then said she didn't smell anything and that it was probably us who brought that smell in. Unprofessional and unwilling to accept our experience as an opportunity for improvement. We visit many local places in Garland and we've never experienced this attitude before. We went to this restaurant for our Valentine's Day dinner however I must say it was very disappointing as we waited over 20 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge her existence we were the only gringos in the entire restaurant I do believe it was a case of reverse discrimination, as much as I hate to admit that! It wasn't elbow to elbow just, or with a wait so we saw no reason for the lack of service! It was as the other waiters walked miles to avoid us we attempted many times to call someone over and make eye contact for 20+ minutes, to no avail. It took my fiancé actually summoning the manager of the establishment to receive some service. Once our order was taken, it took quite some time for it to come back to the table. Once it arrived it was much to our dissatisfaction, COLD and DRY for Enceladus. We ate it, only because we were starving! I came here with a large party. It was about 24 of us. Seven of us and a toddler arrived 25 minutes late. The late-comers did not get chips and salsa. They took our drink order but I had to keep waving at the young guy with the chips and salsa platter over to get us chips and salsa because our waiter would not stick around long enough to get her attention. After 20 minutes, I was able to get us chips but no salsa. The guy dropped off the chips and rushed off. After our food arrived, I couldn't get them to refill our drinks either. They would deliver our food and rush off. I ordered the street tacos. I was disappointed in the small amount of meat in my tacos. We had to ask for silverware as well for all the late comers. You have to physically get the servers attention for ANYTHING AROUND HERE! Not once did they ask if we needed anything. They just rush off. I can't speak for the other people in our group because they were sitting at the other end of our table. When the check came, I noticed they added an 18% gratuity. The Tortilla soup was bland, had no flavor, watered down then it was served without any Tortilla chips, why the heck does anyone serve Tortilla soup without Tortilla? Well they did. Then there is the issue of the Taco prices , it says tacos for 1.50 with language being 2 something then I was charged 2.75 per tripa Taco when the menu clearly has the meat type of tripa on the regular Taco meat. This restaurant isn't bad, but it's not fantastic either. They have cool decor and a nice ambiance. I love the colorful chairs and papel picado banners. I also love that they play Mexican music! Now, to the food... You get complimentary chips and salsa as an appetizer. The chips were made with yellow corn tortillas instead of white corn tortillas, so they tasted a little different than what I'm used to. They needed salt because they did not have any. The salsa was not spicy. I was with two other people and we only got one little bowl of salsa to share! For my main course, I had an enchilada plate with two cheese enchiladas and rice and beans. The rice and beans were really good, seasoned well. My enchiladas tasted good too, but they didn't have enough cheese inside! It felt like I was just eating corn tortillas with chili con carne on top. HOWEVER, I can tell you that the enchiladas would have been great if they had enough cheese. Everything else about them was on point. Something that I also enjoyed about this place is that the portions are big, but not ginormous like most places. There were no leftovers to take home. Keep in mind that my review only speaks for the Mexican food at the restaurant (not the BBQ), but I think this place has the potential to be a four-star worthy restaurant if they tweaked a few things. No lie it was really packed wait time was supposed to be 30min the time was 12:30 after 45 min we got seated got our drink order then 10- min later waitress came back and took our order. by these time it was 1:40 and we still haven't got our food at 2:40 and we are still waiting for our food and 6 -7other tables before us got their food and we are still waiting. First, let me say that the staff was very friendly. The place was DEAD when we dropped in for some to-go food. Reminded me a lot of visiting Raymond's when the previous owner's had it. The good news is, they do Texas food very well. I cannot speak to anyone of the Mexican food because we did not have any. We ordered a pound of beef and 1/2 pound of ribs, which, combined, cost is about $25. They have among the BEST, MOST FLAVORFUL beef brisket we had in the DFW. It is one of the few places in east Dallas that can say they have SMOKED beef. But that is about as far as the praise goes. The beef, while tasty, was VERY FATTY--so much so that we threw nearly 1/3 of it away. I paid about $18 for the beef, and I lost about 1/3 of it too waste. It is too expensive for what they are offering. I would give flavor a 4 or 4.5/5, but cost and fat brings us down to 3/5. The ribs were an entirely different story. I paid $7.50 for four tiny--and I mean tiny--ribs. The order was smaller than most appetizers at similar price points at a restaurant. The price would not have been a huge issue if the ribs were good, but they were terrible. They tasted like rib jerky: hard, dry, and very chewy. They get 1/5 for these travesties. We visited the original Raymond twice before deciding that they simply were not worth the visit, even though we live two blocks away. This place shows some promise, but if they want the place to be full rather than as dead as it was, they need to get the food and prices in order. No "family packs"? Specials? They fit $25 worth of food into half a to-go container. Dickies down the road destroys this place when it comes to price point and value. Finally, giving people "Texas toast" with the meal is an affront, not a deal. I would rather have a 1/2 pint or pint of food rather than terribly buttery and empty carbs. I received 6 pieces of bread with the two meats, and I are a bite of one: tastes like thick, fatty bread. Pass. I have posted pictures so you could see exactly what I purchased. We might try this place one more time. The beef was good, albeit very fat (and expensive). Another experience like one we had today and we will leave it and never return, just like we did when it was Raymond's. 2/5 overall. I am only basing my review on the barbecue portion of the menu not the Mexican. I went on a Sunday and ordered the special, half a chicken barbecue with two sides and two slices of toast. The chicken was delicious especially the rub that was used on the skin. The sides are a different story. The mashed potatoes were alright, a little watery and the coleslaw had to much dressing or mayo ( whatever is used to make it). But the chicken was great. The beef stew was decent of course I am biased since I always compare them to my moms stew and till this day no restaurant has come close. I highly recommend this restaurant. Food is pretty good. I ordered through grub hub and this is the second time a meal was missing from our order. Apparently the driver forgot a bag. I just caution when using a third party delivery service. There needs to be better communication between the restaurant and the drivers. The first time it happened it was just an appetizer, but this time it was an entire entree. We called the restaurant and an employee was kind enough to bring it to us. Stopped by during lunch and this place is authentic as they come. I ordered the tostada Siberia, it can be a little messy but worth it. I noticed they advertise different events/theme nights throughout the week, so I'll definitely stop by on one of those nights. Would definitely recommend! read more
