I was surprisingly impressed with the food here. Expecting mediocre bar food on the PB garnet drag, I was surprised to be presented with some very nicely executed tacos using high quality ingredients and a good sized portion for the price. 2 tacos was plenty filling for me, who came with a pretty big appetite (though I wouldnt call myself a veracious eater). HIGHLY recommend the Chili Verde taco - slow braised pork, crema, oxaca & queso fresco, onion, cilantro, radish, chicharron on a flour tortilla. Typically I stray from flour tortilla items as I personally prefer corn... but I couldnt pass up some slow braised pork! Glad i didnt, as this was definitely my fav between the two I got. Al Pastor - with Avocado-tomatillo salsa, grilled pineapple pico. Ya know, I have never been disappointed by Al Pastor and it usually always is the favorite of my taco selection, but their take on it was just not what I expected nor desired. It was coated in a thick layer of sauce that was insanely too heavy and sweet... Al pastor should shine on its own! Oh well, so it goes. I wouldnt get that again. It was still satisfying, though. Got to have a bite of someone's bacon and shrimp Machete quasadilla before my food arrived, and it was also good. Obviously this extra long quesadilla is a unique offering and a great shated app between several people. I don't find myself in this area much, and you especially don't typically find me in a country environment...but it was enjoyable and they have oodles of bar games all over in the part indoors, part covered patio bar & restaurant. Moonshine is one of my absolute favorite bars. I work right across the street and often times come here afterwards. The management is beyond friendly and the security is wonderful at keeping everyone in line. There's a lot of bars in PB that have a similar club/ late night vibe but moonshine outshines them all! They have a huge indoor area with two sections as well as karaoke on Saturday's. To further compliment they also have a huge outside lawn area as well. One of my friend's couldn't finish their carnita's rolled tacos, so they gave me half of their's. It was really fresh and crunchy! I also tried a few other items from an event that night. I had the machete (an extra long quesadilla), Cj dog, and a carnita's torta. Everything was a sample size (I think), so they were pretty cute looking tasted okay. I also tried something alcoholic, but didn't like it too much haha... We were actually next door at Moonshine Beach next door, so if you go there, you can order food from here. This new Mexican eatery with a bar and grill is in the old Fred's locations and is pumping out some quite the appetizing eats. I enjoyed two regular size tacos, not the mini size street tacos, not that there is anything wrong with that. However, you certainly get more bang for your buck with the larger size. I ordered the smoked carnitas taco for $4, the grilled Mahi Mahi fish taco for $4.50, and a heaping bowl of crispy corn tortilla chips along with some house made salad for $2. I first dug into the fish taco. The taco came with a good size portion of well grilled mahi mahi. The fish was succulent and came with a light but reasonable about of seasoning. I like that they allowed the fish's flavor to speak for itself. The tacos came with fresh cabbage and pico de gallo. The light crema that accompanied the taco as perfect. The put a lot on the taco, but its flavor was light and quite tasty. I thought it was a very good grilled fish taco. The cubed smoked carnitas in the second taco were bliss because the meat readily picked up the white oak smoky flavor, the wood of choice here. The carnitas were tender, had a great pork flavor, but most importantly tasted, as if someone knew how to properly smoke some meats here. The taco was simple, but also came with a nice pile of freshly prepared guacamole, that screamed pure avocado. I liked it simplicity, in its preparation, which was old school, yet effective. The taco came with a small splattering of chopped cilantro and onions. There was just enough to help the taco but not overwhelm it. The smoked carnitas were the king in this taco, in my opion. Next time, I plan to get some piled high on some nachos! With all the good, comes a little constructive criticism. For example, they need to make sure to get the food from the pass, to the table quicker, because my tortillas on both tacos had lost their warmth, by the time they reached me. Also, although the salsa was good, I would ease up on the cumin, so that there is no confusion between a Tex-Mex eatery and a Mexican eatery. Oh yes, more carnitas in the taco would be just grand. Let's not be stingy with the good stuff! Service was pretty good. The floor waitress was sweet and the bartender friendly enough. The place has ample room inside and out, and they offer a dog friendly patio until 7:00 PM. read more

On St. Pattys day three of my friends and I waited in line for 45 minutes at this place only to be refused entrance because we had a couple shooters of fireball in our bag. This was not a problem for the two other bars we had been to beforehand but this restaurant took it very seriously, literally forming a blockade of security guards against my friends and me. We were just a few college girls trying to get into a bar on St. Pattys day of course we have a couple shots of alcohol togo. First time here & there is lots to do! The crowd is all over the board but mostly 20-30s the night I came. We had drinks, played Jenga, karaoke and used those great Lime scooters to get here. DISCLAIMER: If you are disabled, do not come to this establishment. I was standing in an less crowded area to keep safe and apparently their staff members find it appropriate to carry two 24 packs of alcohol on his shoulders as he mangled his way through the crowd and slammed into me causing me to fall into a group of people. No apology or sympathy, just kept walking doing his business. I asked for security for his name and was told no. I let her know that I was disabled and that man ran into me with cases of beer and I fell and hurt my back. Her response was "And?" This world.... I spoke to a manager but I doubt anything will come from this. If you're hurt and try to stay safe and do something normal for one night of your miserable life. I could have sworn that I wrote a review when this place first opened after it used to be Fred's, but my review is gone. I remember I gave three stars mainly because of the food. The tacos were ok, but they were expensive at $10 for 3 tacos. That may sound cheap, but there's cheaper options within PB with more flavor. I do miss the free salsa and chips bar when this place used to be Fred's. This place is attached to Moonshine Beach, so what goes on in one establishment applies to the other. Case in point: there was a onesie pub crawl on Saturday night. Although the pub crawl specials were in the back of Moonshine, people were still coming over to the Cerveza Jack's bar to get drinks. I will say that the drinks are cheap. My vodka sunrises were $6.50, which weren't bad at all. Five stars goes to Sam for being an awesome bartender. Even when he was slammed, he'd always check on us to ensure we were ok. Hopefully I will be back next year! read more

Ever since this place opened up I have been coming here for happy hour. I think it has some of the better deals in the area. 2-1 Caronas, 1/2 off appetizers? You can't really beat that. I also come here for taco Tuesday's where they have some good deals on their street tacos. If I am going for apps I will usually stick to the buffalo wings and homemade guacamole. Both are tasty choices especially for 1/2 off price. If I am going tacos I get 1 carne asada,1 carnitas, and 1 pollo. They are yummy and a good deal for the price. I have always received good service here until last week. I wanted to put the hockey game on so I asked the bartender, it was a young man, and he told me that it "wasn't his job but he would ask someone for me". Who says that?? Just say "yes, I'll take care of that" and go get the person who can do it. I don't want to hear that it's not your job! I'm taking off a star just for that comment the bartender made. read more

My friend and I didn't want to cook so we were looking for a place to eat with our five kids in tow (ages 5-9). It was Tuesday at 5:30 and there was plenty of room, so we opted for a table in the corner. They had a giant Connect Four game, that kept the kids occupied till the food came. They also had a giant Jenga, but we didn't play with that at the table. Taco Tuesday special had $2 and $3 options and they had $5 Margarita. Some of the kids wanted the bacon wrapped hot dog that was on the menu and the servers put ketchup, mustard and mayo on the side for each of the kids, which I thought was great. All in all a Tuesday night dinner for five kids, two adults with margaritas the total bill was $40. That was a bargain, the food was great, service was great, and the kids were entertained. read more

Tacos were presented great & service were okay. Here are my critiques: Shrimp & bacon taco was okay, needed the shrimp to be real shrimp, not the little small shrimp. Grilling it would be best altogether. Carnitas taco only needed a wedge of lime and it would have been perfect. Al pastor was great too, the meat was seasoned perfectly too. Only would have been enhanced by grilling the pineapple. The server seemed like she was new or something, she had to come back come back twice to get our order for food & I had to ask her for water a few times as well. My friends and I decided to come here for Taco Tuesday. The place was pretty dead. I ordered the fish taco (both fried & grilled), and my friends got a mix of shrimp, fish & steak. The waitress (a blonde girl) brought out my friends margarita first, and we asked for waters. She came back later with our food, still no waters. We asked again, and I also asked for a side of the crema. She was taking a while, so I started to eat my tacos without the sauce. The tacos themselves were nothing special, they didn't taste that fresh. My friends said the shrimp tacos were the best by far. 10 minutes go by and our waitress still has not come back with waters or the sauce I ordered. We finally had to flag down one of the workers that walked by to ask for our waters and sauce. He immediatly brought waters to our table, and the waitress finally came with the sauce (it made the taco SO much better). It was so slow, I have no idea why the service was so bad... it was probably the worst service I have got in a while. I get some people have bad days, but she could have at least brought waters to our table. The food was mediocre as well, definitely will not be returning. read more

Visited Cerveza Jacks for the first time last night. Great place. Walking in you automatically get the vibe of cool Mexican tequila drinking place. They have a GREAT selection of Mexican beers on tap. They have MODELO lager and negra on TAP! That's amazing an unusual :) and probably the reason we will come back. We tried their al pastor quesadilla per our servers recommendation it was good a big enough to share. The cheese was very stinky it's a combo of manchego and Oaxaca cheese yum! read more

One of San Diego's best karaoke spots! They let me rap whatever I want, I can't complain about this spot at all. :) Cerveza Jack's has been hosting Almost Famous Entertainment's karaoke night on Friday's and Saturday's for a while now, and it's my go-to spot on Saturday nights. Sherilynn is by-far, hands-down the best bartender they have, and I'm always sad when she's put on a different bar! Having her run the karaoke bar is 50% of the reason I come out to CJs! If Cerveza Jack's management is reading this: ALWAYS have Sherliynn working the karaoke bar on Saturdays! She's the reason a lot of regulars, myself included, make the trip out. We go here every Sunday for sunset Trivia. It's usually dead even on trivia nights. The food takes forever to come out but the large quesadilla was decent. Tonight, September 9, I came with my husband and we walked in. We have always been asked for our ID's which is fine but tonight the guy asked me to show him my bag. We've come here 9 weeks and have never been asked so you can imagine me being like why? I opened my bag and we had been out all day so I had some jerky in there... mind you we always buy their food and drinks when playing trivia and we were going to do so again. The guy tells me that I can't bring in my snacks. So I said with displeasure I'll go walk the mile back to my car. He didn't simply allow us in on the condition that we don't eat the jerky. I come back in and he says, you're the same person and welcomes me in and I said do you want to check my bag? And he pushes me back to the gate and tells me are you getting an attitude with me? And I said I'm frustrated that I had to go back to my car which isn't close and... then he tells me that he doesn't accept attitudes with people and if I have an attitude with him I'll have one with everyone. I said, you can't be serious and he said you can't come in. Then he told me that I needed to wait for a manager. The rest of my party just walked out because of this. We won't be back all because their "security" has an ego. Go on feel good about losing customers that spend almost $100+ every Sunday and sometimes during the week. read more

The decor inside the restaurant / bar is very nice we came in a pretty cold night and they had the fire pit going and had the heaters turned on which was a + The tacos are simply amazing the waitress recommended two of the tacos one had pineapple on it and the other one had carne asada the Taco menu is a must try and are to die for it's a perfect complementary to the nice beers that they have on tap here. Machette, bacon and shrimp, don't pass go! This thing is one of the tastiest, largest meals I've ever encountered. It is magnificent! I wouldn't really bother with the bar good there. The happy hour is really good and really great times offered, just go to that at the small bar directly in Cerveza Jacks. In fact, amongst our family we ordered a burrito (which was ridiculous size, inexpensive and amazing taste, the machette (which I still don't even have words for although I've ordered it to be delivered twice since) and taqueria which were smothered in every topping imagineable! read more

Cool spot to play shuffle board. Bartenders are completely inept. I say so with knowledge of how to handle a crowd of 10 plus people but hey not everyone is as cool as me. Note to (terrible) bartenders. When a customer is standing at the bar maybe try taking his drink order instead of chatting it up with your co worker. Also people at the bar ordering drinks tip you much more directly than your cocktail servers. Maybe take an occasional drink order instead of struggling to put rubber ducks in cocktails for the servers. I tip better and my order of two beers two shots is way less complicated. read more

A good place to load up on cheap drinks before heading to another bar or club nearby. Our drink of choice was Patron shots ($7.50 each) and Don Julio shots at $6.50 each. We also had chips (which was warmed and crispy) dipped in their guacamole (best thing ever!) Slow service at the bar area, but our table service was fast enough.
