Okay so this place is near and dear to my heart. It's not the most amazing sushi, but it's great. Their lunch specials are great and I have come here for lunch over a few a dozen times (and dinner a few times). Lunch: Here is what I recommend: Get the 3 item combination. It's a great deal, and a ton of food. (1) The Chicken Teriyaki (make sure to ask for breast) is always on point and comes with white rice. They are so consistent making this and I love it. (2) Get the 2 piece sashimi, I recommend the yellowfin as it is stellar. (3) Honey Moon roll is a classic and they do a really good job of it. With any order, they will bring you chicken broth with scallions and it's so delicious. In terms of service, they are the nicest people you'll ever meet. The owner is usually there (Japanese guy with a pug as pictured next to the wall), and they will alway ensure that you are happy and well taken care of. I've had a number of lunch birthday parties in the back patio as well and they've always gone above and beyond the accommodate our party with excellent service. The dinner is great as well, but I would probably recommend just doing lunch here. The Rolls are very decent and quite generous in size. I tend to get the Hadaka chicken Salad for dinner as it's very light and delicious with the dressing on the side, but again,t I'm more of a lunch guy for Moshi Moshi. The prices tend to be a little higher and it may not be the best place. I give it a 5 star for lunch and a 3.5 star for dinner. Have you ever been so caught up in conversation and had the waitress order for you? For the first time that happened to me at Moshi Moshi. My aunt was visiting from France and she is a hoot. The waitress was more than awesome and recommended delicious drinks and rolls, which I don't remember the name of and looked them up retrospectively. We had sake nage(and scallion roll), geisha roll, sauteed noodles, and tempure plates. Everything was delicious. Parking was easy near Portrero Hill. We waited a bit for seats despite making a reservation. That was no problem at all. They had bar seating and we ordered drinks. I've been to this place numerous times. I live just down the block. Alas, this place is very hit-or-miss. Sometimes the food is wonderful and the service attentive and friendly, even jovial. Other times, the food is cold or the fish is of poor quality or the deep-fried food is just way too greasy or salty. But the biggest issue is the service. The service, especially on a Friday night, can be incredibly slow. Ten minutes to be seated. Twenty minutes before they bring water. Forty minutes between the salad and the main course. My guess is they take way too many phone orders and they haven't got enough preparers to take care of the dine-in customers in a timely manner. And the wait staff. Sometimes they are talkative, friendly and jovial. Other times, I'm treated as if I look like Ted Kaczynski and fart like Rudy Giuliani. They are very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This place is literally right outside my apartment. I love going here when I am craving sushi on a splurge or just want to get out and have some time to myself. This place is small, but it has a lot of cool things going for it. One thing I noticed right off the bat is the owner. At least I'm pretty sure he was the owner. Super nice, warm, welcoming, and was super jolly. He always looks after each customer and man do I HAVE MAD RESPECT FOR THOSE PEOPLE. The food here is awesome too and surprisingly the sushi itself is top notch. I'm not talking about the rolls so if you want rolls, perhaps another restaurant is best suited for you. If you get the rolls, I guarantee you will just say meh. But for the sashimi...it's got all the works going for it. They even have a bar inside if you are interested, but I don't usually drink. Me and my friend ordered 5 rolls and we finished the suckers. We are girls but we sure can eat and are DAMN proud of it! My favorite sushi was this one that had lemon slices on top. It was genius. The lemon really gave a sour kick to the sushi which made it unique and super tasty. An overrated and overpriced lunch stop that only happened because it's right down the street from where I was working. My coworkers and I came here for a late lunch because we all wanted Japanese food, but didn't want to stray too far from our office. Service: During this time, the waiters seemed to be more worried with making sure people were getting drinks and not actually food. Although the person who took our order was prompt and responsive, the person who brought out our food did not know where any of the plates went, and could not even describe any of the rolls (even though we all ordered very standard ones). We asked in advance to split our bill, but when it came time to pay, we had to ask again. Space: If you're playing country music in a Japanese restaurant, you're doing it wrong. Food: I ordered a basic salmon and scallion roll, not expecting much, and I wasn't disappointed. It was just as mediocre as I expected it to be: boring salmon, mushy rice, and just overall messy. I find it laughable that they charge you for extra wasabi and soy sauce when the food itself isn't that great to begin with. My coworker seemed to enjoy the onion croquette, but its paste-like consistency didn't really appeal to me. The rice on everyone's sushi just seemed old and unappealing. Moshi Moshi was referred by my friend's colleague and we found ourselves here as our choice for dinner before some serious salsa dancing at the nearby Cafe Cocomo. It's a Saturday night around 6:30 pm and it's not too busy. Deciding between the Moshi Moshi Combination Dinner ($15.95 for a bento box w/ three choices AND a side of gyoza, a tekka roll, or CA roll) or the Bento Box Combination ($11.95 for a bento box with two choices), I decided on the latter. I'm a sucker for the tempura and sashimi combo. The tempura came with two shrimp and about four to five pieces of vegetables. The batter was a bit thicker than what I would prefer, but tasty still. And the sashimi consisted of large pieces of tuna and white tuna, two each. The fish was okay. Not exactly the best quality as determined when I bit into one piece only to have it not break off at all. (This is where you have to just open your mouth and stick the whole piece of fish into your mouth since it won't break.) The bento box came with rice, salad, soup and ice cream. I think the prices for the bento boxes are a good bet. My other dining companions also got the Bento Box -Chicken Teriyaki and Gyoza for one, and Tonkatsu and Gyoza for the other. We also had diners that tried out the hamachi sashimi (she was not impressed and had leftover pieces), the Caterpillar roll, the Sake nigiri (smoked salmon, not fresh), and a few other sushi rolls too. One of my dining companions also ordered Edamame and was disappointed that it came out cold. She asked if they could heat it up for her, and they did. Overall, I gave this restaurant a three star because of the prices of the bento boxes and some of the rolls didn't seem as expensive either. However, I wasn't impressed with the sashimi I had and wouldn't return for sushi, just Japanese food only. They also had a small bar with beer on tap and outdoor seating which means this place may liven up when there's a game on. The owner did come out and say hello as well and the service was decent. We were really disappointed with our experience here! We came here on a Friday evening with a party of ten. The waitress, Marie M, was not very inviting. As the night progressed, we were continuously shocked by how rude she was. One person in our party ordered the udon. It came out as a sauteed noodle dish, instead of the udon soup she thought it was. Well, we kindly asked Marie M. whether we could switch it, and she was very unhappy about the whole situation. Instead of being polite and nice, she argued back telling us thats why she had confirmed the dish when we ordered it. She refused to take it back, and came to the solution of getting us some miso broth to pour on top of the noodles. ARE YOU SERIOUS? How can you take a non-soup dish, and just pour miso soup on top of it? The situation was handled so unprofessionally! When it was time to pay our bill, we wanted it split. She wasn't very happy about splitting the bill three ways. She grabbed the split bills and said she had to add on the mandatory 20% gratuity and disappeared. When she returned a while later, she was still treating us in a very rude way, and asked if we wanted to talk to her manager. Why would we want to speak to the manager if she had treated us right? After this long process, we decided we didn't want to spend much more time here and left. Our experience was the first and last. She hardly deserved the 20% gratuity we were forced to pay. The rolls are pricey for the area but around the same price as other sushi restaurants. That being said, these rolls are way bigger and have a lot more fish on them. They had 1, 2 or 3 item combo plus other apps and dishes. Had the $10.5 for 2 item combo that included "hand-carved rib-eye beef" which tasted dry and without flavor, rubbery/leathery and frozen. And this item was an $1 extra. The unagi with avocado and tobiko was with more unagi sauce, tobiko and rice but not a lot of fish nor avocado. The side salad was good and the rice was okay. The food definitely looked more pleasing than its taste. Surprisingly the place got quite busy and almost no seat available around noon. I can't be quite sure it was the quality of food but it might very well be because there aren't many choices in this proximity and Japanese cuisine. This place has been around for ages. That's what I'm told--I have family that used to work across the street, and pop in for lunch all of the time. It's been the better part of a decade since that was the case, but when we were out exploring the area for old times' sake, we decided to stop in here for the memories. Not much has changed, I'm told. But from what I could see, that's not really a bad thing. It's not shabby inside, but it's not totally chic. It's Japanese food, but it's not blatantly Japanese. It's deceptively authentic; you get some really interesting things, some menu items that are a bit more common, and it's all in an atmosphere that says "lunch" louder than it does "Japan". The lunches, after all, are where they shine. Should you be lucky enough to find parking in the part of town in the middle of the day (you're fighting with large buildings that have no parking, and the streets are crammed, wheel to wheel), you'll be in for a nice, efficient meal. Plus, full bar if you want one of those loooonger, Friday kind of lunches. Combos are the name of the game. There are a few sushi combos, and they're pretty up front in the menu, labeling one section as Maki and the other as Americanized. Their words. So if you want a reliable sushi spot, then go right ahead. My money, however, went towards the big box on the middle of the menu, with grill combos. Choose a one, two, or three-item combo plate for 10.95, 14.95, or 18.95 respectively. You have three sections to choose from: grilled (think chicken or beef teriyaki), deep fried (think tempura) and sushi (with rolls or sashimi upgrade available). Mix and match, and they come with salad, rice, and miso. The miso is served in a cup for sipping, and I rather like that. Plus, the miso wasn't a salt bomb as they can be, but rather a nice, tender thing with shaved carrot and green onion. I could have sipped on a few of them. The salad is straightforward, and for the combo I got a seared tuna and beef teriyaki. The beef was cooked until just pink and it was fantastic. Tender, seasoned well, and not drowned in teriyaki sauce. The tuna was lightly seared, and though thin, still maintained its pink, cool center except on the thinned edges. I was satisfied with the portions, and happy with my choice. Next time I would probably explore the soups (choose either soba or udon noodles). I'm not a huge devotee of donburi, but I don't know that I've had a great sampling, so perhaps this is worth a shot. Since I haven't had dinner, I'm left to imagine if they're still as bumping and focused, or if it becomes a much more neighborhoody kind of affair, at a more relaxed pace. Dunno. read more

I'm so glad I found this place! I would actually rate them 4.5 stars but I think it's worthy enough to round up to 5. A friend and I came here for an early dinner on a Friday night and luckily we made a reservation because it started to get pretty busy! I highly recommend making a reservation especially on the weekends. We sat on the backyard garden patio and it was so nice! Definitely try to sit out there if you want a dinner with that aesthetic ambiance as well. For the sushi, we ordered the chef's choice sashimi, the rainbow spider roll, the haleakala roll, and the sun dragon roll! All the food was presented very nicely and pleasing to the eye. Everything tasted super fresh and high quality, especially the sashimi! It came with 6 different types of fish and all the pieces were pretty thick so you for sure get your money's worth! My favorite roll of the 3 would have to be the haleakala roll b/c it tasted so unique - I've never had a roll like it before! It's an avo-cumber roll topped with a lightly torched albacore and a chili oil on top. At first, it looked like it was gonna be spicy, but it wasn't too bad! The chili oil on top gives it a different flavor since it typically isn't paired with sushi and the torched albacore on top also gives it that hint of smokiness. Overall, I would 100% come back to this place and I love that it's in a part of sf that's not super busy! The chilled Zaru soba called my name on a warm SF day, as well as, the seared ahi tuna salad (DERICIOUS). The fish is fresh and I've enjoyed their sushi and sashimi without fear. The complimentary broth to start the meal makes my Hapa-nese soul smile. The calpico drink brings back my childhood memories. The price is moderate, the service is efficient and polite. We decided to go to the International Auto Show, then saw Transporter 3 and then hit Moshi Moshi. This was obviously a day designed for my husband. Because of the $25 Restaurant.com gift certificate that I purchased for $3, I felt inclined to order some appetizers. We shared Edamame, Korokke (kinda like McDonald's hashbrowns--in a good way) and the Tempura Taster. All yum. For rolls, I had the Spider and the hubby had the Golden Gate and the Philly. He is more of a sushi lover than I am and he was very pleased. The service was efficient but could have been friendlier. The bathrooms were super cute (they offered Method soap and even had lotion!). Consistently good. I was a bit wary at first, because it doesn't come off as a truly "authentic" Japanese restaurant (ok, ok...I'll admit, because of the overtly non-Asian staff,) but look more closely... I've lived in Japan and have to say the selections here are absolutely delicious and authentic. There's always a list of specials that add to the already wide selection of dishes to choose from. The 2 and 3 item combo are SO good; they offer a slew of options, and even what you'd think are 'basic' choices are really excellently-executed: katsu (chicken or tonkatsu) and tempura are perfectly fried, and teriyaki selections utilize choice cuts of chicken and beef, grilled to perfection. Bonus: the portions are generous. I have quickly become a regular, be it dine in (great/friendly service, always!) or take out (host/hostess is always efficient and friendly as well). I've converted multiple friends into regulars here as well, and they rave about the fish, the uni, the rolls. I also love that it's on this unassuming corner in the Dogpatch. Definitely a neighborhood gem. Never packed, but we're starting to see traffic pick up on the weekends. Rightly so. P.S. I'm SO glad I found an alternative to mediocre LIVE Sushi (bleh). Also love the enclosed patio and the full bar! Not typical in Japanese joints, but here you can see there's also an appreciation for a good craft cocktail, and trained bartenders who host cool things like whiskey tastings there. They had an extensive cocktail menu that looked interesting (and apparently they have a large variety of Japanese scotch) but I was still getting over a cold, so stuck to green tea. Shared: a giant roll that was a little strong on the mayo that was shaped into a heart. Pretty good, but I think by having so many ingredients it took away from the overall goodness of the roll. I had the soup with udon noodles that came with Kara age. I love kara-age, but I think they used chicken breast instead of thigh, ah well. The soup was bold and flavorful. My fiancee got the vegetarian rolls, but she didn't seem to enjoy them as much as I enjoyed my meal. Didn't get dessert.
