Excited about going to the Moss Distillery with friends visiting from New Mexico. Although my husband and I had not yet dined there we knew the sunset on the deck is a must see. We snuggled up with blankets near the fire place and enjoyed two bottles of wine. We decided to have dinner at the restaurant and afterward no one spoke of the dining experience, not until the next day. I guess that should have been a tell tale sign that our sentiments were all similar - and that they were. For the price of the selected entrees we were all disappointed and jointly decided that the deck is a place to return to but to find another place to dine. Also, an interesting note, there is a story of the Blue Lady, a ghost, but there is two contradictory stories. And our group was observant to this; on the wine bottle label story says she was stabbed to death and the menu states she died in a car crash. We asked the waiter who has worked there for 10 years plus and confronted him with this discrepancy who was unable to explain this discrepancy. read more

We arrived on a Sunday and were seated right away at a window table. Our server, Justin, was attentive and friendly. The views are beautiful. The dishes are generous. The menu was extensive. What a great place!! Hidden away on the ocean. The outdoor area is the best! The firepits with blankets and the view cant be beat. Drinks are strong and reasonably priced. Jove flew us in to half moon bay for lunch the day after Mavericks. You can kind of walk from the airport, if you don't mind a little mud and super high ridiculous fence jumping (ripped my pants). Ordered our food - salad and fish and chips, along with couple pints. We lucked out and scored a seat at one of the fire pits on the deck overlooking the ocean. You have to eat on your lap, but it was not too hard. There is a very communal vibe out there, everyone just enjoying the day. Food is good, service is friendly. Loses a star for high prices, but what do expect with a view like that? They provide cozy blankets for those of us outside, but I wish I knew how often they were washed - or maybe I don't wanna know. We also went for dinner inside a few years back, and the meal was amazing. That night we took the bike up, and we were frozen solid, so they let us spend a few leisurely hours eating and drinking and thawing out. We never felt rushed. read more

Terrible terrible service! It was our special anniversary and we made reservations, called and informed them it was our anniversary and went with high expectations....what a waste! Upon reaching, we stood by the counter and no one greeted us. IHOP has better service! The hostess when she came was brusque and rude. She was actually irritated to see us!! An asian lady with a perpetual frown. The food came in late,the surroundings were dilapidated, and of course the did not even wish us a happy anniversary. When we called they told us dessert would be on the house and they would give us a free picture...terrible terrible dissappointment. On a hot summer-like day driving along the coast in Half Moon Bay, my b/f and I decided we were hungry. We looked around and found this little plae that used to be a house but is now a historical landmark that is a restaurant. And while it was quite hot and the food was okay, you would wonder, "why give it 3 stars?" The answer is that this place had a large sign indicating that it was dog friendly. We were escorted to the back patio (where at night they make mini fires and have blankets available). They had a mini order and pick-up area to get food. We ordered the crab quesadillas and the seafood sliders. The quesadillas were good with bits of crab and avacado in them. The crab cake slider was really good but the ahi tuna slider was filled with ginger (not my favorite) and the salmon slider was dry (it needed a sauce). But we sat there an had a cold beer and wathed the waves so it was nice. Would I go agin? Proably not. The price was way too much for what we got. But the atmosphere for the day was nice. read more

Most of the time, I will grab a glass of wine, pull a blanket (provided) over me, find a seat on a comfy wooden bench out back, and watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. I've been here once before but that was years back so since my boyfriend and I was in the area we decided to grab lunch here. Let me start off with the place itself, it's a small place but very homey and the view is just amazing. Make sure you get the window seats! Anyways, our server was well, okay. Didn't feel that sincereness in her, never asked for refills nor if everything was okay. The bus boy was ten times attentive and kind than our server. But since we both have been in the food industry, we decided to still give her $21 tip on a $84 bill. I didn't really like the oyster but nonetheless it wasn't as bad as other places. The pasta that I ordered, forgot the name but it was the first one under pasta was ok, I like it however it was too plain for my taste. My boyfriend got the seafood sampler and it was pretty good, love their crunchy fries. My honey and I decided to take a drive up the coast in the drop top and enjoy the great weather. I had heard about this place long ago and decided to make it a pit stop on our drive. We had a few beers on the clifftop patio. While the view is beautiful, the rest of the ambiance is lack luster. First of all, the beers were pricey, $6.75 for 16oz beers in plastic cups and it was self serve meaning we had to go up to the restaurant bar to get our drinks. Plastic chairs were strewn about everywhere and the place was more of a doggie paradise than a place to relax, have drinks and enjoy the view. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against dogs, but there were probably more dogs than people here. It just was not as I had pictured it. I was thinking cozy hilltop lounging patio with fire-pits blazing, comfy seating, romantic scene. Instead, I got run down scene and expensive beer. I have dined here and sat on the famous patio eating appetizers and sipping wine dozens of times. This is one of the best secret Bay Area getaways. The patio offers one of the most breathtaking sunset views available, and if the natural beauty wasn't enough, the Distillery offers open-pit gas fires, rocking loveseats, and complementary Mexican blankets to keep you and your guest warm and cozy. On a hot day you can enjoy margaritas and on a cold day enjoy a fire, blanket and a mocha or hot chocolate. Dining with them is a treat too. You can retire to the dining area after sunset and enjoy a waterfront window meal as the glow of the sun dissolves into twilight. Even the oceanfront drive there is beautiful, up 1 or down 1 is it's a treat. Special thanks to the manager John Butler. Went as a party of five on a Sunday evening for my son's twelfth bday. We had a good bit of fried food as that was the choice of my kids. It was decent. The fried artichoke hearts and salmon carpaccio appetizers were my favorite. The seafood sampler platter and the prawn fettuccine Alfredo were okay. The waiter surprised my son with a bday chocolate cake slice and we shared an extra brownie with ice cream to go with it. Those were both very good, but he was a bit forgetful about requests for water before that. The ambiance and location were of course tough to beat, even on a foggy, misty July evening. read more

If your on highway 1 and want to check out a really cool spot with an awesome view of the ocean, come to this place! We came on a Sunday afternoon and the downstairs patio was packed. Lots of outside seating, with fire pits. They have blankets for you to use as well if it's chilly out. I love a dog friendly place, and this place is extremely dog friendly,They even have dog beds for your fur babies :) The food is average, we got clam chowder and chicken nachos. The chowder was bomb, but the nachos weren't anything great. For drinks and an amazing view, give this place a try! read more

Heading north to Pacifica where we were staying, we were intrigued by the sign and backtracked the 7 miles for dinner. Initially underwhelmed by the menu we settled on the short ribs and coastal sliders. Both were prepared to perfection. The whole staff was attentive and friendly. And the view from our window table was breathtaking. They gave us a wonderful evening. Oh, and you can't beat the happy hour prices. Don't pass this place without stopping. read more

Last night I attended a family birthday party at Moss Beach Distillery, my first time there. The food was good, service was even better and the atmosphere made this an overall great dining experience. The staff went above and beyond in making sure that everybody was well taken care of, they paid attention to the needs of the guests, and were very pleasant and accommodating. I had the filet which was topped with a pomegranate wine sauce. My daughters also had the same dish and thought the sauce was too sweet, and yes it was a tad sweet but the steak itself was tender and cooked perfectly. Veggies on the side were nice and al dente which is how I love my veggies, and the mashed potatoes, although too smooth for my taste, had a good flavor. We were fortunate to get a table right at the window overlooking the ocean which made the whole evening that much more pleasant. I would definitely like to go back & order off the regular menu, as the menu for this particular party was limited to 4 choices. Finding a restaurant with such attentive staff seems to get harder and harder so I really appreciated the good service. read more

I really like this place. I'd say it's one of the best in the area to curl up on their back patio by the fire and watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. They allow dogs on the patio, and there are always a lot of people and their pets just chilling and having drinks and finger food - beautiful view of the Pacific, lots of sea birds, several hearths, plenty of seating, and warm blankets provided for cool evenings. We had dinner there this evening inside the restaurant and enjoyed our time. I had the butternut squash lasagna (very good) with asparagus and garlic bread, and my husband had the fish tacos (also good but a little spicy for him). The service was excellent; all the employees were very pleasant. The place itself is pretty simple - not a lot of attention to decor, fairly sparse really, but nice and relaxed, no pretension. My main complaint about the place is that it seems very overpriced. While the food was good, it was $24 for my lasagna and $16 for the fish tacos, and those were some of the cheapest entree items on the menu. They had a clam linguini for $35, other pastas for a similar price, and some fish dishes and other items also in the $35 range. You could get similar quality food in a nice place for quite a bit less, and to pay over $30 for any pasta dish seems unconscionable to me. However, I guess you are paying for the view? I will probably stick to wine on the back patio and finger food from now on. It was good, but I just don't like to pay that much at a mid-scale restaurant, especially not for pasta. So come for the view and for the patio - just be careful what you order. read more

We decided to try Moss Beach Distillery instead of stopping at Sam's Chowder House. Big mistake. Ordered oysters, they did not taste fresh. Clam Chowder was a bland with not many clams. Sea Bass extremely overcooked. I had to send it back. Wines by glass selections are very low end offerings at high end prices. On the positive side of our visit was the server. She was very friendly and professional. The venue is nice, overlooking ocean but there's no beach access. Deck is small with two fire pits that are not large enough to accommodate many people. read more

Celebrated birthday with family for lunch. Beautiful views. Everyone loved their delicious food and very generous portions. Could easily share a meal. Great clam chowder. Hubby loved his fish and chips which had 3 HUGE pieces of fish! Mom loved her prawn Louie salad! Loved my beet and mandarin orange salad. Dad loved his giant platter of fried fish, prawns and 2 kinds of calamari. Couldn't finish it all. Yummy drinks and dessert! Our server was awesome! She even took a family photo and gave it to us in a little cardboard frame with a cute message from the restaurant on it. Look forward to going back! read more

In regards to the long, repetitive, and scathing review given by Mel the manager (who by the way was not in attendance during the time of the alleged incident between Scott the manager and Michael - review below) I have to say management is consistent in their lack of caring about customers and service. Seems as if all the managers have way more time on their hands to either write reviews or hang out with the hostesses instead of making sure the restaurant is run properly. I was there and witnessed the dialogue between Michael and Scott. You are incorrect that Michael was kicked out of the restaurant. He was actually leaving and decided on the way out to share some thoughts, with emphasis on dirty unbussed tables, poor service, and unhealthy conditions in the bathroom. Employees were standing around chatting, while dirty tables were left piled with dirty dishes. As a former restaurant manager myself, I was appalled at the lack of service, cleanliness and empathy, as demonstrated by Scott and his staff. He couldn't look any more bored or be more unapologetic. Michael wasn't ranting or raving or screaming (convenient excuse) but was frustrated by Scott's nonchalant attitude. Upon leaving, I mentioned that the women's bathroom garbage container, which is at least 3 feet high, was overflowing and there wasn't any toilet paper in the stalls. Scott just looked at me with a blank stare. If I were the owner, I would pay more attention to who I hired to make sure my restaurant was successful, clean, and properly managed. After departing I had an excellent dinner at Meza Luna. The food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, and friendly employees were beyond expectations. I will absolutely return to Meza Luna many more times. read more

I have been to MBD many times over the years, but have lost all respect for the owner - and the restaurant - after watching the Ghost Hunters episode recently. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for trying to manufacture a haunting. There is a rebuttal to the findings on the show posted on their website which is pathetic. They claim that the Ghost Hunter's team was informed of the staged shenanigans but the Executive Chef - on camera - clearly acknowledged that they hadn't. Very sad/ Lose the ghost angle and try to make some decent food to take advantage of the great setting. Maybe some of us long time patrons will return. read more

I recently visited this place duirng my engagement weekend and THANK GOD I didnt use this place to ask my gf to marry me. the beer battered artichokes were great, However, my fiance ordered the NEw York Steak and it was soooo dry I WOULDNT HAVE GIVEN THIS FOOD TO MY DOG!!! I tried a piece of it and I had to forced it down with half a beer. the PRICING IS RIDICULOUS!!! FOR 2 PEOPLE, 2main courses, and one appetizer plus a drink (my fiance had water) it cost me $120 BUCKS!!! The location is nice b/c it overlooks the ocean and the firepits to cuddle to are nice after dinner but the rest of my experience was horrible!!!! We were just there this past weekend, & we had a FABULOUS experience! The food was DELICIOUS! I had a salmon club sandwich w/apple bacon! SO good! My husband had calamari, & my son had fish & chips. Again--delicious! The clam chowder--the BEST I've ever had! Bonus--bathroom was really clean. Cute, actually (the tile). DOUBLE bonus--our waitress, Susan was so wonderful with our son, who is a special needs young man, on the autistic spectrum. Really sweet with him. At the end of the meal, we mentioned that it was our daughter's birthday, as well as my husband's & my 30th wedding anniversary. We declined their dessert (had cake waiting at home). Disgusting. Walked in the minute they opened their doors to a full of herself hostess wanting to know if we had a "reservation" for their empty restaurant. When we were shown to a dining room we had to ask to go outside because of the foul odor coming from the rotting carpet and apparently several cats with no litter box. So....I'm telling my BF and daughter about this restaurant - how it's haunted. The first visit, I sat at the bar and had appetizers and drinks. I was telling my daughter the light above us kept moving while I was there the first visit. I thought it was a hoax. Well....the second visit something strange happend again. As we sat at the table (dining area), the waiter walked up to take our order, the pepper shaker falls over! Strange. The waiter saw this happend, and his reaction was "weird stuff happens around here." We were just talking about 'The Lady in the Blue Dress' who haunts the restaurant and the shaker falls over....Crazy! Anyway, I'm giving this place a four star because the food was over priced, but it was decent food. The appetizers are the best, and service was great. The Lady in the Blue Dress story was fun. I ordered the Pasta Primavera tonight and it was the worst resemblance of what that dish should be that I've ever experienced. Absolutely no flavor at all. Everything about the dish was over cooked. It tasted like everything was cooked together at the same time. The artichoke hearts were over cooked. The whole, cherry tomatoes were cooked and squishy, rather than fresh and crunchy. The entire dish was just horrible. Everything had the same bland taste. I could have done much better myself and I don't consider myself a good cook. read more

Great location/view but, the few times we've eaten there, or tried to, over the years, the service inside has been poor, in past years, to nonexistent, more recently. With so many other nice restaurants on the coast that have good food at reasonable prices and actualy provide service, we won't be going back to the Distillery. read more

3.5 stars. pretty big place with nice views in part. the scene-stealer here is the patio out back around the fire pit, overlooking the ocean, with wooden benches and thick blankets. it feels like you're out on a friend's back porch. great to cozy up out there with a nightcap after dinner. and... DOG FRIENDLY!! the food was mediocre and grossly over priced. i mean, i'm coming from SF so i'm used to paying top dollar but $40 for salmon? WTF. dinner for four w 2 apps and 2 desserts was over $400. christ. our server was a very strange little man. total tourist trap me thinks. read more
