Ahh Mother's. I love you like my own mother. Main reason for my love affair with this place is their hours. I know this sounds silly but I don't know any other nice, romantic setting, white tablecloth restaurants that are open this late. I can't tell you how many times me and my boyfriend have been pregaming to go out in downtown Buffalo for drinks and then changed our minds and went to Mother's for a true 5star meal instead. Every once in awhile our food will be blah but that's usually when we order appetizers. They always have the Brie artichoke dip and some days it's phenomenal and others, not so much. The stuffed peppers didn't really live up to expectations but these are besides the point. Mother's Restaurant has some AWESOME entrees. My s/o always gets whatever form of steak is on their specials menu and devours it. He licks that plate clean every time. I usually get their penne pasta because it is probably my favorite pasta dish on this planet. I call it "princess pasta". When you try it, you'll see why. Yesterday, I switched it up and ordered the pan seared duck with pistachio wild rice. Oh. My. God. Sooooo delicious. It better make frequent appearances on that specials menu. Can I just mention that I was eating this exquisite duck at 1 am? That is so awesome. As previously stated, mother's definitely has that romantic feel. Hardly any lights besides candles, and only a handful of tables inside. Since this place is so small, at night when the bar gets a larger crowd it gets a little annoying. But that is okay because their outside seating is adorable. Their kitchen is open till 2 or 3am. Once we were seated, it took a good 10 minutes to actually be acknowledged by our server. Food took over an hour to come out. I ordered one of the specials and when it was finally served, it was cold - not lukewarm, not cool, COLD! After about 10 minutes our server finally came to check on us, and apologized. She took my meal back to the kitchen to heat up. By the time my hot meal finally came back out of the kitchen (simply microwaved), my husband was done with his meal. I enjoy a slower pace between courses, which is why I made our reservation for 2.5 hours before the show we were going to. Everything was so slow that we ended up having to flag our server over to get our bill, because we were running so close to showtime. Seated at a table next to the kitchen door across from the busy coffee stand. No overhead light, 2 tea lights on the table but I needed my phone to read the menu. Pumping enough air to keep the bar cool caused our corner to be freezing. Waiter warmed it up but the cold air was blowing again in no time. Yay! Dinner in the cold and dark. Forgot the vegetable included with hubby's dinner and insisted on a $3 up charge for asparagus instead of potatoes. Waiter made a scene and offered us 3 bucks from his wallet because a new bill would be "so much trouble ". Food was a 5 but the experience was awful! I am a huge fan of this place! They have a short, unique menu that never fails to satisfy. I've tried about half of their menu items and all were excellent. Some dishes are not things I would typically think to try, but I trust the chefs here. One dish with interesting ingredients that I never imagined combined together is the penne: it consists of chicken, a gorganzola cream sauce, walnuts and beets. I never had beets before ordering this dish and i liked them in this dish, which was overall amazing. Other favorites of mine are the filet mingon or the black fettucine with scallops. They cook the large scallops to perfection so they practically melt in your mouth and have a perfect texture. As far as I know, this is the best quality late night restaurant. They are open as late as 3am some days. Their interior is rustic chic with a brick wall and comfortable tables and chairs, it is candle lit, cozy and romantic. The outdoor seating on the back patio is lovely and peaceful as well. They have nice lighting out there. During my most recent visit here on New Year's Eve, I ordered pino noir but it was abnormally cold when I took a sip of it. I mentioned this to the waiter and he said it was because they keep some of their bottles upstairs and it's cold up there. He brought me another glass on the house and let me keep the cold one. Mother's was a unique experience. It was a late Saturday night in Buffalo and not many places still had the kitchen open. We called around and were stoked when we were told Mother's kitchen was open til 3. We arrived a little after 2. The atmosphere is something you'd probably find randomly in Midtown Manhattan. The place's vibe was split in half: the left was a quiet, couple dozen white clothed tables with candlelight, the right was a rowdy, music playing, loud talking bar. We were seated pretty fast. There were maybe 3-4 other parties. We had already drank earlier and were trying to sober up at this point so we only ordered water for drinks. I felt like that irritated the waitress, mais c'est la vie. For food we ordered the southwestern shrimp fritters ($10.50), warm brie and artichoke dip ($8.75), and side of fries (around $4/5). The shrimp fritters were delicious. My boyfriend thought a bit too much breading, but I really digged 'em. Four big fritters packed with shrimp. Comes with an incredible chipotle aioli. The dip was delicious. Not nearly enough. Wish they served it with vegetables not just the cracker-sized croutons. The fries are definitely house made. Very good. Don't even need dipping sauces. While the food was satisfying, the ambience was a bit unpleasant. We could barely hear each other due to the bar noise, the sole light source is the candle, so people with low vision might struggle without a small flashlight. For a late night option, I'd say it's not a bad choice if you're already on Allen. But I wouldn't recommend making a special drive just to get a late night bite. read more

Had dinner last night with my parents and we had a wonderful experience. Our server, heather, was so delightful! We all ate something from the specials menu, I had the Lamb with red wine reduction, green beans and roasted red potatoes with goat cheese lamb was Cooked perfectly. My father had the salmon with a chili-soy sauce and my mother had he halibut, they were both very pleased with their meal. Mother's food was really good. Was it worth $30 per meal plus drinks? No. Our food took over an hour and 15 minutes to come out. Seriously, we started timing it. The server, Amanda P. was less than welcoming. In fact she ruined our celebration. The tables around us arrived 10-15 minutes after is and were finished before we took a bite. Zero apologies for the very late food. She was super unkind and didn't check back at all,. There was not a manager in sight to talk to about the issue. Went there last night was treated very rudely. Started out nice when I called at 6pm to make a reservation for 8pm for two people. Was told the first table available was 8:30, but they'd try and us early. I was ok with that. We got there just past 8. Was told a table wasn't available and ours would be at 8:30. By 8:45 I asked if our table might be ready soon. I was given a sharp answer of, "no, your tables not ready yet"! I kept looking at the gentleman seating people to see if we were even getting close. I am leaving two reviews in one. We made reservations at Mothers for a 6:00 PM seating. (4) of us. To give context, it was a reservation with a family member we haven't seen in about a decade and they recently got engaged - so it was a big deal. A very special occasion. Our waiter was wonderful. We joked with him that we would be there for awhile and he more than willingly joked with us. We ordered drinks at the bar prior to sitting down. We ordered (2) bottles of wine. We ordered (2) appetizers. We ordered (4) steak dinners. We ordered (2) desserts and coffee. We paid close to $350 with tip. The food was great, the service was great. You know who wasn't great - the woman working as maitre d seating everyone. As our table was still eating dessert and finishing coffee - she came to our table and awkwardly asked us to move to the bar to give room for more people to sit down and eat. She offered to buy us a cocktail at the bar, on her. She said we had been there a long time and that she had people that needed to sit - that we needed to understand that a restaurant with 13 tables needs people to move. That we had a time limit we should have thought about. I took a peek at the front door/bar - and there were maybe 10 people there. Most were comfortably sitting at the empty bar. Behind our table there was a table of (4) empty. She was not only rude & awkward but she made a terrific dinner completely uncomfortable. At this point we had been seated for a little over two hours. I realize a long time for a small restaurant, which is why we kept ordering... kept drinking... we made up for the long dinner. We told her no. That we would feel more comfortable staying and finishing our dessert. But she ruined the rest of our stay. The waiter was mortified and told us to stay and enjoy. He even said he was stunned at how rude it all was and apologized. The woman returned again to apologize but just made it more awkward. I mean, please, keep coming over and interrupting our $400 dinner with your guilt. She assured us she took care of the rest of the patrons ---- FYI I don't care. P.S. The three of them they sat at the empty table behind us. We won't be returning just because of her. We spent a small fortune on dinner on a very special night only for it to be ruined by someone that can't plan for the unexpected. She made an assumption that we were loitering instead of spending $400. Don't assume. And one more... we were the table next to the bar. Next to the spot where one of your waiters dropped an entirely full red wine glass and shattered it. My pants and my purse had wine specks all over them when i left. Went to mothers last night for mine and my husbands 1 year wedding anniversary . I was so excited to go and spend an evening with good food! Well I got the opposite experience. The vibe was more so like a dive bar. A lot of people In there we're very drunk ( from the bills game) which yes I expect that it's buffalo but I didn't realize we would be surrounded by intoxicated people from the game. I thought this was more of a nicer restaurant so we got all dressed up.. and more than half the people in there were in sweatpants .. the food was meh. Overall we should've went to mister sizzles . Had a date night with the lady here and it was perfect! Our waiter was amazing, knew what wine to pair with our meals and such. We began with the calamari that was exquisite! After that for my Maine course I ordered the sin of all meats, the Veal Porter Chop with mashed potatoes and asparagus, probably one one the best meals I've ever had! We went to Mother's on St. Patrick's weekend, on a Saturday. We attempted to make a 7:00pm reservation, but the closest available openings were either 7:30pm or 8:00pm (therefore, we took the 7:30pm slot). We arrived 15 minutes early, so we ordered our drinks at the bar while waiting on our table to be ready. There seemed to be some drunken commotion outside, but the commotion stayed outside. When you walk into Mother's, you'll walk into the bar section. The restaurant area is sectioned off with columns and a rope. The two areas are otherwise pretty open and right next to each other, so expect it to be pretty loud and lively. The lighting overall is a little bit on the dimmer side, with candles on the tables which can be a good place to bring your dates. We ordered oysters and steamed mussels as appetizers. The steamed mussels were cooked in red curry and coconut milk broth, which was very good. However, the size of the mussels' were really tiny though. The oysters were of good size, and we received a dozen oysters in our order. We also ordered the NY Strip Steak and Duck special. The strip steak was about 12 oz. and cooked to perfection. The steak dish would normally come with a side of mash potatoes, but I substituted my mash potatoes for asparagus (without any issues). The Duck was very tender, and the sauce added a sweet flavoring to the dish. Overall, the food was good but a little on the pricey side (especially if you factor in drinks), but I would recommend coming here. read more

Prior to writing this review, I used to be a regular at mother's bringing in parties of four or more for person and business purposes. As a Buffalo native, I, like many others, take pride in supporting our local businesses... A few nights ago I called Mother's make an inquiry regarding their latest menu and schedule a reservation for the end of the coming week. I was greeted by Bruce who before I was able to explain my reason for calling rudely stated they were not taking reservations and hung up the phone. My husband a (and others at our neighborhood get together) overheard the exchange and decided to calmly call back to acknowledge. His intention was to politely acknowledge that Bruce must have been busy and continue my inquiry. However , Bruce then started using foul language directed at me, while my husband was totally dumbfounded. This was a terrible and embarrassing experience. Mothers used to be a staple for us and a place we supported throughout the pandemic, but no longer. We will take our business elsewhere to restaurants that appreciate their customers. read more

I keep going back to Mother's for 3 different reasons; 1. The Kitchen, the kitchen always sends out its food done right and never a half-ass job just to get the orders out. They are always consistant and I know what to expect if I have had that meal before. They are not slow, but they do not rush the table. The food comes out at a perfect pace. Plus, the food is always plated well and is attractive to the eye. As some would say "Mother's sends out great food porn to the table." The kitchen is also coming up with some creative specials for the nights and keeps it changing. 2. The Bar, the bar is open late, large, enough space to eat and not bump the person next to you, and the bartending staff have been there for a while. They know what they are doing, know their customers,and know how to treat everyone, not just the group of hotties at the bar. If you are looking for delious food late at night come to Mother's! 3.The Serving Staff, this is another consistant at Mother's. The Servers always seem on top of thier tables for the night and can really take the resturant experience to the next level. Meh describes my experience at Mother's. It's fine if people are going but as a vegan, I wouldn't seek it out. Others loved their food. The patio is great - enclosed and on the side. I asked our server for a cocktail recommendation, which is my custom, and was disappointed in the uninspired recomendations. I went with the Pom martini and didn't really like it at all. There was nothing vegan on the menu so I asked the server if the chef could prepare something and was reassured when he said, "Not a problem, we do that all the time." I ended up with stuffed portobello mushrooms and I liked it but it was nothing special. I will note I was charged a very fair price for the dish, I think it was $12. Everyone else loved their food. One order got messed up but the person said they would take the mistake dish rather than wait and was very pleased with the dish. After we finished, the hostess came by and said they would need the table in ten minutes, which I didn't actually mind but we has JUST gotten the check from our server after waiting QUITE a long time for it, which one of my friends pointed out. read more

After a show at Shea's and dinner nearby we went in search of dessert at Mother's. And not just any dessert; we wanted to experience the delicious craft of ::whisper:: Donna Majewski. On good information we ordered the Cappuccino Mousse Cake and Banana Cream Pie and shared both. We often talk about "flaky" crust like every pie should have it and that we all know what that means. But much like your favorite steak or chop - it's all about personal preference. For me, and my personal preference, the crust of this Banana Cream Pie tasted of butter and vanilla and the banana reduction was delicious in its own right. Add fresh whipped creme and great presentation and it's the perfect dessert. The Cappuccino Mousse cake - five layers of delicious mousse and chocolate cake beneath a fantastic chocolate ganache - was delicate yet firm and lightly sweet. I can still taste how deliciously tempting it was. Our server was attentive and completely "on-the-spot" with fresh hot coffee as we needed it. This restaurant has a good selection of wine and a well stocked bar for cocktails. It does not have a good craft beer selection, so know that going in. I started with the lentil, chorizo, and tomato soup. It starts off slow, but the heat builds into a nice soup. For the entree, I ordered the pan seared scallops with black fettuccine. I have to say that I have NEVER had scallops cooked this perfectly. They were not rubbery at all, they were like soft, briny pillows. The fettuccine was al dente and the sauce was creamy. I would have ordered dessert, but by the time the server got around to it, the entree caught up to me and I did not have room for it. My goal was to find a restaurant that was not overly fancy, all the while not feeling out of place being a little dressed up. After hours of research (no shame, I like my food) and looking at menus, I decided to settle on Mother's. The gentleman, I believe his name was Bruce, who assisted me with my reservation over the phone was so kind and helpful. Upon arrival, it was fairly busy for a Thursday evening, however we were seated quickly, with bread and butter at our table in no time. The ambiance of the restaurant was very homey, with customers of all ages. We loved the handwritten specials menu; it fit the vibe perfectly! We both ordered an alcoholic beverage, along with the scallops and black fettuccine. I was a little weary, finding out the pasta was dyed with squid ink; our waiter talked me into giving it a shot. This dish was probably one of the best pasta seafood dishes we have had in a very long time (and we come from a seafood haven, being Boston-natives). The flavors and textures of the dish were paired wonderfully, and the scallops were cooked to absolute perfection. My boyfriend ended up having a lovely night, and we cannot wait to go back. It's the place you can go for fancy date night and also the place you can go to get a good meal super late when everything else is closed. It has a great bar if you want to watch the game or just hang out. It's always crowded but somehow still super intimate. The patio outside is really nice during the summer. Order the salmon-it is incredible and the spaghetti squash appetizer is my favorite. Service has always been wonderful and you won't be disappointed if you decide to give this place a try. read more

I can't really explain it, but this is one of my favorite restaurants ever. I live in NYC and have been twice. Can't wait to go back.

My favorite bar in the city- definitely a hidden gem and, in my opinion, the best patio in the city. Huge selection of liquor. Huge. None of those fancy craft liquors where they need to light a orange peel on fire to serve it- traditional cocktails only, which means it doesn't take 10 minutes to make a drink. Best wings in the city, by far- but that's not what they're known for and you probably won't be given the bar menu unless you ask for it. They have a large daily special menu in addition to their regular menu. Find anything from lobster to burgers to (my favorite) scallops with black linguine, to stuffed peppers. There really is something for everyone. This bar/restaurant is a must. It's very social, everyone is friendly (staff/patrons), and the food is delicious. read more

Banana peppers had potential but the batch we got was so hot it was nearly inedible but would have been really good if it weren't for the heat and our server hooked us up with a dessert on the house since we couldn't eat the peppers. Menu was interesting and there were lots of items I'd love to come back and try. Pretty unbelievable that they're open til 3am and serve their full menu. Patio was very nice and romantic. Food was just like everyone else said - wonderfully delicious and flavorful! Mother's has their standard menu and also has a specials menu that never disappoints. On this evening, their rack of lamb selling for $33 was sold out! I ordered the very popular scallop with black fettuccine in a creamy sauce. My boyfriend and the birthday boy both ordered the ribeye steak which came with potato wedges, asparagus and onion rings. We ordered the artichoke brie dip as as an appetizer. While the food was absolutely amazing, I must say our waiter was lackluster. He rarely came by to check on us. He brought two appetizer plates for the group and since he never came back to check on us, I was unable to ask for another plate. He refilled our water once but only when we were practically done with the meal. When he checked in with our group on our meal, he asked my boyfriend and the birthday boy how their steaks work and completely ignored me. I am definitely not the sensitive type but I was a tad offended when I felt ignored the entire evening. It is unfortunate that the service we received that night kind of ruined my delicious meal. Don't let the tough, gritty exterior of this bistro fool you, and disregard the fact that Mother's is tucked away on a one-way side street more fitting described as an alleyway. Mother's is one fantastic spot to grab grub in Allentown. Inside you get the feeling your sitting in a 17th century wine cellar with all the stone and candle lit corners, but one with happy patrons, good food and a cool bar. It's unfortunate that there isn't a website for this place with a menu. I understand the menu changes often, and perhaps that's why. However, it's tough to head to when you're married to a woman that refuses to set foot inside a place before knowing there's somthing on the menu she likes to eat.
